Jazz for aficionados

Jazz for aficionados

I'm going to review records in my collection, and you'll be able to decide if they're worthy of your collection. These records are what I consider "must haves" for any jazz aficionado, and would be found in their collections. I wont review any record that's not on CD, nor will I review any record if the CD is markedly inferior. Fortunately, I only found 1 case where the CD was markedly inferior to the record.

Our first album is "Moanin" by Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers. We have Lee Morgan , trumpet; Benney Golson, tenor sax; Bobby Timmons, piano; Jymie merrit, bass; Art Blakey, drums.

The title tune "Moanin" is by Bobby Timmons, it conveys the emotion of the title like no other tune I've ever heard, even better than any words could ever convey. This music pictures a person whose down to his last nickel, and all he can do is "moan".

"Along Came Betty" is a tune by Benny Golson, it reminds me of a Betty I once knew. She was gorgeous with a jazzy personality, and she moved smooth and easy, just like this tune. Somebody find me a time machine! Maybe you knew a Betty.

While the rest of the music is just fine, those are my favorite tunes. Why don't you share your, "must have" jazz albums with us.

Enjoy the music.

Acman, great find, thanks for that.
It seems that musicians have more relaxed attitude towards different styles and music in general, than the fans.
Green seems to be a very calm and quiet individual...

...'when you listen to George Benson playing instrumentals, you are in fact listening Grant Green'....

There are five cd’s in that ’series’, fifth beeing issued later, with some unreleased recordings. Great music, we mentioned it here before, but its always good to point on great albums. Also we have mentioned the albums of individuals who played there, Kamuca, Gordon, etc...

In case somebody likes it, there are also two albums of Shelly Manne and his men, live at the Manne Hole.
Great music too, perhaps not quite on the level as previosly mentioned editions, but still...

Now I sew that Nsp mentioned the same albums...it dont mind, there are clips now as well.
Victor Feldman, pianist on the SM Blackhawk albums, posted some of his albums, gone unnoticed, will use the opportunity to do it again...

If anyone is interested, I have few of his albums to recommend....

Since we have mentioned some drummers and west coast players in recent discussions, I find this album to be quite appropriate to mention...

’...this time the drum’s on me’ by Stan Levey, from 1955.

I would agree with what Pryso had already said, no point to discuss in a such way, arguing. Just to add, that sales argument is not the one that I would hold on to. So many jazz of yesterday is quite unknown today and lots of people just want to have some of the ’best’ music from ’this’ or ’that’ genre, so they buy the one album that is ’well known’....its funny, but often, when some conversation about music starts, I discover how many people ’listens’ to jazz...and first (or better, the only ones) names that are mentioned are ’Miles and Coltrane’....
I would not agree with that list and furthermore I honestly believe that is impossible to make one...
Orpheus, something for you....Rok, dont listen this....

...aldo it brings some memories, its strange how I cant listen this music anymore...not even rock music, except sometimes, somewhere on the radio....makes me wonder who was I than, long time ago, when I liked it....

Orpheus, you might be right. I guess it would be interesting to find out (or realise) why some music touch us and some other not.

In my case, I was always digging back thru time, looking to discover some music, because I did not like the one from the present. (born 1973)

Luckily, I have discovered jazz in my early 20’s and after that I was not looking or listening to other stuff, aldo I kept almost all my old records.

For a very short period of time, I listened to some 'fusion' as well, but it did not stick. Perhaps that even today I am quite reluctant to move back to that time frame, when we speak about some further development of music...

I have no idea how I would feel I was hearing jazz first and than come to live in a time when everything has changed, musicly and otherwise?
Probably I would become somebody like Rok (smile)....or perhaps not, after all?

Pjw,
if we were closer, I would give you some of my records as a gift, maybe it would be interesting for you to have some ’exotic’ prints.
Like I said, I cant listen to that anymore. It sounds so ’limited’ and ’predictable’, or even worse, just boring...or annoying....

I know that it sounds harsh, but that is exactly the feeling I got when I have guests and they ask me to play some other music than jazz...(sometimes I feel sorry for them, I am not a perfect host in that regard)

Blues, or some other pure or ’simple’ forms are ok... but hard rock, or sympho or progressive rock, or psychodelia...it sounds so pretentious, or funny, if I am in better mood....like children pretending to be adults...

