My Long List of Amplifiers and My Personal Review of Each!

So I have been in a long journey looking to find the best amplifiers for my martin logan montis. As you know, the match between an amplifier and speakers has to be a good "marriage" and needs to be blend exquisitely. Right now, I think I might have found the best sounding amplifier for martin logan. I have gone through approximately 34-36 amplifiers in the past 12 months. Some of these are:

Bryston ST, SST, SST2 series
NAD M25
PARASOUND HALO
PARASOUND CLASSIC
KRELL TAS
KRELL KAV 500
KRELL CHORUS
ROTEL RMB 1095
CLASSE CT 5300
CLASSE CA 2200
CLASSE CA 5200
MCINTOSH MC 205
CARY AUDIO CINEMA 7
OUTLAW AUDIO 755
LEXICON RX7
PASS LABS XA 30.8
BUTLER AUDIO 5150
ATI SIGNATURE SERIES 6005

With all that said, the amplifiers I mentioned above are the ones that in my opinion are worth mentioning. To make a long story short, there is NO 5 CHANNEL POWER AMP that sounds as good as a 3ch and 2ch amplifier combination. i have done both experiments and the truth is that YOU DO lose details and more channel separation,etc when you select a 5 channel power amplifier of any manufacturer.
My recollection of what each amp sounded like is as follows:

ATI SIGNATURE SERIES 6005 (great power and amazing soundstage. Very low noise floor, BUT this amplifiers NEEDS TO BE cranked up in order to fully enjoy it. If you like listening at low volume levels or somewhat moderate, you are wasting your time here. This amp won’t sound any different than many other brands out there at this volume. The bass is great, good highs although they are a bit bright for my taste)

NAD M25 (very smooth, powerful, but somewhat thin sounding as far as bass goes)
Bryston sst2(detailed, good soundstage, good power, but can be a little forward with certain speakers which could make them ear fatiguing at loud volumes)

Krell (fast sounding, nice bass attack, nice highs, but some detail does get lost with certain speakers)

rotel (good amp for the money, but too bright in my opinion)

cary audio (good sound overall, very musical, but it didn’t have enough oomph)

parasound halo (good detail, great bass, but it still holds back some background detail that i can hear in others)

lexicon (very laid back and smooth. huge power, but if you like more detail or crisper highs, this amp will disappoint you)

McIntosh mc205 (probably the worst multichannel amp given its price point. it was too thin sounding, had detail but lacked bass.

butler audio (good amplifier. very warm and smooth sweet sounding. i think for the money, this is a better amp than the parasound a51)

pass labs (very VERY musical with excellent bass control. You can listen to this for hours and hours without getting ear fatigue. however, it DOES NOT do well in home theater applications if all you have is a 2 channel set up for movies. The midrange gets somewhat "muddy" or very weak sounding that you find yourself trying to turn it up.

classe audio (best amplifier for multi channel applications. i simply COULDNT FIND a better multi channel amplifier PERIOD. IT has amazing smoothness, amazing power and good bass control although i would say krell has much better bass control)

Update: The reviews above were done in January 2015. Below is my newest update as of October 2016:

PS AUDIO BHK 300 MONOBLOCKS: Amazing amps. Tons of detail and really amazing midrange. the bass is amazing too, but the one thing i will say is that those of you with speakers efficiency of 87db and below you will not have all the "loudness" that you may want from time to time. These amps go into protection mode when using a speaker such as the Salon, but only at very loud levels. Maybe 97db and above. If you don’t listen to extreme crazy levels, these amps will please you in every way.

Plinius Odeon 7 channel amp: This is THE BEST multichannel amp i have ever owned. Far , but FAR SUPERIOR to any other multichannel amp i have owned. In my opinion it destroyed all of the multichannel amps i mentioned above and below. The Odeon is an amp that is in a different tier group and it is in a league of its own. Amazing bass, treble and it made my center channel sound more articulate than ever before. The voices where never scrambled with the action scenes. It just separated everything very nicely.

