My Long List of Amplifiers and My Personal Review of Each!

So I have been in a long journey looking to find the best amplifiers for my martin logan montis. As you know, the match between an amplifier and speakers has to be a good "marriage" and needs to be blend exquisitely. Right now, I think I might have found the best sounding amplifier for martin logan. I have gone through approximately 34-36 amplifiers in the past 12 months. Some of these are:

Bryston ST, SST, SST2 series
NAD M25
PARASOUND HALO
PARASOUND CLASSIC
KRELL TAS
KRELL KAV 500
KRELL CHORUS
ROTEL RMB 1095
CLASSE CT 5300
CLASSE CA 2200
CLASSE CA 5200
MCINTOSH MC 205
CARY AUDIO CINEMA 7
OUTLAW AUDIO 755
LEXICON RX7
PASS LABS XA 30.8
BUTLER AUDIO 5150
ATI SIGNATURE SERIES 6005

With all that said, the amplifiers I mentioned above are the ones that in my opinion are worth mentioning. To make a long story short, there is NO 5 CHANNEL POWER AMP that sounds as good as a 3ch and 2ch amplifier combination. i have done both experiments and the truth is that YOU DO lose details and more channel separation, etc when you select a 5 channel power amplifier of any manufacturer.
My recollection of what each amp sounded like is as follows:

ATI SIGNATURE SERIES 6005 (great power and amazing soundstage. Very low noise floor, BUT this amplifiers NEEDS TO BE cranked up in order to fully enjoy it. If you like listening at low volume levels or somewhat moderate, you are wasting your time here. This amp won’t sound any different than many other brands out there at this volume. The bass is great, good highs although they are a bit bright for my taste)

NAD M25 (very smooth, powerful, but somewhat thin sounding as far as bass goes)
Bryston sst2(detailed, good soundstage, good power, but can be a little forward with certain speakers which could make them ear fatiguing at loud volumes)

Krell (fast sounding, nice bass attack, nice highs, but some detail does get lost with certain speakers)

rotel (good amp for the money, but too bright in my opinion)

cary audio (good sound overall, very musical, but it didn’t have enough oomph)

parasound halo (good detail, great bass, but it still holds back some background detail that i can hear in others)

lexicon (very laid back and smooth. huge power, but if you like more detail or crisper highs, this amp will disappoint you)

McIntosh mc205 (probably the worst multichannel amp given its price point. it was too thin sounding, had detail but lacked bass.

butler audio (good amplifier. very warm and smooth sweet sounding. i think for the money, this is a better amp than the parasound a51)

pass labs (very VERY musical with excellent bass control. You can listen to this for hours and hours without getting ear fatigue. however, it DOES NOT do well in home theater applications if all you have is a 2 channel set up for movies. The midrange gets somewhat "muddy" or very weak sounding that you find yourself trying to turn it up.

classe audio (best amplifier for multi channel applications. i simply COULDNT FIND a better multi channel amplifier PERIOD. IT has amazing smoothness, amazing power and good bass control although i would say krell has much better bass control)

Update: The reviews above were done in January 2015. Below is my newest update as of October 2016:

PS AUDIO BHK 300 MONOBLOCKS: Amazing amps. Tons of detail and really amazing midrange. the bass is amazing too, but the one thing i will say is that those of you with speakers efficiency of 87db and below you will not have all the "loudness" that you may want from time to time. These amps go into protection mode when using a speaker such as the Salon, but only at very loud levels. Maybe 97db and above. If you don’t listen to extreme crazy levels, these amps will please you in every way.

Plinius Odeon 7 channel amp: This is THE BEST multichannel amp i have ever owned. Far , but FAR SUPERIOR to any other multichannel amp i have owned. In my opinion it destroyed all of the multichannel amps i mentioned above and below. The Odeon is an amp that is in a different tier group and it is in a league of its own. Amazing bass, treble and it made my center channel sound more articulate than ever before. The voices where never scrambled with the action scenes. It just separated everything very nicely.

Theta Dreadnaught D: Good detailed amp. Looks very elegant, has a pleasant sound, but i found it a tad too bright for my taste. I thought it was also somewhat "thin" sounding lacking body to the music. could be that it is because it is class d?

Krell Duo 300: Good amp. Nice and detailed with enough power to handle most speakers out there. I found that it does have a very nice "3d" sound through my electrostatics. Nothing to fault here on this amp.
Mark Levinson 532H: Great 2 channel amp. Lots of detail, amazing midrange which is what Mark Levinson is known for. It sounds very holographic and will please those of you looking for more detail and a better midrange. As far as bass, it is there, but it is not going to give you the slam of a pass labs 350.5 or JC1s for example. It is great for those that appreciate classical music, instrumental, etc, but not those of you who love tons of deep bass.

