Thanks for the heads up rok, a lot more interesting than those old Kenton/O’day records I ’m used to !
Happy New Year ! |
Just so rok, just so ! Few realize the role that geography plays in destiny.
One reason foreign cities lag so far behind a great American city like New Orleans is poverty-stricken ,crime-ridden hell-holes like Montreal, Copenhagen,Oslo,Stockholm ,Helenski, Hamburg etc are just too far north for the human brain to develop true mental acuity . |
Big difference between bombastic and virtuosic.
|
Having been there in the 40's and 50's Jazz musicians were assumed to be drug addicts by the general populace of the USA . Easy pickings for cops and DA's looking for an slam-dunk collar and conviction around election time . Many pleaded because attorney knew jury trial was hopeless and would just get them more time . Black guys didn't need attorney to tell them that .
|
I heard some VERY fine cuts from a Canadian diva I never heard of, one Susie Arioli , from her new CD "Spring " on the local Jazz station this AM . Fantastic band as well , trumpet and baritone sax players in particular were outstanding . This station is costing me a lot of money ! |
O-10 I listen to jazz as well , maybe 6 hours a week.
I don't know about musical taste always being a product of the culture you're in ,though that is usually the case .I never heard a note of classical music till I was almost 30, in truth I never even knew there was such a thing. By sheer chance I heard the Great Swedish tenor Jussi Bjoerling sing a Beethoven lied on German radio and was overwhelmed by beauty and that was that . |
Fact certain, you can listen to music composed by living classical composers 24/7 and I believe same goes for Jazz.
I listen to classical 6-7 hours a day every day and for the last 4-5 years about 1/3 of the time I make it a rule to hear composers still breathing . Of course classical has Naxos ,all you have to do is look at their offerings and choose anybody you never heard of , Naxos only sells good music. The founder,Klaus Heymann, deserves every Medal, gold or otherwise there is .
|
It's hard to follow all the nonsense but as far as I can see the root cause of the differences being expressed are in fundamental value systems set in concrete before the brain was fully developed. To whit, frogman attended an institution of higher-learning where intellection was/is highly valued , rok one where it was not . |
rok, your efforts to think "outside the box" are admirable , the sad truth though is you are the box . |
All music is written by humans and all humans are creatures of their time . When you study those who are labled "ahead of their time" you see that what they were/are is fully in their time ,aka the present.
The greatest of the great are shaped by the social conditions of their time, their mother tongue and historical events .The universality of art is that it intensifies human experience but this is always effected by the circumstances around its creation .
I make a point of listening to and trying to understand the music of living composers with varying results ,not for fun I would rather just listen to Bach, Brahms, Schubert and Moz,art and be done with it , I listen to classical music, of MY time because if I do not I may be walking and talking but truth be known I would just be another among the walking dead . |
O-10 Some whores are great at sex, but I prefer a loving women myself . |
Really,0-10? Even known any one born and raised in USA whose soul resonates to Chinese Opera ?
|
Thanks Frogman , the day of resolution by the dominant ninth seems to have passed. RIP |
If bickering will take the joy out of you listening to music it wasn’t about music in the first place.
The most brilliant Professor I ever had, which is saying a lot. was a Frenchwomen who was the most eminent scholar in the Philosophy of Social Science in the world .
She once said, "If you can’t say it in one sentence you don’t know what you are talking about " . |
O-10
The expression in German is "macht nichts " (it doesn’t matter) . To come up with "Mox Nix" you must have been hanging with some very ignorant people .
|
O-10 , hate to keep picking on you(really), but you need to get off that "geist" stuff. There is little more established in Psychology than people like what they are exposed to most . Jazz and Classical combined are less than 5% of the music sold and if God was"geisting" they’d be 90% .
I’m sure the reason I loathe rock is that it came along and killed the Great American Song Book standards on the radio I’d been listening to since, according to my mother, age 3. That I found Classical and Jazz was just plain luck . |
0-10 At 81 my goal is what God intended it to be , to give wise advice to fools in as loving a manner as possible .
