My Long List of Amplifiers and My Personal Review of Each!

So I have been in a long journey looking to find the best amplifiers for my martin logan montis. As you know, the match between an amplifier and speakers has to be a good "marriage" and needs to be blend exquisitely. Right now, I think I might have found the best sounding amplifier for martin logan. I have gone through approximately 34-36 amplifiers in the past 12 months. Some of these are:

Bryston ST, SST, SST2 series
NAD M25
PARASOUND HALO
PARASOUND CLASSIC
KRELL TAS
KRELL KAV 500
KRELL CHORUS
ROTEL RMB 1095
CLASSE CT 5300
CLASSE CA 2200
CLASSE CA 5200
MCINTOSH MC 205
CARY AUDIO CINEMA 7
OUTLAW AUDIO 755
LEXICON RX7
PASS LABS XA 30.8
BUTLER AUDIO 5150
ATI SIGNATURE SERIES 6005

With all that said, the amplifiers I mentioned above are the ones that in my opinion are worth mentioning. To make a long story short, there is NO 5 CHANNEL POWER AMP that sounds as good as a 3ch and 2ch amplifier combination. i have done both experiments and the truth is that YOU DO lose details and more channel separation,etc when you select a 5 channel power amplifier of any manufacturer.
My recollection of what each amp sounded like is as follows:

ATI SIGNATURE SERIES 6005 (great power and amazing soundstage. Very low noise floor, BUT this amplifiers NEEDS TO BE cranked up in order to fully enjoy it. If you like listening at low volume levels or somewhat moderate, you are wasting your time here. This amp won’t sound any different than many other brands out there at this volume. The bass is great, good highs although they are a bit bright for my taste)

NAD M25 (very smooth, powerful, but somewhat thin sounding as far as bass goes)
Bryston sst2(detailed, good soundstage, good power, but can be a little forward with certain speakers which could make them ear fatiguing at loud volumes)

Krell (fast sounding, nice bass attack, nice highs, but some detail does get lost with certain speakers)

rotel (good amp for the money, but too bright in my opinion)

cary audio (good sound overall, very musical, but it didn’t have enough oomph)

parasound halo (good detail, great bass, but it still holds back some background detail that i can hear in others)

lexicon (very laid back and smooth. huge power, but if you like more detail or crisper highs, this amp will disappoint you)

McIntosh mc205 (probably the worst multichannel amp given its price point. it was too thin sounding, had detail but lacked bass.

butler audio (good amplifier. very warm and smooth sweet sounding. i think for the money, this is a better amp than the parasound a51)

pass labs (very VERY musical with excellent bass control. You can listen to this for hours and hours without getting ear fatigue. however, it DOES NOT do well in home theater applications if all you have is a 2 channel set up for movies. The midrange gets somewhat "muddy" or very weak sounding that you find yourself trying to turn it up.

classe audio (best amplifier for multi channel applications. i simply COULDNT FIND a better multi channel amplifier PERIOD. IT has amazing smoothness, amazing power and good bass control although i would say krell has much better bass control)

Update: The reviews above were done in January 2015. Below is my newest update as of October 2016:

PS AUDIO BHK 300 MONOBLOCKS: Amazing amps. Tons of detail and really amazing midrange. the bass is amazing too, but the one thing i will say is that those of you with speakers efficiency of 87db and below you will not have all the "loudness" that you may want from time to time. These amps go into protection mode when using a speaker such as the Salon, but only at very loud levels. Maybe 97db and above. If you don’t listen to extreme crazy levels, these amps will please you in every way.

Plinius Odeon 7 channel amp: This is THE BEST multichannel amp i have ever owned. Far , but FAR SUPERIOR to any other multichannel amp i have owned. In my opinion it destroyed all of the multichannel amps i mentioned above and below. The Odeon is an amp that is in a different tier group and it is in a league of its own. Amazing bass, treble and it made my center channel sound more articulate than ever before. The voices where never scrambled with the action scenes. It just separated everything very nicely.

Theta Dreadnaught D: Good detailed amp. Looks very elegant, has a pleasant sound, but i found it a tad too bright for my taste. I thought it was also somewhat "thin" sounding lacking body to the music. could be that it is because it is class d?

Krell Duo 300: Good amp. Nice and detailed with enough power to handle most speakers out there. I found that it does have a very nice "3d" sound through my electrostatics. Nothing to fault here on this amp.
Mark Levinson 532H: Great 2 channel amp. Lots of detail, amazing midrange which is what Mark Levinson is known for. It sounds very holographic and will please those of you looking for more detail and a better midrange. As far as bass, it is there, but it is not going to give you the slam of a pass labs 350.5 or JC1s for example. It is great for those that appreciate classical music, instrumental, etc, but not those of you who love tons of deep bass.