Theta Dreadnaught D: Good detailed amp. Looks very elegant, has a pleasant sound, but i found it a tad too bright for my taste. I thought it was also somewhat "thin" sounding lacking body to the music. could be that it is because it is class d?

Krell Duo 300: Good amp. Nice and detailed with enough power to handle most speakers out there. I found that it does have a very nice "3d" sound through my electrostatics. Nothing to fault here on this amp.
Mark Levinson 532H: Great 2 channel amp. Lots of detail, amazing midrange which is what Mark Levinson is known for. It sounds very holographic and will please those of you looking for more detail and a better midrange. As far as bass, it is there, but it is not going to give you the slam of a pass labs 350.5 or JC1s for example. It is great for those that appreciate classical music, instrumental, etc, but not those of you who love tons of deep bass.

 It is articulate sounding too
Krell 7200: Plenty of detail and enough power for most people. i found that my rear speakers contained more information after installed this amp. One thing that i hated is that you must use xlr cables with this amp or else you lose most of its sound performance when using RCA’s.

Krell 402e: Great amp. Very powerful and will handle any speaker you wish. Power is incredible and with great detail. That said, i didn’t get all the bass that most reviewers mentioned. I thought it was "ok" in regards to bass. It was there, but it didn’t slam me to my listening chair.

Bryston 4B3: Good amp with a complete sound. I think this amp is more laid back than the SST2 version. I think those of you who found the SST2 version of this amp a little too forward with your speakers will definitely benefit from this amp’s warmth. Bryston has gone towards the "warm" side in my opinion with their new SST3 series. As always, they are built like tanks. I wouldn’t call this amp tube-like, but rather closer to what the classe audio delta 2 series sound like which is on the warm side of things.

Parasound JC1s: Good powerful amps. Amazing low end punch (far superior bass than the 402e). This amp is the amp that i consider complete from top to bottom in regards to sound. Nothing is lacking other than perhaps a nicer chassis. Parasound needs to rework their external appearance when they introduce new amps. This amp would sell much more if it had a revised external appearance because the sound is a great bang for the money. It made my 800 Nautilus scream and slam. Again, amazing low end punch.

Simaudio W7: Good detailed amp. This amp reminds me a lot of the Mark Levinson 532h. Great detail and very articulate. I think this amp will go well with bookshelves that are ported in order to compensate for what it lacks when it comes to the bass. That doesn’t mean it has no bass, but when it is no Parasound JC1 either.
Pass labs 350.5: Wow, where do i begin? maybe my first time around with the xa30.8 wasn’t as special as it was with this monster 350.5. It is just SPECTACULAR sounding with my electrostatics. The bass was THE BEST BASS i have ever heard from ANY amp period. The only amp that comes close would be the jC1s. It made me check my settings to make sure the bass was not boosted and kept making my jaw drop each time i heard it. It totally destroyed the krell 402e in every regard. The krell sounded too "flat" when compared to this amp. This amp had amazing mirange with great detail up top. In my opinion, this amp is the best bang for the money. i loved this amp so much that i ended up buying the amp that follows below.

Pass labs 250.8: What can i say here. This is THE BEST STEREO AMP i have ever heard. This amp destroys all the amps i have listed above today to include the pass labs 350.5. It is a refined 350.5 amp. It has more 3d sound which is something the 350.5 lacked. It has a level of detail that i really have never experienced before and the bass was amazing as well. I really thought it was the most complete power amplifier i have ever heard HANDS DOWN. To me, this is a benchmark of an amplifier. This is the amp that others should be judged by. NOTHING is lacking and right now it is the #1 amplifier that i have ever owned.

