My Long List of Amplifiers and My Personal Review of Each!

So I have been in a long journey looking to find the best amplifiers for my martin logan montis. As you know, the match between an amplifier and speakers has to be a good "marriage" and needs to be blend exquisitely. Right now, I think I might have found the best sounding amplifier for martin logan. I have gone through approximately 34-36 amplifiers in the past 12 months. Some of these are:

Bryston ST, SST, SST2 series
NAD M25
PARASOUND HALO
PARASOUND CLASSIC
KRELL TAS
KRELL KAV 500
KRELL CHORUS
ROTEL RMB 1095
CLASSE CT 5300
CLASSE CA 2200
CLASSE CA 5200
MCINTOSH MC 205
CARY AUDIO CINEMA 7
OUTLAW AUDIO 755
LEXICON RX7
PASS LABS XA 30.8
BUTLER AUDIO 5150
ATI SIGNATURE SERIES 6005

With all that said, the amplifiers I mentioned above are the ones that in my opinion are worth mentioning. To make a long story short, there is NO 5 CHANNEL POWER AMP that sounds as good as a 3ch and 2ch amplifier combination. i have done both experiments and the truth is that YOU DO lose details and more channel separation, etc when you select a 5 channel power amplifier of any manufacturer.
My recollection of what each amp sounded like is as follows:

ATI SIGNATURE SERIES 6005 (great power and amazing soundstage. Very low noise floor, BUT this amplifiers NEEDS TO BE cranked up in order to fully enjoy it. If you like listening at low volume levels or somewhat moderate, you are wasting your time here. This amp won’t sound any different than many other brands out there at this volume. The bass is great, good highs although they are a bit bright for my taste)

NAD M25 (very smooth, powerful, but somewhat thin sounding as far as bass goes)
Bryston sst2(detailed, good soundstage, good power, but can be a little forward with certain speakers which could make them ear fatiguing at loud volumes)

Krell (fast sounding, nice bass attack, nice highs, but some detail does get lost with certain speakers)

rotel (good amp for the money, but too bright in my opinion)

cary audio (good sound overall, very musical, but it didn’t have enough oomph)

parasound halo (good detail, great bass, but it still holds back some background detail that i can hear in others)

lexicon (very laid back and smooth. huge power, but if you like more detail or crisper highs, this amp will disappoint you)

McIntosh mc205 (probably the worst multichannel amp given its price point. it was too thin sounding, had detail but lacked bass.

butler audio (good amplifier. very warm and smooth sweet sounding. i think for the money, this is a better amp than the parasound a51)

pass labs (very VERY musical with excellent bass control. You can listen to this for hours and hours without getting ear fatigue. however, it DOES NOT do well in home theater applications if all you have is a 2 channel set up for movies. The midrange gets somewhat "muddy" or very weak sounding that you find yourself trying to turn it up.

classe audio (best amplifier for multi channel applications. i simply COULDNT FIND a better multi channel amplifier PERIOD. IT has amazing smoothness, amazing power and good bass control although i would say krell has much better bass control)

Update: The reviews above were done in January 2015. Below is my newest update as of October 2016:

PS AUDIO BHK 300 MONOBLOCKS: Amazing amps. Tons of detail and really amazing midrange. the bass is amazing too, but the one thing i will say is that those of you with speakers efficiency of 87db and below you will not have all the "loudness" that you may want from time to time. These amps go into protection mode when using a speaker such as the Salon, but only at very loud levels. Maybe 97db and above. If you don’t listen to extreme crazy levels, these amps will please you in every way.

Plinius Odeon 7 channel amp: This is THE BEST multichannel amp i have ever owned. Far , but FAR SUPERIOR to any other multichannel amp i have owned. In my opinion it destroyed all of the multichannel amps i mentioned above and below. The Odeon is an amp that is in a different tier group and it is in a league of its own. Amazing bass, treble and it made my center channel sound more articulate than ever before. The voices where never scrambled with the action scenes. It just separated everything very nicely.

Theta Dreadnaught D: Good detailed amp. Looks very elegant, has a pleasant sound, but i found it a tad too bright for my taste. I thought it was also somewhat "thin" sounding lacking body to the music. could be that it is because it is class d?

