My Long List of Amplifiers and My Personal Review of Each!

So I have been in a long journey looking to find the best amplifiers for my martin logan montis. As you know, the match between an amplifier and speakers has to be a good "marriage" and needs to be blend exquisitely. Right now, I think I might have found the best sounding amplifier for martin logan. I have gone through approximately 34-36 amplifiers in the past 12 months. Some of these are:

Bryston ST, SST, SST2 series
NAD M25
PARASOUND HALO
PARASOUND CLASSIC
KRELL TAS
KRELL KAV 500
KRELL CHORUS
ROTEL RMB 1095
CLASSE CT 5300
CLASSE CA 2200
CLASSE CA 5200
MCINTOSH MC 205
CARY AUDIO CINEMA 7
OUTLAW AUDIO 755
LEXICON RX7
PASS LABS XA 30.8
BUTLER AUDIO 5150
ATI SIGNATURE SERIES 6005

With all that said, the amplifiers I mentioned above are the ones that in my opinion are worth mentioning. To make a long story short, there is NO 5 CHANNEL POWER AMP that sounds as good as a 3ch and 2ch amplifier combination. i have done both experiments and the truth is that YOU DO lose details and more channel separation, etc when you select a 5 channel power amplifier of any manufacturer.
My recollection of what each amp sounded like is as follows:

ATI SIGNATURE SERIES 6005 (great power and amazing soundstage. Very low noise floor, BUT this amplifiers NEEDS TO BE cranked up in order to fully enjoy it. If you like listening at low volume levels or somewhat moderate, you are wasting your time here. This amp won’t sound any different than many other brands out there at this volume. The bass is great, good highs although they are a bit bright for my taste)

NAD M25 (very smooth, powerful, but somewhat thin sounding as far as bass goes)
Bryston sst2(detailed, good soundstage, good power, but can be a little forward with certain speakers which could make them ear fatiguing at loud volumes)

Krell (fast sounding, nice bass attack, nice highs, but some detail does get lost with certain speakers)

rotel (good amp for the money, but too bright in my opinion)

cary audio (good sound overall, very musical, but it didn’t have enough oomph)

parasound halo (good detail, great bass, but it still holds back some background detail that i can hear in others)

lexicon (very laid back and smooth. huge power, but if you like more detail or crisper highs, this amp will disappoint you)

McIntosh mc205 (probably the worst multichannel amp given its price point. it was too thin sounding, had detail but lacked bass.

butler audio (good amplifier. very warm and smooth sweet sounding. i think for the money, this is a better amp than the parasound a51)

pass labs (very VERY musical with excellent bass control. You can listen to this for hours and hours without getting ear fatigue. however, it DOES NOT do well in home theater applications if all you have is a 2 channel set up for movies. The midrange gets somewhat "muddy" or very weak sounding that you find yourself trying to turn it up.

classe audio (best amplifier for multi channel applications. i simply COULDNT FIND a better multi channel amplifier PERIOD. IT has amazing smoothness, amazing power and good bass control although i would say krell has much better bass control)

Update: The reviews above were done in January 2015. Below is my newest update as of October 2016:

PS AUDIO BHK 300 MONOBLOCKS: Amazing amps. Tons of detail and really amazing midrange. the bass is amazing too, but the one thing i will say is that those of you with speakers efficiency of 87db and below you will not have all the "loudness" that you may want from time to time. These amps go into protection mode when using a speaker such as the Salon, but only at very loud levels. Maybe 97db and above. If you don’t listen to extreme crazy levels, these amps will please you in every way.

Plinius Odeon 7 channel amp: This is THE BEST multichannel amp i have ever owned. Far , but FAR SUPERIOR to any other multichannel amp i have owned. In my opinion it destroyed all of the multichannel amps i mentioned above and below. The Odeon is an amp that is in a different tier group and it is in a league of its own. Amazing bass, treble and it made my center channel sound more articulate than ever before. The voices where never scrambled with the action scenes. It just separated everything very nicely.

