Jazz for aficionados

I'm going to review records in my collection, and you'll be able to decide if they're worthy of your collection. These records are what I consider "must haves" for any jazz aficionado, and would be found in their collections. I wont review any record that's not on CD, nor will I review any record if the CD is markedly inferior. Fortunately, I only found 1 case where the CD was markedly inferior to the record.

Our first album is "Moanin" by Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers. We have Lee Morgan , trumpet; Benney Golson, tenor sax; Bobby Timmons, piano; Jymie merrit, bass; Art Blakey, drums.

The title tune "Moanin" is by Bobby Timmons, it conveys the emotion of the title like no other tune I've ever heard, even better than any words could ever convey. This music pictures a person whose down to his last nickel, and all he can do is "moan".

"Along Came Betty" is a tune by Benny Golson, it reminds me of a Betty I once knew. She was gorgeous with a jazzy personality, and she moved smooth and easy, just like this tune. Somebody find me a time machine! Maybe you knew a Betty.

While the rest of the music is just fine, those are my favorite tunes. Why don't you share your, "must have" jazz albums with us.

Enjoy the music.

Schubert,

Could not get the Gramophone magazine with the Wynton article.  They did have the Sept issue with the always Gawjus Sophie-Mutter on the cover.   Not her front, just her back, which is just fine.

Inspired me to renew my subscriptions to Gramophone and BBC Music magazines.   I think I will get back into Classical.

The players are a lot better looking than the Jazz crowd. (more women)   Nicer also.   Seldom is heard a discouraging word.

I should be able to order the August issue.

Cheers
***** I think you got the worst record she ever recorded.*****

It wasn't her, it was Monk.   Divas should stick with Ellington, Horace Silver or Broadway   etc......

Schubert,
That war and it's aftermath evokes just one emotion, Sadness.
When my Mom was in her 90's, she moved to Dallas to live with her daughter, my sister.  Of course the first order of business was to find the closest  Baptist church.

She became close friends with a fellow church member who had lost her only child in Nam.   She had a Texas Drawl as big as Texas.  Her whole life revolved around all things associated with veterans and the military.   She attended all the functions of the VFW and American Legion.   She tended the graves of veterans placed flowers on memorial day, and things like that.   These activities were the sole focus of her life.  After 40+ years, she could not step pass his death.   I think about her often.

Most wars have some good things to celebrate.   I can't think of any in the case of Vietnam.   That entire lousy country was not worth the life of even one American Soldier.

Very moving Clip.

I visited the one in Luxembourg.  Patton is buried there also.   Remember, these are just the ones that were not returned to the U.S.   Most were.

Leon Russell:

Very good.   Refreshing.   Played in Texas, but has that Louisiana flavor.

The Blues:

Some folks were imprinted with that sound before they could say the word music.   It never goes away.

Crazy Baby:

Izvrstan!!  Ausgezeichnet!!!   That's the Babe and the Car.   Classic Blue Note album cover art.   The music was not bad either.

I have this on CD, but I kept the LP just for that blue tinged photo.  As they say, suitable for framing.  What a dress, what a car.

Cheers

Please contrast the two performances of the same song.   Note the differences in dress.  It really does matter, and indicates volumes.

Chicago:

When my youngest sister finished college, her first job was as a social worker in Chicago. She was in ’I will change the world' mode.

After her purse was snatched for the third time, she quit. When she left, she left all her pie in the sky, Liberal ideals somewhere on the South Side.

But still, it is considered one of the most livable cities in America. The good parts are very beautiful. Like all cities.

No I have not, but I have heard Silver and Dee Dee.

Like Ella, she can do more with her voice than most guys can with their instruments.

And the man himself with quite a group.

This has to be the most recorded tune in Bebop.

Zap Mama:

The first one, with the bad video, was very good.   reminded me of the CD we both have.

The second one, with the decent video, was a just little too hip-hop-ish for me.   When you see tank tops and baseball caps and t-shirts, noise is sure to follow.  The turntable stuff did not fit with what I thought their music was all about.