God bless you and yours . |
Bad syntax in German too. |
Either frogman’s mom was scared by a bulldog while she was pregnant with him or/and he is a Honors grad of the James Levine School of Dogged Persistence . . |
I like Stan Kenton a lot , he did a lot of glorified Lawrence Wellk stuff to pay the band, but the man was very smart and his best work with the Great Anita O’ Day was a joy. Basie’s "April in Paris" recording is a fave of mine, just straight ahead music, single malt, no chaser. frogman, your command of English is about as good as it gets. I think in religious terms and your patience with us fools is on the Saintly side . Re the article, in Classical its very obvious that the primary difference between French and German music is a function of spoken language . The thought came to me reading the article that the difference between black and white English , esp. back in the day, was enough to be different languages .
The advances in understanding the brain in the last decade may well be the greatest leap in the shortest time in the history of Science . |
frogman, I never try to flatter anyone, I say what I believe, no more, no less. I’ve about worn out my "Cuban Fire" LP , played it hundreds of times, was going to mention that Stan was so far ahead in Latin music it was remarkable , but did not want to sound like I was trying to flatter you. Amazes me that people think "BV Social Club " was the Columbus of Cuban music .
Also loved the way Stan gave due credit to his arrangers .not that common .
|
As I am too old to link I won’t, but one of you smarter people need to link up Brad Mehldau Trio, class personified . Like Basie , Brad doesn’t play more notes than needed. |
IMO whats good about being a serious musician is that it is one of the half-dozen or so jobs in this society that are actually inherently worth doing . |
Be careful guys , the automated A’gon Dispute process wipes out bad feedback of crooks which are ever increasing on here and its no accident. Out a grand in last month from two from two hustlers who listed one thing and sent another useless one , Good Luck to you all, this is my last post on here . |
jafant and alexatpos, since you are both such nice guys I’ll make one last post.
A guy in Podunk, Maine listed a Cary-AES A-25 MK II amp for $800 bucks, I bought it . When I received it it was not that but a decade older and 50% less powerful plain A-25 . I emailed A’gon support with the facts, no reply , then left the hustler with negative feedback, That got immediate reply from A’gon in the form of their automated "Dispute" form . As soon as i wrote the facts and sent it all it did was to remove the crooks negative . In short the people who run this site are a bit bent to say the least .Same thing happened last month with an IC that seller said I should have asked him if it was not RCA but XLR . Just getting on here makes me feel like I’m entering a sleezy whorehouse so I'll "just walk on bye " . God Bless |
God Bless you , acman3 . Amazing how he makes the best better ! |
Moronic post by a fool and seconded by another . |
O-10 - I left the Circus and live in a small city in SE France near Spain. No TV or Internet save when I am back in Twin Cities for funeral etc or Socialist Medicine at VA Hospital. FYI, Red Lobster sucks because the oceans are fished out . |
Your'e in the Circus as a clown not that you realize same . God Bless You all the same ! |
Any thoughts on solo piano straight-ahead renditions of "standards" on CD?.If I had to chose time over melody I would but you need both, at least I do . Box would be nice . |
Thanks acmman , Walton has just the kind of "authority" + melody I had in mind ! |
OK thanks frog, I’ll order the Pablo . To confess a heresy as memory just kicked in , when I was just starting to listen to jazz a bit my favorite player was Sir Roland Hanna . Forgot about him . Hank Jones was beyond doubt a great artist from a family of same , but in my ignorance and tired brain I like more "sparse" players .
|
Great post O-10 ! thanks. Great bass player, I never heard of as well. Going down the You Tubes clips to me the perfect play was Hanna on" I Didn't Know What Time it Was" off his "This Must be Love" album !
