My Long List of Amplifiers and My Personal Review of Each!

So I have been in a long journey looking to find the best amplifiers for my martin logan montis. As you know, the match between an amplifier and speakers has to be a good "marriage" and needs to be blend exquisitely. Right now, I think I might have found the best sounding amplifier for martin logan. I have gone through approximately 34-36 amplifiers in the past 12 months. Some of these are:

Bryston ST, SST, SST2 series
NAD M25
PARASOUND HALO
PARASOUND CLASSIC
KRELL TAS
KRELL KAV 500
KRELL CHORUS
ROTEL RMB 1095
CLASSE CT 5300
CLASSE CA 2200
CLASSE CA 5200
MCINTOSH MC 205
CARY AUDIO CINEMA 7
OUTLAW AUDIO 755
LEXICON RX7
PASS LABS XA 30.8
BUTLER AUDIO 5150
ATI SIGNATURE SERIES 6005

With all that said, the amplifiers I mentioned above are the ones that in my opinion are worth mentioning. To make a long story short, there is NO 5 CHANNEL POWER AMP that sounds as good as a 3ch and 2ch amplifier combination. i have done both experiments and the truth is that YOU DO lose details and more channel separation, etc when you select a 5 channel power amplifier of any manufacturer.
My recollection of what each amp sounded like is as follows:

ATI SIGNATURE SERIES 6005 (great power and amazing soundstage. Very low noise floor, BUT this amplifiers NEEDS TO BE cranked up in order to fully enjoy it. If you like listening at low volume levels or somewhat moderate, you are wasting your time here. This amp won’t sound any different than many other brands out there at this volume. The bass is great, good highs although they are a bit bright for my taste)

NAD M25 (very smooth, powerful, but somewhat thin sounding as far as bass goes)
Bryston sst2(detailed, good soundstage, good power, but can be a little forward with certain speakers which could make them ear fatiguing at loud volumes)

Krell (fast sounding, nice bass attack, nice highs, but some detail does get lost with certain speakers)

rotel (good amp for the money, but too bright in my opinion)

cary audio (good sound overall, very musical, but it didn’t have enough oomph)

parasound halo (good detail, great bass, but it still holds back some background detail that i can hear in others)

lexicon (very laid back and smooth. huge power, but if you like more detail or crisper highs, this amp will disappoint you)

McIntosh mc205 (probably the worst multichannel amp given its price point. it was too thin sounding, had detail but lacked bass.

butler audio (good amplifier. very warm and smooth sweet sounding. i think for the money, this is a better amp than the parasound a51)

pass labs (very VERY musical with excellent bass control. You can listen to this for hours and hours without getting ear fatigue. however, it DOES NOT do well in home theater applications if all you have is a 2 channel set up for movies. The midrange gets somewhat "muddy" or very weak sounding that you find yourself trying to turn it up.

classe audio (best amplifier for multi channel applications. i simply COULDNT FIND a better multi channel amplifier PERIOD. IT has amazing smoothness, amazing power and good bass control although i would say krell has much better bass control)

Update: The reviews above were done in January 2015. Below is my newest update as of October 2016:

PS AUDIO BHK 300 MONOBLOCKS: Amazing amps. Tons of detail and really amazing midrange. the bass is amazing too, but the one thing i will say is that those of you with speakers efficiency of 87db and below you will not have all the "loudness" that you may want from time to time. These amps go into protection mode when using a speaker such as the Salon, but only at very loud levels. Maybe 97db and above. If you don’t listen to extreme crazy levels, these amps will please you in every way.

Plinius Odeon 7 channel amp: This is THE BEST multichannel amp i have ever owned. Far , but FAR SUPERIOR to any other multichannel amp i have owned. In my opinion it destroyed all of the multichannel amps i mentioned above and below. The Odeon is an amp that is in a different tier group and it is in a league of its own. Amazing bass, treble and it made my center channel sound more articulate than ever before. The voices where never scrambled with the action scenes. It just separated everything very nicely.

Theta Dreadnaught D: Good detailed amp. Looks very elegant, has a pleasant sound, but i found it a tad too bright for my taste. I thought it was also somewhat "thin" sounding lacking body to the music. could be that it is because it is class d?