Theta Dreadnaught D: Good detailed amp. Looks very elegant, has a pleasant sound, but i found it a tad too bright for my taste. I thought it was also somewhat "thin" sounding lacking body to the music. could be that it is because it is class d?

Krell Duo 300: Good amp. Nice and detailed with enough power to handle most speakers out there. I found that it does have a very nice "3d" sound through my electrostatics. Nothing to fault here on this amp.
Mark Levinson 532H: Great 2 channel amp. Lots of detail, amazing midrange which is what Mark Levinson is known for. It sounds very holographic and will please those of you looking for more detail and a better midrange. As far as bass, it is there, but it is not going to give you the slam of a pass labs 350.5 or JC1s for example. It is great for those that appreciate classical music, instrumental, etc, but not those of you who love tons of deep bass.

 It is articulate sounding too
Krell 7200: Plenty of detail and enough power for most people. i found that my rear speakers contained more information after installed this amp. One thing that i hated is that you must use xlr cables with this amp or else you lose most of its sound performance when using RCA’s.

Krell 402e: Great amp. Very powerful and will handle any speaker you wish. Power is incredible and with great detail. That said, i didn’t get all the bass that most reviewers mentioned. I thought it was "ok" in regards to bass. It was there, but it didn’t slam me to my listening chair.

Bryston 4B3: Good amp with a complete sound. I think this amp is more laid back than the SST2 version. I think those of you who found the SST2 version of this amp a little too forward with your speakers will definitely benefit from this amp’s warmth. Bryston has gone towards the "warm" side in my opinion with their new SST3 series. As always, they are built like tanks. I wouldn’t call this amp tube-like, but rather closer to what the classe audio delta 2 series sound like which is on the warm side of things.

Parasound JC1s: Good powerful amps. Amazing low end punch (far superior bass than the 402e). This amp is the amp that i consider complete from top to bottom in regards to sound. Nothing is lacking other than perhaps a nicer chassis. Parasound needs to rework their external appearance when they introduce new amps. This amp would sell much more if it had a revised external appearance because the sound is a great bang for the money. It made my 800 Nautilus scream and slam. Again, amazing low end punch.

Simaudio W7: Good detailed amp. This amp reminds me a lot of the Mark Levinson 532h. Great detail and very articulate. I think this amp will go well with bookshelves that are ported in order to compensate for what it lacks when it comes to the bass. That doesn’t mean it has no bass, but when it is no Parasound JC1 either.
Pass labs 350.5: Wow, where do i begin? maybe my first time around with the xa30.8 wasn’t as special as it was with this monster 350.5. It is just SPECTACULAR sounding with my electrostatics. The bass was THE BEST BASS i have ever heard from ANY amp period. The only amp that comes close would be the jC1s. It made me check my settings to make sure the bass was not boosted and kept making my jaw drop each time i heard it. It totally destroyed the krell 402e in every regard. The krell sounded too "flat" when compared to this amp. This amp had amazing mirange with great detail up top. In my opinion, this amp is the best bang for the money. i loved this amp so much that i ended up buying the amp that follows below.

Pass labs 250.8: What can i say here. This is THE BEST STEREO AMP i have ever heard. This amp destroys all the amps i have listed above today to include the pass labs 350.5. It is a refined 350.5 amp. It has more 3d sound which is something the 350.5 lacked. It has a level of detail that i really have never experienced before and the bass was amazing as well. I really thought it was the most complete power amplifier i have ever heard HANDS DOWN. To me, this is a benchmark of an amplifier. This is the amp that others should be judged by. NOTHING is lacking and right now it is the #1 amplifier that i have ever owned.