My current amps are Mcintosh MC601s: i decided to give these 601s a try and they don’t disappoint. They have great detail, HUGE soundstage, MASSIVE power and great midrange/highs. The bass is great, but it is no pass labs 250.8 or 350.5. As far as looks, these are the best looking amps i have ever owned. No contest there. i gotta be honest with you all, i never bought mcintosh monos before because i wasn’t really "wowed" by the mc452, but it could have been also because at that time i was using a processor as a preamp which i no longer do. Today, i own the Mcintosh C1100 2 chassis tube preamp which sounds unbelievable. All the amps i just described above have been amps that i auditioned with the C1100 as a preamp. The MC601s sound great without a doubt, but i will say that if you are looking for THE BEST sound for the money, these would not be it. However, Mcintosh remains UNMATCHED when it comes to looks and also resale value. Every other amp above depreciates much faster than Mcintosh.

That said, my future purchase (when i can find a steal of a deal) will be the Pass labs 350.8. I am tempted to make a preliminary statement which is that i feel this amp could be THE BEST stereo amp under 30k dollars. Again, i will be able to say more and confirm once i own it. I hope this update can help you all in your buying decisions!

@clearthink

Come at me with respect and I will do the same. I stay in my lane and you stay in yours. Yes this is a public thread but I’m by no means going to allow disrespect towards me and all the work I’ve put it throughout the years. You don’t have to agree with anything I say here and I am ok with it but you can close out of this thread. This is THE LONGEST RUNNING THREAD in the history of this site for a reason. It’s not a coincidence. If this thread sucked, it would have died years ago.

People want to see my madness which is why they keep tuning in. NOBODY ELSE IS DOING WHAT I AM DOING ON ANY SITE OR ON YOUTUBE - SORRY I KNOW THAT HURTS. There aren’t many people who want to go through millions of dollars in gear and post about it on here and on YouTube. It’s not easy work and not for everyone. If you hate what I do, you'll have a full-time job with me.

@clearthink

A few things:

  1. You can LEAVE and find another thread that suits your needs since you have your opinion of my practices and body of work throughout the years long before I decided to stop feeding dealers sales.
  2. You think there is a line of folks outside waiting to buy stromtanks and 9,000 dollar artesania audio stands which I AM A DEALER FOR?
  3. In case you have Stevie wonder’s eye sight and have not seen my channel, I play with the ultra high end. These pieces don’t fly off the shelves.
  4. Any idea how many folks that READ this thread have actually bought anything from me? Here’s a fact: LESS THAN 5!!

And WHO ARE YOU? You haven’t been contributing a thing here so you are a ghost to me and of course you only open your mouth to say something negative. Typical behavior of those who come in here to disrupt and then walk out.

Lastly, I find it interesting that all these individuals who love to come in here RANDOMLY without EVER EVER having said a word before have the audacity to never say a thing to me in person. I don’t hide, I am not a forum crusader that simply types all day long and throw rocks at others. I step out, I go to shows.

And no this isn’t bullying, this is me talking with cojones and addressing the stupidity.

Respect is earned and I’ve been the one who’s spent the money, driven hours and thousands of miles, herniated my back while nobody else does anything remotely close to what I do. I do all the leg work here. Yes it infuriates me when garbage talkers start crap and they don’t even have pictures of their system. Check yourself before you come check me. Before you talk smack about your neighbor with the Lambo and Ferrari, open your hand and check your key fob - does it say Hyundai or Toyota?

@rbach

Thanks for the comment above.

I can’t keep these random perpetrators away from the thread on my own. You all know that those who have been with me from the beginning are always appreciated and have a second home in my home. let’s not allow this thread to be dismantled by unimportant characters who haven’t been putting in the work you all have done to keep this alive.

@zprr

Thanks for articulating things better than I did. Some folks just love feeling "heard" even if they don’t have much to say.

Someone told me once: "don’t wrestle with pigs because all they want is for you to jump in the mud with them"

Sometimes my passion drags me in the mud and well you all see what ends up happening. I don’t like having to "go off" but if I don’t 🛑 stop it dead in its tracks, it can get exponentially worse and then this becomes a pig farm.

