My Long List of Amplifiers and My Personal Review of Each!

So I have been in a long journey looking to find the best amplifiers for my martin logan montis. As you know, the match between an amplifier and speakers has to be a good "marriage" and needs to be blend exquisitely. Right now, I think I might have found the best sounding amplifier for martin logan. I have gone through approximately 34-36 amplifiers in the past 12 months. Some of these are:

Bryston ST, SST, SST2 series
NAD M25
PARASOUND HALO
PARASOUND CLASSIC
KRELL TAS
KRELL KAV 500
KRELL CHORUS
ROTEL RMB 1095
CLASSE CT 5300
CLASSE CA 2200
CLASSE CA 5200
MCINTOSH MC 205
CARY AUDIO CINEMA 7
OUTLAW AUDIO 755
LEXICON RX7
PASS LABS XA 30.8
BUTLER AUDIO 5150
ATI SIGNATURE SERIES 6005

With all that said, the amplifiers I mentioned above are the ones that in my opinion are worth mentioning. To make a long story short, there is NO 5 CHANNEL POWER AMP that sounds as good as a 3ch and 2ch amplifier combination. i have done both experiments and the truth is that YOU DO lose details and more channel separation, etc when you select a 5 channel power amplifier of any manufacturer.
My recollection of what each amp sounded like is as follows:

ATI SIGNATURE SERIES 6005 (great power and amazing soundstage. Very low noise floor, BUT this amplifiers NEEDS TO BE cranked up in order to fully enjoy it. If you like listening at low volume levels or somewhat moderate, you are wasting your time here. This amp won’t sound any different than many other brands out there at this volume. The bass is great, good highs although they are a bit bright for my taste)

NAD M25 (very smooth, powerful, but somewhat thin sounding as far as bass goes)
Bryston sst2(detailed, good soundstage, good power, but can be a little forward with certain speakers which could make them ear fatiguing at loud volumes)

Krell (fast sounding, nice bass attack, nice highs, but some detail does get lost with certain speakers)

rotel (good amp for the money, but too bright in my opinion)

cary audio (good sound overall, very musical, but it didn’t have enough oomph)

parasound halo (good detail, great bass, but it still holds back some background detail that i can hear in others)

lexicon (very laid back and smooth. huge power, but if you like more detail or crisper highs, this amp will disappoint you)

McIntosh mc205 (probably the worst multichannel amp given its price point. it was too thin sounding, had detail but lacked bass.

butler audio (good amplifier. very warm and smooth sweet sounding. i think for the money, this is a better amp than the parasound a51)

pass labs (very VERY musical with excellent bass control. You can listen to this for hours and hours without getting ear fatigue. however, it DOES NOT do well in home theater applications if all you have is a 2 channel set up for movies. The midrange gets somewhat "muddy" or very weak sounding that you find yourself trying to turn it up.

classe audio (best amplifier for multi channel applications. i simply COULDNT FIND a better multi channel amplifier PERIOD. IT has amazing smoothness, amazing power and good bass control although i would say krell has much better bass control)

Update: The reviews above were done in January 2015. Below is my newest update as of October 2016:

PS AUDIO BHK 300 MONOBLOCKS: Amazing amps. Tons of detail and really amazing midrange. the bass is amazing too, but the one thing i will say is that those of you with speakers efficiency of 87db and below you will not have all the "loudness" that you may want from time to time. These amps go into protection mode when using a speaker such as the Salon, but only at very loud levels. Maybe 97db and above. If you don’t listen to extreme crazy levels, these amps will please you in every way.

Plinius Odeon 7 channel amp: This is THE BEST multichannel amp i have ever owned. Far , but FAR SUPERIOR to any other multichannel amp i have owned. In my opinion it destroyed all of the multichannel amps i mentioned above and below. The Odeon is an amp that is in a different tier group and it is in a league of its own. Amazing bass, treble and it made my center channel sound more articulate than ever before. The voices where never scrambled with the action scenes. It just separated everything very nicely.

