My Long List of Amplifiers and My Personal Review of Each!

So I have been in a long journey looking to find the best amplifiers for my martin logan montis. As you know, the match between an amplifier and speakers has to be a good "marriage" and needs to be blend exquisitely. Right now, I think I might have found the best sounding amplifier for martin logan. I have gone through approximately 34-36 amplifiers in the past 12 months. Some of these are:

Bryston ST, SST, SST2 series
NAD M25
PARASOUND HALO
PARASOUND CLASSIC
KRELL TAS
KRELL KAV 500
KRELL CHORUS
ROTEL RMB 1095
CLASSE CT 5300
CLASSE CA 2200
CLASSE CA 5200
MCINTOSH MC 205
CARY AUDIO CINEMA 7
OUTLAW AUDIO 755
LEXICON RX7
PASS LABS XA 30.8
BUTLER AUDIO 5150
ATI SIGNATURE SERIES 6005

With all that said, the amplifiers I mentioned above are the ones that in my opinion are worth mentioning. To make a long story short, there is NO 5 CHANNEL POWER AMP that sounds as good as a 3ch and 2ch amplifier combination. i have done both experiments and the truth is that YOU DO lose details and more channel separation, etc when you select a 5 channel power amplifier of any manufacturer.
My recollection of what each amp sounded like is as follows:

ATI SIGNATURE SERIES 6005 (great power and amazing soundstage. Very low noise floor, BUT this amplifiers NEEDS TO BE cranked up in order to fully enjoy it. If you like listening at low volume levels or somewhat moderate, you are wasting your time here. This amp won’t sound any different than many other brands out there at this volume. The bass is great, good highs although they are a bit bright for my taste)

NAD M25 (very smooth, powerful, but somewhat thin sounding as far as bass goes)
Bryston sst2(detailed, good soundstage, good power, but can be a little forward with certain speakers which could make them ear fatiguing at loud volumes)

Krell (fast sounding, nice bass attack, nice highs, but some detail does get lost with certain speakers)

rotel (good amp for the money, but too bright in my opinion)

cary audio (good sound overall, very musical, but it didn’t have enough oomph)

parasound halo (good detail, great bass, but it still holds back some background detail that i can hear in others)

lexicon (very laid back and smooth. huge power, but if you like more detail or crisper highs, this amp will disappoint you)

McIntosh mc205 (probably the worst multichannel amp given its price point. it was too thin sounding, had detail but lacked bass.

butler audio (good amplifier. very warm and smooth sweet sounding. i think for the money, this is a better amp than the parasound a51)

pass labs (very VERY musical with excellent bass control. You can listen to this for hours and hours without getting ear fatigue. however, it DOES NOT do well in home theater applications if all you have is a 2 channel set up for movies. The midrange gets somewhat "muddy" or very weak sounding that you find yourself trying to turn it up.

classe audio (best amplifier for multi channel applications. i simply COULDNT FIND a better multi channel amplifier PERIOD. IT has amazing smoothness, amazing power and good bass control although i would say krell has much better bass control)

Update: The reviews above were done in January 2015. Below is my newest update as of October 2016:

PS AUDIO BHK 300 MONOBLOCKS: Amazing amps. Tons of detail and really amazing midrange. the bass is amazing too, but the one thing i will say is that those of you with speakers efficiency of 87db and below you will not have all the "loudness" that you may want from time to time. These amps go into protection mode when using a speaker such as the Salon, but only at very loud levels. Maybe 97db and above. If you don’t listen to extreme crazy levels, these amps will please you in every way.

Plinius Odeon 7 channel amp: This is THE BEST multichannel amp i have ever owned. Far , but FAR SUPERIOR to any other multichannel amp i have owned. In my opinion it destroyed all of the multichannel amps i mentioned above and below. The Odeon is an amp that is in a different tier group and it is in a league of its own. Amazing bass, treble and it made my center channel sound more articulate than ever before. The voices where never scrambled with the action scenes. It just separated everything very nicely.

Theta Dreadnaught D: Good detailed amp. Looks very elegant, has a pleasant sound, but i found it a tad too bright for my taste. I thought it was also somewhat "thin" sounding lacking body to the music. could be that it is because it is class d?