 It is articulate sounding too
Krell 7200: Plenty of detail and enough power for most people. i found that my rear speakers contained more information after installed this amp. One thing that i hated is that you must use xlr cables with this amp or else you lose most of its sound performance when using RCA’s.

Krell 402e: Great amp. Very powerful and will handle any speaker you wish. Power is incredible and with great detail. That said, i didn’t get all the bass that most reviewers mentioned. I thought it was "ok" in regards to bass. It was there, but it didn’t slam me to my listening chair.

Bryston 4B3: Good amp with a complete sound. I think this amp is more laid back than the SST2 version. I think those of you who found the SST2 version of this amp a little too forward with your speakers will definitely benefit from this amp’s warmth. Bryston has gone towards the "warm" side in my opinion with their new SST3 series. As always, they are built like tanks. I wouldn’t call this amp tube-like, but rather closer to what the classe audio delta 2 series sound like which is on the warm side of things.

Parasound JC1s: Good powerful amps. Amazing low end punch (far superior bass than the 402e). This amp is the amp that i consider complete from top to bottom in regards to sound. Nothing is lacking other than perhaps a nicer chassis. Parasound needs to rework their external appearance when they introduce new amps. This amp would sell much more if it had a revised external appearance because the sound is a great bang for the money. It made my 800 Nautilus scream and slam. Again, amazing low end punch.

Simaudio W7: Good detailed amp. This amp reminds me a lot of the Mark Levinson 532h. Great detail and very articulate. I think this amp will go well with bookshelves that are ported in order to compensate for what it lacks when it comes to the bass. That doesn’t mean it has no bass, but when it is no Parasound JC1 either.
Pass labs 350.5: Wow, where do i begin? maybe my first time around with the xa30.8 wasn’t as special as it was with this monster 350.5. It is just SPECTACULAR sounding with my electrostatics. The bass was THE BEST BASS i have ever heard from ANY amp period. The only amp that comes close would be the jC1s. It made me check my settings to make sure the bass was not boosted and kept making my jaw drop each time i heard it. It totally destroyed the krell 402e in every regard. The krell sounded too "flat" when compared to this amp. This amp had amazing mirange with great detail up top. In my opinion, this amp is the best bang for the money. i loved this amp so much that i ended up buying the amp that follows below.

Pass labs 250.8: What can i say here. This is THE BEST STEREO AMP i have ever heard. This amp destroys all the amps i have listed above today to include the pass labs 350.5. It is a refined 350.5 amp. It has more 3d sound which is something the 350.5 lacked. It has a level of detail that i really have never experienced before and the bass was amazing as well. I really thought it was the most complete power amplifier i have ever heard HANDS DOWN. To me, this is a benchmark of an amplifier. This is the amp that others should be judged by. NOTHING is lacking and right now it is the #1 amplifier that i have ever owned.

My current amps are Mcintosh MC601s: i decided to give these 601s a try and they don’t disappoint. They have great detail, HUGE soundstage, MASSIVE power and great midrange/highs. The bass is great, but it is no pass labs 250.8 or 350.5. As far as looks, these are the best looking amps i have ever owned. No contest there. i gotta be honest with you all, i never bought mcintosh monos before because i wasn’t really "wowed" by the mc452, but it could have been also because at that time i was using a processor as a preamp which i no longer do. Today, i own the Mcintosh C1100 2 chassis tube preamp which sounds unbelievable. All the amps i just described above have been amps that i auditioned with the C1100 as a preamp. The MC601s sound great without a doubt, but i will say that if you are looking for THE BEST sound for the money, these would not be it. However, Mcintosh remains UNMATCHED when it comes to looks and also resale value. Every other amp above depreciates much faster than Mcintosh.

That said, my future purchase (when i can find a steal of a deal) will be the Pass labs 350.8. I am tempted to make a preliminary statement which is that i feel this amp could be THE BEST stereo amp under 30k dollars. Again, i will be able to say more and confirm once i own it. I hope this update can help you all in your buying decisions!

I actually drove 8 hours yesterday to pick up my next chapter:

The ULTRA HIGH END AMPLIFIER (New Amplifier Tier Group)

You should know by now that I only have 3 amp tier groups:

  1. Low
  2. Mid
  3. High

This amp won't make an appearance until late February, early March. I'm only giving you all some initial information (I probably shouldn't have said anything).

I want to do one thing at a time. The Boulder/Transparent combo has been running for about 10 days straight so i want to finish with that first and do a a/b comparison of stock pcs vs transparent without letting you all know what is playing. Once that is done, i will circle back to the momentum/CM experiment which has been long enough now since the footers have been under the Momentum. So if all goes as planned, this weekend we will do the Boulder/Transparent/Stock powercord video and then next weekend the Momentum/CM video. This means that the Pass labs 60.8 will be shown playing music around the 26th of the this month.