Theta Dreadnaught D: Good detailed amp. Looks very elegant, has a pleasant sound, but i found it a tad too bright for my taste. I thought it was also somewhat "thin" sounding lacking body to the music. could be that it is because it is class d?

Krell Duo 300: Good amp. Nice and detailed with enough power to handle most speakers out there. I found that it does have a very nice "3d" sound through my electrostatics. Nothing to fault here on this amp.
Mark Levinson 532H: Great 2 channel amp. Lots of detail, amazing midrange which is what Mark Levinson is known for. It sounds very holographic and will please those of you looking for more detail and a better midrange. As far as bass, it is there, but it is not going to give you the slam of a pass labs 350.5 or JC1s for example. It is great for those that appreciate classical music, instrumental, etc, but not those of you who love tons of deep bass.

 It is articulate sounding too
Krell 7200: Plenty of detail and enough power for most people. i found that my rear speakers contained more information after installed this amp. One thing that i hated is that you must use xlr cables with this amp or else you lose most of its sound performance when using RCA’s.

Krell 402e: Great amp. Very powerful and will handle any speaker you wish. Power is incredible and with great detail. That said, i didn’t get all the bass that most reviewers mentioned. I thought it was "ok" in regards to bass. It was there, but it didn’t slam me to my listening chair.

Bryston 4B3: Good amp with a complete sound. I think this amp is more laid back than the SST2 version. I think those of you who found the SST2 version of this amp a little too forward with your speakers will definitely benefit from this amp’s warmth. Bryston has gone towards the "warm" side in my opinion with their new SST3 series. As always, they are built like tanks. I wouldn’t call this amp tube-like, but rather closer to what the classe audio delta 2 series sound like which is on the warm side of things.

Parasound JC1s: Good powerful amps. Amazing low end punch (far superior bass than the 402e). This amp is the amp that i consider complete from top to bottom in regards to sound. Nothing is lacking other than perhaps a nicer chassis. Parasound needs to rework their external appearance when they introduce new amps. This amp would sell much more if it had a revised external appearance because the sound is a great bang for the money. It made my 800 Nautilus scream and slam. Again, amazing low end punch.

Simaudio W7: Good detailed amp. This amp reminds me a lot of the Mark Levinson 532h. Great detail and very articulate. I think this amp will go well with bookshelves that are ported in order to compensate for what it lacks when it comes to the bass. That doesn’t mean it has no bass, but when it is no Parasound JC1 either.
Pass labs 350.5: Wow, where do i begin? maybe my first time around with the xa30.8 wasn’t as special as it was with this monster 350.5. It is just SPECTACULAR sounding with my electrostatics. The bass was THE BEST BASS i have ever heard from ANY amp period. The only amp that comes close would be the jC1s. It made me check my settings to make sure the bass was not boosted and kept making my jaw drop each time i heard it. It totally destroyed the krell 402e in every regard. The krell sounded too "flat" when compared to this amp. This amp had amazing mirange with great detail up top. In my opinion, this amp is the best bang for the money. i loved this amp so much that i ended up buying the amp that follows below.

Pass labs 250.8: What can i say here. This is THE BEST STEREO AMP i have ever heard. This amp destroys all the amps i have listed above today to include the pass labs 350.5. It is a refined 350.5 amp. It has more 3d sound which is something the 350.5 lacked. It has a level of detail that i really have never experienced before and the bass was amazing as well. I really thought it was the most complete power amplifier i have ever heard HANDS DOWN. To me, this is a benchmark of an amplifier. This is the amp that others should be judged by. NOTHING is lacking and right now it is the #1 amplifier that i have ever owned.

