@orpheus10 Les Baxter:
Did you notice the comments under the clip that compared him to, or said they were reminded of Stravinsky? We all know Stravinsky, don't we? He's that guy that ranks right up there with Mozart!!! Les Baxter is in tall cotton indeed!!

It can be authentic, be from an indigenous group, be a heart-felt performance, be primitive, be original, and be unique, and still be BORING!

The answer is this:
This has nothing to do with music, it has to do with constant effort to deny the accomplishments of black Americans. ALL music indigenous to the United States is from black folks. Black folks from the U.S. South. Some folks, mainly the Eastern 'Elites', self-proclaimed of course, just can't stomach that fact. Hence, all this African BS.

@orpheus10 OK, I confess. I liked the clip of Miss Dee Dee and the guys from Mali. I Heard a lot of Africa and Asia in the music. Even Chinese. But, alas, no Delta Blues. Beautiful music from a very messed up place. I considered buying that CD several months ago, but decided to get this one instead. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y2MVmC55T5sCheers |

I need to check out Discogs. I am really getting into used CDs. I am well satisfied with ebay, so far. Cheers |

Nice enough 'cool' Jazz. The album cover art is totally out of place, for a Jazz album.

Today's pleasant Surprise: Received this yesterday. Rene Marie -- VOICE OF MY BEAUTIFUL COUNTRY https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nO5KwTfqmZgVery unusual concept in this day and age. An album, expressing love for this country. She does take a small shot of the purple stuff in the liner notes, but all in all, a breath of freshness and nicely done. I think I love this woman. Also have 'Sounds Of Red'. Will report later. Cheers |
I just love it when The Frogman points out the finer details of the music. It makes it all the more enjoyable and appreciated.
The voice on the Montgomery clip may have been Miles' Mama. O-10 said she had special 'powers'.
Cheers |
*****my wife bought me tickets to see Renee Marie at The Jazz Standard in NYC for my birthday.*****
One of the great advantages of living in the Big Apple. You get to see these magicians up close and in person.
The big disadvantage is, you then don't live in Texas. :)

Received this yesterday also. Not Jazz, but there nothing I like better than hearing current, serious artist, go back and cover the classics. They often times do them better than the originals. Mainly due to better recording technology and better / different arrangements / orchestration. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D12fn1a-MesCheers |
Billie Holiday:
I have the same problem with her that I have with Bird. One of the all time greats, but her recordings often lack in sound quality and her personal life seems to always be front and center. The voice seems to always close to cracking. They inflicted the 'strings' on her also. Sad case.
Cheers

O-10, we are on a very, very political correct internet site. They even deleted me once. I know that's hard to believe, but true.

*****
her voice seems like is close to cracking but that doesn't bother me a bit and from my point of view *****
Maybe it does not bother you one bit, and i'm sure we see her from different points of view. Being from a foreign country, I would not expect you to see and relate to her as I do.
*****
You may not like her but surely cannot stay indifferent, 'cause this lady delivers strongly. *****
I never said I didn't like her, and I am hardly indifferent, in fact, the opposite is true. To me her life is a tragedy. A tragedy played out countless times in this country, especially in the Jazz world.
*****
Maybe people like her precisely because of her 'crack in the voice'. The perfect imperfection.*****
Maybe people in Croatia do. Maybe some people who only think of her as a voice on a CD.
Context is everything.

Seems as if I was in a "ruckus" without even realizing it. let me clarify: What upset me was that you seem to say that Billie's rough life helped her as a singer. Like being a prostitute at age 14, and being a drug addict, gives you 'soul' and 'passion' in your music. All BS, of course. Billie was failed by everyone in her life that she should have been able to trust. Under American Law a 14 year old girl cannot even give consent to have sex, so how in the hell can she be a $5 pro. Where were the adults??? I cringe when I hear her voice because I think of her age. She sounded like she was 85, when age-wise, she should have been in her prime. She was dead at age 44. SAD CASE!! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Billie_HolidayRead the whole sad sorry mess. As great as she was, second only to Ella, she was no where near close to what she could have been. Cheers |

Maybe it has something to do with the saying, "paint the town red".
Lizz Wright is also doing something not usually done, reclaiming Blacks folks rightful place as Southerners. Maybe the most Southern of all Americans.

Very nice!! Dig the people working in the kitchen. They seem oblivious to the entire thing. :) She comes across as a genuinely nice person. This is at homeless shelter type place. What a thoughtful thing to do. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dUsgnI78VXwCheers |
@p
*****
I wouldn't say "helped her" but I have little doubt her "rough" experiences had a huge impact on her adult personality, sensitivity, and general perspective on life. And that must have come out in the ways she expressed herself in her singing.*****
I agree. We are all products of our environment and life experiences. Well said.

Let me clear up the confusion. The statement you attribute to O-10, was actually posted by me. O-10 re-posted it, as a reference, and forgot to put it in *** or """ marks, so it seemed as if he was making the statement for the first time.
I originally got upset because the Jazz Queen from Croatia posted words to the effect that she "didn't care one bit as to the quality of Billie's voice", without having any idea as to why her voice, and health in general, had deteriorated so early in her life. We were not giving an objective critique of her voice, but speaking of it as an indication of her troubled life. In that sense, I do care why she sounds as she does.
Hope this clears it up. O-10 is innocent. This time.

You do realize the 10 CD set from Mosiac costs 180 dollars, U.S.!!!
But it includes more than just Bird. I have always wanted to buy a Mosiac set. I will have to research this. Thanks for the tip.

Everyone, worthy of being called an aficionado is interested in Be-bop. There is pre-bebop, Bebop, and then a sea of noise.
I have the Bird Savoy recordings on LP. Which means I can't listen to them without investing in a turntable and all the nonsense that goes with that. I notice that items that used to cost a few bucks, back in the day of Dual and Thorens, now cost hundreds. What's an Audiophile to do?
For some reason, Bird and Dizzy, were never among my favorites. I have their music, but seldom listen to it.
Cheers
|
@pryso :
I have that Cd also. Great tune and personnel lineup, but uneven recording quality. "All The Things You Are" is totally messed up.
I always got the feeling that Bird and Dizzy felt their primary mission was to 'sell' Bebop to their peers and the Jazz public. I felt as if most of their recordings were exhibitions or demonstrations.

Gene Harris: Good to see my main man get a little notice. To me, he is like Oscar Peterson, in that they make music that is never irritating and never gets tiresome after repeated listening. Always had a smile on his face. His music would put a smile on the listeners face. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VYbH4dnjCCE"Soul Jazz" was a term or label, used to imply that the music was too 'simple' and accessible to the masses, to be real jazz. Real Jazz had to be 'intellectual', esoteric, and could only be defined or critiqued by the performer. The noise makers brought the labels with them, to help ensure their success. A great Country and Western artist once said of Ray Charles, "He changed Country music to the point where I could sing it". The noise makers wanted to change Jazz to the point where they could play it, or at least be considered JAZZ players. Cheers |
Messengers:
Great group and concept. I just wish Blakey would stick to keeping time. For the life of me, I cannot hear the connection between drum solos and the tunes being played.
Cheers
BTW, I completely agree with the 'alternate take' sentiments. I have a box set by Monk, 4 CDs, and I think they play just a few tunes over and over. Of course Monk seemed to play the same songs on all his albums.
