Jazz for aficionados

Jazz for aficionados

I'm going to review records in my collection, and you'll be able to decide if they're worthy of your collection. These records are what I consider "must haves" for any jazz aficionado, and would be found in their collections. I wont review any record that's not on CD, nor will I review any record if the CD is markedly inferior. Fortunately, I only found 1 case where the CD was markedly inferior to the record.

Our first album is "Moanin" by Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers. We have Lee Morgan , trumpet; Benney Golson, tenor sax; Bobby Timmons, piano; Jymie merrit, bass; Art Blakey, drums.

The title tune "Moanin" is by Bobby Timmons, it conveys the emotion of the title like no other tune I've ever heard, even better than any words could ever convey. This music pictures a person whose down to his last nickel, and all he can do is "moan".

"Along Came Betty" is a tune by Benny Golson, it reminds me of a Betty I once knew. She was gorgeous with a jazzy personality, and she moved smooth and easy, just like this tune. Somebody find me a time machine! Maybe you knew a Betty.

While the rest of the music is just fine, those are my favorite tunes. Why don't you share your, "must have" jazz albums with us.

Enjoy the music.

A must-have for any music lover.  Not Jazz, but great stuff.   I have had this one for years, but it has just recently been posted to you-tube.,

My favorite track -- The Old Kentucky Shore.   Approx.  30:48 -- Check the violin.

Mosaic Boxed Sets:

9 CD set of Mingus!!!   I imagine 6000 alternate takes,  plus all the music I already have,  plus tons of perfunctory stuff that Mingus never meant to see the light of day.

I am sure there are a few gems I don't have,  but I have most of what the unwashed has declared to be essential.   The unwashed:  that would be us aficionados.

The same reason I don't have the 7 CD Sonny Rollins set, which I really wanted,  or the Coltrane Heavyweight Champion set.   I already  had the individual CDs.

*****Curious, Alex, how can one tell who a deleted post is from?  *****

I don't remember why it was, but previously, until I changed it,  all the posts on this thread were sent to my mail box on AOL.   Not only could you see who sent deleted posts, you could read the deleted post as well.

Cheers

It was just too much in my mail box, so I stopped it.

*****I gave him a warning when he publicly insulted Frogman*****

First of all, The Frogman does his share of insulting.

He does not need your 'protection'

And who the hell are you to be 'warning' folks?

People here pretty much say what they want.  Don't like it, move on.

This is not an 'Audiophile' thread.

No sacred cows here.

Cheers

First of all, I don't even know what the issue was between O-10 and Inna.

I don't even know what the alleged 'insult' was.   I don't even care.

But, he 'threatened' to delete all his posts because O-10 didn't heed his 'warnings'.    WTF!!!!   Just because O-10 had the temerity to "insult" The Frogman.  hahahahahhahahhahaha

Now, The Frogman insults people on an almost daily basis.  He uses polite language, but he insults them nevertheless.   Maybe he thinks we are not smart enough to understand it.   As if, he has to use cuss words or vulgar words for us to 'get' the insult.

News flash to The Frogman:   We went to school also.

Now, no insult was intended by this post.   Cause Lord knows, I don't want to come under 'Frogman minion' attack.

Cheers

My most expensive CD.   I paid over 40 dollars for some Japanese pressing of this album.   Not for any audiophile reason, it was just the only place I could find it at the time.    Great tunes, plus I just had to have that cover picture.   Play at volume.

Ben Cranshaw.    Sort of like Mingus on piano playing  'hog callin' blues'.   Holds and ties it together.

My favorite cut off that album.

*****mary_jo, in my book the best indication of a person’s character is his/her evenhandedness and sense of fairness; not to mention, logic.  You demonstrate all.******

Logic is probably the least desirable trait in a person of 'good' character.   Logic can take you anywhere.

*****(I sincerely hope no one is “insulted” by the above info 😇)*****

The insult is so obvious, I feel silly pointing it out.

First, you know The OP and I are big Mingus fans, you also know we don't have the album 'Epitaph".    Sooooo, you announce that "no Mingus collection would be complete without  'epitaph'".

Making the OP of the only Jazz thread on this site look bad.;.

You think we can't see this????

You think we be stupid??

Cheers

O-10, it was a legitimate question.  Don't fall for all the smoke and mirrors from The Frogman.

The question, is pertaining this Tune, with this lineup.  Very simple.   Does not have anything to do with the 'best' anything.   None of this 'suppose this' and 'suppose that'.

CAUTION:  STRAW-MAN AT WORK.

I find it hard to consider Henderson a Sideman, although it is Morgan's album.   He would be a good answer also.

Paul Chambers:

Now that is a very impressive list.   When ever I see his name on CDs I own, and there are many, I always feel like this is going to be a top notch performance.

Can't believe he lived such a short life.   He must have worked constantly.

Cheers

*****Rok, how many times have we seen this scenario?*****

Many, many times,  starting in  2013.   It's easier to count the stars in the heavens, or the noise-makers at Juilliard.

Cheers

Nina Simone:

I like some of her stuff.   A lot of it is borderline whining.  Never thought of her stuff as being particularly sophisticated.   Was it even Jazz?   But like Dylan, she was great, for and at, a certain period of time.   I think the civil rights movement killed her career.

Cheers

Well at least they aren't trading insults.   Inna will be pleased.

When The Frogman Marshals his Minions, it's best just to chill out with your favorite Jazz CD / LP until the howling subsides.   It won't last long.  They will soon forget what he told them to say.

He's even got The Jazz Queen all excited.

Now, back to my latest acquisition,   Count Basie -- Complete Live at the Crescendo 1958.   I turn it up, and it drowns out the annoying drivel.