My current amps are Mcintosh MC601s: i decided to give these 601s a try and they don’t disappoint. They have great detail, HUGE soundstage, MASSIVE power and great midrange/highs. The bass is great, but it is no pass labs 250.8 or 350.5. As far as looks, these are the best looking amps i have ever owned. No contest there. i gotta be honest with you all, i never bought mcintosh monos before because i wasn’t really "wowed" by the mc452, but it could have been also because at that time i was using a processor as a preamp which i no longer do. Today, i own the Mcintosh C1100 2 chassis tube preamp which sounds unbelievable. All the amps i just described above have been amps that i auditioned with the C1100 as a preamp. The MC601s sound great without a doubt, but i will say that if you are looking for THE BEST sound for the money, these would not be it. However, Mcintosh remains UNMATCHED when it comes to looks and also resale value. Every other amp above depreciates much faster than Mcintosh.

That said, my future purchase (when i can find a steal of a deal) will be the Pass labs 350.8. I am tempted to make a preliminary statement which is that i feel this amp could be THE BEST stereo amp under 30k dollars. Again, i will be able to say more and confirm once i own it. I hope this update can help you all in your buying decisions!

Well,
Here it is... My long awaited tekton review plus my preliminary feeling on critical mass footers.

https://youtu.be/pV237KJMw5k
@mrdecibel
I agree i was. But to be sincere here, I don't have the time to edit and "doll up" the videos. At the end of the day people want to hear my opinion and what i think. I just want to talk into the mic and upload my comments as they flow out of my head.

@thezaksI:

I will leave them under boulder for another week and then remove then and see what happens to the sound. This will be the best indication of what happens to the sound. There is no "waiting period" to hear the boulders without footers. It will be an instant comparison by removing them.
I made an effort to not puncture anyone's feelings about Tekton while still delivering the message and I believe I did that quite well.
I have to believe there are far more tekton Ulfberht than Alexx, but this doesn't mean anything.. this means it's a more affordable product which means more people can buy it. Are there more camrys than Bentleys? Yes of course there are.

I won't attack or bash anything because I have mentioned it multiple times, i am not married to any of this including all my gear. I will simply state my experience with products and nothing else. Remember, I'm sharing my view with things i have here and not using someone else's system or room to judge.
I gain absolutely nothing from trashing a brand and that simply has not ever been my intent. If i feel a brand isn't worth the asking price, i will say it and i did just that with the accuphase e800. If something is a rip off, i will say it and don't care if it affects me when I have to sell it (i did this accuphase if you remember correctly).
Will there be a speaker that i feel bests my Alexx for me and my taste? Sure there is always better. Have i met that speaker? Not really , not in my room anyway.
Don't worry, i got another speaker coming soon....should ship out tomorrow and yes I bought this one and it is not on loan. It is quite affordable actually. I actually can't freaking believe i got talked into buying another speaker when i didn't want to keep messing with the Alexx. They are so damn heavy even if I push them on wheels. Oh well, you know I'm probably the craziest guy out there. When these new speakers arrive, i will do a live chat to unveil them.
Thanks mrdecibel.
Well Tekton has responded to my video on the comment section of my videos. If you’re interested in hearing what Eric said, please go check out my video.
Eric was great at taking my feedback and as you can see he was a class act. This is how things should be and in the end you all win with my thoughts and they also win with my constructive criticism of the product as well as  what can be done to take their products to the next level.

Cheers !
i will try the footers near the feet of my amps and see what happens. I will keep you all updated
Ok guys,
Give me your thoughts on the ayre preamp and what you are hearing. I am curious to know your thoughts.

Techno, can you expand on your thoughts above as to what is better or worse in your opinion when it comes to the ayre ?
Well...i think that there is also the fact the MAYBE our brains begin to think things sound better all of a sudden lol.... Hallucinating :).

Vac monoblocks are back from the dead after a 2 month hiatus. For the first time I partner them with the matching vac master Preamp.

This is such a different presentation than the Mephisto.

My thoughts to come soon!