Frogman, no worries, just speak up your mind...

When I used that analogy, I ment to say that children often like to impersonate grown ups and thats the feling I get now when I listen or look to some of music that I have listened before. (most often rock, the other stuff, like some that I posted for Orpheus is even more distant or unlistenable to me)

The fact that I am trying to prolong my childhood (first 50 years are the hardest they say) perhaps has something with the use of that analogy

Why I have such a strong feelings against rock and other music from past now, is interesting even for me....

But, in case you ever decide to visit and spend some holiday time here, you will return home with an album of Allman Brothers....and a copy of KC for PJW...

In the meantime...

’Moanin’

Oscar Peterson trio with Lee Morgan...

Orpheus in which book?

Inna, you probably do not find that many interesting music here?
Funny, now as I think about it, I thoght you might like this Rollins album...

Pjw, those lp’ are not the current modern remasters or prints. Probably you would pay for shipping much more than the records are worth...but if you are interested, just of curiosity, to own a vinyl that was produced in ex Jugoslavia, I could check the  shipping rates and send you something...perhaps an album of King Crimson?
Pjw, now you got me laughing, send me your name and adress on pm. will send you one on my expanse and if you want I will even sign it for you,ha,ha.
Yes, I live in Split, Croatia, on the Adriatic sea...so,if you ever decide to spend some holidays here, you (or anyone of you, affacionados) are welcome...
Even bettter, Mary Jo can fix you some sailing yacht and program(she runs such business) to make such visit really worthvile....

I guess you could listen to samples, see if you like it, I have it, but overall I would say it its an average album. Some good stuff, but nothing exceptional...

Acman, perhaps you should first ask yourself...this question...

Sonus Faber all the way, different models, all monitors (limited with space for bigger) liked the Guarneri Homage best.
Had a Avantgarde Acoustics horns once, expected more.
Just bought  Franco Serblins Lignea, small but with impedance that does not goes bellow 7.9ohm, want to try them with single ended amp.

Do not think that voice is the most important instrument
Nsp, I like him too. His last session and most touching, for me, is ’Soul Samba’.
But, in case that you wish to hear some less known albums where he plays you can check Jimmy Smiths ’Open house/Plain talk’ albums, recorded on the same day but not issued untill much later...

alo, Blue Note ’45 rpm sessions is nice double album...and ’Easy living’ is not mentioned often....

https://youtu.be/f3D1Yr0u7VQ

Nsp, about '45 album....
'During his comeback years (1959-62) after a decade mostly off the scene, tenor saxophonist Ike Quebec recorded frequently for Blue Note. He started off with a session aimed at the 45 jukebox market and, although he eventually made a few full-length albums for the label, Quebec cut four 45 dates over a two-and-a-half-year period. This double-disc set has all of the jukebox sessions. Most of the 26 selections clock in between four and seven minutes and have long melody statements in addition to concise and soulful solos. Quebec, who was in consistently prime form during his last period, is joined by groups featuring either Skeeter Best or Willie Jones on guitar and Edwin Swanston, Sir Charles Thompson, or Earl Van Dyke on organ. Fun, loose and highly enjoyable music. '

Soul Samba is album that I love, its good that you may hear it on ytube and decide for yourself. If you have a good analog set up, that record might be a 'real deal'. Kenny Burrell plays on it, if that means anything....

No, still not, forgive me, will try my best to do it on Monday.
Yes, Das Boot is a great movie....have only few movies on dvd, never thought of collecting them, perhaps because I always try to see some that I have not seen yet...and yet, I buy books, aldo it takes much more time to read the book again, than to see the film.
Hm, thats a interesting thought now...
I think we are sometimes mixing apples and oranges, as they say...

As far as I am concern, I would not give my self a liberty to judge something that I am not properly educated of.

Meaning, as much as I like and listen music and as much as I can recognise 'great' performing I could not explain in so many correct terms whay some particular performance is 'great' or 'good'. (for 'bad' ones is easier,it seems)

I may say that I like it. (or not)

For rest and for more, I tend to leave it to professionals...