Krell Duo 300: Good amp. Nice and detailed with enough power to handle most speakers out there. I found that it does have a very nice "3d" sound through my electrostatics. Nothing to fault here on this amp.
Mark Levinson 532H: Great 2 channel amp. Lots of detail, amazing midrange which is what Mark Levinson is known for. It sounds very holographic and will please those of you looking for more detail and a better midrange. As far as bass, it is there, but it is not going to give you the slam of a pass labs 350.5 or JC1s for example. It is great for those that appreciate classical music, instrumental, etc, but not those of you who love tons of deep bass.

 It is articulate sounding too
Krell 7200: Plenty of detail and enough power for most people. i found that my rear speakers contained more information after installed this amp. One thing that i hated is that you must use xlr cables with this amp or else you lose most of its sound performance when using RCA’s.

Krell 402e: Great amp. Very powerful and will handle any speaker you wish. Power is incredible and with great detail. That said, i didn’t get all the bass that most reviewers mentioned. I thought it was "ok" in regards to bass. It was there, but it didn’t slam me to my listening chair.

Bryston 4B3: Good amp with a complete sound. I think this amp is more laid back than the SST2 version. I think those of you who found the SST2 version of this amp a little too forward with your speakers will definitely benefit from this amp’s warmth. Bryston has gone towards the "warm" side in my opinion with their new SST3 series. As always, they are built like tanks. I wouldn’t call this amp tube-like, but rather closer to what the classe audio delta 2 series sound like which is on the warm side of things.

Parasound JC1s: Good powerful amps. Amazing low end punch (far superior bass than the 402e). This amp is the amp that i consider complete from top to bottom in regards to sound. Nothing is lacking other than perhaps a nicer chassis. Parasound needs to rework their external appearance when they introduce new amps. This amp would sell much more if it had a revised external appearance because the sound is a great bang for the money. It made my 800 Nautilus scream and slam. Again, amazing low end punch.

Simaudio W7: Good detailed amp. This amp reminds me a lot of the Mark Levinson 532h. Great detail and very articulate. I think this amp will go well with bookshelves that are ported in order to compensate for what it lacks when it comes to the bass. That doesn’t mean it has no bass, but when it is no Parasound JC1 either.
Pass labs 350.5: Wow, where do i begin? maybe my first time around with the xa30.8 wasn’t as special as it was with this monster 350.5. It is just SPECTACULAR sounding with my electrostatics. The bass was THE BEST BASS i have ever heard from ANY amp period. The only amp that comes close would be the jC1s. It made me check my settings to make sure the bass was not boosted and kept making my jaw drop each time i heard it. It totally destroyed the krell 402e in every regard. The krell sounded too "flat" when compared to this amp. This amp had amazing mirange with great detail up top. In my opinion, this amp is the best bang for the money. i loved this amp so much that i ended up buying the amp that follows below.

Pass labs 250.8: What can i say here. This is THE BEST STEREO AMP i have ever heard. This amp destroys all the amps i have listed above today to include the pass labs 350.5. It is a refined 350.5 amp. It has more 3d sound which is something the 350.5 lacked. It has a level of detail that i really have never experienced before and the bass was amazing as well. I really thought it was the most complete power amplifier i have ever heard HANDS DOWN. To me, this is a benchmark of an amplifier. This is the amp that others should be judged by. NOTHING is lacking and right now it is the #1 amplifier that i have ever owned.

My current amps are Mcintosh MC601s: i decided to give these 601s a try and they don’t disappoint. They have great detail, HUGE soundstage, MASSIVE power and great midrange/highs. The bass is great, but it is no pass labs 250.8 or 350.5. As far as looks, these are the best looking amps i have ever owned. No contest there. i gotta be honest with you all, i never bought mcintosh monos before because i wasn’t really "wowed" by the mc452, but it could have been also because at that time i was using a processor as a preamp which i no longer do. Today, i own the Mcintosh C1100 2 chassis tube preamp which sounds unbelievable. All the amps i just described above have been amps that i auditioned with the C1100 as a preamp. The MC601s sound great without a doubt, but i will say that if you are looking for THE BEST sound for the money, these would not be it. However, Mcintosh remains UNMATCHED when it comes to looks and also resale value. Every other amp above depreciates much faster than Mcintosh.