Krell Duo 300: Good amp. Nice and detailed with enough power to handle most speakers out there. I found that it does have a very nice "3d" sound through my electrostatics. Nothing to fault here on this amp.
Mark Levinson 532H: Great 2 channel amp. Lots of detail, amazing midrange which is what Mark Levinson is known for. It sounds very holographic and will please those of you looking for more detail and a better midrange. As far as bass, it is there, but it is not going to give you the slam of a pass labs 350.5 or JC1s for example. It is great for those that appreciate classical music, instrumental, etc, but not those of you who love tons of deep bass.

 It is articulate sounding too
Krell 7200: Plenty of detail and enough power for most people. i found that my rear speakers contained more information after installed this amp. One thing that i hated is that you must use xlr cables with this amp or else you lose most of its sound performance when using RCA’s.

Krell 402e: Great amp. Very powerful and will handle any speaker you wish. Power is incredible and with great detail. That said, i didn’t get all the bass that most reviewers mentioned. I thought it was "ok" in regards to bass. It was there, but it didn’t slam me to my listening chair.

Bryston 4B3: Good amp with a complete sound. I think this amp is more laid back than the SST2 version. I think those of you who found the SST2 version of this amp a little too forward with your speakers will definitely benefit from this amp’s warmth. Bryston has gone towards the "warm" side in my opinion with their new SST3 series. As always, they are built like tanks. I wouldn’t call this amp tube-like, but rather closer to what the classe audio delta 2 series sound like which is on the warm side of things.

Parasound JC1s: Good powerful amps. Amazing low end punch (far superior bass than the 402e). This amp is the amp that i consider complete from top to bottom in regards to sound. Nothing is lacking other than perhaps a nicer chassis. Parasound needs to rework their external appearance when they introduce new amps. This amp would sell much more if it had a revised external appearance because the sound is a great bang for the money. It made my 800 Nautilus scream and slam. Again, amazing low end punch.

Simaudio W7: Good detailed amp. This amp reminds me a lot of the Mark Levinson 532h. Great detail and very articulate. I think this amp will go well with bookshelves that are ported in order to compensate for what it lacks when it comes to the bass. That doesn’t mean it has no bass, but when it is no Parasound JC1 either.
Pass labs 350.5: Wow, where do i begin? maybe my first time around with the xa30.8 wasn’t as special as it was with this monster 350.5. It is just SPECTACULAR sounding with my electrostatics. The bass was THE BEST BASS i have ever heard from ANY amp period. The only amp that comes close would be the jC1s. It made me check my settings to make sure the bass was not boosted and kept making my jaw drop each time i heard it. It totally destroyed the krell 402e in every regard. The krell sounded too "flat" when compared to this amp. This amp had amazing mirange with great detail up top. In my opinion, this amp is the best bang for the money. i loved this amp so much that i ended up buying the amp that follows below.

Pass labs 250.8: What can i say here. This is THE BEST STEREO AMP i have ever heard. This amp destroys all the amps i have listed above today to include the pass labs 350.5. It is a refined 350.5 amp. It has more 3d sound which is something the 350.5 lacked. It has a level of detail that i really have never experienced before and the bass was amazing as well. I really thought it was the most complete power amplifier i have ever heard HANDS DOWN. To me, this is a benchmark of an amplifier. This is the amp that others should be judged by. NOTHING is lacking and right now it is the #1 amplifier that i have ever owned.

My current amps are Mcintosh MC601s: i decided to give these 601s a try and they don’t disappoint. They have great detail, HUGE soundstage, MASSIVE power and great midrange/highs. The bass is great, but it is no pass labs 250.8 or 350.5. As far as looks, these are the best looking amps i have ever owned. No contest there. i gotta be honest with you all, i never bought mcintosh monos before because i wasn’t really "wowed" by the mc452, but it could have been also because at that time i was using a processor as a preamp which i no longer do. Today, i own the Mcintosh C1100 2 chassis tube preamp which sounds unbelievable. All the amps i just described above have been amps that i auditioned with the C1100 as a preamp. The MC601s sound great without a doubt, but i will say that if you are looking for THE BEST sound for the money, these would not be it. However, Mcintosh remains UNMATCHED when it comes to looks and also resale value. Every other amp above depreciates much faster than Mcintosh.