My current amps are Mcintosh MC601s: i decided to give these 601s a try and they don’t disappoint. They have great detail, HUGE soundstage, MASSIVE power and great midrange/highs. The bass is great, but it is no pass labs 250.8 or 350.5. As far as looks, these are the best looking amps i have ever owned. No contest there. i gotta be honest with you all, i never bought mcintosh monos before because i wasn’t really "wowed" by the mc452, but it could have been also because at that time i was using a processor as a preamp which i no longer do. Today, i own the Mcintosh C1100 2 chassis tube preamp which sounds unbelievable. All the amps i just described above have been amps that i auditioned with the C1100 as a preamp. The MC601s sound great without a doubt, but i will say that if you are looking for THE BEST sound for the money, these would not be it. However, Mcintosh remains UNMATCHED when it comes to looks and also resale value. Every other amp above depreciates much faster than Mcintosh.

That said, my future purchase (when i can find a steal of a deal) will be the Pass labs 350.8. I am tempted to make a preliminary statement which is that i feel this amp could be THE BEST stereo amp under 30k dollars. Again, i will be able to say more and confirm once i own it. I hope this update can help you all in your buying decisions!

Techno,
the dealer that let me borrow the shunyata is not the same dealer that lent me the nordost.... he doesn’t carry nordost.
in addition to that, he doesn’t carry a 15a shunyata on hand so he would have to order it which means I have to buy it.
@asvjerry
I believe everyone is hearing crickets after the Eminem lyrics you posted above...
I don’t have a clue about audioquest because most dealers praise it but don’t have it lol. Imagine if I was to go by what people recommend to me? You all have any idea how many people reach out to me asking me to try x, y, and z?
Techno,
you are avoiding my proposition.... I’ve asked you to send me your cable so I can compare. As a matter of fact, I’m willing to send shipping labels to anyone willing to send me their cable so I can do a shootout here in my home. Any takers??????? If you believe in your cables being better then speak up and let’s do this. Let’s stop assuming stuff by reading specs or magazine reviews. You all know my opinion is based on gear I have my hands on.
No it's not Accuphase. I plan to keep listening to it for the next 3 weeks and then have a better understanding of what this amp can or can't do.
It still needs more time in the "oven" before I can form an opinion. I believe this amp WILL make a splash. For now, I am thinking about having 3 reference amps in my room at all times in order to see how they all behave with different speakers and cables.
Wow, I am thrilled to take on this challenge with you techno but there’s one problem: you aren’t a challenge. Never have been and never will.
I might just build my daughter a small system consisting of a single luxman 900u amp, McIntosh preamp and Dynaudio contour speakers so she can play the song "happy" by Ferrell Williams as well as all of the frozen songs all day long. Stay tuned for that. I might make that my second system in the house.
She is 4, so I’m sure she will be thrilled !! I'll put this together just for you since that is the exact system you have at home .
Cool techno. You win... I lose. You should go ahead and lead the conversations going forward with the spectacular gear you own. I’m handing you the mic. Go ahead
All-
it is clear to me that some of my daily followers are very offended by strong opinions from people who formulate opinions based on the “expertise” they gather from reading magazine articles which are often times financed by the big audio companies needing marketing in order to push product out the door. Although at times there are indeed honest articles that are informative and can help in making a big purchase, my thread gives input/opinion with gear that I own and that I DO NOT NEED for the manufacturer to give me a special deal in order to promote their product. I know factually some reviewers are bribed and given perks. Hell I wish I was given perks. Audiogon doesn’t even give me a discount code to save me some money in order for me to list my gear once I’m done with it and yes I know my thread draws traffic to this site which they benefit from. I don’t get a free taco with all the effort, time and money I spent and some of you certainly appreciate the fact that I don’t expect anything from anyone but one thing: Keep this thread going by stating FACTS with evidence and without drawing conclusions by what you read or someone else told you. I think this is indeed what is ticking people off. Talking in depth based on pure speculation. If someone wants to debate me then I welcome it AS LONG AS YOU CAN SAY YOU OWN OR HAVE OWNED  the product.
Well I can say this to you: there’s NOTHING lean about Odin 1 in my set up and the highs are better than they were before and mind you I’m still using wireworld interconnects and speaker cables. I’m switching to odin speaker cables next week so I guess we will see what happens. Right now, my set up sounds the best I’ve ever heard it.