Not sure if you all are having issues with tidal but right now I've been troubleshooting all day. It appears that the MQA format and Reebook are randomly skipping certain parts of random songs that I have played a million times. We tried everything possible but the issue happens sporadically. This does not happen at all with QOBUZ. By the way, this issue is happening through ROON only.

Taiko vía USB into MSB Reference and I'm using roon to stream tidal and QOBUZ.

Meh.
Right now i am going to be selling and listing Mephisto and boulder. I could live with either one so whichever sells first at this point. Wont really make a dfference when it comes to satisfaction because both have a special thing going.
Top 2 amps on my list. The rest of the amps I've owned would be fighting for third place.
Monos will ways have the upper hand. Yes they are better than a single luxman. I prefer the ref10 for revel salon 2. It has nothing to do with luxman preamp. The ref10 made my salons come to life and they had tremendous bass with it.
Unfortunately the Boulder 2150 is not an amp that will sell fast due to the money that it is. I suspect the Mephisto will sell faster because it has never been available on the used market and it would be substantially less money for a lot of people.
That said, i want to ask you all what i should do in regards to powercords with Boulder. I am torn because i could either get 2 - brand new - Transparent Opus terminated for Boulder OR get my Audioquest Hurricane re-terminated for Boulder.... Damn it this is a tough one...

@viber6

I typically let the thread "cleanse" itself and I have been making a huge effort of not bumping heads with anyone as I did in my early days.

Although I really appreciate your passion for music and the fact that you are a great violinist (Steve from GT audio validated this), it might be more beneficial if you begin to take your strong opinions to private messages if it's going to be an ongoing "ordinance" that the general public on here doesn't want to hear.

Sometimes saying less is actually saying more.

Please know that it's not personal at all ,but when the thread begins to get derailed by having debates about specific things that often aren't really contributing to the thread's organic growth then i have to become the moderator (job that I don't want).

This Saturday you will know from ME if the critical mass footers were snake oil or not with Boulder... It will be day 30 this Saturday so at this point it is sink or swim. I personally do not believe in going any longer than 30 days with any component. If you don’t like ANY COMPONENT within 30 days, guess what? David copperfield ain’t coming to make you magically like it. I strongly believe that if I don’t like something within the first hmmm 2-3 weeks, 99% chances that I won’t like it at any point of my ownership.
Only few components (can count in one hand maybe) have changed the way I feel about it after 2 weeks. My judgement is pretty darn good with this.
The truth will be told once I lift the massive boulders off the stand while my wife removes the footers and then I sit down and hear if things went backwards. Hell I might do a video of both presentations and let you all hear the difference but WITHOUT telling you which presentation is which.
I still feel as if I lost this intense imaging the boulder had when I first got them. This is now missing ever since I used the footers. My ears will tell me immediately what happens once I remove the footers.

