Jazz for aficionados

Jazz for aficionados

I'm going to review records in my collection, and you'll be able to decide if they're worthy of your collection. These records are what I consider "must haves" for any jazz aficionado, and would be found in their collections. I wont review any record that's not on CD, nor will I review any record if the CD is markedly inferior. Fortunately, I only found 1 case where the CD was markedly inferior to the record.

Our first album is "Moanin" by Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers. We have Lee Morgan , trumpet; Benney Golson, tenor sax; Bobby Timmons, piano; Jymie merrit, bass; Art Blakey, drums.

The title tune "Moanin" is by Bobby Timmons, it conveys the emotion of the title like no other tune I've ever heard, even better than any words could ever convey. This music pictures a person whose down to his last nickel, and all he can do is "moan".

"Along Came Betty" is a tune by Benny Golson, it reminds me of a Betty I once knew. She was gorgeous with a jazzy personality, and she moved smooth and easy, just like this tune. Somebody find me a time machine! Maybe you knew a Betty.

While the rest of the music is just fine, those are my favorite tunes. Why don't you share your, "must have" jazz albums with us.

Enjoy the music.

A sad day for anyone who loved Berlin and flew into it’s airport(Tegel) in last 60 years . Very sad for me as I did at least a hundred times (sob) . Just cuting onions.
New one (BER) Willy Brant is 18 kilometers SE from city center, Tegel was 5 north .

If Americans ever get the green light to fly to Germany again in my lifetime I will be there if its the last thing I ever do. On Lufthansa 747 out of Chicago ! In First Class !!
Politics got in to it, time was unusual for Germany .But Germany is an actual democracy so there are more than 2 parties having a voice .
Old but Bold !

Pure Wisdom from one of the greatest American Musicians
at the Crane Music School at SUNY Potsdam N.Y.

Not bad for kids who likely will be school  Music Teachers , one  of the best things you can be !

Got all the Christmas vinyl of this Gentleman's out this Dec. 1st.
Gets a lot of  use from me this month .

Frogman, God as my witness. I went to U of MN, top 50 in the world , then U of WI top 25, 2 German U’s where you lived or died in a 3 hour grilling .If God made me the 1st human for a do-over at 18 and I could go to any U I wanted , I’d pick little SUNY Potsdam in the Adirondack foot-hills.

The Crane School has 650 students as does the U of MN School of music .There’s nothing I like better than to go to student recitals , may be the bias of a old man but at MN I hear (or did) competition, at Potsdam, cohesion .

The Mohawk’s claim one of earths power belts pass right under SUNY Potsdam . I used to argue with Indians, I don’t anymore with Native Americans .
Rok, if Gen. Perma can pull off the logistics of Warp after almost a total year of total neglect it might well be the greatest feat of the US Army
ever
.Gus looks like the man to me, if he pulls it off he will deserve the Medal of Honor . I’m praying for him and all logistical soldiers .
I got struck as Plt Sgt for few months in a Transport Co. hauling ammo . It ain't easy or safe .
They could needle me today Rok .
Took 20 shots in one day at Benning for my tropical vacation with 1st Cav..
Keegiam, how right you are.

Of all the great cities of the world , Berlin is the one-off !

Latest clip from the worlds greatest pianist , direct from the Frost School in this Oct . https://youtu.be/9mLauh_ZyJw?t=1

Only problem I have with Arty Shaw is I can never get a "best" , every piece is perfect .
Got one with Rubalcaba even if piano is a bit off . Must be the company he keeps.Plus its in Munich, they love jazz.

Rok,.Never thought of logistic as hardest workers.Come to think of it my Transport Plt. had to be at dock by 4AM whilst the
105 shells for the 4id were loaded as we ate breakfast at a table on the dock.

Then my 8 deuce and 1/2’s had to go up from seal level to their base at 3, 500 ft on a steep dirt road , 300 miles up and back getting back to our
base around 8 PM . 7 days a week with the odd shot to deal with.
The Transport Lt. with the jeep and ONLY radio didn’t show up most days .
.
Thanks Alex, I appreciate it .
But Sonny and Gene have way more soul  IMO .Kelly is certainly a great pianist but he just leaves me cold .
No doubt , my own fault .
Alex, I have noticed that some piano players use their arm , I gather that’s not how it’s done.
Look at what my favorite live jazz man does . Ten fingers , seven of then doing different things at the same time in tone and tempo. At times looks like ten !

Now , this is a lady who REALLY knows how she wants to play her guitar !https://youtu.be/SKQG-JGyn7U?t=3
Mother Cotten was a North Carolina girl and wrote the Iconic picking standard " Freight Train". .
To go through he life would take all day , IMO she was at the National Treasure level.

She wrote this at 11 and sings this at 90 . I think her voice is beautiful .

You can’t fake soul frogman.

Re, Mingus . If memory serves , his was the first jazz record I ever bought that made me take Jazz seriously. Growing up in the 40’s average American thought it was just people that took drugs .
A lot of drugs . As always, race had something to do it .
Rok, Canada has X billion $ of Pfizer, Moderna, Astra Zeneca and is looking at Johnson & Johnson . No Chinese.

Will get theirs few days after US starting with about 1/8 as much , same as their population compared to us.
Anything can happen, but hard to see them united with US . Canadians
are quite patriotic but not very nationalistic .

Cheers
I always liked " Loveless Love" but only heard Billy Holiday do it .
Little lady on Roc’s held her own . Thanks !

