Jazz for aficionados

Jazz for aficionados

I'm going to review records in my collection, and you'll be able to decide if they're worthy of your collection. These records are what I consider "must haves" for any jazz aficionado, and would be found in their collections. I wont review any record that's not on CD, nor will I review any record if the CD is markedly inferior. Fortunately, I only found 1 case where the CD was markedly inferior to the record.

Our first album is "Moanin" by Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers. We have Lee Morgan , trumpet; Benney Golson, tenor sax; Bobby Timmons, piano; Jymie merrit, bass; Art Blakey, drums.

The title tune "Moanin" is by Bobby Timmons, it conveys the emotion of the title like no other tune I've ever heard, even better than any words could ever convey. This music pictures a person whose down to his last nickel, and all he can do is "moan".

"Along Came Betty" is a tune by Benny Golson, it reminds me of a Betty I once knew. She was gorgeous with a jazzy personality, and she moved smooth and easy, just like this tune. Somebody find me a time machine! Maybe you knew a Betty.

While the rest of the music is just fine, those are my favorite tunes. Why don't you share your, "must have" jazz albums with us.

Enjoy the music.

Not related to Jazz, but since this is a smart crowd:

Does anyone understand the real relationship between Humans, The Engineers and The Xenomorphs?

The more I read, the more confused I get.

***** I however had to study Bartok and Stravinsky and not Monk.*****

What does this statement mean?  'Had To' ???

Today's Listen:

Harry Edison / Eddie Davis  --  IN COPENHAGEN: SWEETS & LOCKJAW

Absolutely wonderful album.  Outstanding playing and sound quality.   Even you folks into ancient technologies will like it.  The way Jazz should be.

Btw,
Who made you the decider in Chief of what is and what is not good jazz?
I'm self-appointed, therefore, I cannot be fired. :)
Highly unusual.

My Mistake.  There are 12 tracks, four of them were recorded before the musical opened, but it's not relevant, because, although the music appears on the CD, it was not part of the musical.   They went into the studio to record 'Fiddler' the month after it opened.  Which is still sort of soon.

Fiddler opened Sept 22, 1964.   Cannonball went into the studio to record on Oct 19, 1964.

Thanks

Cheers

Who, pray tell, decided that either of them was the best Jazz album ever?

Smells like those interlopers at Juilliard.  If you can't play it, redefine it.

I wonder what the folks in New Orleans thought / think.  Kansas City?

Just one Frenchman's opinion.

Cheers

******Who, pray tell, decided that either of them was the best Jazz album ever?*****

And the answer is:   Noah  Lefevre !!

Cheers

What about the other 6,293,189 Jazz albums?   Not even an honorable mention?

The two best Jazz albums in creation, both with almost the same lineup.  Wow.   What a load of BS.

No Monk, No Ellington, No Mingus, No Morgan  etc.......stop and think people.

Cheers

Well, I waited a decent amount of time, but still no comment on the outrageous, disgusting, pathetic, and ridiculous circus in Detroit.

*****Looks like the great unwashed have spoken*****

If you are speaking of the so-called popularity of KOB and SE, I think it's more like the Eastern 'Elite' opinion makers have spoken.

The best way to judge how good Jazz albums are, is to ask yourself, which ones do I listen to the most.

One of my copies of KOB is still in the cello wrap. (SACD).   It's important, but that's not the same as being one of the best.

Cheers

Everyone: Which Jazz records do you play most often?

My top five CDs is no particular order:

Marsalis -- Marsalis and Clapton play the blues

Mingus -- Oh Yeah

Ellington -- At Newport

Masekela -- Best of: Grazing in the grass

Gene Harris -- In His Hands

Tunes I play most often:

Coltrane -- My Favorite Things (mainly to hear McCoy)

Lester Bowie -- I only have eyes for you

Keeping in mind that Jelly Roll said Jazz was a way of playing music.

Cheers

*****Rok, which circus are you referring to, be more specific. Are you referring to what happens when people are left without jobs, "means to earn a living"; then the same conditions exist in Chicago, St'. Louis, LA, and all of the other major cities. *****

Hold on Comrade. :)   I was speaking of Aretha's 'funeral'.  Not the big three auto makers and their capitalist running dogs.

Iranian Jazz?  Jazz from Armenia?  The Jazz Queen of Croatia's greatest hits?   I guess being an Aficionado ain't what it used to be.