That said, my future purchase (when i can find a steal of a deal) will be the Pass labs 350.8. I am tempted to make a preliminary statement which is that i feel this amp could be THE BEST stereo amp under 30k dollars. Again, i will be able to say more and confirm once i own it. I hope this update can help you all in your buying decisions!

The quote says the Magico M3 were financed by selling the Boulder pre. The quote then says the the Magico will be for sale too.

How come, in this normal world where normal physics apply, can someone SALE a pair of FINANCED Magicos if they never made it in...in the first place ? Lol Only Wall Street speculators can move things like this...

Maple already answered I guess. We are obviously being lied.
Same feeling when you enter a car showroom and the dealer starts the sale speach...
It’s not about whats the best for the money anymore. It’s about the ego, it’s about showing the gear his dealer close relations are going to sell, it’s about ´´  ... you know at this level all is good , it’s just different you know ´´...
Wow I’m away one week, and the Wilsons Alexia 2 are gone !
And Focal are back in. Cool for sure. 😃

WC, remember how many times I told you Wilsons don’t have the resolution of Focals. Now you see the light. It’s mostly in the driver tech. Focal has mastered... Like Magico and Dynaudio, they make their own.

Also, with the Stella you get 2 midrange drivers per speakers. That makes a huge difference in a big room at higher volume. ( clarity with tall imaging). This is why speakers with the d’ Apolito arrangement is so popular among diyers. Most of the time they add a pair of quick subwoofers to those and get huge sound that can rival some well known models.
There seems to be more objective opinions lately. Maybe a lot of subjectivity was from hardcore Wilson defenders who can’t tolerate criticism. Well, Wilsons are  gone and simply outmatched by a much bigger maker which is Focal.

And we also have new ideas, like Tektons and their potential. It is a good thing to see the whole and the relatively , not just the highly moly creamy on top...

WC is just confirming what I have been telling him from the beginning...

Wilson tweeters are simply subpar to Focal Be Tweeters. Also to B&W diamond tweeters.

Any Wilson speakers , may it be their flagship ones, will be subpar on that critical part of the audio spectrum. Speed, thanks for your service.

B&W ´s tweeter is even better. Diamond has lower resonance than Beryllium. So you get less hotness and hifish tizziness .
WC should upgrade the fuses in the miraculous Gryphon Mephisto amplifier. It would make it even more miraculous.
Add to that a change of dac. dcS was successful in the past with it’s ring dac. Today is a new ball game. Someone does not need to put this much on a dac anymore.
Magico, dcS , Wilson, in 2020 they all charge too much for what they offer in the end...
I’ ll take the Boulder preamp over the Gryphon anytime. Why ?

Because Gryphon was always a master amp maker, never a preamp one. So asking the total $$$ for their amps is one thing, but for their preamps...a big no no.

Same thing applies to their line of cables imho.
You just prooved my point, if WC changes speaker again , it should be for Magico.  Wilson again after having tried 3 different pairs, I doubt it and very improbable...
Wilson is not in the same class as Focal and Magico. This is not bashing, but recognizing truth. Focal and Magico design and produce their own drivers. Focal and Magico are also work of art...
2 new components coming in...I knew I had some sub conscious influence on WC but that much. 😄
About the Suncoast video. I really don’t think it’s a good idea for someone to tell his audio seller he has 100k $ or 200k$ to blow right away. Most sellers are on commission, so it’s their pocket interest before yours... Human nature is human nature, they will naturally sell you the products they make the most margin on...

The guy in the video should have ask his customer what makes him think 200k will additionally get him instead of 100k...to begin with...

https://www.whatsbestforum.com/threads/gryphon-colosseum-stopped-working.27149/

Gryphon is known to push it’s audio circuits to the max. May not be the best brand to keep for a long time. This is not and will never be Luxman or McIntosh reliability.

ricevs is right.

This is why I ´m not buying any bi wireable  speakers anymore. The less contacts the better.
According to the op, since the beginning, it’s « the JOURNEY » that drives his choices.

But the reality...It’s really more about the « DEAL OF THE DAY » that drives the op moves.
With that last Focal Stella Evo quick departure, it’s plainly obvious to anyone with common sense.