I ask ANYONE who is sitting on the sidelines and who IS NOT a contributor or who has never been part of this thread throughout the years to come at me respectfully. I don’t appreciate narratives or disrespect when I’ve never seen you collaborate on here. If I know you have been a regular on here, I know when you’re being sarcastic or simply joking but if I don’t know you, it’s best to present yourself first and respectfully share your thoughts.

Jay

They were good speakers but you can't play them loud. The drivers can't take a beating.

@clearthink

It’s clear that your views or sentiments about what we have built here throughout the years doesn’t suit your taste buds. Nothing wrong with that, but if it’s clear your views aren’t appreciated here (see comments above this one), why are you here? Isn’t better to go find something that aligns with your beliefs?

I don’t know how much more subtle I can be with this particular post to let you know what should be the obvious.

I got nothing against the look. I really want to like that speaker brand but man they haven't connected with me at shows. They don't quite reel me in.

There is crazy echo in that room... How can they sound any good with a room like that??

Well, I just inserted 3 transparent opus power cords in my system. One for the 3010, one for the music server and one for the qsource power supply. My intent: to finish off the entire system with a full loom of transparent. That said, hmm 🤔 the system went backwards with some songs.

What PCs did I remove? I removed the audioquest dragon from the 3010, shunyata omega QRS from music server and nordost Odin 1 from qsource.

I know my system takes 2-3 days to show me what a cable added or substracted. Cold cables (those that haven't been used in a few days) sound warmer or less detailed when first inserted in the system but they come around a few days later.

Let's see if the system comes back around by Friday. I think I had it extremely dialed in and I was just trying to finish with the cable loom. I'll keep you guys posted.

On a different topic, I received some footers from a manufacturer that reached out to me and I plan to use them under the dac and music server (one component at a time) and let's see what the system does (maybe do this over the weekend)

Lastly, per Boulder instructions, I separated the power supply of the 3010 and placed it far away. Boulder claims that the sound improves and I have to agree.

Lots of stuff happening guys.

@keithr

Thank you

The thing with "musical" traits is that I've been there , done that... If I wanted musicality, I'd bring sonus Faber Aida and arc 750se with ref10 preamp and I'm done. My issue is that everything sounds the same with tubes plus Mephisto monos pretty much smoked my VAC set up (most people agreed).

I'm completely submersed in highly revealing presentations right now. Yes, of course I will eventually change something but there are many different things I've been doing behind the scenes in video form which will be exclusive content for my members only section on my website (coming soon).

I'll be transparent here before anywhere else, there is the possibility of me bringing a vivid audio speaker but I don't have space and I can't sell the s7 without trying something else and being convinced that I prefer it over my S7.

Today , I'm recording content for my members where I'll be showing the new footers I'm evaluating. Maybe next week I'll be recording content with vivid audios in my room next week?

Lastly, musicality is cool and all but everything sounds the same man...

Ok folks,

Which presentation did you like and why? I want to hear from all of you .

Interesting guys. I thought I'd have more collaboration in here with regards to which presentation sounded best to your ears.

@thezaks

"The only alternative I can think of is something where WC can charge monthly for the high resolution files. "

BINGO...You nailed it... 😃

@thezaks

I appreciate the comment above. Unfortunately, some people simply won’t understand that. They want to walk through life only looking out for themselves.

I know some folks don’t give a damn about the work i put in (which is fine) and if it were up to them, I’d be their slave doing this 24/7 for free and THEY’D STILL COMPLAIN.

I don’t have time to do community service for the masses...there’s only 24hrs in a day and i have to do what moves the needles for me and my family. A man that can’t comprehend that should not be on here reading anything I’m typing daily and that’s not someone I’d want to talk to anyhow. Only those men with families, spouses , REAL BILLS would be the ones that understand me.

Breaking news

I hope to be wrong, but I suspect we’ve seen the last of KRELL. It’s painful to see this American brand like this. When I think of the 80s and 90s era of amps, i think of KRELL - NOT McIntosh.

If I had the capital , I’d love to resuscitate a brand like this. KRELL Is what put big powerful class A amps on the map. It’s like a big Ford F350 or Ford Mustang. You can’t get more American than that.

