schubert I have also I have also been listening to Eddie Daniels this week. Will post some Daniels music next week. That WDR recording with Paquito D'Rivera is on my to buy list already.Hilario Duran really impressed me. Gary Burton made a recording many years ago titled" libertango". Here he is playing live http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UkSQV5tk4Pg |
pjw I ordered the Kenny dorham double live set remastered yesterday. Enjoy the John Coltrane stuff. I was not aware of the Living Space CD. This music is outtakes from other sessions? Could be a good addition to my Coltrane collection

frogman+1 Pepper Adams. I have that album on vinyl and I need to pull it out and listen to it. With regards to the sound I like RVG's recordings. The baritone sax does have a strong tone to start with and it's possible he was engineered to be a little stronger then the rest of the band. Another disc by Adams http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eLZ-kDgXMiI A disc I recently bought with another Bari player I like. It's Charlie Rouse's date but they work together well: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HZ4ZqcNK6p8 |
schubertNice post! If we are posting about baritone players how could we forget Gerry Mulligan. Can't do that it wouldn't be right!
frogmanI like the Jones Adams Quintet "Mean What You Say" music you posted. With Jones on flugelhorn his tone Blends really well with pepper Adams. This is one I overlooked I'm buying a copy for my collection.
Alex that then Harry Carney cut was excellent. The way he held that note so long towards the end of the song was amazing!! Was he the guy who started it all on baritone sax? His tone seems a little lighter then say Pepper Adams which I liked although I have to admit it's hard to get a light tone out of a baritone sax.lol
pjw the group of the group of four you posted on 6/19 are excellent. the only one I don't have is Donald Harrison. I've overlooked him need to get a couple of titles. He reminds me a little of Sonny Rollins with a modern slant.Do you have the other two duo albums Archie shepp did for Steeplechase" Goin Home "and" Looking for bird"? I have all three duo albums on 180 gram vinyl and they sound great!! "Going home" is all Spirituals. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vd-vGYpI82Q http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QpPGN77aJNo |
pjw & schubert I have a $50 dollar pair of outboard speakers I previously owned that I connected to my new computer purchased in JAN. I don't use headphones just a personal preference. I don't do ANY serious listening on my computer , I have a dedicated 2 channel stereo system where 99% of my listening happens. But it keeps costing me money!
pjwI did not get around to posting any Hamiet Bluiett this time but did include something previously when we were posting baritone players.I was introduced to his music from work he did with the Mapleshade label I like him a lot. I also like a guy named George Haslam but could not find what I wanted to post. I have been listening to J Carter more about him later. |
schubert I agree it's all I agree it's all serious listening which you are able to do better because you have a nice sounding computer setup whereas unfortunately I don't.
pjwNice group of under 60 sax players I'll add a few when I have time
pjwBeen Listening to James Carter's the Real Quiet Storm. From the first note on baritone of the first cut what a great sound he produces. On all instruments. Very strong tone, excellent improvisation. He also owes a little debt 2 some of the Blues shouters from the 50s / 60s, like Gene Ammons. Eddie lockjaw Davis, Arnett Cobb. James can really make his horn Shout with a strong Blues feel. I bought this CD because it was mostly standards and a good introduction to JC. But The first original cut I listen to is my favorite on the album so far.
pjwThanks. On that big band cut James Carter actually Cuts loose a little bit before the guitar player also had an excellent solo. And also an excellent solo from the accordion player unusual instrument not seen too much in jazz. JC's solo at the end of the cut makes the band smile with the sounds and technique gets out of the horn! I can't believe you I can't believe you listen to your main rig at 115 decibels. Do you actually measure that with an SPL meter? I am surprised your wife doesn't throw you out of the house. LOL. That is concert level sound.I commend you on your Compromise regarding listening sessions. It's something I would not have to worry about as my dedicated Listening Room has a door which can be shut and if someone is down the hall in my TV room the sound does not not bother them .I am interested in JC's upcoming concerts but my girlfriend's birthday is the 15th and we have plans for the 15th and 16th so that leaves the 17th open possibly
schubert I appreciate your kind gesture and attempting to enhance my computer listening experience. Would a USB dac plug-in device enhance the sound or is it for storage of music ?Maybe a sound card upgrade like you did would be a good idea and a set of headphones or another set of speakers? but no matter how much I upgrade the computer listening system the bulk of my listening would be on the main rig which is about 2-5 hours a day.

