My Long List of Amplifiers and My Personal Review of Each!

So I have been in a long journey looking to find the best amplifiers for my martin logan montis. As you know, the match between an amplifier and speakers has to be a good "marriage" and needs to be blend exquisitely. Right now, I think I might have found the best sounding amplifier for martin logan. I have gone through approximately 34-36 amplifiers in the past 12 months. Some of these are:

Bryston ST, SST, SST2 series
NAD M25
PARASOUND HALO
PARASOUND CLASSIC
KRELL TAS
KRELL KAV 500
KRELL CHORUS
ROTEL RMB 1095
CLASSE CT 5300
CLASSE CA 2200
CLASSE CA 5200
MCINTOSH MC 205
CARY AUDIO CINEMA 7
OUTLAW AUDIO 755
LEXICON RX7
PASS LABS XA 30.8
BUTLER AUDIO 5150
ATI SIGNATURE SERIES 6005

With all that said, the amplifiers I mentioned above are the ones that in my opinion are worth mentioning. To make a long story short, there is NO 5 CHANNEL POWER AMP that sounds as good as a 3ch and 2ch amplifier combination. i have done both experiments and the truth is that YOU DO lose details and more channel separation, etc when you select a 5 channel power amplifier of any manufacturer.
My recollection of what each amp sounded like is as follows:

ATI SIGNATURE SERIES 6005 (great power and amazing soundstage. Very low noise floor, BUT this amplifiers NEEDS TO BE cranked up in order to fully enjoy it. If you like listening at low volume levels or somewhat moderate, you are wasting your time here. This amp won’t sound any different than many other brands out there at this volume. The bass is great, good highs although they are a bit bright for my taste)

NAD M25 (very smooth, powerful, but somewhat thin sounding as far as bass goes)
Bryston sst2(detailed, good soundstage, good power, but can be a little forward with certain speakers which could make them ear fatiguing at loud volumes)

Krell (fast sounding, nice bass attack, nice highs, but some detail does get lost with certain speakers)

rotel (good amp for the money, but too bright in my opinion)

cary audio (good sound overall, very musical, but it didn’t have enough oomph)

parasound halo (good detail, great bass, but it still holds back some background detail that i can hear in others)

lexicon (very laid back and smooth. huge power, but if you like more detail or crisper highs, this amp will disappoint you)

McIntosh mc205 (probably the worst multichannel amp given its price point. it was too thin sounding, had detail but lacked bass.

butler audio (good amplifier. very warm and smooth sweet sounding. i think for the money, this is a better amp than the parasound a51)

pass labs (very VERY musical with excellent bass control. You can listen to this for hours and hours without getting ear fatigue. however, it DOES NOT do well in home theater applications if all you have is a 2 channel set up for movies. The midrange gets somewhat "muddy" or very weak sounding that you find yourself trying to turn it up.

classe audio (best amplifier for multi channel applications. i simply COULDNT FIND a better multi channel amplifier PERIOD. IT has amazing smoothness, amazing power and good bass control although i would say krell has much better bass control)

Update: The reviews above were done in January 2015. Below is my newest update as of October 2016:

PS AUDIO BHK 300 MONOBLOCKS: Amazing amps. Tons of detail and really amazing midrange. the bass is amazing too, but the one thing i will say is that those of you with speakers efficiency of 87db and below you will not have all the "loudness" that you may want from time to time. These amps go into protection mode when using a speaker such as the Salon, but only at very loud levels. Maybe 97db and above. If you don’t listen to extreme crazy levels, these amps will please you in every way.

Plinius Odeon 7 channel amp: This is THE BEST multichannel amp i have ever owned. Far , but FAR SUPERIOR to any other multichannel amp i have owned. In my opinion it destroyed all of the multichannel amps i mentioned above and below. The Odeon is an amp that is in a different tier group and it is in a league of its own. Amazing bass, treble and it made my center channel sound more articulate than ever before. The voices where never scrambled with the action scenes. It just separated everything very nicely.