But it was also very much European pop.   The sort of thing you would see on European TV.   Remember Boney M?
They are supposed to be fusing or merging European pop music with African music.   The ones I posted on the other thread do that very well.

Nice clips.

Yes, she was awesome.   She always is.   She is also, always different.

One of my favorites.   We don't know how great and important she is.
We will one day.

***** working class also refers to those who are unemployed and can't find a job*****

That's true when the unemployment is a temporary situation.  These folks have been 'unemployed' for generations!!   Some have never known of anyone having a job.   Never!!

I wonder how many folks crossing the southern border have found work while these folks 'can't find a job'.   Millions would be my guess.

slight oversight on your part, i'm sure.

Michael Brecker:

Brilliant Saxophonist. Seems to be a throughly nice guy. I don’t have anything by him as leader. He is on several as part of group.

*****Radical humility I believe is something all the greats share, whatever field of endeavour.*****

I tend to agree with this, however being of great humility in and of itself does imply greatness. Some folks are just so good they can be complete a’holes. They are untouchable and need no one. And some folks have a lot to be humble about.

Enough about nice guys, who were the real a’holes of Jazz?  And great.

Not many, if any, left.    Another Great one from Mississippi.

WOW!!!! You should be writing for the National Enquirer.

Btw, Kennedy is the biggest myth in the world. He is only mentioned when talking to black people. I remember when everyone I in the South had pictures of King, Christ and Kennedy on the walls. What a joke. My family being the exception. :)

What did he do for black people, Nothing. He just acted like he liked them. That’s all it took. So easy.

Lyndon Baines Johnson, LBJ, did more for black people than any president since Lincoln. His problem was, he was a southern white man, so he couldn’t be the hero. So the credit went to Kennedy.

Clinton, another southern white man helped black people by cutting ’welfare’. He didn’t go far enough. Should have ended it all. The exceptions, being Blind, Cripple or crazy.

Based on what you said, we can conclude that during the heyday of auto jobs in Detroit, there were no drug dealers or thugs in Detroit. You did say they would all rather work.

Anyone watching the Ken Burns program on Country Music?

Got me to thinking about Buddy Rich.   He trashed an entire genre of music, and more than once.   I recalled this from the Brecker posts.

*****Radical humility I believe is something all the greats share, whatever field of endeavour.*****

Btw, he, Burns, did not forget Ray Charles.  He can not be given too much credit for his contribution to country music.

Cheers
@keegiam,

I hope you don't think all that is 'breaking news'.

What's your point?   I guess you are another one that thinks black people have a 'right' to be criminals.

I knew guys that cracked at Ft Bragg, NC, during basic training.

Don’t go Hollywood with this stuff. We had a guy from Chester, PA, that went nuts at Redstone Arsenal, AL, while attending Missile school. They were all taken away never to be seen again.

Of course some of it was just a way not to go to Nam. Same in every war.

Sort of like the B17 crews that landed in Switzerland while on bombing missions over Germany. Due to engine trouble of course. Side benefit was they were interned and sat out the war in safety.

Got to be embarrassing to 8th Air Force after a while.

Cheers

Body and Soul:

The Lester Young performance  seemed to be more for dancing.  If fact, you can imagined a dance floor while listening to it.    This is what I call Swing.  The transition from Sax to piano and back again was smooth and the tempo was maintained.  Great playing.  Another hipster from Mississippi.

Bird was faster, and he played the entire tune.  The tempo did changed during the performance.  Not as dance friendly as Prez.   More like, listen to Bird express himself.

My take away.   Bebop is for listening.   Swing is for dancing.

Ad Lib Blues / Cool Blues:

Both great playing.  I have the Prez CD.   Again, the Lester tune is for dancing, the Bird tune for Listening to Bird.

I think it was during this period in Jazz, that Pops felt it necessary to declare, "if you can't dance to it, it ain't Jazz"   A not too subtle swipe at Be-Bop.

Cheers

I have nothing against war.   Some of humanity's finest hours happened during war.   And sometimes war is the only solution to the problem.   And don't forget the major advances in social situations, science and medicine that happen during war.

