My Long List of Amplifiers and My Personal Review of Each!

So I have been in a long journey looking to find the best amplifiers for my martin logan montis. As you know, the match between an amplifier and speakers has to be a good "marriage" and needs to be blend exquisitely. Right now, I think I might have found the best sounding amplifier for martin logan. I have gone through approximately 34-36 amplifiers in the past 12 months. Some of these are:

Bryston ST, SST, SST2 series
NAD M25
PARASOUND HALO
PARASOUND CLASSIC
KRELL TAS
KRELL KAV 500
KRELL CHORUS
ROTEL RMB 1095
CLASSE CT 5300
CLASSE CA 2200
CLASSE CA 5200
MCINTOSH MC 205
CARY AUDIO CINEMA 7
OUTLAW AUDIO 755
LEXICON RX7
PASS LABS XA 30.8
BUTLER AUDIO 5150
ATI SIGNATURE SERIES 6005

With all that said, the amplifiers I mentioned above are the ones that in my opinion are worth mentioning. To make a long story short, there is NO 5 CHANNEL POWER AMP that sounds as good as a 3ch and 2ch amplifier combination. i have done both experiments and the truth is that YOU DO lose details and more channel separation, etc when you select a 5 channel power amplifier of any manufacturer.
My recollection of what each amp sounded like is as follows:

ATI SIGNATURE SERIES 6005 (great power and amazing soundstage. Very low noise floor, BUT this amplifiers NEEDS TO BE cranked up in order to fully enjoy it. If you like listening at low volume levels or somewhat moderate, you are wasting your time here. This amp won’t sound any different than many other brands out there at this volume. The bass is great, good highs although they are a bit bright for my taste)

NAD M25 (very smooth, powerful, but somewhat thin sounding as far as bass goes)
Bryston sst2(detailed, good soundstage, good power, but can be a little forward with certain speakers which could make them ear fatiguing at loud volumes)

Krell (fast sounding, nice bass attack, nice highs, but some detail does get lost with certain speakers)

rotel (good amp for the money, but too bright in my opinion)

cary audio (good sound overall, very musical, but it didn’t have enough oomph)

parasound halo (good detail, great bass, but it still holds back some background detail that i can hear in others)

lexicon (very laid back and smooth. huge power, but if you like more detail or crisper highs, this amp will disappoint you)

McIntosh mc205 (probably the worst multichannel amp given its price point. it was too thin sounding, had detail but lacked bass.

butler audio (good amplifier. very warm and smooth sweet sounding. i think for the money, this is a better amp than the parasound a51)

pass labs (very VERY musical with excellent bass control. You can listen to this for hours and hours without getting ear fatigue. however, it DOES NOT do well in home theater applications if all you have is a 2 channel set up for movies. The midrange gets somewhat "muddy" or very weak sounding that you find yourself trying to turn it up.

classe audio (best amplifier for multi channel applications. i simply COULDNT FIND a better multi channel amplifier PERIOD. IT has amazing smoothness, amazing power and good bass control although i would say krell has much better bass control)

Update: The reviews above were done in January 2015. Below is my newest update as of October 2016:

PS AUDIO BHK 300 MONOBLOCKS: Amazing amps. Tons of detail and really amazing midrange. the bass is amazing too, but the one thing i will say is that those of you with speakers efficiency of 87db and below you will not have all the "loudness" that you may want from time to time. These amps go into protection mode when using a speaker such as the Salon, but only at very loud levels. Maybe 97db and above. If you don’t listen to extreme crazy levels, these amps will please you in every way.

Plinius Odeon 7 channel amp: This is THE BEST multichannel amp i have ever owned. Far , but FAR SUPERIOR to any other multichannel amp i have owned. In my opinion it destroyed all of the multichannel amps i mentioned above and below. The Odeon is an amp that is in a different tier group and it is in a league of its own. Amazing bass, treble and it made my center channel sound more articulate than ever before. The voices where never scrambled with the action scenes. It just separated everything very nicely.