@tjassoc

Transparent opus are $5800 for 2m and the boulder termination costs 170 dollars per cable so you’re looking at 5970x2.
Their power cords don’t need to be calibrated like their interconnects and speaker cables. They work on any component.
As far as the audio quest hurricane I have here, it would cost me like 250 per cable so 500 dollars total.
So we are essentially talking 12,000 dollars or 500 dollars... That said, the key here is if I want to try transparent opus for the first time or do I want to simply roll over the audio quest hurricanes with boulder.
Yes, I couldn’t use either one of these cables with any other amp I have here. Both companies can convert them down the road to 15a or 20a for the same prices I mentioned above (170 boulder and 250 audioquest).
I was thinking of sending my dragon powercords instead but the issue is that I need those for the mephisto or any other potential Amplifiers down the road. Remember, the dragon are $9800 per 2m cable.
That’s what we are ALLLLLLLLLLLLLLL about to find out and if that’s the case then we have found one hell of a component.
What I can say is that the gold tunning bullets from synergistic research sound OMG with boulder. I am almost 100% sure (almost) that I won’t be trying more interconnects or speaker cables in a LOOOOOOONG time. The sound is outstanding.
However, next week, Nordost odin speaker cables will be coming back to me because I took them in as part of a deal I put together but I don’t expect them to stay here for the long haul ( I might hang on to them just so that I have a second set of speaker cables to mix things up with other amps) Wait, more amps?
Yep...wanna guess what amps are coming back for a second round in my room? Next week we will know!
Guesses...
Memphisto 👹 👹will battle soon... Very soon once again
There is also something else i was thinking about which was that MAYBE the footers are not really adding too much more than what the maxxum stands already are. Let's say that the stands added 15% improvement (again, this is hypothetical), the footers might only be adding 1% or less. However, maybe if i had the boulders on a regular wood stand and i added the footers then i would easily hear the benefits of the footers?
Joe said that adding the footers on his stands would be incremental improvements, but MAYBE there really isnt that much of an improvement if you already own one of his best stands?
This weekend we will know... I don't quite believe in having to do square root of 5 time 36 divided by 3 in order to find the exact location of where the footers should go especially when Joe himself doesn't even say that to me. It's simple, lift the amp, place the footers and make sure they are seated under the amp and not the feet. The end...
Keep in mind, my trial involves Boulder 2150. I am under the belief that I am probably the only boulder 2150 owner who CURRENTLY posts on any forum. I am also extremely clear that our mind loves to play tricks on us. If you stare at a white wall for 30 days hoping it will turn black then guess what? If you stare at it long enough you will see it turn black... The power of delusion is a thing...

That said, we will need to wait until this weekend to see what ends up happening. The only thing I’ll tell you all right now is that I’m not going to be waiting months for something to "sing". If something takes months to work, this man right here ain’t spending his money on it. I couldn’t even wait on the damn bus to go to school. If you all want to wait months for something to "sing" then that’s cool (it’s your money).
I also couldn’t order a car and wait 2 years to take delivery because by the time I take delivery of it, I have probably already read encyclopedias about it and I’m bored by the time I get it. The honeymoon phase left my veins by then.

When it comes to other forums and reading non stop what others are doing, I see it as a valuable resource when you are perhaps running into an issue or something isn’t working correctly etc. I used to read the avsforum a LOOOOOOONG time ago when I was into home theater and then I realized I was not enjoying anything anymore because I was always reading constant critiques or people who knit pick a lot about a component they own and I started to become the same. If I heard a "click " inside a component I would be like " oh crap I think it’s defective, I need to return it " and then I would get the replacement and I would be literally searching for that click again constantly day in day out. It just made me miserable and I didn’t enjoy it. That’s why I limit myself and I try to just do my thing in here and only read other forums when I am probably interested in a product that I am planning to bring or perhaps I want to know what cables someone has used with it etc. That’s it.

There are certainly some heavy hitters on what’s best forum. No question about it. I thought about posting over there and starting a new thread but I don’t have the time. I don’t really have the bandwidth to maintain two threads plus a YouTube channel. I haven’t posted a video lately because I’m taking a breather. It’s starting to get a little overwhelming and so I’ll just kinda pace myself a little more. I did a full year of videos 3 times a week so now I need to balance things better.
There is also the fact that I just don’t have much interest in many amps out there. The very few that remain such as the relentless, dartzeel 468s, Boulder 3050s, etc cost as much as a house AND they aren’t widely available. Most of those 3050s are in Asia and I don’t know a single person who owns the dartzeel other than Michael Fremer. These amps are as rare as big foot is which also makes them ridiculously expensive to buy even if they are used.
I mean I’ll still bring an amp here and there if I happen to strike up a deal but I can’t sit here and tell you that I am like ACTUALLY looking to bring anoother amp. I’ve pretty much accepted that the mephisto and boulder are on another planet and everything else I’ve heard or owned is below them both.
When it comes to amps, I'm pretty much 98% done. Sure there are many amps I can try but I'm only talking about amps I am interested in and not those obscure brands.
It will be a few years before I see an amp that I really want to bring in here.
I’m glad you still love your luxman gear. Those components will go down in history as one of the best ever built.
If I had to downsize and needed to build a good system for a lot less money than what mine currently is, I’d do this:
Revel salon 2
Luxman monos/simaudio 860
Arc ref10
Dcs Bartok
Wireworld platinum or gold series 7 cables throughout

That system would put a world of hurting on far more expensive systems.

