Chan Chan: Excelente !!! Speaking of Cuba, I was listening to this yesterday. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UOXF6qKmbPQ The guys in Cuba take a back seat to no one when it comes to Jazz. Cheers |
Today's Listen: Count Basie & Dizzy Gillespie -- THE GIFTED ONES with Ray Brown and Mickey Roker Liner notes that only The Frogman would love. Written by Joe Pass. Talks about, 3rds and minors and c7-flat-5 on the fifth bar. Who does he think will be reading this stuff? Anyway, the music speaks for itself. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HbkrfWsv2iU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=me_7MvpHm2w https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_rSsSgt6OuQ Cheers |
Sunny Side of The Street: Great CD. I play it often. I look upon Jazz musicians as like a fraternity where people are in and out, with this group and that group and as side men, leaders, just all over the place...... But, Sonny Rollins always seemed to stand out from the crowd. Like he was above the fray. Perhaps someone could discuss Rollins and his place in Jazz. Cheers |
Got this a few days ago, finally. Not Jazz, but kin folks. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FVxm7g8xbE4 Cheers |
Today's Listen: Clifford Brown and Max Roach -- AT BASIN STREET with Sonny Rollins "this is the EmArcy debut of a musician who in the past couple of years has risen to high esteem among modern Jazzmen - Theodore Walter "Sonny" Rollins, the new idol of the tenor saxophone, who took over Harold Land's spot in the quintet late in 1955." notes. I see why he prefers "Sonny". https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rSjx3KEI_fM&list=RDrSjx3KEI_fM&start_radio=1 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Iw72DzZTgqc https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U-gfxvA-19E The notes also point out that Rollins played with Art Blakey in 1949!!! That's 70 years ago folks. No wonder he took a break. This was the last Brown / Roach recording. Cheers |

I believe its the one when you have a girlfriend who speaks little or no English .***** This is so true. The bad thing about being in the military in Germany is that you don't have to speak German to get along. I took a class in German in Hanau, at the University of Maryland extension. German professor. The first day of class he called the roll, then announced that, that would be the last time he said a word of English for the entire course. He kept his word. I was amazed at how effective that was. I was hearing "alle Zusammen" in my sleep. But reading the written word of different languages clearly shows how much 'borrowing' or 'quoting' as the Frogman would say, has gone on throughout the centuries. Cheers |

I lived the Summer of 70 in a motel just off of Peachtree Street; was the Art Theater on Peachtree Street.***** Yes it was, along with IBM where I worked. I think everything was on Peachtree street. By the summer of 1970, I was in Hanau, Germany. I was just about to buy a car for my job in Atlanta, when I got the letter that begin with "Greetings". (: Cheers |

Today's Listen: Sonny Rollins -- WAY OUT WEST I have been trying to come up with words to describe the album cover. Best leave it to you Aficionados. This is the most ___________ Jazz cover ever!! Fill in the blank. The winner gets my prized copy of 'Corky Siegel plays the blues'. The Notes: "The general public is not yet aware of Rollins." After reading that sentence it was obvious these notes were too old. Written in 1957. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LmMHG2THHck https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C6Oma0WOALU https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YLWojxCTi2Q Cheers |
In A Sentimental Mood [Abdullah Ibrahim] : Excellent. Ibrahim was always a big fan of Ellington. I have some of his stuff when he was known as Dollar Brand. Cheers |
Local FM station playing both of these tonight. Big Band Sunday. Said the Teddy Wilson, Goodman version was the favorite of George Gershwin. Gene Krupa on drums. Seems to be a Gershwin night. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VMljmORaggE Don't know who this is? Git outta Jazz! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_pUCeEhqM4o Cheers |

Mary Jo, I was listening to 'At Ste Chapelle Winery' yesterday. Some CDs never make it to the shelf because I played them so often they just stay on my desk. Several by Gene Harris. Along with Oscar Peterson, their stuff is ALWAYS enjoyable. Here is your cookie. Enjoy. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gfNIVdnz1FQ Cheers |
Gene Harris’ daughter, Niki, on vocals. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j-_v5PRZGXU Speaking of Jazzing something up. Cheers |
Today's Listen: Stephane Grappelli & Yehudi Menuhin -- THE VERY BEST OF GRAPPELLI & MENUHIN The favorite foreign Jazz player.(French) Sticks close to the American Songbook. Self taught. A difficult instrument for Jazz, but Grappelli makes it work brilliantly. And did for over 80 years at that. I always thought Menuhin was a classical player, I have several classical CDs by him. Maybe he saw the light. These are tunes taken from the CD I have. Could not find the actual CD on youtube. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tmfqsLtKS3Y https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XiiUHKQg4rQ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=evtk_Cl-yPc Didn't plan to include 'Sweet Georgia Brown" but the OP insisted. Cheers |
John Scofield: Very nice. Shall we say, Attempted Grand Theft: Groove. But anything that reminds me of SM has got to be good. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pejJxEs_v-s Heard this at my sister's house in Maryland, bought it as soon as I arrived in Germany. Cheers |