Krell Duo 300: Good amp. Nice and detailed with enough power to handle most speakers out there. I found that it does have a very nice "3d" sound through my electrostatics. Nothing to fault here on this amp.
Mark Levinson 532H: Great 2 channel amp. Lots of detail, amazing midrange which is what Mark Levinson is known for. It sounds very holographic and will please those of you looking for more detail and a better midrange. As far as bass, it is there, but it is not going to give you the slam of a pass labs 350.5 or JC1s for example. It is great for those that appreciate classical music, instrumental, etc, but not those of you who love tons of deep bass.

 It is articulate sounding too
Krell 7200: Plenty of detail and enough power for most people. i found that my rear speakers contained more information after installed this amp. One thing that i hated is that you must use xlr cables with this amp or else you lose most of its sound performance when using RCA’s.

Krell 402e: Great amp. Very powerful and will handle any speaker you wish. Power is incredible and with great detail. That said, i didn’t get all the bass that most reviewers mentioned. I thought it was "ok" in regards to bass. It was there, but it didn’t slam me to my listening chair.

Bryston 4B3: Good amp with a complete sound. I think this amp is more laid back than the SST2 version. I think those of you who found the SST2 version of this amp a little too forward with your speakers will definitely benefit from this amp’s warmth. Bryston has gone towards the "warm" side in my opinion with their new SST3 series. As always, they are built like tanks. I wouldn’t call this amp tube-like, but rather closer to what the classe audio delta 2 series sound like which is on the warm side of things.

Parasound JC1s: Good powerful amps. Amazing low end punch (far superior bass than the 402e). This amp is the amp that i consider complete from top to bottom in regards to sound. Nothing is lacking other than perhaps a nicer chassis. Parasound needs to rework their external appearance when they introduce new amps. This amp would sell much more if it had a revised external appearance because the sound is a great bang for the money. It made my 800 Nautilus scream and slam. Again, amazing low end punch.

Simaudio W7: Good detailed amp. This amp reminds me a lot of the Mark Levinson 532h. Great detail and very articulate. I think this amp will go well with bookshelves that are ported in order to compensate for what it lacks when it comes to the bass. That doesn’t mean it has no bass, but when it is no Parasound JC1 either.
Pass labs 350.5: Wow, where do i begin? maybe my first time around with the xa30.8 wasn’t as special as it was with this monster 350.5. It is just SPECTACULAR sounding with my electrostatics. The bass was THE BEST BASS i have ever heard from ANY amp period. The only amp that comes close would be the jC1s. It made me check my settings to make sure the bass was not boosted and kept making my jaw drop each time i heard it. It totally destroyed the krell 402e in every regard. The krell sounded too "flat" when compared to this amp. This amp had amazing mirange with great detail up top. In my opinion, this amp is the best bang for the money. i loved this amp so much that i ended up buying the amp that follows below.

Pass labs 250.8: What can i say here. This is THE BEST STEREO AMP i have ever heard. This amp destroys all the amps i have listed above today to include the pass labs 350.5. It is a refined 350.5 amp. It has more 3d sound which is something the 350.5 lacked. It has a level of detail that i really have never experienced before and the bass was amazing as well. I really thought it was the most complete power amplifier i have ever heard HANDS DOWN. To me, this is a benchmark of an amplifier. This is the amp that others should be judged by. NOTHING is lacking and right now it is the #1 amplifier that i have ever owned.

My current amps are Mcintosh MC601s: i decided to give these 601s a try and they don’t disappoint. They have great detail, HUGE soundstage, MASSIVE power and great midrange/highs. The bass is great, but it is no pass labs 250.8 or 350.5. As far as looks, these are the best looking amps i have ever owned. No contest there. i gotta be honest with you all, i never bought mcintosh monos before because i wasn’t really "wowed" by the mc452, but it could have been also because at that time i was using a processor as a preamp which i no longer do. Today, i own the Mcintosh C1100 2 chassis tube preamp which sounds unbelievable. All the amps i just described above have been amps that i auditioned with the C1100 as a preamp. The MC601s sound great without a doubt, but i will say that if you are looking for THE BEST sound for the money, these would not be it. However, Mcintosh remains UNMATCHED when it comes to looks and also resale value. Every other amp above depreciates much faster than Mcintosh.

That said, my future purchase (when i can find a steal of a deal) will be the Pass labs 350.8. I am tempted to make a preliminary statement which is that i feel this amp could be THE BEST stereo amp under 30k dollars. Again, i will be able to say more and confirm once i own it. I hope this update can help you all in your buying decisions!

