My Long List of Amplifiers and My Personal Review of Each!

So I have been in a long journey looking to find the best amplifiers for my martin logan montis. As you know, the match between an amplifier and speakers has to be a good "marriage" and needs to be blend exquisitely. Right now, I think I might have found the best sounding amplifier for martin logan. I have gone through approximately 34-36 amplifiers in the past 12 months. Some of these are:

Bryston ST, SST, SST2 series
NAD M25
PARASOUND HALO
PARASOUND CLASSIC
KRELL TAS
KRELL KAV 500
KRELL CHORUS
ROTEL RMB 1095
CLASSE CT 5300
CLASSE CA 2200
CLASSE CA 5200
MCINTOSH MC 205
CARY AUDIO CINEMA 7
OUTLAW AUDIO 755
LEXICON RX7
PASS LABS XA 30.8
BUTLER AUDIO 5150
ATI SIGNATURE SERIES 6005

With all that said, the amplifiers I mentioned above are the ones that in my opinion are worth mentioning. To make a long story short, there is NO 5 CHANNEL POWER AMP that sounds as good as a 3ch and 2ch amplifier combination. i have done both experiments and the truth is that YOU DO lose details and more channel separation, etc when you select a 5 channel power amplifier of any manufacturer.
My recollection of what each amp sounded like is as follows:

ATI SIGNATURE SERIES 6005 (great power and amazing soundstage. Very low noise floor, BUT this amplifiers NEEDS TO BE cranked up in order to fully enjoy it. If you like listening at low volume levels or somewhat moderate, you are wasting your time here. This amp won’t sound any different than many other brands out there at this volume. The bass is great, good highs although they are a bit bright for my taste)

NAD M25 (very smooth, powerful, but somewhat thin sounding as far as bass goes)
Bryston sst2(detailed, good soundstage, good power, but can be a little forward with certain speakers which could make them ear fatiguing at loud volumes)

Krell (fast sounding, nice bass attack, nice highs, but some detail does get lost with certain speakers)

rotel (good amp for the money, but too bright in my opinion)

cary audio (good sound overall, very musical, but it didn’t have enough oomph)

parasound halo (good detail, great bass, but it still holds back some background detail that i can hear in others)

lexicon (very laid back and smooth. huge power, but if you like more detail or crisper highs, this amp will disappoint you)

McIntosh mc205 (probably the worst multichannel amp given its price point. it was too thin sounding, had detail but lacked bass.

butler audio (good amplifier. very warm and smooth sweet sounding. i think for the money, this is a better amp than the parasound a51)

pass labs (very VERY musical with excellent bass control. You can listen to this for hours and hours without getting ear fatigue. however, it DOES NOT do well in home theater applications if all you have is a 2 channel set up for movies. The midrange gets somewhat "muddy" or very weak sounding that you find yourself trying to turn it up.

classe audio (best amplifier for multi channel applications. i simply COULDNT FIND a better multi channel amplifier PERIOD. IT has amazing smoothness, amazing power and good bass control although i would say krell has much better bass control)

Update: The reviews above were done in January 2015. Below is my newest update as of October 2016:

PS AUDIO BHK 300 MONOBLOCKS: Amazing amps. Tons of detail and really amazing midrange. the bass is amazing too, but the one thing i will say is that those of you with speakers efficiency of 87db and below you will not have all the "loudness" that you may want from time to time. These amps go into protection mode when using a speaker such as the Salon, but only at very loud levels. Maybe 97db and above. If you don’t listen to extreme crazy levels, these amps will please you in every way.

Plinius Odeon 7 channel amp: This is THE BEST multichannel amp i have ever owned. Far , but FAR SUPERIOR to any other multichannel amp i have owned. In my opinion it destroyed all of the multichannel amps i mentioned above and below. The Odeon is an amp that is in a different tier group and it is in a league of its own. Amazing bass, treble and it made my center channel sound more articulate than ever before. The voices where never scrambled with the action scenes. It just separated everything very nicely.