Frogman , beyond doubt Monk is what you say he is .. But a casual listener like myself lacks the technical knowledge of a highly trained musician like yourself that enables you to see the beauty that can only escape me . I would guess you understand the way Monk bends notes on adjacent keys in a manner that just frustrates me. I would have liked to hear him play Chopin . |
Above all it takes Love . |
Thanks for the Ray Bryant heads up frog, very much a player I could listen to all day, love how "organic" his runs etc seem, so many guys throw in off the wall stuff, to me often seems like just because they can.
I have a BAD habit of overlooking the obvious because they are popular, like Chick Corea for starters . |
Read up on Marz , real name is Jiri- a Moravian and Graduate of Prague Conservatory. IF there is a more musical people on this planet than Moravians I don’t know about them . My immediate reaction to his playing was he was very well educated in all phases of music and resides in the very upper echelon of players . As well as being a alum of the great Prague school also was given a scholarship to Berklee when he came to USA . If Amazon has 20 of his CD’s I’m buying them all !
|
Also saw a Transcription of "Yesterdays" made by Marz for Stan Getz on You Tube, about as clean a sheet as one could ask for ! Going to school doesn't seem to have affected his talent . |
One more and I'll shut-up . I don't know how to post click on,excuse me . You Tube "Summertime" George Marz and Rolland Hanna "Porgy and Bess(1976)"
Unique version of one of the great standards . Brought tears to my eyes . |
Frogman, what I THINK I see is Mraz looks and listens like a hawk and covers up little slips others make before the note die's off . Of course I could be nuts it seems impossible . |
You are in serious need of mental help ! |
In my quest for Piano simplicityI found a used CD today from a guy who seems forgotten but is a powerful and concise player who gets straight to the point and has something to say when he gets there, Lenny Tristano ! |
If you’re not a fan of Bach you don’t like music ! Another find I made today of Ray on piano was with ’57 Carmen McRay recording , Decca DL8583 . I always thought Sassy was my diva but this recording of Carmen changed my mind . Her young voice was as clear as a mountain spring , perfect diction and intelligence, beautiful beyond belief ! Gone was the whiskey and smoke voice I’d always associated with her , though the mighty soul of the woman still made her always compelling .
Every time I hear Bryant I have one overwhelming feeling , he always plays with love . Can't beat that .
|
More coke goes down on Wall Street than ever went down on Jazz St. Young guys in 20's have bored me with their bitching about 3 million a year + bonus ain't enough to live in NYC .
|
Good point O-10, I always thought 2+2= 4 was a liberal plot . |
Sorry you are sick O-10, that old-ageitis must be going around , I have it as well. Its a hard fight . |
I hear you O-10 , I go to VA myself for problems related to small pieces of lead , agent orange and the trauma thereof. VA is much maligned, mainly because there are powerful forces that don’t want public to see Socialist Medicine works or that a drug bought by VA at 30% of what Medicare Part D pays for same is just as effective . In truth VA outcomes are similar to those of Mayo Clinic and I’ve been to both . Never had a complaint in any of 5 VA hospitals I’ve been in. When my French private insurance was iffy on a procedure, Mpls. VA hospital give me a operation slot within 7 days over the phone .
" A story often told......." is my fav Sir Roland piece as well . |
Clark Terry could play trumpet a bit and is the jazzman I have the most respect for because of his herculean efforts in youth jazz education .
|
In my ongoing quest for solo piano nirvana the easiest on my ear found is Dave McKenna, seems almost simple at first but a lot is going on,esp. in bass line . Hope one of you smarter guys can you tube'em . |
Anyone have any idea how life is for a real jazz musician in secondary cities in USA ? I just heard on Jazz 88 in Mpls. a sax guy one Dave Carr ,who i deem to be local playing, with guitar, "Sweet and Lovely" using those Monk up from the bottom chords , just beautiful. All I could think of is this cat could play anywhere |
Thanks, acman3, nice player , Like that drummer too . |