Theta Dreadnaught D: Good detailed amp. Looks very elegant, has a pleasant sound, but i found it a tad too bright for my taste. I thought it was also somewhat "thin" sounding lacking body to the music. could be that it is because it is class d?

Krell Duo 300: Good amp. Nice and detailed with enough power to handle most speakers out there. I found that it does have a very nice "3d" sound through my electrostatics. Nothing to fault here on this amp.
Mark Levinson 532H: Great 2 channel amp. Lots of detail, amazing midrange which is what Mark Levinson is known for. It sounds very holographic and will please those of you looking for more detail and a better midrange. As far as bass, it is there, but it is not going to give you the slam of a pass labs 350.5 or JC1s for example. It is great for those that appreciate classical music, instrumental, etc, but not those of you who love tons of deep bass.

 It is articulate sounding too
Krell 7200: Plenty of detail and enough power for most people. i found that my rear speakers contained more information after installed this amp. One thing that i hated is that you must use xlr cables with this amp or else you lose most of its sound performance when using RCA’s.

Krell 402e: Great amp. Very powerful and will handle any speaker you wish. Power is incredible and with great detail. That said, i didn’t get all the bass that most reviewers mentioned. I thought it was "ok" in regards to bass. It was there, but it didn’t slam me to my listening chair.

Bryston 4B3: Good amp with a complete sound. I think this amp is more laid back than the SST2 version. I think those of you who found the SST2 version of this amp a little too forward with your speakers will definitely benefit from this amp’s warmth. Bryston has gone towards the "warm" side in my opinion with their new SST3 series. As always, they are built like tanks. I wouldn’t call this amp tube-like, but rather closer to what the classe audio delta 2 series sound like which is on the warm side of things.

Parasound JC1s: Good powerful amps. Amazing low end punch (far superior bass than the 402e). This amp is the amp that i consider complete from top to bottom in regards to sound. Nothing is lacking other than perhaps a nicer chassis. Parasound needs to rework their external appearance when they introduce new amps. This amp would sell much more if it had a revised external appearance because the sound is a great bang for the money. It made my 800 Nautilus scream and slam. Again, amazing low end punch.

Simaudio W7: Good detailed amp. This amp reminds me a lot of the Mark Levinson 532h. Great detail and very articulate. I think this amp will go well with bookshelves that are ported in order to compensate for what it lacks when it comes to the bass. That doesn’t mean it has no bass, but when it is no Parasound JC1 either.
Pass labs 350.5: Wow, where do i begin? maybe my first time around with the xa30.8 wasn’t as special as it was with this monster 350.5. It is just SPECTACULAR sounding with my electrostatics. The bass was THE BEST BASS i have ever heard from ANY amp period. The only amp that comes close would be the jC1s. It made me check my settings to make sure the bass was not boosted and kept making my jaw drop each time i heard it. It totally destroyed the krell 402e in every regard. The krell sounded too "flat" when compared to this amp. This amp had amazing mirange with great detail up top. In my opinion, this amp is the best bang for the money. i loved this amp so much that i ended up buying the amp that follows below.

Pass labs 250.8: What can i say here. This is THE BEST STEREO AMP i have ever heard. This amp destroys all the amps i have listed above today to include the pass labs 350.5. It is a refined 350.5 amp. It has more 3d sound which is something the 350.5 lacked. It has a level of detail that i really have never experienced before and the bass was amazing as well. I really thought it was the most complete power amplifier i have ever heard HANDS DOWN. To me, this is a benchmark of an amplifier. This is the amp that others should be judged by. NOTHING is lacking and right now it is the #1 amplifier that i have ever owned.

