Jazz for aficionados

Jazz for aficionados

I'm going to review records in my collection, and you'll be able to decide if they're worthy of your collection. These records are what I consider "must haves" for any jazz aficionado, and would be found in their collections. I wont review any record that's not on CD, nor will I review any record if the CD is markedly inferior. Fortunately, I only found 1 case where the CD was markedly inferior to the record.

Our first album is "Moanin" by Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers. We have Lee Morgan , trumpet; Benney Golson, tenor sax; Bobby Timmons, piano; Jymie merrit, bass; Art Blakey, drums.

The title tune "Moanin" is by Bobby Timmons, it conveys the emotion of the title like no other tune I've ever heard, even better than any words could ever convey. This music pictures a person whose down to his last nickel, and all he can do is "moan".

"Along Came Betty" is a tune by Benny Golson, it reminds me of a Betty I once knew. She was gorgeous with a jazzy personality, and she moved smooth and easy, just like this tune. Somebody find me a time machine! Maybe you knew a Betty.

While the rest of the music is just fine, those are my favorite tunes. Why don't you share your, "must have" jazz albums with us.

Enjoy the music.

Today’s Listen:

Les McCann LTD. -- IN SAN FRANCISCO

Nice booklet and photos. Mentions that McCann was the the object of "controversy," omg!!!
"...Yet the true story of McCann’s background makes it clear that much of the evidence adduced against him--that his style is a gimmick, his attitude phony and his music consequently invalid--is without justification.

There are small jealous minds even in Jazz. I guess his background in the church and gospel music didn’t go over well in the Big Apple.

Today's Listen:

Frank Morgan  --  LOVE, LOST & FOUND

All tunes are standards.   Great rhythm section.  TELARC recording, so you know it's well done.

Notes tell a sad tale of drug addition and imprisonment.  Morgan was once offered the chair in the Ellington band as a replacement for the departing Johnny Hodges.  If I read it correctly, he was fourteen!!

btw,
The first classical CD I ever purchased was by Liszt. Even before I had a player. I listened to it once. Nothing like validation from someone who knows.  The only Liszt I own.
My thinking is, the source is YT.  10k system, or not, it's YT.  Logitech just keeps it simple.  You sit in front of the computer, right in front of the screen and speakers, and enjoy the music.  No mega-buck audiophile system changes the fact that    It's YT.   Same facts and logic applies to LPs / turntables.

But I think you are correct, we are on different wavelengths.

Cheers
It features along with Wardell Gray a trumpet player seldom mentioned, but deserving more attention

I didn't include this in my post, but it was / is in the notes:

"...Still he(Morgan) fared better than his studio mate(Wardell Gray).  Within a few weeks of the recording session Gray turned up dead in the Nevada desert, by most accounts directly or indirectly a victim of his drug habit."

Really, Really sad, and what a waste.  We can only guess what "directly or indirectly" refer to.

Today's Listen:

Charlie Haden / Hank Jones  --  STEAL AWAY
Spirituals, Hymns and Folk Songs

Nice booklet with a lot of 'feel good' history as to the circumstances surrounding the history of each tune and it's origin and composer.  All of very dubious validity.

Albums like this always remind of Jelly Roll's statement, "Jazz is a way of playing music."   Of course, none of these tunes were written as Jazz.

Very interesting.  If they were 'normal', they wouldn't be who  / what they were.  I wonder how the entire Jazz way of life affected their ability to obtain financial success.  No one seems to ever talk about money in a serious way.

Today's Listen:

The Jazz Crusaders  --  LIGHTHOUSE '68
Wayne Henderson(trombone), Wilton Felder(tenor Sax), Joe Sample(piano), Buster Williams(bass), Stix Hooper(drums)

Informative booklet tells of the band's recording history.  Includes this:

"Coming from a part of the country that did not spend a lot of time debating over what was Jazz, what was Blues and what was R&B, they dipped freely and seamlessly into all of their roots."

Had to LOL at that.  Dropped the word "jazz" from their name in the early 70s.    Recorded 1967

Fusion is something that happens inside of Stars. In music, it’s a failed experiment. Remember ’Third Stream?’

Question: Why does, Jazz + anything else, still equal Jazz?

What do Jazz and Classical have in common? They use the same instruments and notes.

my "go to" for a reasonable price for years has been their HD-580.

