Jazz for aficionados

Jazz for aficionados

I'm going to review records in my collection, and you'll be able to decide if they're worthy of your collection. These records are what I consider "must haves" for any jazz aficionado, and would be found in their collections. I wont review any record that's not on CD, nor will I review any record if the CD is markedly inferior. Fortunately, I only found 1 case where the CD was markedly inferior to the record.

Our first album is "Moanin" by Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers. We have Lee Morgan , trumpet; Benney Golson, tenor sax; Bobby Timmons, piano; Jymie merrit, bass; Art Blakey, drums.

The title tune "Moanin" is by Bobby Timmons, it conveys the emotion of the title like no other tune I've ever heard, even better than any words could ever convey. This music pictures a person whose down to his last nickel, and all he can do is "moan".

"Along Came Betty" is a tune by Benny Golson, it reminds me of a Betty I once knew. She was gorgeous with a jazzy personality, and she moved smooth and easy, just like this tune. Somebody find me a time machine! Maybe you knew a Betty.

While the rest of the music is just fine, those are my favorite tunes. Why don't you share your, "must have" jazz albums with us.

Enjoy the music.

Jazz will survive as long as humanity does . Looking out for next 100 years about a 50/50 proposition .
Thanks Mary Jo. I knew it was a hard piece but not that hard .Seemed  like a miracle to me .
rok2id, I disremember the musician I heard say it(Andre Previn ?)but I never forgot it .
" Rock and Roll, the Hamburger that ate the World "  .
jafant,
Its not in any history book because it is not true , the usual reason .
And no Italians were sold at the slave block at Ellis Island and families
thrown to the 4 winds . To overcome that in Socializing takes about 300 years on average .
From a Christian point of view you are to speak against against the wrong
at all times and all places no matter what .

O-10 is a better and braver American  than anyone else on this post,
and not by a little bit .
True,
I carried the M-16 rifle , the civilian version is the AR-15 that murdered
the kids in FL, for 18 months, was badly wounded and know what these weapons of war are for, to kill people .
.
Those who love our country are like good parents , they see the faults and try to correct them .
They never say the fight is over, they always fight on .
You are a good American fighting the good fight on your front .

I've seen Karrin Allyson  live 3 times in last 2 years, just as good live
as in recording  if not better !
frogperson.

You next move is to hit Delhi or what ever town is nearest and buy all the veggy seeds you can and plant them .Also 22 . rifle and lots of ammo for rabbits and such .A 243 rifle for deer won’t be a bad move either.USA is doing worse than anyone , I wonder why ?

Native Americans have been telling us for 300 years that everything is connected to everything else. But we knew better.
Mother nature bats last .
No nerve required . Do what Native Americans did/do when you kill the game, for eating to stay alive not for "sport", thank the animal and the creator for keeping you and your family alive.
It could come to that .
A shotgun is a good self - defense weapon as well .So is a 22 . rifle for that matter.Gun Nuts say it isn’t but nobody wants to stand in front of one ,
I wouldn’t wait to buy either .
243 Winchester is the best caliber for deer , esp. if you’re new to hunting, gets the job done without much kick. I killed my first deer with a 30-30lever action rifle at age 12 . I felt remorse as well , any good hunter does .

Yes Delhi is a nice town , a lot of folks would do better at the good 2 year rprograms at SUNY Delhi , which is a jewel, than running up debt at University .

For all , when frog says it’s beautiful in upstate NY he’s not kidding .I’ve been all over the world and it’s the most beautiful place I’ve ever seen .
Period .

And the Adirondack Mountains  to the North are more beautiful than  that!

And the Finger Lakes to the west are the most beautiful lake district  on this planet .

According to what I heard live Sunday , Frogman's homey , Anthony McGill, is the most lyrical wind player this side of Heinz Holliger .
2 hours for 25$ .

You got that right pryso, Etta James belongs to the small group that are "Forces of Nature " .  Beyond all review or causality .
To my hears Billy Taylor put out the best piano-violin piece I know about .