Theta Dreadnaught D: Good detailed amp. Looks very elegant, has a pleasant sound, but i found it a tad too bright for my taste. I thought it was also somewhat "thin" sounding lacking body to the music. could be that it is because it is class d?

Krell Duo 300: Good amp. Nice and detailed with enough power to handle most speakers out there. I found that it does have a very nice "3d" sound through my electrostatics. Nothing to fault here on this amp.
Mark Levinson 532H: Great 2 channel amp. Lots of detail, amazing midrange which is what Mark Levinson is known for. It sounds very holographic and will please those of you looking for more detail and a better midrange. As far as bass, it is there, but it is not going to give you the slam of a pass labs 350.5 or JC1s for example. It is great for those that appreciate classical music, instrumental, etc, but not those of you who love tons of deep bass.

 It is articulate sounding too
Krell 7200: Plenty of detail and enough power for most people. i found that my rear speakers contained more information after installed this amp. One thing that i hated is that you must use xlr cables with this amp or else you lose most of its sound performance when using RCA’s.

Krell 402e: Great amp. Very powerful and will handle any speaker you wish. Power is incredible and with great detail. That said, i didn’t get all the bass that most reviewers mentioned. I thought it was "ok" in regards to bass. It was there, but it didn’t slam me to my listening chair.

Bryston 4B3: Good amp with a complete sound. I think this amp is more laid back than the SST2 version. I think those of you who found the SST2 version of this amp a little too forward with your speakers will definitely benefit from this amp’s warmth. Bryston has gone towards the "warm" side in my opinion with their new SST3 series. As always, they are built like tanks. I wouldn’t call this amp tube-like, but rather closer to what the classe audio delta 2 series sound like which is on the warm side of things.

Parasound JC1s: Good powerful amps. Amazing low end punch (far superior bass than the 402e). This amp is the amp that i consider complete from top to bottom in regards to sound. Nothing is lacking other than perhaps a nicer chassis. Parasound needs to rework their external appearance when they introduce new amps. This amp would sell much more if it had a revised external appearance because the sound is a great bang for the money. It made my 800 Nautilus scream and slam. Again, amazing low end punch.

Simaudio W7: Good detailed amp. This amp reminds me a lot of the Mark Levinson 532h. Great detail and very articulate. I think this amp will go well with bookshelves that are ported in order to compensate for what it lacks when it comes to the bass. That doesn’t mean it has no bass, but when it is no Parasound JC1 either.
Pass labs 350.5: Wow, where do i begin? maybe my first time around with the xa30.8 wasn’t as special as it was with this monster 350.5. It is just SPECTACULAR sounding with my electrostatics. The bass was THE BEST BASS i have ever heard from ANY amp period. The only amp that comes close would be the jC1s. It made me check my settings to make sure the bass was not boosted and kept making my jaw drop each time i heard it. It totally destroyed the krell 402e in every regard. The krell sounded too "flat" when compared to this amp. This amp had amazing mirange with great detail up top. In my opinion, this amp is the best bang for the money. i loved this amp so much that i ended up buying the amp that follows below.

Pass labs 250.8: What can i say here. This is THE BEST STEREO AMP i have ever heard. This amp destroys all the amps i have listed above today to include the pass labs 350.5. It is a refined 350.5 amp. It has more 3d sound which is something the 350.5 lacked. It has a level of detail that i really have never experienced before and the bass was amazing as well. I really thought it was the most complete power amplifier i have ever heard HANDS DOWN. To me, this is a benchmark of an amplifier. This is the amp that others should be judged by. NOTHING is lacking and right now it is the #1 amplifier that i have ever owned.