That said, my future purchase (when i can find a steal of a deal) will be the Pass labs 350.8. I am tempted to make a preliminary statement which is that i feel this amp could be THE BEST stereo amp under 30k dollars. Again, i will be able to say more and confirm once i own it. I hope this update can help you all in your buying decisions!

The footers don’t have a special requirement when it comes to what’s under them. Nothing is said that they need to be placed on a shelf or else they don’t work. Plus, how is a 220 lb boulder not sturdy enough? This amp moves less than any shelf me or anyone else has... Nothing is moving it or causing vibration.
Also, the footers wouldn’t know that they are placed on top of an amp...unless the law of thermodynamics also takes into consideration the object under the footers in order to work...
Remember, mickey mouse exists...so does santa...
It's tough to interpret people's meaning when reading what they write but here is my attempt at clearing what i said:

Don't believe the hype that's out there. I bring things here in my room and shoot videos so you all can hear it and see it. I live with the stuff I talk about. I believe there is a lot of hype on all sorts of products out there that don't perform as advertised but there is so much marketing and advertising on forums that eventually you begin to believe what's said. That is why i said about the wall turning black color after 30 days...
If you read what's said about what you want, sometimes it is actually true but some other times it is not the case but your brain is so polluted with false information that you also begin to believe it does what is advertised.
I hope this helped clarify things.

I don't think anything at this price point sells well regardless of the brand.
I ordered the new artesania stands last week which are the upgraded version of the one I own. I should have them in about 2 weeks.
I have parted ways with my critical mass maxxum stands that the boulder sits on. They will be going away when the new ones arrive.
Just wanted to say that the pass labs xa60.8 are sounding quite good for an affordable amp. I’m very impressed so far. It has exceeded my expectations to be honest. No issues driving the alexx as long as I stay within reasonable volume levels.  Could it be the boulder linestage just elevating them? Or maybe the Nordost odin speaker cables? We shall find out!
No m900u available until June. They are backordered.
I'm not sure I want to revisit Luxman again. I've been there 4 times. I'm waiting on their next amp.
I'd say maybe 20-25%% are cables?
I actually am very surprised to hear the 60.8 sound this good. Don't get me wrong it isn't a Mephisto or boulder 2150 but the level of performance is still impressive.
Makes me wonder if buying an  expensive supporting cast and an affordable amp would actually change the way most of us feel about cheaper amplifiers. I don't even remember my xs300 sound this good which doesn't make sense.
I was having a conversation with Mike (suncoast audio) and we both agreed that it is harder for a manufacturer to build an outstanding linestage than it is to build an outstanding amplifier.
We algo agreed that you can take an average amp and match it with an outstanding preamp and that presentation would trump an outstanding amp with an average preamp.

I have more samples but people get bored and desperate to find out what is what. I could have made 5 videos but the attention span from many is quite small and this is why I chose a small sample size (3 songs).

I have already filmed the 60.8... video will be out next week and you will easily be able to listen to it and then go back to the momentum video from last week and compare both videos...
The Momentum are packed and ready to ship.
The xs300 were great amps but the heat 😱.... Just too hard to justify that heat when you have a single Mephisto demolishing things...

Next week you will get to hear the boulder with stock powercord versus Transparent Opus and then you will hear 4 rounds (videos) of the pass labs 60.8 with different cables and different tunes.
I want you all to simply gauge what happens to an amplifier  when it is partnered with powercords that cost more  than the amps themselves  and with a superior supporting cast.

yes there is some hissing, but it is faint..

drumroll...My take is coming up on the video releasing today at 1pm ET. plus find out which set up was my favorite one!!

I never said the 60.8 are better. People want to read and assume which is different. I said i don’t remember the xs300 sounding this good and that could be because they didn’t have the level of electronics i have today.
I’ll be very candid here though:
I am not interested in Coda amps. Nothing personal but I’m not researching or calling anyone to bring them in here. I am saying it respectfully and not trying to start up anything. Let’s put the word "coda" to rest.
If anyone wants to send me a coda amp to try, you all know my email address. Let’s do it ?
You said, this is about preferences right? Well Jay does not want to try coda anytime soon. (my preference). Nothing wrong with it correct ?