 It is articulate sounding too
Krell 7200: Plenty of detail and enough power for most people. i found that my rear speakers contained more information after installed this amp. One thing that i hated is that you must use xlr cables with this amp or else you lose most of its sound performance when using RCA’s.

Krell 402e: Great amp. Very powerful and will handle any speaker you wish. Power is incredible and with great detail. That said, i didn’t get all the bass that most reviewers mentioned. I thought it was "ok" in regards to bass. It was there, but it didn’t slam me to my listening chair.

Bryston 4B3: Good amp with a complete sound. I think this amp is more laid back than the SST2 version. I think those of you who found the SST2 version of this amp a little too forward with your speakers will definitely benefit from this amp’s warmth. Bryston has gone towards the "warm" side in my opinion with their new SST3 series. As always, they are built like tanks. I wouldn’t call this amp tube-like, but rather closer to what the classe audio delta 2 series sound like which is on the warm side of things.

Parasound JC1s: Good powerful amps. Amazing low end punch (far superior bass than the 402e). This amp is the amp that i consider complete from top to bottom in regards to sound. Nothing is lacking other than perhaps a nicer chassis. Parasound needs to rework their external appearance when they introduce new amps. This amp would sell much more if it had a revised external appearance because the sound is a great bang for the money. It made my 800 Nautilus scream and slam. Again, amazing low end punch.

Simaudio W7: Good detailed amp. This amp reminds me a lot of the Mark Levinson 532h. Great detail and very articulate. I think this amp will go well with bookshelves that are ported in order to compensate for what it lacks when it comes to the bass. That doesn’t mean it has no bass, but when it is no Parasound JC1 either.
Pass labs 350.5: Wow, where do i begin? maybe my first time around with the xa30.8 wasn’t as special as it was with this monster 350.5. It is just SPECTACULAR sounding with my electrostatics. The bass was THE BEST BASS i have ever heard from ANY amp period. The only amp that comes close would be the jC1s. It made me check my settings to make sure the bass was not boosted and kept making my jaw drop each time i heard it. It totally destroyed the krell 402e in every regard. The krell sounded too "flat" when compared to this amp. This amp had amazing mirange with great detail up top. In my opinion, this amp is the best bang for the money. i loved this amp so much that i ended up buying the amp that follows below.

Pass labs 250.8: What can i say here. This is THE BEST STEREO AMP i have ever heard. This amp destroys all the amps i have listed above today to include the pass labs 350.5. It is a refined 350.5 amp. It has more 3d sound which is something the 350.5 lacked. It has a level of detail that i really have never experienced before and the bass was amazing as well. I really thought it was the most complete power amplifier i have ever heard HANDS DOWN. To me, this is a benchmark of an amplifier. This is the amp that others should be judged by. NOTHING is lacking and right now it is the #1 amplifier that i have ever owned.

My current amps are Mcintosh MC601s: i decided to give these 601s a try and they don’t disappoint. They have great detail, HUGE soundstage, MASSIVE power and great midrange/highs. The bass is great, but it is no pass labs 250.8 or 350.5. As far as looks, these are the best looking amps i have ever owned. No contest there. i gotta be honest with you all, i never bought mcintosh monos before because i wasn’t really "wowed" by the mc452, but it could have been also because at that time i was using a processor as a preamp which i no longer do. Today, i own the Mcintosh C1100 2 chassis tube preamp which sounds unbelievable. All the amps i just described above have been amps that i auditioned with the C1100 as a preamp. The MC601s sound great without a doubt, but i will say that if you are looking for THE BEST sound for the money, these would not be it. However, Mcintosh remains UNMATCHED when it comes to looks and also resale value. Every other amp above depreciates much faster than Mcintosh.

That said, my future purchase (when i can find a steal of a deal) will be the Pass labs 350.8. I am tempted to make a preliminary statement which is that i feel this amp could be THE BEST stereo amp under 30k dollars. Again, i will be able to say more and confirm once i own it. I hope this update can help you all in your buying decisions!

