Today’s Listen: Louis Armstrong -- LOUIS ARMSTRONG AND THE GOOD BOOK Two albums on one CD. ’Louis and The Good Book’ and ’Louis and The Angels’. The Good Book is by far the better of the two. Most of these are from a certain era in Gospel/Spirituals. Seems dated, but the best. Back then songs told a story, now they just say the word ’Jesus’ every now and then, and call it Church Music. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xD8BTetqIW0 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bvEmq-cX0G4 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4xzQdN5uoNE https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qz2CuVUog8I Cheers |

Paulette Dozier: I want to like her, but there seems to be something lacking / wrong with her voice / phrasing. If I were the Frogman, I would know exactly what to say. She is a Fox, and that will carry you a long way in this world. I thought she was better on this. No Billie, but who is. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-V182_0mEjI&list=PL2cEdBEzcrZTxUtpMEJ34c04H03QYVxNT&index=6 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=efoqIg-OCBg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UpDrlNjyTnY Cheers |
Today's Listen: Sir Roland Hanna -- DUKE ELLINGTON PIANO SOLOS Excellent notes. Nice write up of each tune. "'Come Sunday' is the spiritual theme of Black, Brown and Beige, which provoked much controversy when it was premiered at Carnegie Hall in 1943. " Does not say why, but in 1943, could have been any silly thing. Hanna had a brilliant career. Composer. Played with Mingus, Goodman etc.... and even played with Jazz at Lincoln Center. Also attended and taught at several prestigious music schools. The 'Sir' comes from a Honor given him by the President of Liberia. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sw-zSAYc-48 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BiqKpyM9YE4 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=48rlU9Z4O-A https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_YspoVm55QM I kept waiting for him to 'cut-loose', but he never did. Back in the day when heart transplants were in their infancy, a well known surgeon did his while this was piped into the Operating Room. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h1F8uIqCsMI Cheers |
I remember where I was the first time I heard this. Still sounds just as good today. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y8YOLY4Tats Cheers |
I'm getting hundreds of emails a day, all demanding I bring her back, So, by popular DEMAND: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=en6kmiX0SDc Cheers |
Kenny Burrell: I have that CD. Probably the last Jazz 'Christmas' music I have bought, or will buy. No matter how good the playing, it just does not get me in the Christmas mood. I have Jazz Christmas CDs by Wynton, Oscar and Burrell. But I seldom play them at Christmas. There are always exceptions: (DVD) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0XIjGei8zG8 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K5j5XjbhuTo https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZbIAEKQ7GmY&list=RDZbIAEKQ7GmY&start_radio=1 Cheers |
Today's Listen: Gene Harris Quartet -- BLACK AND BLUE The more I hear him, the better he gets. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9jYSjqYABHg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q5UkBJWMVz4 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m1UZTOHzFAA Cheers |
Betty Carter: Her version of "Favorite Things" is now one of my favorite things. I liked all three songs. You have to 'listen' to her music. I would imagine it's not easy to play in the group backing her. I was thinking that if Paulette Dozier had not done so many Standards / Popular Jazz tunes, she would have come across better. When you hear 'moonlight' you think of all the greats that have done that tune, and then you compare her to them. I have quite a few CDs by Carter. I'll bring them out now. DeJohnette, Holland and Allen are not my favorite folks, but that was very good. Cheers I must be the only person in the country that did not hear her on the Cosby show. |
A must have for the quality of the singing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z62Ju7ADThY https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RQjr4wtozLA https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FxVgUulaSGE Cheers |
O-10, I think the facts of today are the same as they were back then. Different audience, with money, meant different music. Primarily a post war thingy. But, even back then, NYC was the creative home of Jazz, even though players traveled around the country / world playing. So, who played this west coast stuff, and why? That is the question. I never related to it. Too smooth, no grit / bite. Cheers Booming (diverse) population and economy, Hollywood in it's prime, California being considered the cutting edge of America, all played a part. A counter weight to NYC? |
O-10, We should all be wary of fabricated genres. Esp in Jazz and Blues. Some people found they could give the locals what they wanted to hear and make a lot of money doing it. That's the American way. Even Miles did it. But, the creative heart and soul of Jazz remains NYC. The rest are just, as our OP might say, "earning a Living". Which begs the question, what the heck was Gene Harris doing in Idaho?? Cheers |