Thanks kren.

For tonight's video, I'm not sure I want to use the ansuz xlr yet because I have not even used it...it's new without any break-in.
So I’m not sure if some of you know, but there’s a big audio show going on this weekend in Tampa. It actually started today and I was told the Neolith are there and sounded awful.... well, then when I was sent pics and saw what they were using (check my virtual system and look at the red pair of neoltihs) and sooooo Martin Logan was showcasing neoltihs with a parasound stereo amp, parasound preamp and aurender as a source. ARE YOU FREAKING KIDDING !!!!!!
This is a perfect example of what I’ve been saying all along. You CAN NOT do this to these speakers and I’m shocked that Martin Logan would do that. It’s almost like they don’t care to do this to their flagship speaker. Why in the world would they do this?????? Who buys a 80k speaker and uses 3k amplifiers, 2k preamp with it!!!!!
it just fires me up and this is why I said it a few pages ago that I wish I was there brought my full set up so I can embarrass them. It really is ridiculous what they are doing. How stupid do you have to be ?
I hate seeing those Neoliths in that environment. I would have fired everyone who put that together. It’s a disgrace to see their best speaker with Parasound gear. Please don’t take this as an insult to parasound but it’s in no way, shape or form at the level of a Neolith. That speaker is made for the “heavy hitters” such as Dag, constellation, soulution, block, etc.
Why don’t I go buy a corvette zr1 and order some Chinese tires to run 200 mph laps around the homestead speedway and then fill up the tank with 87 octane fuel? Gas is gas right ?
I am so happy I didn’t go to the show. I probably would have gone off.
ONE LAST THING FOR ALL OF YOU WHO GO TO SHOWS ALL THE TIME: this is the kind of garbage they do at shows. This is how SOME OF YOU judge gear.
Take THIS as an EXAMPLE that what you hear at shows isn’t always how a component should sound. You actually need to remember that there are idiots there connecting rca and xlr cables and pretending to create magic. This is why I do my own thing and don’t listen to magazines or stupid shows. It’s all polluted with lies and stupidity.
He’s just making an observation. I don’t think he’s trying to sell me anything. This is feedback I’ve received from different dealers in the past.
i was also told the magico A3 sound like garbage in this show.
Clx is an awesome speaker. It just lacks gallop and dynamics. The Neolith brings that to the table but if you have Amps with big balls.
Feel free to come to south Florida techno and bring diapers too since I suspect you’ll need them once you hear mine.
MY Top 4 amplifiers of 2018 in no particular order:

Block audio se
jeff Rowland 925s
musical fidelity titan
luxman 900u

I don’t have any experience with the simaudio 870a. I owned the 860a and I have always been impressed. Great amplifier for the money which could Put to shame a lot of amplifiers our there.
As far as my list above, I could also add the pass labs xs150, pass labs 200.5, simaudio 860a.
Thats correct. I did try to buy an external microphone for the phone which cost me like 400 dollars and that was a waste. I returned it. As I said before, I don't have an issue buying microphones but that will happen when I have enough subscribers that I can at least monetize and offset the cost of any recording equipment.
I believe I need to have around 2,000 subscribers to qualify to monetize and I am at around 800 subscribers. I think by the end of the year I should be at around 2000.
ALL,
So that everyone here understands WHY my opinion changes.
1. When i review an amplifier, i give my opinion right at that particular point and i am comparing to everything i have owned previously.
2. As i continue to push forward and bring other amplifiers, my ratings/opinion of previous amplifiers will change. Why? because i am trying new offerings that i had not tried before.

And to address the entire pass labs opinion, hell yes the statement above about the 250.8 was TRUE at that point in time before i tried plinius, luxman, hegel, block audio, jeff rowland, simaudio, etc, etc, etc. WHY would anyone think in their right mind that my opinion won’t change when i am continuing to try new high caliber amps? It is no different than you going to your room and declaring the Parasound A21 sitting in your room the very best amp ever. Of course you would say that because you haven’t tried luxman, hegel, simaudio, plinius etc. My thread evolves as new things are entering my living room.