For context, the following clips, posted by the world renowned Jazz expert, me,  were roundly booed and trashed by these same people.

*****Do you have a factual source to backup that claim?*****

Not a claim, it's a fact.    Google, "Lt. Jimmy Reese Europe".   Surprised a Jazz lover has not heard of him.

*****Even if true when Django arrived here and started playing, his fellow jazz musicians including Satchmo and the Duke were in awe!*****

Do you seriously think Pops and  The Duke were "in awe" of this guy?

They were just being nice and charitable, as they always were in public.

Cheers

*****A most important influence to all "jazz guitarists" who came later:*****

Any influence this guy had, came from America.  Most likely in the form of Lt. Jimmy Reese Europe, and his Hell-Fighter Band during World War l.  They introduced Europe to Jazz.

New York National Guard I believe.  Harlem in particular.

***** I hereby hand over the coveted and previously held title of “Wikiman” 😊*****

Too late.   The title of Wiki-man and Straw-man were both retired the last time you received them.

Isn’t it amazing how every time The Frogman opens his mouth, all his little minions, as if on cue, jump in with support. Brings to mind, the North Korean military on parade. I actually LOL.

*****Frog’s "My brother!" reference has much more substance.*****

What a silly thing to say. I probably shouted "my brother" when I first heard Coltrane, and I can’t play a lick.

Wiki --

Before debating any article, first, determine who wrote it. I can quote any Book, from the Bible to Mein Kampf. It don’t mean a thing. EVERYONE has an agenda. Especially The Frogman.

***** if Jimmy Reese was instrumental (!) in introducing American jazz to Europe, that he influenced Reinhardt? Or that Reinhardt even ever heard him? *****

See, this is a good example of the twisted logic these folks use. Django never heard of Reese, therefore he could not be influenced by him, (BS btw) BUT, every Jazz player in New Orleans was ’influenced’ by every person and group on planet earth. I didn’t know they were such world travelers.

Insidious -- having a gradual and cumulative effect. Subtle.

When reading any article about Jazz or Black music in general, remember this word. INSIDIOUS.

Examples in the recent articles.

"European Military Band Music".

European Military Bands? There were billions of marching bands in New Orleans, both black and white. Hell, Sousa might still have been alive. He was director of the US Marine Corps Band. The US Military has hundreds of bands.

In fact, Pops said if it had not been for segregation in New Orleans, there might have never been anything like Jazz. He said all the black guys would have been in the marching bands playing Sousa.

BUT, they had to get that word ’European’ in the discussion.

"Introducing American Jazz Music to Europe"

American Jazz? What other kind was there? And played by who?

implication: there was Jazz in Europe before Reese, just not "American’ Jazz.

People used to read to gain knowledge, now, you have to have a lot of knowledge before you read.

The President is right. There is, and has always been, a lot of fake news out there.

Sounds nice, but does not hold up under scrutiny.

The only Black people who lost their homes, were the ones brought here by force.   All the rest were born here.   This is their home.

I am not sure Gypsies or Roma, have a home.   India?

I confess.   I listen to Christmas Music year round.

Ran across this on the tube.   Will see if CDs exist.

The African and Middle Eastern 'influences'  and not too prominent.  But you just can't get away from that Roma stuff.

Cheers

I may have spoken to soon concerning the straw-man award.

*****His ramblings about Pops and Duke not liking Django's music and just being charitable*****

I implied that Pops and Ellington were not 'in awe' of Django.   Nothing about like or dislike.

Influence / influenced -- sort of like the word 'culture'.  Used often, and most often misused.

***Bigot:  a person who is intolerant toward those holding different opinions.***

Bigot -- very superficial definition.   I am intolerant of many things.   Most of them bad.  Nazis and Communists come to mind.

Cheers

Soul:

A  label I detest.  Every time they refer to Aretha Franklin as a 'soul' singer I cringe.

One of the great voices / singers of the 20th century is being pigeonholed in some small musical niche created by god knows who.

I guess Ray Charles was a 'soul' singer also.

paraphrasing,    The power to define, is the power to control.  To limit.

Cheers

******And who is it that has “left” the thread a few times huffing and puffing due to disagreement? 😖*****

That would be The Frogman.  His pouting episodes are legendary.