Also, the climate / environment is in crisis.   The greatest cause from humans, is over population.   There are too many people on this planet.   War helps with that also.

Cheers

Btw, I never go to VA Doctors / hospitals.   There is a special medical license that limits a doctor's practice to, Indian Reservations, Federal prisons and the US Military.    'Nuff said
***** Rok, I could tell you who was working hard to break the former SFRY*****

The death of Tito started them on the road to ruin.  The collapse of the soviet union, and withdrawal of the Red Army from Eastern Europe, meant they were doomed.

The tensions were always there.

***** you are not talking about the one who escalated the war in Vietnam are you" in response to the describing Lyndon Johnson as the person who did the most for blacks. I noticed no response to that!!*****

What’s one thing to do with the other? Although Vietnam was the first war in which all groups in this country fought fully integrated, which went a long way towards cementing civil rights in this country.

***** had he lived he probably would have been the one to sign the Civil Rights bill. Why can’t others accept that?*****

Are you saying people should "accept" something that never happened? Sounds like coulda, shoulda, woulda to me. LBJ actually DID IT. Why can’t you accept that?

Your statements show how illogical and conflicted a lot of people are when it comes to history. There is real history, and then, there is that, that they wish was history. They can’t separate the facts from what they wished had happened.

In ANY society, the ignorant and uninformed, will always be played.

Alex,
The Bible says there will always be wars and rumors of wars.   The Bible also says Cain killed his brother Able when there were only a handful of people in the world.   Now that may not be literally true, but the Bible is a great source of information on human nature and conduct.  The story shows that man will ALWAYS find a reason to fight and kill each other.   Always.

We can also let the record reflect that, Rok2id,  has never started a war.

War not like the movies?   Dang!!   I thought you grabbed your shoulder, shouted "they got me", and then, all your comrades would gather around while you, with your last breath,  dictated an hour long letter to Mom and your girl friend.   You mean to say it's not like that???   is ANYTHING true in the world??

Cheers

Btw, people in your part of the world have been fighting and hating forever.  Til this day.

Mabern died a few days ago.   Wiki says he graduated from Manassas High School in Memphis.   I knew a lot Trumpet players from there.

@keegiam

Just the wording or tone of your posts sounded foreign, to my ears.

Just wondered.     Anyway:
***** You're clearly part of the problem, and you'll never see it.*****

Since  I have never committed a crime, or sold drugs, or taken drugs, or mugged anyone, or robbed anyone, or gotten any girl pregnant outside of marriage, or been a member of a gang, or killed anyone,

But I have helped people all my life as an officer in the military.
Several years ago during desert Storm, I received a phone call at some ungodly hour.  It was from a former soldier of mine.  He was calling from Iraq.   Wanted to thank me for all I had done to help him.

He was a former lookout for a drug gang in Miami.  Judge said jail or Military, he chose Army.   I saw the promise in him, he is now an officer in the US Army.   I have always helped and encouraged those that I felt no one else would encourage.   IF, they were ready.   I got a lot of calls from Iraq and Afghanistan.

So,
I don't understand why I am part of the problem.  Please elaborate.

Cheers
***** I have read quite a few books on the ethnic cleansing in the Balkans in the 90's.*****

Well, you are going to have go back a lot farther than to 90's to have any understanding of the Balkans.   We, Americans, always seem to think that the history of any area or country starts the day we show up.

This could be a good place to start.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y-YIYX3GWtQ

The Serbs, Croats and Muslims all have history that goes back long before the 90's.

Today's Listen:

katia & Marielle Labeque  --  AN AMERICAN IN PARIS / PORGY AND BESS

Got this years ago, almost at the beginning of CD.  From a 'Stereo Review' review. This is a remastered version from 2002.  Mine is from 1984.  Still has the German price tag on it, 37.80 DM.  Made in West Germany!

Notes: "This recording features the world premiere performance of Gershwin's previously unavailable two-piano score of 'An American In Paris."

Anyway, beautiful playing, by the French Sisters, of music written by a unique talent.