My current amps are Mcintosh MC601s: i decided to give these 601s a try and they don’t disappoint. They have great detail, HUGE soundstage, MASSIVE power and great midrange/highs. The bass is great, but it is no pass labs 250.8 or 350.5. As far as looks, these are the best looking amps i have ever owned. No contest there. i gotta be honest with you all, i never bought mcintosh monos before because i wasn’t really "wowed" by the mc452, but it could have been also because at that time i was using a processor as a preamp which i no longer do. Today, i own the Mcintosh C1100 2 chassis tube preamp which sounds unbelievable. All the amps i just described above have been amps that i auditioned with the C1100 as a preamp. The MC601s sound great without a doubt, but i will say that if you are looking for THE BEST sound for the money, these would not be it. However, Mcintosh remains UNMATCHED when it comes to looks and also resale value. Every other amp above depreciates much faster than Mcintosh.

That said, my future purchase (when i can find a steal of a deal) will be the Pass labs 350.8. I am tempted to make a preliminary statement which is that i feel this amp could be THE BEST stereo amp under 30k dollars. Again, i will be able to say more and confirm once i own it. I hope this update can help you all in your buying decisions!

All in due time. My opinion will come at some point this month.
Too early to compare both right now.

@chayro

You make great points and i agree i am planning to build around the Mephisto. However, if you build around the mephisto which in my opinion is the most neutral amp i have owned, chances are that whatever partnering gear you chose will probably sound awesome with many other amps I bring home (at least 9 times out of 10).

Also, dont forget i mentioned that the simaudio is also not sounding great with this outlet so that gives me a second data point. Look, if i end up hating the furutech outlets then i have no issues removing them and selling them, but i have to give them at least 500 hours. I am NOT waiting longer than that. If at 500 hours they havent come back around then they are exiting my room and i will finish the job with Shunyata outlets.

Simple valid reasons:
1. Everytine i switch Amplifiers, i need to send the cables to transparent so they can calibrate them or tune them for the new Amplifier

2. Transparent does not accept cables from the end user. You must go through an authorized dealer

3. Jay buys transparent from the used market. No transparent dealer will send Jay’s cables unless I pay something to the dealer for doing the favor. This means jay has to be paying dealers every month to send cables in because of the amount of Amplifiers he goes through.

4. It takes about 2-3 weeks to get cables calibrated.

5. Gryphon advised against using any Speaker Cable that has any sort of network box in the middle.

6. Opus cables msrp is around $40k. If jay doesn’t like that cable better than his current cables, who buys the cable from jay ? Transparent isn’t as desired as nordost or others because of all the reasons above.

7. No dealer has any opus cables they can loan jay.

8. If the goal is to keep trying amps, i don’t see how transparent cables fit my needs?

9. Transparent is for the person that wants to just stay with one amp for a very long time. I can not see myself sticking to one amp only because I can’t switch cables
It comes with the jack but i have thick carpet. The jack doesn't work quite well with this kind of carpet. It's not a big jack - it has tiny wheels...
Right now I’ve had the SR Interconnects and speaker cables settling in the system for 24 hours.
I have my preliminary opinion but I think it is not valid yet. I need to spend more time listening.
I was told I can keep the cables the entire month so I don’t need to rush. I also want to hear his the cables sound with the boulder and with Mephisto.
I was told that Peter Mcgrath won’t be coming because he is staying quarantined in his house. That said, i was told he will be part of the set up on video so we shall see.
That said, i want you all to understand that after I have the speakers set up, i won’t be playing with more speakers for quite sometime because I can’t remove the spikes of my Alexx on my own (452 lbs) in order to put the casters on and move them out of the way.

I have a ton of synergistic research here so it is a bit overwhelming.
Here is my plan:
1. Insert speaker cables for 24 hours and Listen
2. Add xlr for 24 hours and listen
3. Add powercord for 24 hours and listen
4. Add grounding block and listen.

Remove all the above and reinstall all cables I removed and let them play for 24hrs before i listen. I should be able to compare at this point.

The above will be done with gryphon and boulder systems.

If you all think there is a better way of doing this evaluation of SR, please let me hear it. Im open to guidance/opinions. Just remember to please keep the testing as straight forward as possible and avoid getting all confused with all the tuning fuses etc.
Let’s do this together and find out what synergistic research is all about?