For those of you who may not know, i wasn’t born in this country and yet i was in the Army at the age of 17. I’m very Patriotic and it gets to me to see this happening.

Competition is real in all aspects of life. The internet has made competition a worldwide force in which only the strongest survive - survival of the fittest - as they say.

Absolutely. The 3010 and 2110 are similar. Neither cares for a powercord. The stromtank elevates the 2110 even more but I’m not sure on the 3010 yet. The stromtank brings the 2110 performance awfully close to the 3010 though.

The stromtank review from stereophile talks about something similar. He said it brought his dag preamp very close in performance to the battery operated dartzeel.

"plus the Puritan line filter would be way, way better than a Strommy..."

@ricevs

You got a stromtank? How would you know ? You see what I’m saying ? And then I look like the bad guy for putting my gloves on... Do you only understand things when someone goes off? Do you only understand to not jump off the second floor of a building after you do it and break your legs? I don’t quite understand you 🤔

I've seen this movie before and i think you've seen it too. You know how it ends so why go there again man ?

3010 was going into the wall for this particular test. Having a stromtank does indeed lessen the importance of aftermarket powercords on the electronics

A pig wants you to wrestle in the mud with him and what is the reward ? Nothing...

That said, If i see more of the same behavior happening on this thread then I’ll have to send the moderators an email. They will clean up his act.

Jay isn't spending money on things that are experimental and that he will need to be buried with. Who's going to buy all the devices from this experiment if they fail to impress you? Lol 😂

6k GONE !

Jay is a dealer for stromtank...not the distributor...the distributor is someone else .

With regards to the DYI BATTERY thingy, i urge those who want to go back and forth non-stop about it to take it to PMs or start a fresh thread elsewhere.

Folks,

The AC in my home has been out since Thursday. I’ve not been able to create more content because it’s 88F in my house with full blown humidity. Luckily my audio room has a split unit so it’s cool and my family can sleep in it.

Man, the service contractor said the coil went bad and i got an ac leak and now they are saying there is a part shortage due to COVID which could delay things!

I purchased a portable Frigidaire AC unit which seems to be doing a little bit but only in the living room area. The rooms are like saunas right now.

I should rethink this audio thing and consider doing ac service. There’s an entire hustle and mafia in south Florida when it comes to ac. The way global warming is going, AC business might be better than buying Bitcoin way back when.

Business ideas I've thought about:

AC service

Trucking company

Stripper (😂 -kidding)

Just decided to get the entire ac system replaced. What if the system sounds better after a new ac system is installed in the house ? Hmm that’s when I’d be checking myself in a mental institution lol.

Alright folks i managed to record a quick video of my system playing QOBUZ for the first time.

Overall, qobuz seems to have better sound but not on every song. Some albums are identical. That said,  Tidal kills qobuz in terms of its music library.

If Spotify got their act together and created a Hi res version of its platform, it would bury qobuz and tidal. Spotify has pretty much everything.

You need a generator powered by diesel to feed the 3060. I don't believe you have grasped how massive and hungry the 3060 is.

  • 240v requirement
  • 900 watts class A
  • 350 lbs
  • 5 separate transformers

You can't get creative with it. It's destined to be on its platform and plugged into the wall.

Well this is very interesting... I just received a few emails from people in the industry that just watched the video i posted and they said the system is sounding out of this world with spaciousness and surreal clarity.

Folks - it's time you all grab your headphones and give it a listen. I want your feedback. Is the s2500 the better unit for my system?

I will give my comments after you all comment HERE!

@kren0006

just use the last 2 videos i published. There are 2 songs that both have in common and all you have to do is see which one you prefer. Today's video shows the s2500 and yesterday's (the qobuz video) shows the s1000.

Here is a video of the rawness that will be showcased on my members only section from my website which will launch soon. This is one of the videos that won't make it to YouTube but that i have shared (i edited a few parts out to make it YouTube friendly). I hope you all don't miss this!

