Jazz for aficionados
I'm going to review records in my collection, and you'll be able to decide if they're worthy of your collection. These records are what I consider "must haves" for any jazz aficionado, and would be found in their collections. I wont review any record that's not on CD, nor will I review any record if the CD is markedly inferior. Fortunately, I only found 1 case where the CD was markedly inferior to the record.
Our first album is "Moanin" by Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers. We have Lee Morgan , trumpet; Benney Golson, tenor sax; Bobby Timmons, piano; Jymie merrit, bass; Art Blakey, drums.
The title tune "Moanin" is by Bobby Timmons, it conveys the emotion of the title like no other tune I've ever heard, even better than any words could ever convey. This music pictures a person whose down to his last nickel, and all he can do is "moan".
"Along Came Betty" is a tune by Benny Golson, it reminds me of a Betty I once knew. She was gorgeous with a jazzy personality, and she moved smooth and easy, just like this tune. Somebody find me a time machine! Maybe you knew a Betty.
While the rest of the music is just fine, those are my favorite tunes. Why don't you share your, "must have" jazz albums with us.
Enjoy the music.

The whole album," Modern Lore" Is awesome. Took a little Bill Frisell turn. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DRkPleU1IBE |
I think the love of Jazz and its expression through our different personalities is really of interest. We have anarchist who want rules in music. We have conservatives who love open jazz because of its freedom, and other conservatives who want music to stay the way it was. All different perspectives on the same music from different angles. Love it! BTW, thanks for the awesome morning music! |
While I agree Miles was shaky at best, the video has 163 likes to 2 dislikes. The bands he put together were always top notch and entertaining. A lot of people love the latter Miles. Probably people who would never listen to his earlier stuff, and yes, I believe he made some money. Even more, it seems to me, he enjoyed the adoration. He might have had a big ego. |
Just 15 years earlier. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YEI8O_wnA6c Dave Holland made me laugh. They were all so young. |
The Turrentine reminds me of the time a year or so ago, I picked up a lot of great records with a man's name on them. I bought as many albums of this one mans collection as I could afford. When checking out I found out a man had passed, and his kids sold his collection. Here's to you Charles from Louisiana ! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bK-OvDgZchU&index=6&list=PLxan76-JAD8sYJ4Hwn1IkA4IA7RWCzbcH |
Do you think Mr. Kirk and Sun Ra are related, or just from Saturn? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TJ2ZfJ1ww9I |
I don't think we have played this. Notice the title. I remember him saying once he used to play like Clifford Brown in High School. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I73T9yLdoH0 |
Pjw, Still listening, but could you check volume 2-5 for a lack of center stage, except strangely when crowd is clapping. Drums, bass, and sax to the right and piano and trumpet out of left. Volume 1 has a nice soundstage. Not a deal killer but you asked for an opinion on sound, and I was wondering if your version had the same issue. Music is good,so far. |
I wonder if music is like language, in that while going up in Texas, and working on farms and ranches as a teen, then working in Dallas for 40 years and losing my twang, for the most part, when I hang out with my East Texas friends, I actually hear my twang come out more pronounced. Do musicians develop a sound like the people they play with? |