Noted. I failed to articulate what i said which was that yes, i seem to be the only person who has gone public about my particular combination. If there are others who have it, well we can’t find them or see them so they don’t really count?
Can you say UFOs exist if you haven't seen them? That's my point...
When you do a calculation, your denominator is important but this particular number is based on things you can count...not those that you imagine exist?

Lol. Interesting article. Is it April’s fool’s day?
I appreciate people writing articles that directly tie with my current setup lol.... I can’t wait to put this link on my next video for all my subscribers to see.

Someone ACTUALLY wrote an article about my current rig... Guys, you all gotta read the article above PLEASE!
I actually like the humor behind it.
Thanks to whoever took the time to write this. That was cool :-)

Ps: check out the "recommend accessories" page on the link. The triangle made out of cardboard had me LMAO
Ric,
My apologies to you and did not mean to belittle your passion for tweaking, but to say to folks here that they can get mephisto AND Alexx sound for 15k is a little bit out there don’t you think?
That’s quite a bold statement... But who am I to negate your efforts?
I am a nobody (yes I mean it)
However, what if said say to others that I know how to get 90% of the sound i have here for 50% of the price?? Then I could easily embark on saying to folks:
" I know how to get my sound for 1/3 of the price. Care to find out how? Please pay me so I can tell you how to" (clearly this is puting it bluntly) but i can't do that. I know that's not possible to do.

My question to you is this though:
HOW do you know your approach can best what I have ? Have you actually heard an Alexx with the same front end as mine? If you haven’t then it’s kinda hard to tell others you know how to beat it ..
As far as I know, i am THE ONLY person who has Mephisto , Boulder 2110 and Alexx together. I have looked all over the place trying to find if someone has this same combo and i don’t see anyone?
Question: will your approach also best the boulder 2150 monos??
I like your passion for tweaking and maybe if you lived near me i would totally let you come into my room and do your magic with whatever you feel will improve my experience.

Yes I 200% agree you were the person who pretty much got me to buy cable lifters and stands, but fuse swaps in electronics such as Mephistos, boulder etc is really something I don’t want to do because the warranty is voided on products and yes manufacturers watch me.
Let’s keep in mind, the boulders and Mephistos of the world wouldn’t be built if there was no need for them.
The reality is that there has to be product and options for everyone.
Not everyone likes horns (i don’t think I do) and even the big focal grandes are hard to drive. They showcase them with monster Naim monos so what’s that tell you?
Speakers are built for everyone’s preferences and so are amps.
I agree that the Mephisto or boulder isn’t for everyone and to be honest, i don’t think they are built to be bought by the masses. Gryphon and Boulder know that there won’t be many people with these amps.
Dartzeel 468, 458 and relentless monos aren’t any different. They are built for the insane speaker owners out there. If they didn’t sell then they wouldn’t be building them.
I will say one thing though: i have noticed a TON of people are super critical of the ultra high end. It's been an eye opener for me.

Synergistic research....hmmm is it really all that??? I have a strong preliminary feeling after letting things settle for almost 3 days....
Will I break hearts? You will soon know...
Video being uploaded.
Round 2:
Alexx with full synergistic research