i had Nordost throughout and i do not believe Magico needs this kind of cable.  I think audioquest dragon WOULD BE PERFECT for Magicos and Boulder should be outstanding as well.
I was just informed that Stereophile magazine has named the Magico M2 2020 speaker of the year. They said the competition was not even close.
It was Magico M2 and everyone else fighting for second place.
Pretty much a unanimous decision.
Last year’s speaker of the year was the Revel Performa F228Be.
That said, when i look at the list of speakers that they reviewed in 2020, i honestly do not see a speaker that could have beat it? i mean, maybe the Von Schweikert Audio Ultra 55? Göbel High End Divin Marquis?
I have had a few conversations with a few people in regards to the M2 vs M3. I have heard the M2s and they certainly do a disappearing act that reminded me a lot of the Vivid Audio does. However, is the M2 a better buy than a M3? They are 23k dollars apart (msrp) , but can one justify going from a M3 to M2? or buying a M2 over the M3?
Yes, there is talk about the construction of the M2 being like that of the M6 and the M3 is more like the MPro. However, can this be heard in a room with the same electronics on both speakers? Tough decision for me to be honest. The brief moment i had the M3’s here was special. Not once did i feel i needed subwoofers, but some say with the M2 you will need subs. This means you buy dual subs which now makes the m2 73k dollars. Tough call.

Lots of interesting thoughts.
For the time being, all i can say is that I am "Wilsoned out".  There is nothing under $100k msrp from Wilson that i am interested in. I've done my rounds with Wilson under $100k msrp.
This doesn't mean I can't show up with a random Wilson speaker but that is not on my mind. It would be more of the speaker chasing me than me chasing it.

2 new components are on the way. Due to popular demand, i was able to make something happen and i want to thank someone here in advance for facilitating this.
yes i moved it based on the diagram focal sent me. Remember, with focal you can add more mids (if that is what you wish for) by simply changing the jumpers and that is it.
This tweeter is simply on another level and i think most of you can go back between both videos and easily tell the difference. The tremendous amount of additional information this tweeter adds is on leagues ahead. You don't eve need headphones to tell a difference. I think even using your phone's built in speaker  - the clarity is noticeable.

Here is one good topic that should be discussed here. I want to know what you all think about the topic below??  This interview was just released a day ago.
Let me hear your thoughts!

https://youtu.be/EZgWnU2qy5s
Hi Derek
I haven't yet. I will give my opinion on them since I've owned them for a few months now. I plan to do a video on who should own this kind of speaker.

A full loom of cables that cost the same as a nordost powercord?

Listen to it!

@mrdecibel

You make interesting points but you also didn’t take into consideration that my thread has NEVER been about the music?

My entire journey has been about the equipment and their sonic attributes. The music or tracks I use are "tools" for me to evaluate these cables or electronics.

If I were simply looking to listen to music without a analyzing things then d’d bring out my full vac system and be done.

Solid state components are many times "measuring devices" utilized to see how good or bad a recording is. Tube gear is really a different path that doesn’t quite punish you for poor recordings.

I’m quite excited to hear my full vac system for the first time ever (yep, I haven’t heard my vac amp and preamp at all because the Mephisto have kept me busy analyzing things)

@speedbump:

You nailed it. I will be shocking people real soon.....you guys love my madness...am i lying here?
Next week will bring serious surprises. Big changes, new things and more reviews.
One thing I would like to discuss here is WHO BUYS ultra high end audio? Is it really audiophiles or luxury buyers?
Mike touched up on both types of clients. Who really owns the WAMMS, Focal Utopia Grande, Magico M9s etc? Is it really audiophiles or just people with insane money that just want to own statement components rather than the product itself?
One could argue that high rollers buy those ultra high end components so that they don’t have to wonder if there is something better. They go all out and bypass the "cheaper" stuff but do they really sit and listen to this kind of gear the way you and i would ?
Actually, think about it like this: HOW MANY OF YOU know of someone who owns the 3 speakers mentioned above and have actually seen them in person? I bet there won’t be many of us who know someone... I personally DO NOT know of anyone who owns that level of gear.  Hell, i don't personally know of anyone who owns focal Stella evo if I'm being honest.
Does the same hold truth for you all?
I’m curious to hear you all’s thoughts on this.

@carey1110
Good points. I just find it interesting how most of us have never really met an actual owner of ultra high end.
We see these systems at shows but WHO are the owners ? Where are they? Are they high profile people ?
It seems to me that this is the case with ultra high end gear.

@tjassoc
I have heard the chronosonic twice and i think the dealer had too much tube gear. It wasn’t jaw dropping BUT I can’t blame the gear. I am by no means a master of everything, but some dealers just don’t have a clue as to what maximizes system performance.

I agree with Ron and Carey.
It is us, right here, in this forum that keeps their businesses going. It's not the luxury buyers because they don't go changing out equipment  as often as we do.
It never ends and I think that there is an element of "equipment junkie" in all of us deep down or else we would not be replacing anything.