Official announcement:
If there are any coda owners, jay will eat shipping charges both ways to try your amp.

I am glad you all have learned something through this!!

Keep your mind open to new things. I want to teach you all that there might be stuff out there you are overlooking that could COMPLETELY elevate your system.

@grey9hound

I am glad you have seen and heard something you did not think would take you by storm. I am glad and i hope that maybe you can look into a Gryphon amp at some point since you seemed to have liked it.

I look forward to hearing from the rest of you all . Please let's keep the discussion healthy and engaging  😉

@diverti:
I'd say look into a used set of Nordost odin speaker cables. I also love synergistic research Galileo even if it's the old Galileo.
I am exploring different speaker brands. Not just wilson.
I'll miss the alexx dearly!

I didn’t like soulution with vac.

But vac with Mephisto is spectacular... Mind blogging...

My other secret preamp and amp will also be impressive. I promise.

Tubes, the wamm, so many ideas in my head. The show must go on and I'm glad you all are as excited as i am!
It wasn't easy to let go of everything, but i was already looking ahead and it was time.
Next speaker will certainly be at the level of alexx or above. Electronics will be a step below what i had here.
Let's see where I end up. So far, i don't know a clear cut path.

No synergy between vac and soulution. Probably bad mismatch from an impedance standpoint or something like that.

I can’t use 60.8, gryphon essence, simaudio 860, etc etc with mbl. They need power and if you all want me to bring a small amp then i don’t the speaker to use it with. There is also the constant talk about mbl being bright and not imaging nowhere near a wilson or magico...
Yes, i know i love finding stuff out on my own but speakers don't exactly sell quite easily in case they aren't my cup of tea.
They are being replaced. I will wait until D4 is announced in the summer.
There will be a model above the 800 according to what i heard. For the first time they will be building a 900 series B&w...im guess $50k msrp. Not sure
One thing is for sure: the new boulder gear is murdering a lot of brands out there. I can't recommend it enough. It was hard for me to see it go but I'm sure I'll eventually circle back to it. I predict I'll go back to boulder in the next few months.
Focal grande utopia are used at the boulder factory.

Mágico are used at synergistic research and at Wireworld to build their cables

Rockport uses gryphon amps at the factory.

I heard mágico is currently demoing pilium amps from Greece to see if they want to use them going forward in their factory.

Agreed. I doubt I'll be able to find an amp that can keep up with the 2150s unless i spend big money. Mephisto monos have been on my mind but you all know the Gryphon line is protected very tightly... I don't want to go to amps that expensive.
Well
I have selected and paid for my next pair of speakers. They should be with me in 2 weeks. I plan to unveil them by the end of the month.
Hmm.

Rockport Lyra
Rockport Cygnus
Mágico M6
Mágico MPro
Wilson Audio Chronosonic
Sonus faber aida 2

Sonus Faber SE
Estelon ForzaK

Kharma Exquisite Midi

Focals aren’t going anywhere. Don’t get ahead of yourself :)

The cables are calibrated based on the amps, source and preamp. Speakers arent taken into account.

Yep... I plan to shoot it before I have no system for 2 weeks. I have new things arriving and I have shipped my transparent cables to get calibrated.

My take on opus vs stock powercords

https://youtu.be/-GW2ymZGXIg

Please read the video description to find out which presentation had the opus powercords.

I just connected the Mephisto solos and the VAC Master after being unplugged for a week and from a dead cold start, 30 seconds into it, I want to close this thread and my youtube channel. It is just F@CK!NG SPECTACULAR. It does not matter what song it is, what decade, good, bad, etc, It will blow your mind. I can’t believe how amazing this is guys.

Just put it into context, I matched these 2 components going by my gut feeling and based on my own trials and I NAILED IT. The cheapest linestage I’ve had here in the last 6 months and I can’t believe how amazing it is.

You want air? musicality? resolution? huge soundstage 3d? spaciousness?

It is all there.. I plan to record tomorrow once everything is completely warmed up and uploaded a few videos later this week. Stay tuned... i will be using some $800 tubes on this linestage (recommended by a dealer friend of mine) which are said to be leaps and bounds superior to the factory tubes.

Here's a hint to help you zoom in on which speaker it could be:

Shipping weight inside their crates is 1,100 lbs...

