Jazz for aficionados

Jazz for aficionados

I'm going to review records in my collection, and you'll be able to decide if they're worthy of your collection. These records are what I consider "must haves" for any jazz aficionado, and would be found in their collections. I wont review any record that's not on CD, nor will I review any record if the CD is markedly inferior. Fortunately, I only found 1 case where the CD was markedly inferior to the record.

Our first album is "Moanin" by Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers. We have Lee Morgan , trumpet; Benney Golson, tenor sax; Bobby Timmons, piano; Jymie merrit, bass; Art Blakey, drums.

The title tune "Moanin" is by Bobby Timmons, it conveys the emotion of the title like no other tune I've ever heard, even better than any words could ever convey. This music pictures a person whose down to his last nickel, and all he can do is "moan".

"Along Came Betty" is a tune by Benny Golson, it reminds me of a Betty I once knew. She was gorgeous with a jazzy personality, and she moved smooth and easy, just like this tune. Somebody find me a time machine! Maybe you knew a Betty.

While the rest of the music is just fine, those are my favorite tunes. Why don't you share your, "must have" jazz albums with us.

Enjoy the music.

I have that box set. I love it, as most things William Parker is in, but with anything requiring so much concentration from the listener, you have to be in the mood. It will not hurt my feelings if others don't like it, but if you put in the work to listen, you will be well rewarded.

Just some people don't want to "work" to listen. Understood!
It's not the note you play that is the wrong note, It's the note you play afterwards that makes it right or wrong.

JD, I am glad you have enjoyed some of the clips.

I may have my Audiophile card revoked, but I normally listen to my computer through the computers speakers at highest rate available on Youtube. Very Lofi! I have been meaning to upgrade, but put more time into main system, and just haven’t gotten around to it. I do stream music off recordings to make sure they are as good as they sound on a computer when available.

I think everybody else on this thread has a better computer system than I do, so maybe they will help you out.

Sorry to be of no help, but if your able to hear and GET the music, I don’t think you are missing a thing.

Is all the weeping a gnashing of teeth about Matthew Shipp? I'm not even sure he is Jazz. Just a brilliant musician! It's chaos because you don't understand it?  What's wrong with musical chaos?

BTW, I was clearly joking about the Body and Soul comment, but I guess  it was taken seriously.

O-10, All the reviews are regarding the recording Zero, the one you hate. Reviews mean nothing, other than I know 9 people, 10 counting Jafant, who get it.

I will try to find something better next time.
The name of the book Nate Chinen is selling in that article is called "Playing Changes- JAZZ for the New Century! The entire article and book is about several current JAZZ player. It even brings in Marsalis.

You just like to argue.

No I don’t !

The Lloyd was played in response to several eastern influenced cuts played over the weekend. O-10 and I both were involved in that travesty of justice. The contributor then played some very nice Jimmy Forest on the same post!