Boulder 2110 and Magnepan 20.7 video is getting uploaded. Should be live in about 40 min. Get ready.... Everything you thought you knew about both linestages might completely change. You will have front row tickets to the "synergy show" I’ve been displaying over the past few weeks.
I’ve been saying this over and over and over. You can’t compare a speaker of the caliber AND price of the Stella EVO to a speaker like the magnepan or anything close to its price. The price comes into play whether I want to accept it or not. Is it a coincidence that the best stereo amp I’ve owned and the best speakers I’ve owned plus the best dac I’ve owned happen to be the most expensive I’ve owned in their respective categories?
I don’t think so....
I just feel that panels require more work to tune them properly plus the huge amount of space. You got subs to place somewhere, then the huge panels, then trying to dial them in correctly and probably getting crossovers. It becomes too much "investment" outside of the price itself. This doesn't mean they don't sound incredible, but it's kinda like owning a Mazda rotary engine which is also incredible and can rev to 9,000 RPM but it needs to be taken apart and rebuilt completely after a certain mileage. I'm not sure I want to deal with the mandatory engine overhaul that these engines need.
My Magnepan 20.7 are now listed for sale. Four months of living with them has given me all the exposure i needed to understand this great speaker, but all good things come to an end. I plan to do a quick review of them at some point since some of you want my personal opinion on this speaker.
Noted. My problem is I’m not a tweaker and am I about to embark on modding any speaker besides the typical jumper or spike upgrade.
I don’t buy an Alexia 2 or Stella or mephisto to also embark on modding it.
I’m not sure I’ll ever do panels again. I have my own personal reasons which might not be the same for everyone else.
The only thing I can say is that my Stella evo convinced me that I don’t need huge panels for purity and clarity. It wiped that stupidity out of my head. I’m a big believer in beryllium tweeter. I’ll leave it at that.

I also decided to connect my simaudio 650d cd player straight into the boulder 2110 and play some cds and that was the biggest BIGGEST revelation ever. The 650d sounded broken when connected direct into the 2110 but when I connected it to my dcs ROSSINI using AES , it sounded as if someone remastered the recordings. I have to try to take a video of this for you all to hear it.
@stargazer3:
i echo your sentiments. If i am paying 70, 80, 100, 200k etc, etc and I STILL NEED to do MORE work on my end other than the typical set up, spikes, etc, then i am not interested. It could be my personality though. I don't have patience to be using aluminum foil on heatsinks, dimes under the spikes, quarters under equipment feet, or aluminum cans to get the cables off the floor. I am not that "intense" but i don't judge those that love to discover what else can be gained by doing those extra tweaks.
Don’t scratch off the m3....i know a thing or two that most don’t.... :)
M3 is easily EASILY better than the DAW...HUGE SOUND with more nuance...
Everyone and their mother has texted me, emailed me or messaged me about the m3s...what is going on guys lol
Is the wilson Alexx in the room already? Hmmm..... Wouldn't that be something else...
Kren-
I'm gonna fire you and block you from figuring out my moves. Might have to stay quiet on my next move.
Timing is key with what I do. Timing is what dictates my next move 9 times out of 10. I can't control timing but when it swings in my direction, i need to be ready for it. This is exactly what happened with my Stella. I wasn't prepared to sell them but i have to look at the bigger picture and keep focused. There is no such thing as being lucky. It is about being prepared when opportunity knocks on your door. The magico m3 could very well end up like the stellas did. I got bigger plans, bigger fish to fry but as I dive into deeper waters, i gotta be ready to swim.
So while the m3s are here, I'll try to pump out videos and give my opinion because tomorrow might never come.
Driving factors of MY PERSONAL CHOICES:

  1. Am i interested in the product?
  2. Do i have the right opportunity to buy it?
  3. Is it a brand that i can part ways with once i am done?
  4. If i can’t sell it, am i ok living with it ?
  5. Is it the right timing?

techno:

why are you sore with my choices? is it because i sold the focal? have you ever wondered if i might circle back to focal down the road just like i have done with the M3s YOU SPECIFICALLY asked me about a long time ago?
Nothing is impossible here. I can always circle back to product i did not spend enough time with.
Here is how my mind operates:
" jay is looking to buy a car next year for his wife and so in the meantime he saves money. He knows he wants to buy a car at a particular price point but his wife is not working right now so it makes sense to wait until she is back to work. However, someone knows someone who is selling the same exact car but needs the money right now due to Covid19 and so he offers it to Jay for substantially less money than Jay would pay next year after the pandemic. The result? Jay buys the car NOW by getting a loan at a low APR and forgets about next year"
This is how i remain on top... Some of you have to think, measure the room, the ceiling, talk to the skies, your dog, your aunt, your wife and that is all good - nothing wrong, but Jay does not have to do that. While you are deciding what to do, Jay is getting a Uhaul to go pick up the equipment. THIS IS EXACTLY how i keep driving forward.
My approach isn't for the faint of heart. It does take cojones, drive, determination and yes finances.
Looks like some people on my youtube channel loved the Linkin Park video. I was trying to have fun yesterday with the speakers so i decided to share it with you all.
This new set up is a ton of fun i must say.