My current amps are Mcintosh MC601s: i decided to give these 601s a try and they don’t disappoint. They have great detail, HUGE soundstage, MASSIVE power and great midrange/highs. The bass is great, but it is no pass labs 250.8 or 350.5. As far as looks, these are the best looking amps i have ever owned. No contest there. i gotta be honest with you all, i never bought mcintosh monos before because i wasn’t really "wowed" by the mc452, but it could have been also because at that time i was using a processor as a preamp which i no longer do. Today, i own the Mcintosh C1100 2 chassis tube preamp which sounds unbelievable. All the amps i just described above have been amps that i auditioned with the C1100 as a preamp. The MC601s sound great without a doubt, but i will say that if you are looking for THE BEST sound for the money, these would not be it. However, Mcintosh remains UNMATCHED when it comes to looks and also resale value. Every other amp above depreciates much faster than Mcintosh.

That said, my future purchase (when i can find a steal of a deal) will be the Pass labs 350.8. I am tempted to make a preliminary statement which is that i feel this amp could be THE BEST stereo amp under 30k dollars. Again, i will be able to say more and confirm once i own it. I hope this update can help you all in your buying decisions!

This is an open forum . It is not owned by the OP or anyone else . People are allowed to post their thoughts and opinions about whatever they want, as long as it is civil. Everything in these forums is someones opinion anyway. Moderators will not, and do not ask people to refrain from posting in a thread , so .... get over it already.

I think i have asked before , but I would really like to hear which songs really stand out as sounding good on your equipment. You said that Electronic Music sounded really good. Which songs or Artists really make your speakers "Shine" so to speak. I know I have a list of songs in jRiver Media Center Under the Playlist I created called "Demo Songs"
These are songs that sound really good on my system . Do you have such a list either in your head or written down .
Does anyone else have this type of compilation, or even thoughts on some good "Demo" songs.
@whitecamaross
Sometime in your up-bringing, you have been wrongly influenced to believe that cost equals performance.
The Dag integrated sounds warm with Logans with no controls engaged. The ref10/Plinius is not as warm and no Plinius is far from being warm. I’d say it’s a little on the forward side of things, but just a little.
Of course I’m sure if I spent more money on amprs then the Neolith will sound even better
I’ve said it here before and today I followed my own advice and look. I’m actually thinking: why would I want to spend 20k in a pair of Luxman if the sound is impressive right now with little money ?

I hope hat this has been an AWAKENING.
You can only realize and accept this concept with Experience... IMO.
This is why i said that one day you will "Get It"
Thank you for your honesty.

On another note, I do not know how far you are from Eric Love of
http://www.audiosurroundings.com/catalog.php/Ericlove/pg5701

He ..is who i buy from when i want Purist Audio Design Cables and Plinius Amps .
Eric Love is a Great guy .
He is honest and Fair .He will treat you right .

P.S.

I am so glad that you have found the best setup ... for now

I know that you have put in enough time and energy to get the best results.

Please stick with these for a while and fine tune them...

I am so very pleased that you got the results that you wanted.

I could tell by some of your posts that you were somewhat unsure , but Now you are coming through with confidence that you have got it right . Enjoy your system , because we are enjoying  the Journey.

I know you have more amps on the way. I was just hoping that you run the Plinius long enough to break in , or at least keep in rotation so that it  can fairly be compared to the ones coming.
@Viber6.You describe the "upfront"  , "in your face " front row listening experience as , "matter of fact". You seem to think THAT presentation is preferred by the rest of us . I have to agree with MR decibel here..You for some reason think that everyone else prefers to hear the presentation as upfront or  in your face , like you do. Sadly ,you are mistaken I can assure you that it is not what most of us prefer. I would say that because you sometimes participate in the presentation , is why you prefer the upfront , in your face sound. There is a reason why they MIX  the recording. If you are upfront or first row at most any presentation, the sound will not be good . It will be uneven. You know this .You will hear a lot more of whatever or whoever is playing closest to you,and many times you will not hear the rest of the band or instruments .Actually, most albums are mixed pretty evenly  or balanced. I think the reason you prefer the EQ is so that you can tune it to sound like you are upfront or participating and getting blasted by the instruments near you.just my opinion of course.