Please note: this is the first round with Alexx and synergistic research.
We don’t really have points of reference with the Alexx so you can’t go back to comparing to the Alexia or DAW. You MUST compare Alexx to Alexx BUT you won’t be able to have that opportunity until next time I do another Alex video with my cables and playing the same songs found in the video that is getting uploaded right now.
It is the Holidays which impacts my bandwidth PLUS i am evaluating the Synergistic Research which takes days because cables need to settle in....... I am also tired of pumping out music videos all the time...these videos leave me with zero financial incentive (copyrights owners make the money, not me).  I need to stop doing videos of music non-stop as i did over the past few weeks. If i do 3-4 videos a week then i need to split them. Remember, if all i do  are music videos then those are satisfaction for you all, but they do nothing for me financially (youtube pretty much thanks me for doing work and them not paying me).
If you look at other channels, have you all not noticed most of them just talk talk talk talk talk talk talk talk talk talk talk talk talk talk talk talk talk MORE talk??
There is a reason...they get paid with these videos... and I need me some of that as well so i need to find the perfect balance when it comes to videos.
actually some people want my opinions more than the videos because they feel like videos are just too flawed so they rather get my opinion since i am the only person who sits here in the room. Too tough to tell which gets the most subscribers. That said, even if i had 1 zillion subscribers and all i did were music videos, i'd still make more money by going to a gas station to pick up all the pennies i find on the floor..

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. For now,

The system is not great but I'll use this time to create content that many of you want such as  stuff I've owned  and that I haven't gotten around to reviewing.

The mind is the one component that we can’t change. I also go through this same problem as you.
That's why it's important to live with some of this stuff so that once you make your decision then you don't regret it because you had enough time to decide.
I know some might not take into account youtube comments, but i think that they should at least be read. It you feel one way and you see that the YouTube comments are the opposite of what you feel for the most part then that should make you scratch your head and perhaps bust out headphones or something else to hear the presentation.
I’ll circle back to the Alexx and my cabling in a future video. Maybe i will try the same system but use my speaker cables and leave the rest of the synergistic research stuff in place.
Harder to pick apart things when you are walking at the top of the mountain. Everything is harder and i must say it also gets more confusing. There are moments where I feel i hands down prefer the synergistic research and then the next morning my ears tell me the audioquest dragon is superior... It’s a constant back and forth where it isn't easy to pick a winning combination.
The SR is not new. It’s used and it has been in the system for days now.
The dragon speaker cables are 22k for 2m... So we are not exactly comparing best buy audioquest here against SR. People need to understand that the comparison here is not a "cheap" cable vs SR.
Don’t think or assume that you can buy the cheaper audioquest cables and beat the SR. That is being dillusional and not really rational.
Remember, this is audioquests best speaker cable which has been said it bests my previous odin 1 speaker cables.
Here’s a review in case you are curious about this audioquest Dragon speaker cable:

http://www.audiodrom.net/en/speaker-cables/detail/37-speaker-cables/679-audioquest-dragon-zero--bass...

Ps: wilson informed me they have a customer with WAMM who uses full audioquest Dragon cables throughout his system...
I'm not quite sure to be honest. The speaker cables are the galileo mode which is their top model.
Well we can insert the dragon aq and remove just the SR speaker cables to see what it does ....
Yes when you are comparing components that aren’t top notch then yes... But in this case both are great cables so the differences become harder to separate because it now becomes more about preferences..
Coming up in a few:
Round 2:  gryphon vip xlr and audioquest dragon speaker cables are added and synergistic xlr and speaker cable removed. Will it be better?? Wait for the video today...
Sorry guys but i think you all should know that I can't make everyone happy with recordings. If i play what you like then I get others pissed off and viceversa. I will keep playing songs I've used throughout my journey so you can all go back and compare to my old videos.

My room is treated and has thick carpet throughout... I have acoustic panels in ever single wall of my room. You might be hearing the direction in which i had the mic pointed when i spoke.

Anyhow, i will be doing a Gryphon Pandora test with SR and Audioquest as well. This way we can see how things go with the matching linestage.

It is VERY VERY important to make sure components are matching at this stage. I can’t stress that enough. I have gotten away with murder in the past, but the Alexx are now telling me "not so much anymore buddy" so i am not forced to be as careful as possible.
Expect 2 more videos which will include the Pandora Linestage and we will circle back at the end for a discussion. My thoughts will come at the end of all the cable swaps and shootouts.
Boulder 2150s have shipped and are in route to me. I will introduce them to you all as soon as they arrive, but i won’t be doing any Boulder vs Gryphon until Christmas week. That is the perfect time in order to gain more traction since most people will be off and on vacation therefore more views/subscribers. I want to do a 3 part series of the Boulder Vs Mephisto and my favorite will stay while the other will pack its bags and move out of my house in late January/early February.
i liked that speaker a lot. They don't have the slam of the Wilson, but they have incredible mids and a huge soundstage. I really contemplated buying that speaker when i heard it.