Closing note: Yes, Pass labs is behind many amps right now. Unless you own the top XS amps, or possibly the 200.8, 200,5, you don’t know what you are missing out on. I remember trying the luxman 900u vs the 350.8 and it was just a shame how broken the 350.8 sounded. Huge monster amp and it has no way besting a 150 watt/channel amp.
understood skoot58. Hey, i haven't heard the 60.8, but i owned the 160.8 and 200.5s.
The only WAY to get REAL ANSWERS is for people to BUY all the gear they want to try rather than reading reviews from magazines or the HE/SHE SAID mentality. You all wanna know the issue? most people dont have the money or time to try all the gear i go through so what else can they do? follow my journey....that is all they can do... end of story..
Platinum 8 interconnects throughout. I also used the lampizator and oppo as preamps and into the amps. Same results.
Diablo is far better than the 585 Levinson. Not worth comparing. Same thing goes for the momentum integrated that’s collecting dust in my garage. It’s far better than the gryphon Diablo.
yes I’ve owned all 3 and this comes from hands on experience. For the money, the 585 is awesome but it is nowhere as muscular sounding as the Diablo. Levinson isn’t known for having dynamics but rather awesome mids. That’s what they are known for.
You could be right viber. That said, I got some feedback from a reliable source of mine who said the 535 sound just a little better than the Belca to 600 Monos.
Omg....from a dead cold start, 3 seconds of playtime, the ansuz signalz c2 xlr is impressive...HUUUUUUUGE SOUNDSTAGE.
My Valhalla 2 xlr will need to sweat hard as hell to best this xlr. I’m HIGHLY impressed right out of the gate. Zero break in and it is EASILY one of the best xlr I have ever owned. EASILY.
The Valhalla 2 vs ansuz MUST HAPPEN !
Nordos Odin speaker cables are here. New, fresh out of the box with zero miles here are my impressions:
1. Smaller soundstage when compared to my wireworld platinum 7
2. Presentation is congested
3. Some instruments are appearing that were not there before
4. Excellent separation of instruments
5. There seems to be more “rhythm” to the music.
More to come
Odin speaker cable and powecord update:
15 hours of playtime so far. I hear more decay with this speaker cable but the soundstage width is gone? I find things to be not as huge sounding as they did with the platinum 7. Instruments are better separated and have more articulation. That said, I’m now using a brand new Odin 1 on the dac so both the speaker cable and the powecord are with only 15 hours of playtime so it’s 2 components that are now breaking in. I’m also using the dac as a preamp. The ref10 has not been connected yet but I suspect that it will now really begin to show its true colors with these new speaker cables in the mix.
Stick to the gryphon Diablo for those speakers unless you can afford the luxman 900u amp and preamp. Try not to mix and match with the luxman 900u amp. Use their 900u preamp if possible.
We shall see with the speaker cables. Things are too new right now for me to give any final conclusion. They need 200 hours of break in so I’ll keep doing this throughout the weekend and next week. By the end of next week I’ll have over 200 hours on them and then I’ll be able to analyze.
There’s nothing wrong with stating an opinion, but CLEAR that this is based on what you heard or were told. The real issue here is when people give strong opinions making seem like they’ve owned the equipment when in reality they’ve only seen it on pictures. They’ve never even seen the equipment in person.
I’m going to not mislead anyone right now and say that I just realized I had the nordost speaker Odin cables connected the wrong way.... they are directional cables and unfortunately I wasn’t told. I had both cables connected the opposite way. The end that is supposed to go into the speakers was connected into the amps. Not sure how much of an impact this will have on things or if anyone in here has done a trial by using directional speaker cables and connecting them the other way. Will I notice a difference in the sound ? We shall see...
Sooooooo I just plugged in the ref10 and threw it to sink or swim and it is now an entire different animal. The speaker cables have created more of a focused image and made the presentation totally different. The dac was sounding probably better with the platinum 7 speaker cables when used as a preamp but the ref10 seems to sound better with the Odin speaker cables. I still am getting slight shoutinness from the speakers when cranked up. Things are still a little bright right now.
Viber,
anytime you use car and women analogies I understand things better lol. Keep them coming.
So with that said, do you all see WHY my impressions of these cables weren’t great? That’s HOW MUCH my ears are dialed in with my equipment.  I know when something comes in and misses a beat. I can probably tell you if something is out of phase by listening to a song for 10 seconds or less. I have been playing this game for long enough that I can tell you when something isn’t right for a component (for the most part). For instance, i didn’t like the B&w d3 tweeter with luxman. It sounded too aggressive at times and I fatigued quickly. I did not like Mark Levinson with my Sonus Faber cremonese because they fall flat on their face. I love panels with tubes in the mix or class A.  I hated classe audio and electrostatics. I liked pass labs with electrostatics and hated it with Wilson audio. This type of exposure to different components allows me to know when there’s something missing or not there. This is what keeps me going and going in order to keep adding an extra ounce of
this n that. I got my neoltihs pretty good given my room dimensions. That’s my bottleneck at this time. That said, I’ve heard big rooms with nice gear and I’m not going to say I was blown away. It will take a very well thought out system for me to acknowledge it as vastly superior. So far, the only systems that seem to be kicking a$$ at shows are Wilson with arc gear or agostino.
I am not using the powecord in the mix right now. I’m burning it in using other components that use the same cable.
So I’m listening to the Odin 2 speaker cables right now without the Odin powercord in the mix right now and I gotta be honest, the platinum 7 sounded far deeper and wider. Right now, at this very moment, I’d take the platinum 7 wireworld speaker over the Odin 1. Yep, you heard it from me. The Odin 1 pc on the dac with the rest being platinum 7 sounded SPECTACULAR here. Just clean sounding, zero harshness and huge HUUUUGE.
If the Odin 1 speaker cable doesn’t morph TREMENDOUSLY by next weekend, then I can say this experiment failed me and synergy begins to be the name of the game.