@Viber6 Emotiva is "Bright " sounding if pushed, at all.I own the LPA-1 and have had it for years . I use it for Center, surround L&Rand the Outdoor pool speakers It is not as bright as any of the XPAs.I had the Emotiva XPA-1 Gen2 monos . I used them here on the Tekton Double Impact. They had Execllent Bass and overall pretty darn good .... for the money. If i cranked up the volume to get 85 -100 db peaks it became harsh sounding.
But, I realize that YOU like a "bright" sound .Therefore you will like the Emotiva . Most of use dodo not.
There is a difference in "Brilliance" and "Bright".....at least to me
To me Bright is or can be harsh , but Brilliance is lit up or elevated in that range , but not harsh . At least that is the way i always understood it to be .
I assure you , it is all in jest on my part. I mean no harm. I am just throwing a quick jab, while he is on the ropes and trying to recover from all of the other heavy blows.
I believe he is s counter-puncher, and will work his way out.

Don’t forget Viber6 is a Doctor. Many Doctors do have GOD complexes. So ....he may not be able to help it. Actually he may  need to see himself about that. ?
@Viber6
I will say that you have not heard my system and have no idea the kind of detail that I am getting. So YOU Do not KNOW what i am NOT MISSING. Music is not always about excitement . It depends on the Music .
Please understand that we do not all listen to orchestral music. I listen to a lot of Techno, Electoinica, Jazz, Jazz Fusion, Modern Blues. ETC
Let it go !!
I am not listening to chamber music , nor ,am i listening to music in a concert hall. I do not listen to that type of music. My preference would be a Jazz or Blues club. That ,my friend, is where you’ll get the best LIVE sound .
Please let it go. I have Detail out the Wazoo.
If you do not believe me , then you are welcome to come by and listen anytime you like .
I have my system setup for a live electrified, small Blues or Jazz Venue.
Have you seen my pictures in "Greyhounds System".
I am only about 8.5 to 9 feet away from the speakers.
With the new to me Granite Audio 864SR Mono amps using a NOS Pair of Raytheon 6F8G input tubes (V1)and a Pair of 2 Hole Black Plate Sylvania "Bad Boy" 6SN7GT/VT-231(V2) from the 1940s as the Driver tubes .We are using the Shuguang Kt-88Z Treasure Tubes as output tubes and a couple of Chatham /Tung Sol 5R4WGB Rectifiers I forgot ot mention that i Replaced all of the coupling caps in each mono amp, with the Jupiter Copper Foil Paper & Wax. That was 5 in each amp. the results are Outstanding to say the least.
I am also using Grannyrings (Bill Dion) Acoustic BBQ ICS with Excellent results.
I have the sound of a Live ,intimate, Blues or Jazz club.
If I listen at low levels , it is a little laid back sounding, but also because if this , it allows me to turn it up to 95-100 db peaks and above ,and the players are Live right in front of me
This is the sound i am looking for and I HAVE IT !
Anyone who wants to come and decide if I am right is welcome to. just let me kn ow and we will arrange a Demo Session.

@ Viber6
.
Just STOP .STOP..STOP...PLEASE ?
Don’t put lipstick on a dead horse !
Viber6,I have lived in Dallas ,TX Phoenix,AZ, grew up in Southeastern IN, and have now been in Knoxville,TN for the last 25 years

@sqitis
I'm thinking some Ref 250SE mono's fully loaded and upgraded

That would also be an Excellent choice

Lyngdorf Room Correction is not difficult. If you can read and follow directions, then you can do it !
It works as well or better than room treatments. With room treatments ,there is a lot of trial and error and  measuring ,or data collection. After interpreting or calculating the data, then applying the material for correction, and re-collecting data . or re-measuring to see where you are .
With Lyngdorf  it is all done quite easily and I can assure you that it works very well. Check out the Lyngdorf thread
https://forum.audiogon.com/discussions/who-has-luv-for-the-lyngdorf-2170-and-is-thinking-about-the-3400