Cheers

My introduction to Dinah Washington was through the records she made with Brooke Benton.   I love to hear her say, "one more time Brooke". :)

Found her again later when I got into Jazz.  Very good singer who is blessed with a unique voice.   Instant recognition..

Cheers
I can remember when the Delmark Label meant the Blues. :(

My brother bought that Shearing / Staton LP when it came out, back in the day.  I never got pass staring at the album cover.   Some images never leave the brain.

Cheers

Slow Freight:

I believe this is the first Jazz LP I ever purchased.

Never found it on CD.

Today’s Listen:

Count Basie & His Atomic Band -- COMPLETE LIVE AT THE CRESCENDO 1958

Five CD box set. Sound quality is great. In the same class as ’100 best jazz recordings of the 50’s’.

Nice booklet with pictures and history.

Questions to The Frogman:

Was Neal Hefti, Basie’s ’Strayhorn’?

Cheers

I was thinking more along these lines.   Didn't they have a record store online, in Chicago I think.   Have a ton of blues CDs from them.

https://delmark.com/blues-artists/

I do have The Roscoe Mitchell Sextet on Delmark.  The title of the CD is 'SOUND'. :)   Includes Lester Bowie.   Which reminds me, I need to hear 'I only have eyes for you' tonight.

Favorite Williams, or just favorites?

BTW, I still have a visual image in my head of the page on which her music was reviewed. Stereo Review or Jazz Times, I think.

'Zodiac Suite' was  the CD.

Today's Listen and Lesson:

John Coltrane -- BOTH DIRECTIONS AT ONCE : THE LOST TAPES

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sIv4elylwsA

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=erlJD3Qo50c

Recorded in 1963.  Released in 2018.  WTF,  you may ask.

2CD set.

The booklet is almost as compelling as the music.  It gives the history of these recordings and an insight into the record business of that era.

The record labels used to record and hoard the music, not releasing it until they felt the economic / market situation was most favorable to their bottom line.

Coltrane, and others, would complain about fans wanting them to play their 'latest' hits, when in fact Coltrane had moved on.   They were asking for music he had recorded years previous, but had just been released.

When Impulse was bought by ABC and moved to LA, many unreleased tapes by Coltrane and others were thrown out to save on 'storage costs'.  Makes a man want to cry.

We have these recordings because of tapes Coltrane gave his ex-wife, Naima.  If not for that action, all of this would have been lost, along with the countless gems that were thrown in the trash to save a few bucks.

LESSON:  Do not let outsiders control or define your art.

Cheers

****Trane is so soothing that I have been listening for some time now****

Soothing, is the perfect word.

Today’s Mary Lou:

Mary Lou Williams -- MY MAMA PINNED A ROSE ON ME

From the notes:

"At one time in my career, I felt that the Blues or Boogie-Woogie were Kindergarten music...a style of music and playing I should be ashamed of........But then I made the great discovery that all the music, even up to Coltrane and beyond, was based on the Blues and the Blues feeling. Coltrane had this feeling of love in all his music..........

Mary Lou Williams.

Today’s Mary Lou:

Mary Lou Williams -- ZONING

Excellent, informative booklet. When you consider what she accomplished, and especially, WHEN she accomplished it, you can only imagine what might have been. A true giant.

Sadly most of her music did not make it to CD.

O-10,

Glad you liked the old stuff.  It was a fun time.   People put down a lot of the music, but at least it was good for having fun.  What else is the point of being young?

Sort of like disco.  It's so 'hip' to bash it, but we all loved it.   I just don't know what to do with my 14 Nehru jackets.(assorted colors)

I once heard Maynard  being played on a stereo system outside in  the PX parking lot in Furth, Germany..  We thought it was a real band and ran to the music.   Turned out to be Maynard, on LP,  Sony flat driver speakers and Phase Linear amps.  Wow!  I bought the LP that same day.

*****Rok, at the Lincoln Center, they delight in trying to fit square pegs in round holes.*****

True, I just wonder,  is it Wynton, or the people he answers to.

Cheers

You could get arrested for dancing to the Ohio Players.   That is, if you danced to the music.

The Piano Choir:

Nice enough, but, I never know what is the purpose  of music like this.

I get in the mood for Jazz, spirituals, Motown, R&B, Classical, even Christmas music.   I can't see myself ever being in the mood to listen to this.

Probably nice to see live.

Wynton Marsalis -- UNITED WE SWING (update)

After receiving this CD  and listening to all the tracks, I have concluded that Wynton tends to take Inclusion, Diversity and PC,  just a little bit too far.  There are several artist on this CD that don't play Jazz and don't 'swing' in any genre.

I sometimes think that Willie Nelson has made it his life's ambition to destroy Jazz and Blues singled handed.   He should stick to country.   He's great there.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9NgUhVhc8Vc

Also, Audra McDonald was wasted.   Surely they could have found something to suit her awesome talent.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-zOlugtNz0k

But thru it all, the band cooks.   The best band playing today.

Cheers

The Frogman Lives!!!!

We were speaking of Willie Nelson and Bob Dylan and Lyle Levett etc......being on a Jazz CD by the country's  premier Jazz band.   Especially with the word 'Swing' in the title.

Never heard Bird playing with Hank Snow.    Just saying.

And of course you are looking for controversy.   It's ok.   This thread strives on controversy.

Cheers

Recent purchase.

This guy can sing like they used to sing back in the day. He is from Europe, so I am not sure if he has the intangible thingy. The right touch. He was part of the Playing for Change project.

*****Should I expect you to like it just because I like it? I think not.*****

You think right.

Everything and everyone is judged by what and who went before them.   Going back in time, suppose you had tickets to a concert featuring Miles, or Morgan  etc...,  and Trane or Henderson  etc...., and when you got there you heard and saw what was on that clip.