Theta Dreadnaught D: Good detailed amp. Looks very elegant, has a pleasant sound, but i found it a tad too bright for my taste. I thought it was also somewhat "thin" sounding lacking body to the music. could be that it is because it is class d?

Krell Duo 300: Good amp. Nice and detailed with enough power to handle most speakers out there. I found that it does have a very nice "3d" sound through my electrostatics. Nothing to fault here on this amp.
Mark Levinson 532H: Great 2 channel amp. Lots of detail, amazing midrange which is what Mark Levinson is known for. It sounds very holographic and will please those of you looking for more detail and a better midrange. As far as bass, it is there, but it is not going to give you the slam of a pass labs 350.5 or JC1s for example. It is great for those that appreciate classical music, instrumental, etc, but not those of you who love tons of deep bass.

 It is articulate sounding too
Krell 7200: Plenty of detail and enough power for most people. i found that my rear speakers contained more information after installed this amp. One thing that i hated is that you must use xlr cables with this amp or else you lose most of its sound performance when using RCA’s.

Krell 402e: Great amp. Very powerful and will handle any speaker you wish. Power is incredible and with great detail. That said, i didn’t get all the bass that most reviewers mentioned. I thought it was "ok" in regards to bass. It was there, but it didn’t slam me to my listening chair.

Bryston 4B3: Good amp with a complete sound. I think this amp is more laid back than the SST2 version. I think those of you who found the SST2 version of this amp a little too forward with your speakers will definitely benefit from this amp’s warmth. Bryston has gone towards the "warm" side in my opinion with their new SST3 series. As always, they are built like tanks. I wouldn’t call this amp tube-like, but rather closer to what the classe audio delta 2 series sound like which is on the warm side of things.

Parasound JC1s: Good powerful amps. Amazing low end punch (far superior bass than the 402e). This amp is the amp that i consider complete from top to bottom in regards to sound. Nothing is lacking other than perhaps a nicer chassis. Parasound needs to rework their external appearance when they introduce new amps. This amp would sell much more if it had a revised external appearance because the sound is a great bang for the money. It made my 800 Nautilus scream and slam. Again, amazing low end punch.

Simaudio W7: Good detailed amp. This amp reminds me a lot of the Mark Levinson 532h. Great detail and very articulate. I think this amp will go well with bookshelves that are ported in order to compensate for what it lacks when it comes to the bass. That doesn’t mean it has no bass, but when it is no Parasound JC1 either.
Pass labs 350.5: Wow, where do i begin? maybe my first time around with the xa30.8 wasn’t as special as it was with this monster 350.5. It is just SPECTACULAR sounding with my electrostatics. The bass was THE BEST BASS i have ever heard from ANY amp period. The only amp that comes close would be the jC1s. It made me check my settings to make sure the bass was not boosted and kept making my jaw drop each time i heard it. It totally destroyed the krell 402e in every regard. The krell sounded too "flat" when compared to this amp. This amp had amazing mirange with great detail up top. In my opinion, this amp is the best bang for the money. i loved this amp so much that i ended up buying the amp that follows below.

Pass labs 250.8: What can i say here. This is THE BEST STEREO AMP i have ever heard. This amp destroys all the amps i have listed above today to include the pass labs 350.5. It is a refined 350.5 amp. It has more 3d sound which is something the 350.5 lacked. It has a level of detail that i really have never experienced before and the bass was amazing as well. I really thought it was the most complete power amplifier i have ever heard HANDS DOWN. To me, this is a benchmark of an amplifier. This is the amp that others should be judged by. NOTHING is lacking and right now it is the #1 amplifier that i have ever owned.