Ther are several threads about tektons on the forum, Chuck Miller’s has had a lot of feedback. I own Tektons, and many others do, who apparently have not found this thread. Those who have owned them seem to mostly be super impressed with them.
Keith, seems you’re a ss non believer. Lol. I guess we will have to agree to disagree on that subject
Greyhound, what you say is true. It’s subjective, and coming up with objective criteria can be difficult. The idea is to have the discussion, maybe even with just yourself, and try to come up with an answer that makes sense. I sure can’t say I have all the right answers, though I might have plenty of answers, lol. Riaa, what’s wrong with Bieber chnagi g his mind on the subject. If you had asked me two months ago, I would have said cables didn’t matter. I’ve seen wcs priorities change and his journey has progressed. If you remain open, I’m sure many of us will change our ideas, or tastes, over the years. Let’s not pigeon hole someone and back them aganst the wall because they used to like x. Or didn’t like x. If he switches back again on the subject in a few weeks, then I’d question his sincerity
This whole thread has gotten me into so much trouble, hehe. I had my arm twisted ( not really, but thank you for helping me make the plunge) to buy the Soulution 700 series stereo amp, and now after reading about synergy etc here and a recommendation  after asking a knowledge person, I’ve added the 720 preamp also. I see one of their Dacs for sale too, but not sure it can compete with the Vivaldi.
Lol, Bieber, Apple changed the spelling on me, unless apple knows that viber is really the Bieb.
Himiguel, I cannot figure out what this is you are trying to describe. I’ve tried googling the Annapurna board and find nothing. Sounds like some time of isolation device but also has a grounding block? Why would an isolation board or shelf need to be grounded? Not following your conversation here.
I was looking at some of the equipment I’ve seen other reviewers use, earthworks qt40s for the speakers, about 2200 a pair, I’d want a room mike to help capture some of the soundstage and holographic effect akG c414, about another 2300 for a pair, and then as long as I’m doing that I’d get a good mike for the vocals, many good choices there well under 1k,  and then a rode podcaster board to connect those xlr mikes to the iPad with and adjust the sound levels. I’m sure there’s many other options, that setup was just what looked and sounded  good to me without spending tens of thousands.
I just ordered one of the four tier Artesania racks that Jay liked so much for his amp, for one of my systems. I did ask if the full rack gave the same benefits as just the amp rack and they confirmed that the improvements would indeed be the same for all components placed on that rack. Just shows that Jays videos do help make decisions. I really had not thought much about racks, figured I’d order just any decently made rack, I have Salamader in my home theater, and there’s one that advertises theirs a lot on Audiogon I was also considering.
Maybe we should write one for whatever system is being used where the last videos music sucked. If we all donated a small amount to the cause, we could help replace it with an Amazon Alexa so that it would at least sound ok.
Not sure if the technique for recording has changed, but this video was by far the best of them all in terms of audio quality.
That’s strange, as I felt it was the best audio recoding in terms of quality to date.
Viber maybe I’m wrong, but thought the ulfers with all be was closer to 19-20k
Karen, it also doesn’t exclude you from being crazy, lol. I believe from the way Jay said it, that the intention is not to replace the Wilson’s, but rather to have another option at a more reasonable price point to show how that might sound. I might even add a set of Tekton double impacts at 3k if I were going to demonstrate different levels. I believe good sounding equipment can make even reasonably priced good quality speakers sound pretty sweet. Even though they would be different brands, still a good way to show the law of diminishing returns to some extent. Could show where the best places to spend are also.
I remember my first true “Hi-Fi” setup. A Sony AVR and psd speakers, four, two rears, for an early surround type setup. I was listening to law and order and was hearing police radios in the courtyard of my townhouse. I kept looking out the window,  it couldn’t see them. Took me thirty minutes to realize it was in background of the tv show that I was hearing, never heard that from the built in tv speakers. So now I love to hear things that I never heard before, in a system, as I upgrade.
I have the ulferberhts myself as mains and center in the home theater and have ordered the moabs for rears.
Dgu, which ones were ugly? Then I think the Tekton’s look good, so maybe I’m not the best judge. Smo, there’s always someone who likes something better than something else, lol.
Allvinyl, I wasn’t one who said anything about his posts, though I did feel they were a bit too much. He had gone over the details of his product a few days earlier, which was great, then he basically did it again a couple more times a few days later. Thats where I felt it was indeed a bit much. If it was new information, I get it. It didn’t bother me like it seemed to bother a few others. I always do like to learn about new products that I am not familiar with. I do see how some were a bit irked, but I didn’t see the need to be so negative about the response.