Let's move on and get things on track shallow we?

Today at 1130am ET, I will go over what is not so good about the Wilson Audio Alexandria XLF which will include one interesting fact that I have never disclosed before. Don't miss it!

I can’t share the verdict yet...you’ll need to watch the next upcoming video where I will play the system with and without footers BUT nobody will know what is playing... That is KEY because a lot of people would be biased If they knew which presentation has the footers. Let your ears decide... Yes I have my verdict and I will be releasing my thoughts AFTER you all listen to both presentations first.
Thank you for the feedback. You'll get my impressions on a future video.
Keep your feedback coming !
Boulder footers were removed last night and then I began to listen. The change was EASILY HEARD and I was shocked. Did things get better or worse after removing the footers?
You will soon find out.
Has anyone ever wondered the level of transparency that my current system must have?
Think about it, you all are able to hear a footer change through youtube...that’s how ridiculously transparent the boulder gear is. That’s one of the most fantastic things about it. We have criticized youtube for compressing things and not really allowing us to hear everything and yet we can hear footers?
If you could only be here to listen and analyze things in person, I think you’d be shocked.
I'm happy you all can hear footers changes through youtube. That's pretty awesome 😎

Interesting results on the poll I posted today. So far, presentation 2 is leading! Whoaaa

My thoughts to come very soon!
Get ready for my raw, honest, unbiased opinion!
I already heard opus here... There is alot that I do here behind closed doors that I can’t share... Some dealers loan me stuff under the condition I don't post anything on my channel and so I have to respect that.
Poll votes so far:
Presentation 1 - 33%
Presentation 2 - 67%

Isn't that something else ?
Coming soon... My raw opinion is coming tomorrow... I want more people to vote as well... That said, this is the reason WHY I use polls so that you all can actually see WHERE your ears are compared to the rest.
I always urge you all to listen more than once and hopefully on different days. Yes, if you try to listen on different days you might be shocked.
This quarantine taught me to be more patient than ever.
I plan to do a live chat later today after I’m done with work. That’s where you all will see the amplifier that has made a come back!

The criteria for this new speaker:

  1. Must have detail at low volumes
  2. Over 90db efficiency
  3. No powered woofers
  4. Medium sized (no more then 60 inches tall)
  5. Under 100k MSRP
  6. Full range (as close to 20hz as possible)
  7. Needs to be a mainstream brand that can easily be heard at one of your local dealer
isn’t that something? "What the eyes see, your mind believes"... has anyone heard this before or something like it? i believe this is a quote from the movie "swordfish" with John Travolta... The power of delusion is real..

Gotta love the Boulder monos... they don’t have an ounce of dishonesty. The more i play with them, the better i can summarize my own journey through the many amplifiers i have owned. No wonder why they only replace their amps every 15-17 years. I am very very excited to receive my custom-made transparent opus Gen 5 powercords next week. I was told yesterday by Transparent that i will have 95% of the performance with only
a 48 hour break-in time and only miniscule improvements through the 200 hour mark. Now, THAT IS MUSIC to my ears.

If these powercords are something special, i will know after 2 days of use. What is scary is how much better the 2150s could become with these powercords which should make the gap in performance between these amps and rest i have owned just brutal and too massive for any amp to close it. Now, if i could only get my hands on that Boudler 2120 dac... ugh.. i have been looking for that thing so badly and no luck!

@daveyf

I agree with the pain associated with big speakers. It can be too much at times but the presentations are larder than life!

@logydoghan

Could be many different reasons why this was the case. One could be that the Alexx is probably better suited for my room in terms of the size.