Cheers

*****So hereafter I’ll refrain from commenting on anything he says, regardless of my reaction to it. *****

Typical ’audiophile’ attitude. It goes like this: "If we can’t agree that I will be right at least 50% of the time, I just won’t participate".

I think we started in 2013.

Cheers

*****When you get right down to it the thing is why would you make post that comment at all?... Think about it*****

I don't have to think about it.  I know why I made the statement.   This thread has a history of promoting noise makers by posting positive comments made by big time Jazz players.   So and so can really play, MINGUS said bah bah bah, Cannonball praised him, Pops said he will be a star  etc........

I am not saying Django was a noise maker.   I like his music, especially the stuff he did with Grappelli.

My point is this, given the 'social conditions' that prevailed at the time we are discussing, black musicians never criticized other musicians when asked to comment.   They had nothing to gain by being negative and maybe a lot to lose.

Therefore, we can ignore all comments made by the greats concerning other players.

As the great NY Giants and Dallas Cowboy football coach, Bill Parcells always said, "You are, what your record says you are".  No more no less.

Pops is Pops, Ellington is Ellington and Django is Django  etc.......... No matter who says what.

Cheers

Damn.   Where are my minions  errr I mean followers?   I'm under attack here.

I'll answer in the morning.   I never get a chance to say anything because I spend all my time correcting you people.

Cheers

*****Try posting music instead of antagonizing. And, please, we don’t need the same clips for the third, fourth or more times. *****

Hahahaha   The Frogman Strikes back.   I think I post the best clips on this thread.

btw, Just because you say something does not make it true.

Cheers

*****Nonsense, find me and post ONE reference from a credible source to the notion that “black musicians never criticized other musicians when asked to comment*****

Show me ONE example of a big time black Jazz player making negative comments about a white player, when asked to comment by a media or Jazz critic type.   Just ONE example.   I wait with bated breath.

Bireli Lagrene:

The guy is a virtuoso.  He can really play the guitar.

Didn't see too much emotion from him, and didn't hear too much in the music.   But it was good.

On the TV series 'Star Trek: Next Generation'  there is character called DATA.  He is an Android.   He plays the violin.  He can play perfectly any music ever written on his violin.   He can even play in the style of any of the  great violinist in history.  Imitate them perfectly.

But, he, and his  audiences, know that something is missing.

Cheers

pjw:

I say EXACTLY what I intend to say.   Each word is important.  Read.  All your responses were based on something I didn't say.

The Parcells thingy:  'Record' in this case means the totality of what and who the player is / was,  in the world of Jazz and Music.

Miles was Miles, and Ellis was Ellis.   Parcells would say they have different 'records'.

The Frogman:

I stand by my post, despite the Miles thingy .   Btw, I knew if you found something it would be Miles.  It does not change the truthfulness of what I posted.  And guess what, you know that.

Cheers

I was speaking of Mr. DATA.   I said both HE and his Audience felt something was missing.  It's part of the ongoing plot of the show. Maybe you are not a fan of the show.  Mr DATA's goal in his existence is to become more 'human'.

I am sure Mr. Lagrene's fans just love him to death.

I think I need to Watch the Acman3 clip again.

Cheers

Maybe my greatest contribution to this thread would be to start giving classes in English.

Cheers

Acman, that hit the spot.   That's just how it is, when trying to communicate on this thread.

What will I be teaching in English?   Jazz appreciation 101.

Cheers

I

Influence:

1. If I say I was Influenced by Coltrane, maybe they will say I sound / play like Coltrane.

2. saying I was influenced by Miles, just means I wish I could play like Miles.

3. Saying I was influenced by a Jazz great means they say my name in the same sentence with that great.

*****From your previous statement I guess that you equal the ideas of communism with the regime of Stalin in Soviet Union. Communism in it’s true definition (moneyless, stateless, classless) never existed. What was in former SSSR was the abuse of communism ideas. *****

Not at all. Never mentioned Stalin. I equate communism with the teachings and philosophy of Marx and Engels. Their ideas are bad enough as it is, Stalin’s attempt to implement them just shows how evil they are.

Maybe my first encounter with Jazz.

I was away at college, my first night away from home, in the band dorm, and some hot shot trumpet players from Memphis, played this tune all night, or so it seemed, on their record player.  We became great friends.