4425, we obviously can’t all travel to jays place, even if he had room for a thousand people, and listen. We make do with what we have, and we have mostly all noted that we obviously are not able to hear everything jay does in his room. Before current technology we would all have to wait for our monthly stereophile subscription to show up in the mail to get our fix in this hobby. I don’t see too many people going at each other like some threads on the forum and everyone seems to enjoy it for the most part. I for one don’t see the harm in any of that, and it allows for some nice conversations. It’s apparent many of us hear different things listening to what we hear, and I enjoy reading other peoples thoughts that differ from mine, and why.
Anyone posting on this thread should be subscribed. I actually look for new videos on here since I have all notifications off on my iPad
No guesses here, I’m patient and just enjoying the ride, wherever it takes us.
I had the Martin Logan years ago, very detailed, but a bit lifeless maybe. I heard those model Maggie’s just a few months ago at the dealer, also a vandersteen dealer, and I was very disappointed in what I heard. It was sound is about all I could say, not the clarity or detail that I had read so much about with these. Listening to your description I can only venture that they must have been very poorly set up and I’m not sure what equipment they weren’t hung them with. I was there for something else, but first time had every seen or had a chance to listen to them, so I did. Once I see where you end up, I may take another visit to that dealer and see what he’s got them set up with and try something better matched for them.
Not sure why anyone asks why something isn’t kept anymore. It seems obvious the goal is about testing new products or new combinations, not building an end goal system. I imagine that in the end, nothing is exempt from possible replacement at some point in time.
Viber, maybe you feel that way about the Maggie’s and that’s fine. We all know everyone has different preferences. I don’t think jay has given us any reason to doubt that he’s giving anything but his honest opinion during his reviews. Reviews don’t always end up with my favorites on top either. And I dont always buy products that end up on top, but I buy what I think best suits my likes. There’s no real right or wrong, it’s what’s most right for you.
Maybe I am confused about what jays post about all the amps meant and why people are posting about the amps he might be brining in. A few days ago he posted several different brands and a huge deal, I had the impression all those would be in house with this deal, to compare at the same time. If so not sure why others keep posting about his next move with amps, as the mephisto was one of them. Or could be I just misunderstood that post and doing some wishful thinking, lol.
As far as subs go for the Maggie’s, I have a set of REL model 25s, those can connect directly to the speaker connections without the need for any crossovers. If I did the Maggie’s, that’s what I would match them with in my system. Not much work involved with that, other than just moving that weight into place, but seems that’s a common occurrence in jays room anyways. No more Wilson’s, so sounds like we will see something else take their place, considering the possible landmark deal that was mentioned. I do love this journey, you never know where it will take you, so makes it much more interesting like that. Like a movie whose plot turns on a dime and you didn’t see it coming. My problem is if I try to emulate Jay, I will be divorced because I don’t get rid of equipment, and there would be no room for her. Well maybe she will say I don’t have room in my life for her if I did that, lol. Why can’t they just love you for who you are, and realize, you can’t take the money with you anyways, enjoy it while you still can.
I don’t believe he had his new better mic in use with the wilsons, it’s possible that’s part of the difference.
Many people do like bass, I am one, as long as it’s good quality bass. I have heard some very nice standmounts I wouldn’t mind owning, but they would never replace my full range speakers.
Twoleft, dire straights is where the dags stood out the most to me. The vocals on the Merrill’s seemed much less clear, almost muffled and smeared, whereas I could clearly understand each word with the dags. Also the guitar was fuller, richer, I could hear much more of each note. The one place the Merrill’s might have done better was the lows, they were a bit better defined than the dags were. Just another example how we listen to the same thing, but each hear something different. Since I play the guitar and sing, those areas I tend to notice more, though I most definitely love great bass. I love detail in general, and great detail in bass as opposed to a simple boom, is wonderful.
Hey guys, there plenty of threads like that already, let’s not turn this one into another one of those.