Anyhow, there will be a video dropping today at 12pm ET showing the changes the system has gone through after having the transparent cables playing music for about 160-180 hours. I think this is as good as things will get so stay tuned for this video.

I plan to roll out a paid - members only - YouTube section which will contain behind the scenes, videos not aired, personal amp ranking, access to all future video content as well as all the new stuff that is coming up on my channel that nobody knows about.

This is something that many of my viewers have encouraged me to do since they are always wanting to know what I have coming up and don’t want to wait. Right now, I have 4 reviews finished which haven’t been released but members would have access to them. More people are wanting more content and a more intimate closer look inside the room.

More to come soon guys. Thanks for  the support.

Hahaha. Yes sir!
I've been dealing with amplifiers for quite sometime and luxman is easily another animal in mono configuration.
Bigger sounding, much better bass and grip on the woofers, deep DEEP soundstage and more of a holographic feeling.
Wanna elevate luxman monos more?
Get a pair of audioquest Dragon powercords for the amps and be blown away even more.  :)

It is 110am and the focal maestros are simply taking me away...

I’m beyond impressed here. I need time to gather my thoughts but the Mephisto, transparent and focal is really a devastating combination. I managed to put together this combination based on gut instinct and it PAID OFF!

I’m in no way shape or form looking in the rear view mirror anymore. This has been an outstanding choice on all counts.

As a matter of fact, I was lining up another big top dog speaker and now I'm simply going to cancel that idea.

When it comes to me, i don't dislike the Luxman 900u. As a matter of fact, I was thinking of bringing a pair of monos for my alexx until I was told they are on backorder until June...
I wanted to do the momentum m400 vs Luxman 900u monos.
I don't collect any paycheck from Luxman by the way. I've always been vocal about how freaking good it is but I do understand that this hobby is subjective.
You could also say the same thing about pass labs, Bryston, etc.
Luxman sells a ton of these amps so the higher sales volume the more you’ll see on the used market. It is all relevant;
How many Mephistos have you seen on the used market in the last 3 years in the U.S.? (Not Europe). NONE. why?
1. Not many people own them
2. Not many people are willing to pay the big sticker price
3. Distributor protects the hell out of the brand so little to no discount at all is often what you encounter when buying gryphon.
I waited for 3 years to find a Mephisto on audiogon and I finally gave up. I had to buy one from Suncoast audio and I also had to order a Pandora Preamp.
Gryphon separates (especially their top pieces which aren’t discontinued) are costly and never cheap which is exactly why sales are far less than other brands.
Boulder is now doing what Gryphon is doing too. They are now forbidding discounts and even blocking sales for some dealers. For instance, if a dealer is working with a customer, boulder will email all dealers forbidding to work with this customer because there is already a dealer working with him. This basically stops dealers from competing against each other by discounting the line in order to make the sale. Boulder actually lost two big sales by blocking sales and they were fine with it.
The bigger brands are getting tougher and stricter in order to protect their lines. This is a trend that will slowly begin to roll out in the next coming months.
So essentially don’t assume that luxman being on the used market as any sort of indication of dissatisfied customers. It might also have to do with people not knowing what the they are doing when it comes to system matching or they don't really know what kind of amp they want: (neutral or sweet).
Neutral amps are more demanding and will ask you for far more than sweet sounding amps.

Ps: all luxman 900u are on back order until June.

i had them in 2 separate rooms that were about 16 wide by 18 deep.
Remember, i am comparing them to the speakers i have owned over the last 36 months which were pretty good speakers.
Momentum and critical mass video just wrapped up.
I am in the process of editing so be on the lookout later this week.
Are the momentum m400s better with or without the critical mass 1.5 footers ?  Or are they not all that with the momentum either?
We shall find out... This next one is gonna be EPIC... go buy headphones if you don't have any...

Here is a memory I wanted to share with you all. This was my system this week but 8 years ago!

I started from the bottom folks...I can relate to each and everyone of you more than you know!

I don't remember how they sounded without the stand. Now I'm beginning to wonder...
Well.... One of my dearly loved amps has been sold...
I have 4 weeks to play with it before it goes to a new home.
Don’t be shocked once you know which one it is !
Coming up today at  6PM Eastern Time:

Critical Mass 1.5 footers with Momentum m400s. This will be the final test of these footers with amplifiers. The format is the same as before which is 2 presentations, (one with and one without the footers) and you give me  your impressions as to which presentation you preferred.

You all ready???

Round 1: TUBES VERSUS SOLID STATE.

Please vote on the poll I posted on my YouTube channel.

As always, feel free to also share your favorite presentation on here.

