Jazz for aficionados

Jazz for aficionados

I'm going to review records in my collection, and you'll be able to decide if they're worthy of your collection. These records are what I consider "must haves" for any jazz aficionado, and would be found in their collections. I wont review any record that's not on CD, nor will I review any record if the CD is markedly inferior. Fortunately, I only found 1 case where the CD was markedly inferior to the record.

Our first album is "Moanin" by Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers. We have Lee Morgan , trumpet; Benney Golson, tenor sax; Bobby Timmons, piano; Jymie merrit, bass; Art Blakey, drums.

The title tune "Moanin" is by Bobby Timmons, it conveys the emotion of the title like no other tune I've ever heard, even better than any words could ever convey. This music pictures a person whose down to his last nickel, and all he can do is "moan".

"Along Came Betty" is a tune by Benny Golson, it reminds me of a Betty I once knew. She was gorgeous with a jazzy personality, and she moved smooth and easy, just like this tune. Somebody find me a time machine! Maybe you knew a Betty.

While the rest of the music is just fine, those are my favorite tunes. Why don't you share your, "must have" jazz albums with us.

Enjoy the music.

Schubert, I told this story, but whatever, we go in circles.

A Sax teacher I knew 25 years ago, said at North Texas they made the classical player and Jazz players take the same bands. He said you could really hear the Jazz players individualism when playing in Concert Band, but the Concert band players, though more perfect sounding, could not improvise like the Jazz players.

Btw, we were working through a Lennie Niehaus book,"Jazz Conception for the Sax". It was a lot of fun for me, but not my dogs and cats. ;)

I don’t believe Pryso was saying it was "trite", but more saying the words dictated a certain mood and rhythm that needed to be observed in the music, at least for him to really enjoy.

I don’t seem to really worry about the context of a songs words, since most jazz is using the cords to improvise and little else. Maybe, I should try to listen a little differently.

In the Bible, Joseph is sold into slavery by his brothers, where he, by God's grace, is raised to a position where he is able to save his family.

I have often wondered if God would again use evil to move Africans out of the African continent to other locations for His good.

In other scripture, God tells Abraham "Four generation later, your decendants will return here and take this land, because only then will the people who live here be so sinful they deserve to be punished .

What do you think this means for the U.S.? Are we reaping what we sow?

Alex, All good clips! I will have to watch the video several more times.

Enjoyed all the clips Mary-jo, Pwj, and Schubert !
A little late on the Larry Young. That's what happens when you deal with people whose brains are firing a little slow. :)