PS. I’m playing with the block audios in Class AB and yes they don’t sound anything like in class A. I remember some people saying that they heard zero difference in the Plinius sa103 in class a or Class AB. Well, let me tell you with these block audios you’ll hear quite a difference. It’s like in Class AB the amps are on 6 cylinders and then in Class A they are a v12 twin turbo engine.
If I had 30k to spend, I'd buy a luxman 900u and simaudio 860v2.  This way you can't be second guessing yourself as to what you like best. Trust me there will be recordings where you will prefer the luxman over the simaudio. I tested this theory myself and it is the case. The gryphon is amazing with slam and dynamics but it does add a hint, a smudge of honey due to it's class a design which is well received in my book with piss poor recordings.
As far as WHAT PREAMP would sweeten the 860v2... Look, don't even try to go around burning money; Buy a ref10 and prepare to be FLOORED with the synergy it has with simaudio. I did this YEARS ago when I owned the v1 860a and I was in love.
It is a combo that will put many systems to shame with the right speakers.
Totally agree with your assessment above. That said, if someone is looking to be surrounded by an immense amount of musicality and soundstage, Id choose the ref10 for the simaudio. That said, the momentum HD is becoming more and more that component that I am simply afraid to even think about parting ways with. It really is the most enjoyable solid state preamp I've owned. Is it better than the boulder 2010? Its hard to say because my system has changed so much...
All-
the oppo 205 with the nordost Odín 1 powercord and the WireWorld Platinum 8 xlr sounds INCREDIBLE to say the least. I’m in shock how good it sounds as a dac. Wow.
I need to give these cables a fair shot before I try to do anything. I’m going to take them back to my dealer and he will burn them for 210 hours. Time will tell what is going to happen.
That said, I’m shocked how amazing the oppo 205 sounds when streaming music using roon and the Odin powercord on it.
It is unreal how that cable can turn a 1200 Blu-ray player into something that can compete with far more expensive sources.