My current amps are Mcintosh MC601s: i decided to give these 601s a try and they don’t disappoint. They have great detail, HUGE soundstage, MASSIVE power and great midrange/highs. The bass is great, but it is no pass labs 250.8 or 350.5. As far as looks, these are the best looking amps i have ever owned. No contest there. i gotta be honest with you all, i never bought mcintosh monos before because i wasn’t really "wowed" by the mc452, but it could have been also because at that time i was using a processor as a preamp which i no longer do. Today, i own the Mcintosh C1100 2 chassis tube preamp which sounds unbelievable. All the amps i just described above have been amps that i auditioned with the C1100 as a preamp. The MC601s sound great without a doubt, but i will say that if you are looking for THE BEST sound for the money, these would not be it. However, Mcintosh remains UNMATCHED when it comes to looks and also resale value. Every other amp above depreciates much faster than Mcintosh.

That said, my future purchase (when i can find a steal of a deal) will be the Pass labs 350.8. I am tempted to make a preliminary statement which is that i feel this amp could be THE BEST stereo amp under 30k dollars. Again, i will be able to say more and confirm once i own it. I hope this update can help you all in your buying decisions!

Folks

Since I’ve released my last two 2500 videos, I’ve already sold one and two of the manufacturers (who i don’t represent) showcased on my channel have inquired and want to bring a stromtank unit into their facilities in order to evaluate it in their controlled sound rooms .

I don’t want to give out too much information, but yes my efforts are clearly being heard via YouTube and I’ve gotten incredible feedback from people in the industry about the performance of my system since I introduced the s2500.

You all realize a lot of brands follow me right? I just don't wanna be vocal about it but yes a lot of eyes are on me because I do what nobody does which is to display the ultra high end.

I can’t believe this entire time we have been talking to a guy who disguises himself!

Man - talk about deception and not being 100% REAL. I’M DONE TALKING TO HIM!

@viber6

I’m taking off my gloves and lending them to you. Go ahead and punch it out ✊👊 with him. You just got a boat load of ammunition from @thyname !!!!

@thyname - i appreciate this!!! I wish you had been here before !

I have tried quite a few power conditioners and to be sincere, most of them end up forcing you to buy their powercords or else the benefits aren’t maximized.

I have had a puritan labs 156 in the box, new and sealed for about 4 months. I intended to try it but then i became a stromtank dealer didn’t get to try it.

I am not saying power conditioners aren’t worth it, but i hate having to buy more PCs to make them work.

For msb, i like stromtank and audioquest Niagara 5000. For small watt amps, I’d say shunyata omega. The synergistic research Powercell is good but best if used with a full loom of their cables.

Ps audio p20 gets smoked by shunyata Denali V1 which is their older . model....

@cleeds

You should call each power conditioner brand and ask them ? Then arrive at your own conclusions... Nobody has answers for everything. There’s no such thing.

  • Why do powercords change the sound ?
  • Why do footers make a difference?
  • Why does a fuse change the sound ?
  • Why are cable lifters important?

The thing is today's topic is focused on the stromtank but don't forget about the topics above. Some things can't be explained folks and I'm shocked that this hasn't been  somewhat"accepted". Also, I'm VERY SURPRISED TOO that most people who spend hours pondering 🤔 and questioning are folks who aren't even buying any of this to begin with.

It's like me worrying about the neighbors Tesla Plaid that destroys supercars and me saying " the Tesla Plaid sucks because it can't drift and it doesn't have an exhaust note so i don't feel connected with the vehicle or that it is way too quiet , etc etc ". WHY would I care THAT MUCH if i know I'm not buying one or have money to do so??? It's like spending braincells on stupid stuff...i don't understand it.

The world would be better if we had answers for everything but hell we are STILL trying to figure out how DB COOPER jumped off a plane with $200k in cash and never got caught.

Bottom line is most dedicated lines only provide a direct path of electricity to your gear from the breaker box. They don't really do sh!t else folks. Let's keep it real.

You still need money for great power conditioners and the hustle of top end Powercords. I'm determined to eventually not rely on expensive crazy powercords. This doesn't mean I'll be using crappy PCs on power amps but I'm done spending 30gs on PCs. The stromtank, for me, leaves me happy and not changing stupid powercord. Yes i still have powercords laying around and collecting dust but I'm gonna list a lot of them soon.