I won’t argue with people who use DAC direct because they know their system and I don’t. What I will say is I would NOT trade the extra 2% detail that a DAC will give you by going direct for benefits such as more control, more soundstage, more drive, etc etc.

Today we have reached 3,000 subscribers and i would like to thank all of you for staying along my side.
If i have ever offended anyone, please know I hold zero grudges against anyone. My emotions sometimes get the best of me but that is only because I am very passionate about what i do just like you are about your own passions in life.
I expect great things in 2021 and more raw opinions about ultra high end. I hope to meet some of you in person next time we are able to attend a show.
For only having 3,000 subs, I'm shocked at the amount of people that are aware of my channel and the impact it is having. It begs the question, how much more impact will it have once I reach 30k, 60k subs?
The sky is the limit but i plan to reach that limit with you all.

Jay

Gryphon Pandora has been added and the boulder 2110 preamp removed. Here are the results:

https://youtu.be/mIx2SHmIXds

(Please watch the video until the end to find out what specific changes took place)

Tomorrow, at noon Eastern time, you will find out which component leaves Jay's Audio Lab...

You can’t tell someone how much fun a hellcat is to drive if their only point of reference is a honda civic.
I can’t convince someone that gryphon or boulder are awesome amps if  their point of reference is Bryston, nad etc. The journey is what gets you to appreciate the higher end offerings. You have to "graduate" your ears slowly as you go up the ladder.
If i brought a person here who has only had rotel for amplifier and showed them my Gryphon or boulder they would only be amazed at the huge size of the product but they don't really quite grasp the level of gear that it is. It's like me, if i was told to drink a glass of wine that costs 40k for a bottle, my mind wouldn't quite understand what to look for when it comes to the flavor and taste of the wine because my point of reference are $20 dollar bottles...

@grey9hound
I couldn't have said it better myself.
By the way, the next surprise i will be unveiling will be something you will hopefully like. Stay tuned ...
There is no unique way to compare. Cant do a thing about the power discrepancy. It is what it is. We are strictly trying to hear the tonality and overall sonic characteristics. We are not racing both amps. It won't be a decibel contest. Mephisto is cruising at the volume levels i plan to compare both amps. In case you forgot, the Mephisto is dual mono design. It has 2 Powercords and each channel is a mirror image of the other.
Again, there is not much to do other than to make sure they are on stands (hopefully) and at exactly the same volume and both using the same cables. I can only control what i can and their corresponding wattages isn't something I have control over.
Final Video:
Gryphon with Synergistic Research:
Who do you prefer? Synergistic Research or Audioquest??
Let me hear your thoughts!

https://youtu.be/x1FiMCAMLpc
thanks for this Kren. I tried to keep things as consistent as possible and purposely did 4 videos for you all to try to go back and forth and listen critically.
I am glad that you COULD TELL a difference in cable changes with each preamp because that means my microphone is at least capturing things.

Anyone else would like to chime in and give their input?

Ps: Boulder monos are now sitting on Critical Mass MAXXUM stands.

Well, gryphon has done it again... Finally a serious linestage. It’s time for me to save my money...just when I thought I was done with Gryphon.

I think this new amp is the bigger essence amp I've been talking about and if it is, oh boy...that is going to serious...

Oh wow this stuff is too much money...

The Apex stereo amp is $120k...$240k for monos..

Wow. That’s nuts. The stereo amp costs the same as Mephisto monos!!!

The new gryphon Apex amp can't detect a speaker load which oretty much means it completely assaults all speakers connected to it. Weight of the stereo amp is...440 lbs