Actually it seems they snuck in an interior shot of a technic ser1 on that, didn’t notice that, but now makes me want to read up more on that amp.
No need for jay to void his warranty, 30 seconds with google will get you the answers you want. I was very suprised at what I saw, looks like there’s a lot more going on here than anyone expected https://www.stereo.net.au/forums/topic/259860-merrill-element-118-class-d-is-on-its-way-using-the-ne...
Ron. You’re saying that’s not how I should be doing it? With 3 systems no wonder I’m going broke quick, lol. Theres lots of things Jay COULD do. As mentioned, he would have to make it a full time job in order to do that, yet then the term job would imply that he’s being paid to do this. I’m having fun just watching it unfold as he sees fit. He seems to have his own goals for what he does, and I’m perfectly fine to let it play out as he sees fit. I’ll give my opinions on what I hear, as he has asked for us to post them on his videos. I am glad that we have all for the most part understood that we each have different ideas, and this thread has not delved into mud slinging or bashing like some threads do. It makes it so much more enjoyable we can discuss things civilly and maybe learn something new as Jay has over time, on his dime and time. It’s nice to see people with real enthusiasm for the hobby and not looking to ding someone who has different preferences than their own.
Wow, so my post got removed for asking why all the anger and animosity from someone, whose post still remains. Interesting. I don’t get it I guess.
Did I speak too soon about everyone behaving themself on this thread? Rita, it does seem like a shroom event for sure, lol. Also the sound alike we should have a 60s style lovefest, get naked and pass around the reality expanders. If nothing is exclusive and we are all connected, I’d like to see if I could get access to some bank accounts so I can keep pace with jays journey. You guys help out enough and I’ll keep them all, quit my job, and do any shootout you’d like.
I’m thinking it might still be the same percentage Ron. But maybe some will switch their preferences.
rice, if you try to kiss jay, you may have to deal with his wife.
Faxer it wouldn’t be a bad idea to start a thread on your speakers, you might have others that don’t read this thread take some interest also.
I know the boulders won’t be part of that, but will be intresting to see where it ends up.
Whatever was done on number one, dosnt need to be repeated, lol. I don’t know if it sounds way different (better) in the room, but on the video, it just didn’t work at all. Im assuming different cable combo this time. I’d go back to what was used the first time if so. And a great example of just how much effect the proper, or improper match or tweak can make, whatever the changes might be.
You’re doing systems for us to hear, not a forever system, lol. So different goals. The videos I had seen previously of the fynes did sound good
Sounds like Jay is talking about Tekton’s? I have have the Ulfers for my mains in my home theater and have a set of moabs ordered for the rears.
Viber, actually I can’t say that I know the Tekton’s well yet. I’ve heard some, but as far as my own, not yet. My warehouse is looking more like an audio store than my regular business, lol. I’m waiting until I have everything together then I’ll work on setting up multiple systems in the house.  I’m at five systems currently to set up. Just got notified that my artesania rack will arrive to the dealer from Spain on Tuesday and then ship to me after that. Still waiting on the Tekton moabs for the rears in my home theater, plus other assorted pieces. I hope jays new setup dosnt blow me mind too badly, so that I have to make changes before I’ve even heard what I have now, lol
Abedirov, if you want to reach the same depths, or further, than the alexias, add some good subs. I’ll be using the REL 25s with my sashas using line connections, which they come ready and are recommended for. I don’t believe you would find anything lacking compared to the Alexias with a similar setup. In fact I think that setup, bass wise, could compete with some Wilson’s further up the chain also. Jay, you said that about the bass with the Sashas, lol. I’m not sure when too much ( quality) bass becomes too much of a good thing, but I haven’t found it yet.
Jay has mentioned before that gryphon preamps didn’t seem to offer the same levels of performance as their amps, or even other preamps.
True techno, anyone with an iPhone and AirPods are now audiophiles. Anyone spending more than that is just stroking their ego. Ok, now that that has been decided we can all move on from this thread, and indeed the entire forum ( guys, think he will notice we are still here after this post)
Tecno, you’re just rude. No one here is intrested in it. One thing to have a real convo about something, different to insult as you have done. The rest of us would prefer you find another thread to pester. Well give you a participation ribbon for best system  in your own mind.  Y the way, jay wasn’t the one talking about bass, I was. If that’s a problem, I guess we both will just have to deca with that.
Tecno, it’s not the cables, etc. the only issue is the one guy who thinks he’s a legend in his own mind.