I will say screw measurements soon and just unplug my system from the stromtank and then plug it into the wall outlets... The brain will let you hear the changes rather easy

The system is performing at such a high level that it is scary. Some suggested for tubes to be added and others want a turntable in order to see what happens.

If i add tubes, we compromise ultimate transparency and if i add a turntable then some might be against the "popping" sounds and prefer the extreme cleanliness of digital formats.

You all see what I mean? It’s a tough balancing act, but if what you want is ultimate transparency and the absolute honesty, this system has it in spades. It simply can not lie to your ears. Some people criticize the system based on the music which i understand 100% but very few folks pump the brakes and question the song.

Is it the song that sounds metallic?🤔

Is it bright because it is classic rock?

Why does my car stereo sound better when using serious XM?

Most of the music we are used to hearing is optimized to sound great on average systems but an ultra revealing system isn’t going to follow those footsteps. You are paying to "decode" everything that normal systems can’t do; the small nuances, extra bells and whistles in the recording that are left behind.

If you are seeking for a carbon copy of the sound produced by average systems but with more salt and pepper, yes this system doesn’t take you there. That said, one thing i can tell you all is that once you get used to this system and you listen to a less revealing system, your ears will absolutely let you know that you are listening to an inferior presentation. It’s as if your brain let’s you know that there is a lot of stuff missing. The closer we get to the source, the more we expose in the recording but some may not want to hear all recordings for what they are.

5 dedicated lines... 30a, 30a, 20a, 20a, 30a(220v)

All with 10 gauge wire and aftermarket outlets.

Hi everyone

So since we have been discussing the stromtank for quite sometime, i would like pause for a moment and talk about something we've never EVER talked about before: streaming content.

I have been communicating with a top audio industry expert who brought to my attention something quite interesting. I am copying and pasting and what i want is to hear your thoughts on this subject. This has been an eye opener for me and could totally change my perspective with regards to streaming going forward.

"Streaming quality is inferior to playing files from a HD, and it is always changing based on your current bandwidth. You just never know what kind of compression you are actually listening to (it does not matter what Qobuz telling you about the quality, it is passed their control - think about the times you see Netflix/amazon and the quality changes) . A lot of the comments you get about “sterility” is due to that. You spend a fortune, not to mention precious time, assembling an incredible system, why would you compromise the sound right at the source?"

This comment above kinda slapped me in the face and it's now definitely going to make me change a few things going forward. Please comment !

When I tell you he is an industry expert, he is... His system and room are probably 2.5 million dollars.... Believe me, this isn’t coming from an internet forum member...

He is as serious as a heart attack... Owns magico M9 speakers...

@cleeds

"It’s pretty clear you have some AC problems here. That certainly explains your interest in battery solutions."

Ugh...i was to go off right now but let me keep my cool...can one of the ac experts on here explain to him how you can you use s regular outlet on a 220v 30a... 🥺

I don't have time for this nonsense and i know there are a ton of electrical gurus because I see their posts occasionally.

Much appreciated if someone can.

The above video is with a cold stromtank that was literally powdered on and components were plugged right after it. Zero time for the stromtank to stabilize its internal electronics.

I am still waiting on the cartridge and that’s why no turntable has been showcased.

Pretty soon we will be able to enjoy one of the best shootouts on my channel folks.

Thank you to everyone that’s helped make this a reality. There might be a special guest show up on my channel around October. He is a well known reviewer who will be coming to judge my system! (Oh oh 😂)

Music server and dac.

The 3010 and 3060 don’t need any help. Those you can connect with an orange Home Depot extension cord and plug them into your bathroom outlet or the outlet you use to power your Christmas tree in December.

If i didn’t have them, I’d plug in the linestage in stromtank too.