@ricevs

I'd appreciate it if you DO NOT COME AT ME with such comments. One more comment like that towards me and I'll take it to the moderators which will ban you.

You've been warned.

Jay isn’t the type to lay down and take a beating by the internet trolls that come in and out of this thread. Jay is a dealer for 3 lines and these lines don’t put Ferrari keys in my hands.

i live with this stuff and most who come in and out of this thread to attack me only see this stuff on magazines while they take a dump. They also can’t afford it so their rage against the ultra high end often (not always) comes from not being able to afford it. Don’t be mad at the dude (the messenger) who lives with this. I don’t make the products. Pick up the phone and call those brands and go off on them. Tell them why they are a rip off. I don’t want to hear it. Stop shooting the messenger. Instead of hating on me, why not figure out a way to earn more income so you can better your system? I’ve done it, it can be done. Spending stupid time here posting doesn’t get you money to better your current rig. If you are here trolling, you will have a full time in your hands going forward. You're better off finding someone else to troll and take your frustrations out on. However, it's clear that if you are coming to troll then i must be on your mind. If you hated what i do, you'd just close out of this and carry on and never turn back but you simply can't tune out.

This is MY JOURNEY - NOT YOURS. However, somehow that gets overlooked?

Lastly, if my YouTube channel sounds bad, go find someone who has good videos on YouTube or go listen to those who simply review and have zero videos of their systems playing. You can analyze the soundstage coming out of their mouth and if their mouth sounds clear with enough depth and bass.

If you're going to respond to this post my saying " that's it, I've had enough of this. I can't take this. I'm out of here. I've followed you on YouTube and i don't like what you are doing" , instead of doing that, just close this window and quietly leave the room. I don't need to hear it and don't care to hear it so i just articulated for you.

Oh, since some folks love to throw rocks at me and hide their hand right after (yes let’s not go there) this isn’t threat but you could call your local authorities just in case to be sure that your life isn’t in danger by this post.

Thanks

@rbach

LMFAO 🤣!!!!!!!!

That was one funny comment. Man i almost fell out of my chair !

Folks,

I have purchased the cartridge that will go with my Kronos turntable:

My Sonic Labs Ultra Eminent Ex (Msrp $7,999)

i hope to get it this month and by the way we will do the comparisons of my MSB SELECT 2 DAC versus Kronos turntable. You all need headphones for those comparisons. I've been told by many that they feel these shootouts will be EPIC because 99% of people out there have never compared one of the best dacs versus one of the best turntables in the world. I hope you all are excited about this next chapter 😎!!!!

@flrun

Thanks for your kind words above. Yep, once the site goes live, i will be sure to provide the link under each future YouTube video. I’ve been swamped with work too which is what is slowing me down. I also want to have enough content for when people become members, they can find content and my amplifier rankings, preamp rankings, speaker rankings and of course, THE WORST COMPONENTS I HAVE EVER OWNED. These lists will be updated as i keep pushing forward.

One quick update, the Mephisto Apex will be in my dealer’s hands in 2 weeks which means i could potentially have in my hands the 450 lb monster amplifier by the end of this month!

That said, this is a loan from gryphon which is being facilitated by a gryphon dealer. Gryphon will not be sending this amp to any other YouTuber for a review so if you want to see this beast next to its direct rival - Boulder 3060 - you gotta tune in on my channel and put your seatbelt on.

Can a $100,000 Danish stereo amp defeat a $142,000 American amp?

Does the Gryphon APEX have no direct rivals?

Or can 900 watts of Boulder muscle destroy anything in its path?

what are you all more excited to see? Top Dac VERSUS Top Turntable? Or these two behemoths of amplification going at it ?

Man this is going to get seriously insane and i could not do any of this without you all!

I’m not embarking on the pissing match you both got going on. How about you both buy one stromtank (split the cost ) and conduct your own testing ?

I got a lot of things going on that move my needles more than what you both are proposing which would lead NOWHERE for me and my business.