yes ,you should try one (stereo)amp on the top section , with a different (stereo) amp on the bottom  section or switch them top vs bottom to the other amps.It could be interesting.Of Course, this way  is Bi-amping ,not bi-wiring, which should be better !!
I think you would be shocked at the cost to performance ratio of these .
https://www.audiogon.com/listings/lis997cb-acoustic-bbq-duelund-12-gauge-power-cord-4-footer-w-rhodium-plated-conductors-ac-cables
But, as usual,,you will turn your nose up at them since they do not cost mega bucks.  I own the interconnects. They are Outstanding. You can trust Bill (grannyring), when he says they are good... they are GOOD !! You can choose whatever (brand) of power cord ends you want.
I also have asked in the past for WCSS demo list and got ZERO response. I am not sure why, unless he just uses one Dire Straits album or song ?.
Seems that this would be good info to have so that we could try the same stuff on our own system .. ????
I also sent him a bunch of "Demo" Cds , but never heard back which, if any sounded good or worked good for demoing on his system.
I don’t know about anyone else , but me , I GOTTA have bass.
I have switched my amps from the Mc30 (had great deep bass) to the Granite Audio 865SR Mono Block Tube amps , which have even better deep layered Bass.
I am using some Raytheon 6F8G in the V1 spot and the Sylvania Vt-231 From The 1940s with two hole black ladder plates in the V2 For the V3 and V4 are a Pair of Shuguang treasure KT-88Z and the Recticifer is Jan Cetron 5R4-WGB.
.The Sylvanias are Holographic with great mids and Resolution, but i have to Have the Raytheon in V1 to give me Killer layers and Layers of bass.
The best Bass that i have had from any Tube amps. These are my favorite tube amps , by far.
It is too bad that they would not work on WCSS speakers. But if you ever decided to try some high efficiency speakers, Tube amps is the way to go IMO
oh BTW I forgot to mention that i replaced all of the coupling caps in each of the 864SR amps with Jupiter Copper Foil Paper in Wax caps ..... Outstanding .
I did this on the recommendation of Grannyring (Bill Dion ) ..BTW
But tube amps are really where it is , with highly efficient speakers .. Really .
Tube amps have that special . clean clear smooth , you are there , that solid state just can’t do .
WCSS do you remember the sound of the Mac tube amps . The Presence and Intimacy that solid state just cannot match ? Or........ did you forget already ?
Really Techno_rude ?
It is Polish
Written in 2006 from their website is below :

Lampizator - from Polish "Lampa" meaning the vacuum tube (or a valve) - lampizator is "the one who makes things tubed".
The man, in this context - it’s me.
Or a device converting CD players to "tubed type". In this context - the output amplification device.
Lampizator is the most talked-about item in the hi-fi circles after the rise and fall of SACD ! ;-)

Lampizator is serious equipment
I think people can’t take you seriously either. You can’t even spell it right...LOL
That’s funny. You are asking ME why I got rid of something.. when you change equipment more often than your underwear .. LOL. I Needed Money.
You asked for that one .
I actually owned the Lampizator Big 6 not the 7 .. sorry .
Anyway it has been 4 or 5 years ago.
I remember it was very 3D , had the "midrange Magic" but also had very Good bass and it was fairly transparent. It sounded very real with Zero hardness or Grain. It had the realness of tubes.
I know that i changed several of the tubes to NOS tubes , but i do not remember which they were. I know one i changed to was a 6F8G, which is one of my favorite tubes, especially in the place of 6SN7. I remember that i had a National Union (coke bottle )Rectifier Tube .
I just remember the soundstage depth and height being about the best that i have heard as well as it being very very soulful.
Wow .
Both the speakers and the amps are HUGE!!
You have all hard surfaces .You look like you need some rugs, carpet, or some soft things in your room.I bet the reflections are horrendous.
For someone who owns Mega buck equipment you would think they would know to ...... Well ..............never mind !
For the REF 10 ,I thought the power supply tubes were the  6550 . One for each channel ..Correct ?Then it is 10 of the 6H30p (Russian tubes) Which is what was in my Lampi Big 6 BTW (i remember that number now . It used 2 and a 6F8G). I was not real tube knowledgeable at the time.