Than again, for some performances, I am completely certain, that if looked from 'technical' point of view, they are incomplete, to say at least, but sometimes or often, some of them give me chills.

For instance, Chet Baker. He is not Placido Domingo nor even Dean Martin, but his singing is very dear to me.

As for A.Lenox or E.Elias, they are great, but never either of them even remotly gave me the feeling such as I had while listening to Nina Simone

Just wanted to say that 'confrontation' with 'better' examples to some of our choices is not the right path, imho.

My first thought, when I see something interested posted is to post another gem, that perhaps the original poster might like and does not have.

For the ones that I dont like, I stay politely silent or even try to give it one more shot,(if its in genre that I like) out of respect or with a thought that I could perhaps discover some new angle to look at it.

Spewing your bile across people you've never met is lousy way to talk about jazz, no matter how fun it may seems. Its a kind of folklor here, but I should hate if it gets out of hands. So, you have been warned...

Frogman, you have excluded some of our very important household names, guess you did not want to stir the pot...

Since nobody has a reason to doubt my good intentions, I will post couple of  'descriptions' as well...

"Any similarities to actual persons or places, alive or dead, real or ficticious is merely coincidental and the product of a feverish imagination."

Pryso, respect....Frogman, not bad, either...

Just to mention, saw Pat Martino alive, couple years back...Paco de Lucia too, with sextet...
Than, of greats, McCoy Tyner with Latin all stars,Frogmans very favourite Michael Brecker, Abbey Lincoln, Randy Weston,Charlie Haden,Joe Zawinul sindicate...
More interesting, all of them and some more in my hometown...

Reuben Wilson,Fred Wesley, Marc Ribot, Manu Katche,  Trilok Gurtu are also comming to mind...

But than again, I enjoyed the Gorillaz, Massive Atack, Stereo McS and Nick Cave, as well...

Also, I missed some that I have already bought tickets..
If I may share a story, for one such 'sad' ocassion...once I bought a ticket for a Ernest Ranglin and Monty Alexander, performing  together...

The concert was a part of their world tour, at time held in Berlin. To cut long story short I was dating a girl for a few years, that lived in Berlin and I was quite often there...and vice versa....at the time of that particular concert I was already there week before, visting (my turn) and was very excited looking forward to see them...
One evening we went in a quarrell and after sleeples night, in the morning I was leaving Germany, heading home...eventually we get back together again, but I never managed to forget about that concert,ha,ha...

Orpheus, somehow it seems to me that this song would me more suitable than the one you have posted last (in the summertime)...

Beeing able to spit into death's eye is a unique and respectful quality that requires sharp brain and strong character. Both my parents had 'overtime'
but their response to it was very different.
Needless to say, I consider 'prettier gender' to be stronger as well.

...I am quite certain that they are not the ’true comrades’ as well, but than again, maybe I am too young to know...’smile’

As for Love, talking about Schuberts words, once I read a novel from James A. Michener in which he says that than young generations (in 60’s) believed that best ’love’ song is this one...

https://youtu.be/IN4lb13oZyY

Again, funny enough, that genertaion is closer ( or your age) to some of you guys...

Perhaps my upbringing went the wrong way somewhere, somehow, (smile) since by the time I was able to think that I understand something about love, I prefered Nat King Cole (or at least Dean Martin)

So, on that matter, I am with you, Schubert....’sensitive kind’...

My hometown has roughly about 200 000 people and has 2 shopping malls, with cinemas and evrything that comes with it.
In the same time, the town cinemas has all closed but one one, not counting the small ’boutique’ cinema that plays ’serious’ movies.
So, the other day, went to the cinema in a town (I prefer not to go to the malls) and was the only person that bought the ticket for 9pm.projection.
Offered to come next day, so that staff does not need to wait for me, but the guy that rips the tickets said that he will gladly watch the movie too.

Funny, even the open sport courts are not filled with children, but with older guys plaing soccer or basketball while younger generations are too busy with their smartphones, I guess...

So, it might not be only the lack of interest for culture, jazz or sport, or education in general, it just might be the complete shift in social behaviour...for better or worst, I guess we cant judge...