Things such as clocks, transports, CD players, turntables and phono stage should be plugged into the stromtank. I just don't happen to have a system that has those components.

Coming tonight:

Dsd music makes an appearance on my channel for the first time.

"Clarity" that others say it’s too bright and in your face ? Interesting 🤔... We can’t please everyone lol and then I'm being told it's more analog now but you claim it's veiled....we definitely do not hear the same and now we know why the audio industry will continue to move forward and continue to push out all sorts of products.  This is certainly a subjective hobby where there is no clear definition as to what is the standard and what isn't when it comes to sound reproduction.

At least in the Olympics we know that we are being scored and have records to break so we know what we are aiming for and everyone is clear on what they need to pursue but not it's not that way in this hobby.

I'm glad i am in a position to share everything in my lab 😀

Why is this system the best system I have ever had in the room?

Find out today... PLUS, SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT at the end of today's video!

My plan is to have the most natural and organic interview. He's never done an interview with a YouTuber (haven't seen one) and i want to be sure he's comfortable. I want to learn more about what it takes to build a speaker: how many man hours? Is there any voicing involved? What challenges does he face with materials that we don't know about?  Which speaker has been the most difficult to design? Q7? M6? Why ?

Why did he create the A series? What does he have at home ? Which is his preferred speaker ? And of course, i plan to be in front of the M9s and hopefully record videos from inside the room. It will be the most expensive speaker i have ever been in front of so I'm absolutely excited to say the least because I don't know what that level of a speaker brings to the table.

More to come!

@carey1110

And because this is the most popular thread, i will implement damage control. If i feel the thread begins to get derailed and it’s a constant confrontation, i will just message the moderators and let them know. They will warn the perpetrators directly and give them a warning. I have to be more diplomatic and use the resources available to me. I won’t wrestle anymore. I am done doing that.

In an effort to get this thread on track,

I am going to be posting a video today using gryphon vanta speaker cables. I inserted them 3 days ago so they are settled in. I want you all to hear the difference in tonality when comparing to transparent opus.

One particular subject that isn’t talked about here is HOW MUCH CLARITY is too much of a good thing?

Here’s food for thought: if i use a full transparent loom, the clarity is incredible BUT if you crank things up, it doesn’t lead to long listening sessions. That said, the extreme clarity is amazing at low volume levels as well as under moderate levels.

There is always the question of the Network boxes that these cables have which could be interacting with Boulder (cables are tuned for Boulder and msb). I am in search of a full loom of cables at half the price of transparent opus without boxes

It’s a HUUUUGE balancing act that one needs to address and decide on. Anyhow, I’ll post a video shortly.

@cleeds

I’d appreciate it if you don’t address me. You and i have our differences and i don’t want to start a fire. You appeared out of nowhere and since you showed up, you have been argumental. You love to quote others and debate them each and every time. I’m not getting caught in that with you. I got better things to do. Thank you

Respectfully - Jay

Leave me your thoughts on this last video. There's ZERO AFTERMARKET POWERCORDS. All running through stromtank with the exceptions being  Boulder 3010 and 3060.

Gryphon Vanta Series Speaker Cables are fully settled and i think they are doing some good things. Let me know what you guys hear.

This last presentation is more relaxed , looong listening sessions, all the bass is there and bigger soundstage than with opus speaker cables. I believe the opus powercords pin point the source and they let you know that you are playing digital. That is not the case with the Gryphon vanta speaker cables. You forget about the source with these cables. To regain more clarity, we can insert opus PC in the music server and maybe the dac again.

Just inserted opus PCs on the dac

  1. More clarity
  2. About the same bass as stock PCs
  3. A Little more imaging
  4. Tweeter seems a little more extended
  5. Less ability to crank up the volume due to too much happening at once

82db = average listening levels for me. Once I go above that,  sheer clarity gets to be punishing.