Today's Listen: Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers -- MOSAIC messengers include Freddie Hubbard, Curtis Fuller, Wayne Shorter One of the better incarnations of The Jazz Messengers. Notes: They talk about a tour of Japan where they were aired on Japanese Television for an entire hour. 'Color' television at that. That seemed to impress them to no end. They point out that the Japanese are very advanced in 'Color' TV. Talk about sounding dated. However, the music is fresh. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pzfURZdmkx8 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rS9wQqFgR68 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SqI7KG1ERyQ Question for the OP. Does Blakey solo on every tune they play? You being a big fan of Art Blakey. Cheers |
Let's get them footes a moving. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tz_aiWVQXIE for some reason, they dedicated this to the OP. hmmmm https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fkQdwth1A7I Cheers |
Does anyone know the Name of this type of singing? https://www.chanticleer.org/cds/where-the-sun-will-never-go-down Click on the "Am I a Soldier of the Cross" track. Thanks. Cheers |
Today's Listen: Roy Hargrove Quintet -- WITH THE TENORS OF OUR TIME the tenors are:Johnny Griffin, Joe Henderson, Branford Marsalis, Joshua Redman, and Stanley Turrentine Turrentine https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ERsjIjpfdlI Griffin https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y3MFQaUA0mY Marsalis https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7lyR-V8td3w In the notes he gives Special Thanks to almost everyone in the Alpha Quadrant, to include,...."all the Jazz listeners and supporters around the world". That would be us. Nice touch you don't see everyday. Cheers |
Today's listen: Gene Ammons -- BOSS TENOR Ray Barretto on Conga Notes: ..."his playing is a perfect (albeit weird) assimilation of two seemingly widely opposed ideas of playing the Tenor saxophone. Gene somehow manages to sound like he comes right out of both Coleman Hawkins and Lester Young, the two farthest poles in the business of playing the Tenor Saxophone"....LeRoi Jones I thought Jones was a writer / Poet. Everyone's a critic. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-vl4_f8Emtw https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IK85sqy8OLg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hnAQylm5kqg Cheers |
Today's Listen: Kenny Dorham -- AFRO-CUBAN with/J.J. Johnson,Hank Mobley,Horace Silver,Art Blakey,Carlos Valdes and others Excellent Booklet with great Pictures. Tells of Kenny's long years of paying his dues, playing with all the big stars, but always in the background. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7myLXPUBB_w https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IMI9bpIMKZc https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4DTd6Sqjrns Cheers oooops, almost forgot, Richie Goldberg on Cowbell |
Today's Listen: Sergio Mendes and Brasil '66 -- FOURSIDER The title comes from the fact that this was issued as a 2lp set. Heavy with songs from Lennon and McCartney. Nice playing, nice tunes, but this group is nothing without the female singers. They are awesome. No notes. check around :36 wow!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K8LBvgwDjyg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p3eVVPUHfCE https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N62YfXUh1gI https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VgPaOoRMrdg Cheers |
Mercy Lord: ***** the human race is destroying the planet we live on***** This planet will be destroyed when the Sun dies and swallows the earth in it's death throes. Man does not have the power to destroy this planet. It's just shows man's arrogance when they say they will/can. Destroying Homo Sapiens, is a different matter. Insignificant in the total scheme of things. ***** prosperous city for the working class I have ever been to. Everybody it seems had a brand new car ***** Having a brand new car is not a sign of anything, except, the dealer sold you a car. Which the finance company still owns. ***** The fact that a 16 year old autistic girl is blowing the loudest horn could be seen as Biblical intervention ***** I think her 15 minutes are just about up. Thank you Jesus. Cheers |
On the way to the gym today this came up on my music stick. I just laughed. I don't know why. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7bfW7cUtgXA Cheers |
Today's Listen: Manhattan School of Music Afro-Cuban Jazz Orchestra -- I QUE VIVA HARLEM Notes: A brief over view of the history of East Harlem and it's musical heritage, with Mario Bauza figuring prominently in both. "The Manhattan School of Music Jazz Arts Program, one of the first conservatories in the U.S. to acknowledge the prime importance of Jazz as an Art Form...." Today's Listen: Allen Toussaint -- THE BRIGHT MISSISSIPPI Don Byron-Clarinet, Nicholas Payton-Trumpet https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zMnXZ8mQWZQ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IwKLPqZzmmI check 2:57 says a lot, while holding the same note. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RcPsgMa74Lk https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lCHddHp8OAw Cheers |
Brubeck: Interesting music. Jazz??? A different question. Cheers btw, if you didn’t at least play with the best on occasion, how can you even be in consideration for ’The Best’. That’s like Ali fighting us Aficionados, knocking us all out in the first second of the first round, then declaring himself ’The Greatest". Well, maybe 3 seconds in the case of the OP. Cheers |