On a different note, i have been getting some messages in regards to the equipment i have been presenting. Some are a little bitter/salty with the fact that i am for the most part only displaying the ultra-high end and not so much of the affordable products out there. I try to present every once in a while something affordable (not often, but think 20.7, 13a logans, dynaudio c4s, parasound, luxman, simaudio, etc,etc) and to be totally sincere here, i just don't want to steer in the same direction as others. There are soooooo many channels with affordable gear to the point that it is just TOO MUCH. You don't really see many channels with ultra-high end gear other than the typical videos from the different shows so i want to fill in that particular gap of the ultra high end with actual ownership.
I didn't say it .... But of course there are a few that always frown upon such things.
That's my point...can't please everyone since everyone likes different components and music.
It’s free. I am with my phone in my hand waiting to answers calls 24/7 to help others make a sale on my watch because I don’t have bills to pay and I don’t want to spend time with my family. It’s more amusing to take calls free of charge throughout the night. I should get a job with crutchfield. Maybe they are hiring?
I should be able to sell a denon receiver, polk audio speakers, sony blu ray players. I have owned them so I should be able to know how to.
Techno won’t answer...haven’t you noticed he vanishes when he doesn’t have an answer for people and then he resurfaces when he can insert or drop a bomb ? It’s easy to see what he does...not hard... When he has no comeback then he remains silent and then after a day or two he enters again hoping people forgot what he was asked....
I played that music to prove that i am not afraid and to also show that I DO enjoy more mainstream music. i do not sit at home listening to Diana Krall, Eric Clapton, Dire Straits all day long. I do throw in some Creed, Rick Ross, Limp Bizkit and Van Halen too. I do not understand the point of having a great system and you forbid yourself from playing tunes that you enjoy? yes they wont sound too good (if you blast them) but that does not mean you can’t listen to them at low to moderate volumes.

This is one reason why i don’t really judge systems at shows. Funeral music and elevator music is what they play in most systems. You walk into a room and then you hear this symphony or dark music and you wonder if they have a casket somewhere in the room ? should i bring flowers to the ceremony? did anybody write a Eulogy?
Ok no more assessments if you’re using your phone speaker please. It’s invalid lol
It's as if you are giving your opinion on something you have never heard lol. We all know how you feel about that. :)
Don’t get me started on the wife reminder of hours spent by day on this..
I have to drive far away for components...(20 hr drive for boulder 2110) so i have to have a balancing act that sometimes proves difficult.
Are you implying that you prefer m3 over the new reference gt audio speaker since you said you prefer the 20.7 over it ?
I hope that you are not telling the truth. If folks here are using their
O.59 cent phone speaker to judge components of the caliber that I am displaying, i hope they do this behind closed doors...don’t let me find out that some of the "hardcore" audiophiles that live here use phone speakers..... If they have luxmans, krells, b&w, nordost, shunyata,etc i don’t want to hear they don’t have $$500-$1000 dollars for a good set of headphones.... I think it is VERY FAIR to assume that ANYONE who follows my journey has a decent system so they aren’t exactly living paycheck to paycheck (i hope not).
I guarantee you that 99.99% of the people who read this thread have $500 dollars in the bank that they can spend on headphones if they feel like it. (if they feel like it of course)
Kren= wilson lover
Techno = focal  lover
Viber = gt audio lover
Mheinze= magico lover
Wcss= ???????

Well... My system sounds like straight GARBAGE since Saturday... The furutech outlet sound TERRIBLE... They sounded amazing for about two hours when I installed them but afterwards I thought I had broken something... No air, VERY DRY SOUND.... Bass is lacking body and it's quite tough to sit through things. I'll have to endure the 500 plus hours of break in... Maybe it's time to do more videos about some components.

If this is being evaluated via phone speakers, I’d like to know so I can scroll past this sort of analysis.
85k and 140k speakers being evaluated through a phone speaker is something I want to not rely on. Granted, people could lie and say they are using quality headphones when in reality they are still using the phone speaker at full blast while seating on the toilet.
Relying on your phone speaker to analyze this level of gear makes your analysis as valuable as you telling me you think I have herniated disc without doing a MRI to be 100% accurate of your findings.