I appreciate the offer. I have no reason to not believe you. Just remember that each of our journeys is different and in order to truly know how good a system is, one needs to have something else to compare it to and i don’t mean via YouTube. Most folks don’t get out of their homes because of personal reasons but this also limits their knowledge and exposure of other great systems.

Have ANY OF YOU ever noticed i don’t compare my system to any of your systems? HAS ANYONE HERE EVER EVEN STOPPED TO THINK WHY? 🤔

On the other hand, there are many people with YouTube channels comparing their system to mine (let’s not go there) and i suppose it is an honor to be used as the "measuring stick " by some. But seriously, I’d like for ANYONE here to answer the question above.... HOPEFULLY at least ONE PERSON here understands why i don’t do such thing.

Nah... It could be said that most of us listen alone or with the cat and dog because for the most part women don't have any interest in discovering how the sound changes with footers or cables lol.

And we don't have transparent opus speaker cables inserted...then this begs the question: do we need the $40,000 cables in the system when the powercords are doing an exceptional job at creating tons of resolution and clarity? I am torn here and may need to go back and forth but if I'm looking to save some money I'd say stick to a quality speaker cable and use opus powercords.

In my members only section of my website, i will go more in depth as to what the opus speaker cables are doing and how the Boulder 3060 interacts with them.

I am working on the 3010 is 2110 raw footage as well and my raw uncut opinion on which preamp to get and why.

The website is almost there guys. It's SO MUCH WORK!

Stay tuned !

It’s so clear to me that most folks on here aren’t interested in hearing from the "gurus" or "crusaders" who preach HARD on here yet they don’t even have a system listed on their profile. That’s like me going into a Mercedes-Benz dealership and criticize the prices of these vehicles yet little do they know that i took the bus to get to the dealer...

Some people want to eat caviar but pay beef jerky prices. Some others want to drive a Mercedes Benz S class but want to pay Hyundai prices. If they can’t afford the caviar or Mercedes S class, they have crucify those who have the means to buy either as well as lecture the masses how stupid it is to pay so much money for a car or caviar.

Maybe i should join a Ferrari forum and tell them that i know of  a faster car for less money and save them from paying expensive vehicle maintenance?

Hmmm 🤔 i wonder how that would work out for me once they find out i drive a Ford...

Alright folks

Give me your selection from the video above. Which presentation did you like best ?

My lines are dedicated lines...coming from the panel box inside the house and the ac system is connected on the panel outside the house. I don't understand this narrative that i have compromised outlets. I have 5 dedicated outlets with 10 gauge wire and aftermarket outlets. 20a, 20a, 30a, 30a, 30a-220v.

I’m no electrician... I leave that to the pros. I pull out my wallet and pay the pros to do the work that the manufacturers recommend.

It’s simple: pay a dude to run wires from your circuit breaker directly into your room. This isn’t rocket science. Grab one stupid end of a thick wire and plug it into the breaker panel and run the stupid ass wire through the wall and make it come out through a hole in the wall and then grab a decent outlet and connect the wire into the outlet. Lastly, make sure the outlets are in phase so there is no bass cancellation issues.

Let’s not make this job complicated folks:

  • Go to home Depot and buy thick wire and 20a breaker
  • Buy aftermarket outlet of choice
  • Find a dude on Angie’s list that does electrical work
  • Have the dude run the wire you bought at home Depot from your breaker all the way to your desired location
  • Pay the dude the money agreed upon for the job
  • Plug in your electronics into the new outlet
  • Grab a drink and chill.

Step by step how to do dedicated lines for your system. I believe my 6 year old can understand how to do the job too.

Now I’m anxiously waiting for the bashing to commence by the electrical gurus that lurk on here.

Oh yea - stromtank still embarrasses any dumb dedicated lines. Just wait until i drop the video of a guy who i sold a STROMTANK to and how his system has transformed even more than the $15,000 dollars he paid to some electrical gurus who supposedly also did Michael Fremers electrical work.  Just wait and see...

The proof is in the pudding so just wait and see...