P.S . THIS  IS A FANTASTIC CLIP  than anyone will LEARN FROM !!
frogman , Thanks for linking those Recomande- Henderson cuts , what a joy to hear a band in service of the music , those guys had a LOT to say . about as good as it gets !

Yes, I caught on to the classical bent right away . Listen to all 3 times to try and figure out whether the guys or the arrangements were the reason ,came to conclusion must be some of both .Much as I love the big swing-era bands , none of them had anything like the skills of the Henderson players . Should be mandatory listening in ALL American schools of music !
I doubt anyone has done as suave a rendition of this great standard .
The fact that is done in the language it was written in plays a significant part .

Not to mention it is the worlds most beautiful tongue .

mary jo. Time and time again you show us men what we are without women in every situation . Fools !

I believe it is no accident that women lead the lands that do best .( except England )
I can't even imagine a more soulful duo than Ray and Aretha !Or a more soulful  trio than them and Etta James .
Frog and Rok, if you haven’t seen it already, try the" Luciano Pavarotti
Listening to Giuseppe Di Stefano" clip on You Tube .Brings tears to my eyes . The world is a poorer place without the "big guy" !
Great minds must think alike Frogman , those were my exact thoughts when Al  laid down that line !My ears went out about 6 inches because the great beauty of Bjoerling's
voice was THE  thing that brought me to classical and my respect for Previn was how i came to appreciate jazz .

Rok21d. that outing from Les and Eddie is a blast ! Got to get that Generation Gap !!
Too right , O-10 . With " You Go to My Head" Pepper was the guy dreaming about it. Wayne Shorter with Lee Morgan was the guy taking care of business ,
This kind of pure music from Hadar and Chano  is for all  music lovers !
Te deseo lo mejor  buen catskill verano .
Thanks , :) O-10 , to be honest I never heard that song , haunting .Dakota was good , but Dinah Washington is in the "force of nature "category IMO .
Hang in there ..
Thanks so much 0-10, made my day.

All our souls will fly away sometime , my time is not far away and all I will get for a send-off is the Army’s dog ,"Caissons Go Rolling Along" .Marines and Sailors do a lot better as "Marines Hymn" and "Anchors Away"are both quite stirring .

But, truth be told my friend, you get the best of the bunch , "The Wild Blue Yonder " played by the Magnificent USAF Band !
The early recordings, as in VERY early, of Carmen McRae showed a perfect voice as clear as a mountain spring ! If you did not know who it was you would never guess it was Carmen .
O-10 Thanks for the Carmen , The voice I'm talking about was about at least a decade before your clips .
Her early voice was even much better than on the clip Frogman gave us .At one time I had the first  recording she ever made, if memoryserves me right(which it often does not) it was made right after WW II .I believe there is a CD of it.
THANKS Frogman, The young Carmen was even better on the upbeat pieces, she put the R in rhythm , job  # 1 in jazz !
Not that I really know, how could I , but I have a gut feeling that Carmen was the most intelligent of all the jazz divas .
In any human endeavor we all stand on the shoulders of those gone before us .
frogman, a new one on me, yesterday in my car I heard both a saxophone and a clarinet quartet play the Grieg" Hall of the Mountain King" one after the other . Sounded very good !Sadly , station did not mention who they were .
Mary Jo , move to USA, many people don’t know their neighbors names.
0-10 , you are not the only one just the one most focused on male- female relationships .
At least in public .
EVERYBODY should watch this clip, it is the most uplifting I have made and one of the best I have ever seen !
Teared me up as I keep thinking , What if , What if, at present time .

I have memories , but perhaps not as many as most .

I was born wise enough to know women are not here for me to play
with.
Every time you have sex with someone you give them some of yourself .

Do it enough and you end up with nothing to give .

I have gone as far as telling women who asked ME for a one-nighter
why it would not be for good for them when I really would have liked to.

Those are good memories .

Most people are just not serious about music of any genre . A rock concert looks like a sheep farm to me, not that I ever went to one .More of a "social"  outing  than a musical  event .Pass the dope please.

Any study I've ever seen has 5% of US population listening to jazz and classical combined , comes to about 10% in the few major cities
where choral music  is big . NYC, Mpls., Chicago and Seattle basically .
.