I had the HD580, now my son has them.  I still have the HD650, HD660S and the HD560S.   Love them all.  An inexpensive way to scratch the 'something new' itch.

Well if you are content with the Oppo, that answers my question.  I don't own the Sony but it is under consideration.  I have the Oppo 103.

When seeking info on gear, I always seek the opinion of music lovers.

Thanks

Cheers
Rok my Oppo is the 103 as well. Went bonkers awhile back
That's the reason I am reluctant to put big money into any disc player.   The can become paper weights in an instant.

Glad to hear there is still support for the Oppo.  Mine is 6 years old with no problems so far.  My SACD player, Marantz SA8001, is 16 years old.  Time to start planning.   Every so often I get the error message "can't play", so I think it's days are numbered.

Cheers

Sine you mentioned SACD, I have a question.

Is there any difference in THE SOUND you hear from a SACD DISC being played by a blu-ray player as opposed to that same SACD DISC being played by a dedicated SACD player?

The difference in price is about 800 dollars, U.S.

Sony UBP X1100ES   $500,    vs   Yamaha CD-S1000   $1300

Thanks

Btw, I have two copies of Bitches Brew, because it is an important recording.

Cheers
Pharaoh’s Dance:

Pharaoh sure had a lot of Stanima!! That tune is almost as long as a Coltrane solo.

Corea on drums?? That’s the beauty of this kind of ’music’, the players can just pick up and ’play’ any instrument, and it all still sounds the same.   Miles on Bass?

So, Rok, my advise is to skip sacds if you plan to stick to jazz music. Since you listen to classic music as well, I guess that is where your funds should be be better spend

I agree.  I do have quite a few classical SACD discs.  I don't think Jazz benefits that much from SACD.  Most of the small group stuff was well recorded originally, no 'improvement' needed.

I have the Marantz CD6007 on order, and I was just thinking about 'bang for the buck' by getting a similarly priced Blu Ray player instead.  I think I'll stick with the Marantz.

Questions To The Frogman:

Listening to 'Pictures at an exhibition', Philadelphia - Ormandy, and noticed the Saxophone.   My question is, where does the impetus for instrument  development and creation come from?  The composers or players.

Chick Corea  --  SOLO PIANO STANDARDS

The tracks were recorded in Japan, Sweden, Norway, Switzerland and Denmark.
Lot of Monk.  Recorded 1999.

Notes  "....the communication of music lives absolutely far above all other human differences, such as differences in language, religion, race, culture, age, sex, politics, etc, etc...."

That may be true for Western music traveling the world, but I see no evidence of the reverse being true.

I hope your ok down there in Texas I have been watching the news and have saw some very unsettling videos.

Thanks for asking. My area is ok, but there are 20,000 other people in this city without power. Still iced in.

Texas is the only state with it’s own electrical grid, and it is not under Federal regulation. Usually, the major energy challenge down here, is the hot summers. The power generating and distribution network equipment, is not protected from, nor designed to operate in, this type of cold.

The price we pay for cheap energy.

Grass is Greener:

Close.   Close, because of the singer and the brass players.  The guitars were too loud, too many notes and too distorted.   Did I mention distorted?

The Blues / R&B,  is all about THE SINGER.  Everything else is in support and in the background.

I did like the way they dressed.  Esp the brass players.

Listening to recently arrived CD of Handel's 'Water Music.'  Orchestra of St Luke's - Mackerras - Telarc.

I remembered that they were the orchestra that played on "A Carnegie Hall Christmas Concert"(Battle, Previn, Marsalis)  Then I thought, they were just a 2nd or 3rd tier local outfit.   Shows you what I know.  These guys are playing with Mackerras!!   Must be Big Time.   Silly me.  Btw, the name of the Orch does not appear ANYWHERE on the CD or DVD.

borrow a few CD’s that he thinks are a good example of non-noise and compare. I bet you still like what you like, at least till you start hearing what he is hearing.

The problem is, this guy is batting a 1000 on recommendations.  Has a great gift for gab.  Such as, he talks about the bass lines in classical music, which I think is great.  I will have to try his 'best of' on Haydn.

Most of his recommendations are long out of print, so it's the used market.  He points out that classical releases  stay in-print for a week.  Or so it seems.  I am beginning to notice that also.  Get them while / when you can.   As far as used, ebay rivals Amazon.