@viber6

Although i don’t like it when others shove you around, i can’t argue with them because you continue to do the things that have been historically burning you:

  1. recommending equipment you have never owned
  2. drawing up conclusions based on your preference
  3. providing help where it isn’t being requested
  4. having conversations with some people within the thread that eventually take away from the natural flow of what people are really interested in

Sometimes it feels as you are trying to "fit in" and go through ups and downs (you stop doing this behavior only to return a few weeks later and do the same thing again) and i don’t know if you don’t realize you are doing it?

Look, i was guilty of being combative in the past. I had differences with some people ( @mrdecibel @grey9hound @kren0006 , and i am sure others i can’t remember) and then i realized that i was handling things the wrong way. I had to take a step back and understand that they all have their own journey as well and I am nobody to tell them what to do or not to do or how to listen to music/gear/etc.

We all want healthy, respectful discussions WITHOUT barking or imposing our views on others especially when there is no "hands on" experience with such recommendations.

Everyone who has been on your case is not doing it on purpose, but rather because you call for it after repetitive behavior that i think you can admit you are guilty of.

I have people on here who have been riding with me from my early days and who post on here regularly and have helped the organic growth of this thread (THANK YOU BY THE WAY) and they are not judgmental, but even they are tired of what is happening.

Every person who has told you something at one point or another is only doing it because you pushed it for far too long until they could not take it anymore.

Lastly, please take a step back and try to understand what is triggering you to do the same thing over and over again. It keeps being the main obstacle between you and everyone else on here and i think if you managed to figure that out then you wouldn’t be getting the reaction you get.

It is 2022, maybe it is time to hit a reset button inside of you? if you simply feel that you are who you are and you can’t change then perhaps this thread is not the right environment for you and it might actually hurt you down the road due to all the constant heat you take. It CAN NOT feel nice to wake up each day and see something negative written about you on here. That has to hurt and I am surprised you have been handling it for so long. I personally would have just never come back.

Ok folks,

On today's video, i will be be giving you my opinion on the Nordost Qkore. Is this thing worth the money? who should be buying it? what are its CONs? What does it do for your system?

Tune in to find out! (1130AM)

@riaa_award_collectors_on_facebook

I see your point, but taking heat when you don't really have to can't be good press.

I am having to take heat because i am public and have a channel so it comes with the territory, but if i did not have a channel or a thread i would not put up with it. I would just walk out and find something else to do with my time or a place where i am welcomed.

@jdechamp

You and many others have the same sentiments. I am only stepping in this time because i want for viber to "regroup" and understand what is happening without me having to be abrasive towards him. However, one can only help a person that truly wants to be helped. If he continues to do the same thing then I will not intervene and unfortunately let him seek his own demise.

Amplification:
I am close to finalizing the deal on my next amps. I just need to see if i need an electrician first.
It will be a shock for many of you if i end up with these amps I’m negotiating...

Another hint on the speakers:
Very little feedback from end users when it comes to these speakers and many dealers don't display it. Chances are you all haven't seen it in person.

Boulder 2110 can make just about any amplifier sing. You are assuming here by saying boulder 2110 doesn't sound good with pass. I can assure you that you can use this 2110 with any amplifier regardless of price and it will squeeze the most performance out of such amplifier.
Remember, a well designed preamp can almost turn an average amp into a great amp. A well designed amp can't turn an average preamp into a great preamp. The preamp carries a bigger responsibility than the amp. Of course having the best of both components is the best way to go.
I just pulled the trigger on my very next integrated for the new speakers.
I am wondering how this integrated will do against all my former integrateds..

Any thoughts on the Pass Labs 60.8 video from today?
You all see how if i bring something affordable then there is criticism for mixing it up with top cables and electronics and then if i only buy top end stuff i get criticized for buying stuff that is too much money that most can't relate to ?
Jay never wins huh 🤐

@divertiti

So I think the furutech is broken in... It took roughly 500 hours.

Very nice improvement for sure.

Ok guys, the video of the vac preamp and Gryphon amp will be released tomorrow. I have 3 songs total but I will release one song tomorrow. I think you will like what you hear very much.

I have heard horns but they seem to be too fatiguing...the dynamics are almost too much for me although I know that's one of their greatest strengths.