WCSS ...So you mean the winged C 6550 was in there , not kt88s? ?
What is stock 6550 .....which brand and model # please ?
@jonaiken ..WOW that is a lot of money for tubes
Don't say that too loudly or too often. You'll have the price of the RCA 12BH7 going through the roof
WCSS, I am not being bitter, I am just calling it like i see it .
There have been many great used products or recommendations by many people , that you pass on. I am just saying that you pass because you can't turn a profit . From what I have seen , if you can't come out making money ,you won' but it . I am not bitter. i wasn't referring to any particular equipment that Viber6 mentioned . They were several .Yes, you have every right to do what you want. just like i have the right to state my opinion.
He can’t make money on those Viber. He has to buy them cheap and sell for a profit or he won’t do it .
It is really what it is all about for him. If you look at all of the recommendations that he is not interested in , it is obvious. That is why he doesn’t know what tubes he has in his REF10 .It is also why he won’t give us a Demo song-list.. It is all about the money and the profit, not really the product.
I never said it was wrong or that I had a problem with it .. ..... Absolutely nothing wrong with what he is doing.
@jetter
If you perceive it as negative interpretations ... so be it .Happy New Year to all..
@jetter ,
It is not clear to us casual readers what has given you the idea that anyone cares what you think about WC one way or the other
.
I do not think posting my opinions is any different than you or anyone else who posts in the forum. What makes you so sure anyone cares about yours, or anyone else’s, for that matter. Everyone is entitled to an opinion. 99% of posts in this forum are opinions, including yours. I did not ask you to like mine Nor
did I ask anyone what they thought about my opinion....did I ?
Plus I never said that WCSS was in the wrong in any way ...Did I?
C’Mon now .Let’s put your Big Boy pants on and take off the pullup’s .

@jetter
"appear to say anything to share WCSS spotlight"
When your contribution doesn’t get you enough attention you get downright nasty,

Come one . really? If you read my posts , you know that is not true. What post are you referring to that my contribution doesn’t get enough attention ?
I only threw Vibers name in because he recommended and has in the past recommended, several amps ,all of which WCSS is not interested in , for the reasons I Stated before.
Lets stop this bickering.
I said what i said , just deal with it . I can’t help it you feel that I hurt your feelings or WCSS. He can defend himself. I do not think he really needs you to defend him. We are all grown ups here ... right .
I said WCSS won’t buy anything he cannot make money on.
He has every right to do so .
End of Story

My comments were not intended to be negative , because there is nothing wrong with it. I will say that I have gotten several private messages agreeing with me.
It seems that the logic that I pointed out , is coming across . I’ll leave it at that .
This happens to be a Public Thread WCSS. Surely you know this .You do not own it. Because of this you invited the PUBLIC Because of this it is not your house or your food , even though you may think so. I think you are being a little Almighty.
You started the thread knowing that people will and do express their feelings and opinions.

I was only responding to everyone’s else criticism of me and defending what i said .It is others who can’t move on. I agree... lets forget about it ! Let it go !
Glad you liked it WCSS. I think it is spot on, from my experience.
To me Tubes are the closest to the real think . Tubes are NOT rolled off. Tubes sound more real to me than anything, at least with the music that I listen to which is mostly Jazz, Blues, Funk,Electronica, and Lounge.
To me, there is just something artificial and not natural about Solid State  IMO You especially notice this after you have owned or heard tubes.
WCSS, I would love to send to you these Granite Audio 864SR Mono amps that I have with the Nos Tubes and the Jupiter Copper Foil coupling caps , but I know they will not work on your current speakers.
If you happen to get something that is in the 92db and above efficiency range, they would work. So , if that happens ,I can get them to you for a listen.