Not saying that’s bad. Not judging. His hobby. His liberty. Just saying to remember there is « huge part of market opportunities » hovering around the reviews and upgrades...
That ´s car music. And it do sound better in my car. Thanks to iPad.

Carbon fibre speakers. Remember the Performance 6 from Mordaunt Short ?...

Stop writing the words consulting and fees, last time I knew it was forbidden guys.

Well maybe it’s not anymore. Maybe it just depends on WC’s mood of the day.
Seems like he is agreeing to talk about it. What’s the exact fee WC to use your services ?
—— Complaint mode to mod enabled ——
Dave, WC doesn’t like when we write about his new consulting offered services. Somehow he talked to mods into deleting everything that relates to this matter. Why, I don’t have a clue.
As I, Ron and viber said, your last video sounded like radio shack...

Using it as « deluxe » background music in the kitchen right now.
Who knew 150k of Gryphon and Magico could assist so well in making spaghetti sauce.
Please let the Magico M3 settle in before making any precipitated judgment.
They are far from broken in, and are not on their dedicated footers yet.

All the Evo Focal series have the same Be tweeter. The difference is the tuning ( crossover) in the Stella because of the 2 midrange drivers. That is what WC was hearing.
Well, the Alexx are the worst looking pair of speakers to have entered WC ´s room.

The 5 inch upper midrange is the same driver as in the Sabrina... ( made by Scanspeak). You would never see something like this with Focal.
Always said the Alexia had boomy bass. It was always denied. Now the truth comes out again... Someone has to blow 100k with Wilson to get controlled bass ( what a shame), this is why Focal and Magico are in a whole other class.

I wonder when somebody will say thew words that really should go with a speaker like this.
The time domain is really terrable, and the impedance is even worse.
How can this ever be called high end?
To me this looks like someone without any knowledge of speaker design ran into a huge stack of components, drivers, MDF and veneer, and had a lot of fun.
If I did this speakers measured performance, I would start all over again.

The sure to come comment asking "Did you listen to it?" will be answered no, I did not, and I do not see any reason for it.
Good measurements will not promise anything when it comes to listening experiments, but bad measurements will always do so. I´ve never heard any speaker or other component perform well if the measurements were lousy.
And this set of measurements is way in the dessert

Sciencecop and Viber , I agree 100%.
And, not the least, we all know the real reasons behind how long speakers stay in WC’s room is:

A) A buyer is contacting him to buy the pair asap.
B) Deal or trade opportunity that comes through and let him get the next wanted piece...

We know for sure Focal Stella and Scala Evos made it to interested buyers very quickly. The reason is Focal resells much better than Wilson. As I said, it’s in another whole other class.

And, we get to know the flaws of Alexias and DAWs , boomy less controlled bass, after it is gone. This I must ask WC, why did you never reveal this very important flaw before... Why must we always wait until a piece of gear is gone before we learn the cons of it ?...
With all that speaker experience, having owned Focal, Magico, Dynaudio , Vivid....WC wants us to believe he couldn’t recognize less controlled « boomy »bass from the Wilson Daw and Alexia 2.... before getting the Alexx. Wow.

And we are supposed to believe that.
Sorry, but it is obvious you never mentioned this important information purposely. Even an objective begining reviewer would have not omitted this kind of speaker major caractéristic. WC, you are not different from all those magasine reviews in not telling the flaws of the gear you try and eventually resell or trade.

It is pure disappointment we have to wait until the gear is gone to learn the whole thing about a product. Especially when the reviewer is experienced, this has no rational explaination.
Simplicity is still king in audio. Less contacts the better. Sure it’s not always practical, choices have to be made. Some wants to buy complex big expensive speakers that will need big complex expensive amps. Their choices , not mine. In the end, it doesn’t sound better...just bigger...louder... Someone can achieve this otherwise. Someone has to look whats inside, make a little research, be warned sellers are not always fully honest, etc.
Let me predict the future again...

...the Boulders have less bass...

Obviously, any amp has less bass than the Mephisto, because it is what Gryphon does to all their amps..,they bias up the bass. They are geared that way. It impresses the boy in you that crave for that omph feeling...