O-10 that violin-piano outing is going cost me money. Who knew !
0-10,
It took a few days with my connections but yes, your outfit was one
of the few actually considered military in the Air Force .

TOITMC, Nat King Cole was 2nd with Nature Boy .
Thank you , jetter.
It pays to listen to those that are just beyond any  genre now and then .
God Bless you and yours .

pjw, I’ve heard Nat sing the Christmas Song 10 times in last few days, If I hear him 10 times more OK with me .

trent, Dorham is so unique I can’t fathom him, but an artist he is.

frogman, never heard Etta sing that, almost cried over how beat she was,but she will always be a mighty force of nature .

Mary Jo, hate to say it, but my beloved Berlin has to bow to Wein as the best city in the world to live in .
Berlin is a one-off , every thing  both good and bad is to be found there .
New York of Europe , with a much better subway (U-Bahn).
Amen . Sevilla is one of the top cities  in Europe , therefore the world .
Berlin was always my first love but ,IF,  I could move back to Europe  in my old age  , Sevilla  or Verona would be my choice .
Rok is right , everyone should read Rand .
Her many love-letters to Hitler are great.
Sad to Say, Adolf thought she was a nut-job .He should have given her his baby she wanted sooo badly.
Well O-10 , Switzerland is having a sale.
Only 5 million $ fee for new accounts over the lowest amount possible which is only 100 Million $$ . !
If this doesn't   warm the  heart  of  any  American  when the mike failed
in another country . there is something  wrong with them.

https://youtu.be/mHSaHRd4Q48
Our National Anthem is a war song and to American Ears she sung it
very well . And I have heard it thousands of times .

I also have heard Mozart and Opera arias thousands of times as well .

Ditto with all major Jazz  Divas too, Carmen  and Sarah are my favorites .
This guy called himself a" blues singer" , not up to me to deny such an artist as him.
I would say there is ZERO doubt among females that he speaks the truth and only the truth as this lady testifies the first time she ever heard him!

https://youtu.be/OzylvkJkSbI

P.S . I knew Peterson was classical trained first time I heard him play and was Canadian first time I heard him speak . Class on top of class !
I imagine this album by Lewis is already on here , but just in case a nice
bunch of jazz with some originality
Drummer is very melodic and lovely to the ear, at least mine .Ditto for the bassist .

https://youtu.be/vpDXuai8UIw
Scott Hamilton still great with on this entire album with a a good German
trio . From what I hear he is a King in Germany, I saw him in Sweden
and he was a God there!

https://youtu.be/AAbAYR9gGOE

Bernhard Pichi , the leader is a top pianist , whole rhythm section sounds very good to me .
Just a beautiful album .
Torme said this about singing "never lose sight of the original music  value which the composer  put in it ".
He was a musician from top to bottom that actually studied music
and his genuine intellect knew it well .

Only a real musician could do that run with Buddy, and a very good one at that .
I argued for decades  about that made him better than Sinatra who never  even though he needed to read music .

One of a kind, at least in US  I can think of none like him .

When he died from stroke in "’96 he had 6 kids and was worth what would be about 50 million today .

Oh , he loved shooting and was one of the best clay bird busters in the country .
To me one of the best jazz full albums .

Paul Bley was an artist going to his  own way , the boy from Montreal was
unique .
I knew him and he was also a nice guy .

When I said someone is brilliant it bothers me not that someone else
thinks otherwise . I said sucks because it it just a word to me,
we all have a right to like what we like .At least in music .

What does bother me is to explain why I like them so much .
IMO Music is one , perhaps THE great gift to man from God and I don’t ,
perhaps can’t, explain, what I just like what I like anymore than I can God.

To me Jussi Bjorling has the most beautiful voice I ever heard.
No doubt Pavarotti would get more votes , and deserve them .

IMO Bach is the most profound composer who ever lived or will, if someone
thinks it Mozart or Beethoven , that is up to them .

In Jazz I like Mingus and Sunny Stitt the best.

Of course all music lovers ,which we all are , love players and composers
by the hundreds , perhaps the thousands, in all the genres we love .
So be it , takes all kinds .

{Except Heavy Metal lovers }

I think that if you start to try to know why you like to know why you like this and that
you become some body else. Not a good idea IMO .

If you pray enough , Jesus will let you know.

Can’t speak for other religions .

I did know that when others said  something about being somewhere in six months the
old soldier in me laughed and said ONE month tops !

You like it  , I don't and what a classical musician might think is irrelevant
to me, I listen to the complete thing  .As the oldest person here I have a complete": I was there" when
Big Band died and music came along that struck severe  blows to American society .

I think God  has something to do with everything .

Re , Cooperate US , Blacks are

 , per capita , less than 1/10 .Sports less than 1/1000 .

In a bubble what ever the bubblist  wants .

I will look for those 8 !

frogman, I have known well about 20 symphonic musicians and thought
of telling haircell I never knew one that ever went to any other
genre other than Jazz , but I get tired .

If it is not God that makes man the way you describe,  I fear for you mahgisters , as the present Pope says ’’, The only people that don’t get to to heaven are those who don’t want to."

Obviously you are a decent guy in the 150+ IQ club and I like to read
your posts .
Knowing the Christian God has infinite love he might have some pleasant home for those who don’t deserve the evil one, short of heaven but not bad .

One reason I believe in God is I look back at 80+ years and I see
there were AT LEAST 20 times in my life I have walked or driven away
from death when that was IMPOSSIBLE !