Haven’t found one that beats the stock cables on the linestage. I am still doing trials though.
So, i have a question for you all:

How many of you currently own 2 amplifiers (or more)  and why?
i am interested in hearing your thoughts because i am planning to talk about living with a Gryphon Mephisto and Boulder 2150s. Each day is a battle trying to really dig deep and figure out which amplifier should stay and why. One day i prefer the Gryphon and the next day i prefer the Boulder. My mind simply does not let me choose and it becomes quite complicated to be honest.
Please let me know if any of you own or have owned 2 amplifiers at once and why.
Poll from my last video:
Here is what people are choosingOn the momentum/critical mass:

Presentation #1 - 49%
Presentation #2 - 51%

Sooooo...  Are any of you now questioning your selection....

To give people two different flavors to compare and let their own ears decide what they like best (yes through YouTube)

Omg I'm loving this!!

I can't wait to disclose what is what...

Use this shootout as an example of what your ears really like and not what your eyes prefer. There is a difference between both!

Gryphon Mephisto versus Dan D Agostino Momentum m400s tonight at 7pm eastern time.
Looks like presentation 1 is ahead...

55% presentation 1
45% presentation 2

You will soon find out my thoughts
Votes are 12 for gryphon and 4 for dag on the comments.
To say " get rid of Mephisto" seems a little way out there if we go by what everyone is selecting. I find it interesting to see how the general public feels about brands in general. I have my own preferences of course ,but I am always  curious to see what other people hear. Preferences are key.

When it comes to the video of the momentum with and without footers, the results are in:
Presentation #1 - 56%
Presentation #2 - 44%

You will soon find out which presentation had the footers. This is WHY i love blind tests. It eliminates the "bias".

Don’t worry man...nobody is making buying decisions over these heavy hitters...just listen with your own ears and make your own conclusion. You are simply choosing whichever presentation you like. Don’t overthink it or make it more complicated than what it already is for me.
I presented 2 systems and you are just choosing whichever you like.
If we are to embark on which Powercords should go with which amp or which speaker cables etc etc then when would I finish and be able to present something to you?
We aren’t making life decisions here..
It’s a pandemic, everybody is bored, unable to hear any of this stuff and the rest of the youtube channels just do this: blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah and then thank you for listening and until the next episode. I’m the only person doing these shootouts on youtube especially with these components.

Maybe i should sit in between my boulders and alexx and say blah blah blah blah blah blah blah and then end my video at the 10-15 min mark?

Trust me it is much easier to sit and talk talk like other channels do. It’s much harder to lift these amps, buy stands, all the cables and everything else that goes into this production. There is nothing easier than to grab a chair and sit there between my equipment and talk about random stuff: using boulder amps as a coffee table, using the Mephistos heatsinks as a kitchen knife. Can the Mephisto boil water or cook an egg if i placed it on top while it is running full bias ?

It never ceases to amaze me how some channels stay relevant and with a nice amount of subscribers when all they do is talk and then sometimes they talk about dumb topics:

" Are you an audiophile if you own a a walkman?"
" Do you have good ears if you own a bose stereo"
" Do you listen to your music standing or sitting down"

I don’t get it... Maybe this is rant but with some validity behind it.

I agree. However, i think that most people who are on here are the same who have followed me for quite sometime but you do bring up a great point.
It’s a really tough question to answer. I can’t quite gauge whether things went up and down on a daily basis.
What i can say is that things did change but I’d say in 10 days you should be where you need to be.
Remember what I said, " if you stand in front of a white wall for 30 days and say to yourself that the wall is black and NOT white color" you will start to see the wall turn black color...
Well I'm happy to know there is someone else besides me that feels the same way. Lol
I plan to use the footers on the preamp and then the dac. I think I'm done trying them under the amps but I still have a desire to try them under the 60.8..

Folks,

I can not thank you enough for taking the time to dissect all videos through your systems.

What I want to articulate here is that the reasons for this exercise were as follows:

  1. To have fun since some of you are working from home
  2. To hear TWO of the BEST amplifiers/preamplifiers
  3. To let you hear gear that you probably will never hear in person
  4. To let YOUR EARS decide for YOU and not the gear

With that out of the way, PLEASE USE THIS as a data point for your future purchases. If you are a long-time tube lover (greyhound), and you end up finding out that you selected solid state on 2 out of 3 presentations then maybe you are not that much of a tube lover as you thought you were? or maybe you simply love top notch solid state more than top notch tube gear, but you never knew you did because - well you have never compared THIS LEVEL of amplifier/preamp topology ?

The point i am trying to make with these comparisons is that if you are the type of person that will DENY that you preferred the opposite of what you would normally choose then you are pretty much only lying to....YOURSELF... NOBODY ELSE

If you selected tubes instead of the typical solid state you normally own then i suggest you go back to the drawing board....there might be a tube setup you might enjoy more... If you selected solid state instead of tubes and you have a been a tube lover...time to stop heating up your room with those glasses and begin to find solid state gear that checks your boxes.

Thanks again guys!