The my system has more bass than yours type of guy. The my Camaro has more hp than yours type.
The interior build of the Boulder amps are just in a whole other class compared to the Mephisto. A much more refined product, that obviously went a lot further in research and development.
The Gryphon’s gut looks like a chinese overbuilt layout compared to the Boulders...

Gryphon is a Dodge Challenger Hellcat. Boulder is a Ferrari or Porsche...

But but but, Mephisto got huuuuge bass dynamics and shakes the whole room...😂
Dodge vs Ferrari.

Gryphon vs Boulder.

Boulder and Ferrari for the serious buyer who knows it’s stuff...
Not much more speakers you can try that will compete with the Alexx and the Utopias in your room lately.

What you could do, instead if that pleases you, is try smaller and more affordable models, for fun, to see what are the tradoffs and to give your audience opinions on alternatives...insight on what the more affordable stuff gives and gives not compared to the ultra high end. You already did so with Sopra 3, ML ESL 11A, and others...

Examples that come in mind. Spendor D9.2 , Dynaudio Confidence , PMC Fact 12.
I don’t need to hear the Gryphon combo anymore.
I can die happy now.
Someone has to be deaf to ignore that superiority ( Boulder).  That last video was the best sound ever period.
As long as it is not the Gryphon combo playing , I ‘m in youtube heaven listening to the Boulders.
Mephisto has been detroned, and will go in history as the the most expensive « class D sounding » dual mono class A amplifier...
It will only be a real test when you upgrade the stock powercords on the Boulders. As good as the stock pc are, they cannot complete with Audioquest Dragon on the Mephisto.

So in the meantime, stock pc on the Mephisto should absolutely be used for a test with meaning.
It’s not fair for the Boulders , to have them on stock powercords competing with an amp on Audioquest Dragon.

This is like giving a 50 meters advance to a Dodge Viper on startup vs a Ferrari.
This is like cutting off the turbo in the Ferrari and fueling it with lame 87 octane gas....vs high octane 94 in the Dodge.

The test is biased from the start.

30k POWERCORDS !! Vs stock pc .......this is NOT SERIOUS at all.
Sorry WC, I don’t care who idea it was, it is a huge error to compare any amplifier with Audioquest Dragon vs another amp with only stock powercords...

YOU always used stock powercords first on your amps tests. This was your philosophy and you were right, Why is this different this time.

I ll tell you why, because the Mephisto needs 30 k of powercords to have any chance competing with the Boulder. This is why.
The Boulders are immensely more refined, on the guitar at the beginning of the first tune....I can hear more nuance and decay... The Mephisto gets broomed over as its sounds a bit midrange forward with much less ambiance and air.

The Boulders sound more real also.
And that is with normal powercords on the Boulder. Imagine with something like Audioquest Dragons....So, Boulder monos have hidden additional potential.( which is just crazy considering they are magnificent even now )

Those who say the matchup is not fair ( mono vs stereo). Sorry, I correct you , Mephisto is basically two « glued together » mono amps with two powercords feeding two separate power supply. So it’s monos vs monos in reality !
I believe I can see Audioquest pcs behind when the Mephisto is playing. And, that was what agreed with Kren and others, was it WC ?

mr decibel +1

This is the big con of Wilson speakers, they are made to draw too much current. It’s the out of date way of making sota speakers imho. Focal and Tekton knows this,

Boulder is besting Gryphon in both videos. Easy to judge with quality headphones and an experienced listener.
Latest wife’s spaghetti sauce is just too good. Spicy 🌶 perfection. 😋

Could not resist sharing.
Someone should eat the nicest spaghetti sauce among the nicest pastas when feeling offended that much. Not with too much wine though,  it tends to make you write about food a little. 😁
Latest video just made me right again. The Boulder preamplifier crushes the Gryphon Pandora, not even close. It is making it’s magic heard clearly compared to the lower level overrated Gryphon combo.

Still in this same video, the Mephisto is limiting the system. The Boulder amps brings the experience to an even higher level.
WC, you seem to have developed a talent in getting the wrong cables for your electronics. No pun intended.
Focal Sopra 3 and Scala Evos were imho the best bang for the buck speakers that entered WC ´s house.