frogmanI've been listening to Vincent Herring for a while always liked him. Especially liked that Caravan cut and the contributions from Jeremy Pelt and Danny grissett the piano player.
pjw I did read your post correctly the first time but thought it was a misprint. now that I realize you were not referring to an S PL meter reading but the volume pot on a pre amplifier. One of my pre amplifiers has a number volume pot in decibels and the - 15 DB setting places the volume control at about 2 and 3 o'clock. Normal listening setting with this preamplifier is between 12 and 2 on the volume pot. Which is about 80 Db plus or minus using an SP L meter at my sitting position.
acman3Excellent Mingus big band picks. I have all three albums. Thanks Minges lives on!!!
acman3Xlent. That's Lee Morgan's" Bluesanova". I first heard Cory Weeds on my cable TV jazz music station. I found that live at the Cellar cd on Amazon and have on my short list to buy. Can'tgo wrong with Terell Stafford and the veteran Harold Mabern in the group.
pjw & schubert nice to see some of the female players getting some exposure on the forum. I like Grace Kelly's exuberance and the band was tight the music well done. Not something I would purchase but a good listen!! I like I like Erena terakubo I have this CD by her: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x740WEWMQRQ |
pjwSorry about the duplicate posting on Erena. do you have that CD it's a good one with a lot of standards
frogmanFirst exposure to MiguelZenon. A fresh voice. I knew Antonio Sanchez and Luis Perdomo from they're playing with others. I think Perdomo is an excellent player. I can hear these players Heritage in the playing of The rhythms. do you know who's the piano player is on Esta Plena? it sounds like Luis but I'm not sure.
pjwI have Eren a Terakubo's North Star CD and I just ordered "a time for love". just ordered two new James Carter CDs and I've been listening to your post of "out of nowhere"
two new James Carter
pjwI bought Pesent Tense and Jurassic Classics. I think my next purchase may be chasing the Gypsy, the tribute CD. I'll check out the other titles you suggested. That reviewer on Amazon nailed it on the head about James. it doesn't look like I'll be able to make that concert next week maybe the next time he comes around. Enjoy and please do a write-up / review after the show.
pjw Gilberto's music was beautiful & timeless . The music he made with Stan Getz and others will live on forever.R.I.P.
mary_jo Hi !! Just curious as to why you wanted me to leave the room before the asian joke? ( I'm not asian)
mary_jo Haha! Yes that is true. You have a good memory I don't remember mentioning that. Not to worry she does not see any of this forum and I promise not to tell her. LOL
pjwI have that CD" Mostly Coltrane" by Steve Kuhn for quite a while along with many other titles by him mostly Piano Trio settings. I regard him as a very underrated musician who has flyed under the radar for most of his career but his musician ship, songwriting talents, improvisational skills and ability to put together excellent bands makes him one of my favorite musicians.
mary_joThanks for posting on Emily Remler. I have long been a fan and have her CDs on the Concord label. I knew she died young but heard conflicting stories about having heart problems and then also other stories about a drug problem. The story you posted seem to bring out the fact that as a woman in a man's profession she seems to suffer and have difficulties in securing work and acceptance which is sad. A terrific Talent gone too soon.
pjwI was listening to vocalists Tierney Sutton and astrud Gilberto this afternoon. I think Sutton has a much better voice but that doesn't mean that Astrid is not a singer. First of all if Stan Getz chose her over anyone else I have to respect that . Astrud had a nice light delicate voice that perfectly fit the new category of music created. And also I think she did pretty well considering English is not her first language. As you said "the Girl from Ipanema" was an international hit and Still Remains very popular song anywhere in the world where it's played. You can't argue with that!!
pjw I also have my eye on that new Stan Getz live recording with Roy Haynes and Steve Kuhn. Let me know how you like it!!
schubert enough with the personal attacks. I did not personally attack you. You are entitled to your opinion as pjw says. calling Stan Getz calling Stan Getz a sexual predator is not an intelligent statement. trying to trying to equate sales of a heavy metal rock group and put that in a jazz context isn't a logical comparison. I did notice another member personally attacked you and I was going to call him on that but his post was deleted. If you don't like Stan Getz and or astrud Gilberto okay we do. Let's leave it at that.
pjw no rush let me know when you get a chance to listen. Enjoy the show tonight. Tell James he has a new fan!!!
pjwThat Stan Getz live Village Gate recording is definitely an excellent addition to his recordings of that time frame. As you know from his biography (which I am reading now) his popularity had Fallen in the late 50s. I actually was amazed to discover how many musician polls he came in first year after year. in 1961 he had not embraced the free jazz thing and it was prior to his Bossa Nova recordings. So I am curious to see if he attempted to stretch out more on this Live date. according according to one of the reviewers on Amazon Roy Hayne's drumming moves Getz to stretch out a bit more. Wondering if you had the same impression?
alexatpos thanks thanks for posting that Cohen concert. I have been listening to it enjoying the trio. From the first note I was drawn in to the music. The trio is very cohesive and plays as one. They are a very tight unit especially considering the drummer was a replacement that night. enjoy the show let us know what you think.
pjw Thanks just listen to The Impressions cut you posted. Wow. I'm buying it right away no hesitation.BTW I just saw a listing on Amazon for a new Donald Byrd album title "Chant" early 60s with pepper Adams and Herbie Hancock supposedly in his first album feature. the listing was for vinyl I didn't see CD available but I'll check it out and let you know
frogman thanks thanks for clarification. Yes I got the impression that" chant" wasn't issued till much later from some Amazon reviewers but did not know the other recording was the same date and issued first. The new vinyl version is coming out September 6th and it's $30.
pjw I also I also ordered the Cohen album "Gently Disturbed"
pjw I ordered Donald Byrd's "Mustang" and I will order "Royal Flush " next as I'm trying to expand my collection of his Blue Note recordings. I have "Free Form" the title you mentioned recently on vinyl. Gets a lot of play here. Just ordered James Carter's "At The Crossroads" will probably order "Out of Nowhere" the music you posted next. Thanks.

acman3Nice Mitchell/Mays vids. Thanks.Mays seems to have flown under my radar as he has several dozen recordings under his own name and I only have one.
pjwI have the companion LP Soul Junction listed on your allmusic link but don't have All Morning Long which would be a good addition for both Coltrane and early D Byrd. I was not aware of the box set side steps but this album is probably on it it's a classic http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G4cQkkObYDY |
Alex Looking forward to your impressions on the Cohan concert!! Will listen to your music vid post later |
pjw I am also a big boxing fan. My research shows that red Garland did indeed have a amateur boxing career with about thirty five fights as a welterweight. before he gave it up to pursue his music career. It seemed that both were going on simultaneously. He did fight just an exhibition bout with Sugar Ray Robinson for 8 rounds which he lost badly. He would later joke that he didn't hurt his hands in the Robinson bout because he only hit Ray about once or twice. If you Google red Garland- boxing sites will come up where I obtained this information. Sorry I couldn't provide the exact link I'm not that great at this computer stuff.
