Jazz for aficionados

Jazz for aficionados

I'm going to review records in my collection, and you'll be able to decide if they're worthy of your collection. These records are what I consider "must haves" for any jazz aficionado, and would be found in their collections. I wont review any record that's not on CD, nor will I review any record if the CD is markedly inferior. Fortunately, I only found 1 case where the CD was markedly inferior to the record.

Our first album is "Moanin" by Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers. We have Lee Morgan , trumpet; Benney Golson, tenor sax; Bobby Timmons, piano; Jymie merrit, bass; Art Blakey, drums.

The title tune "Moanin" is by Bobby Timmons, it conveys the emotion of the title like no other tune I've ever heard, even better than any words could ever convey. This music pictures a person whose down to his last nickel, and all he can do is "moan".

"Along Came Betty" is a tune by Benny Golson, it reminds me of a Betty I once knew. She was gorgeous with a jazzy personality, and she moved smooth and easy, just like this tune. Somebody find me a time machine! Maybe you knew a Betty.

While the rest of the music is just fine, those are my favorite tunes. Why don't you share your, "must have" jazz albums with us.

Enjoy the music.

If  there is anybody more REALLY  creative in all of music I ain't heard it !
Frogman , here Is a new take from a guy I respect largely because he is the
master of between notes .Also highly creative .

"The greatest instrument in the world is the human soul "

Me too.
I think people have lesser moral values when their country/ culture becomes militarist .In fact I know they do .
One thing most Atheists don't think of is the morals of the culture they abide
by were  Catholic or Orthodox  in the first place .
More so in Europe than USA  which has never had one denomination and
now has thousands of different ones . And thousands of  them are simply
the family business .

A true homage to the man himself, Sidney Bechet .

A note from above .I have met Atheists who have very high morals and Christians who talk Jesus and live Satan .
Lots of them .

I have also seen , more than once, children who are voracious readers but grew up in horrible families turn out to be people of the highest morality .My late wife , a great elementary teacher and principal for 40 years, could spot these children a block away and made sure they  got there own Dickens , Walter Scott etc .And did her best to teach this to other teachers .

Alex , what I had in mine was the Ten Commandments , the speech of Jesus called "The Sermon on the Mount"and the Golden Rule .
IMO that is all you need and almost anyone can understand their meaning .
None of these have caused a war , oppressed the poor , or have written laws for the enrichment of the rich.

Sifting is naming those things that are essential, and naming those things which are not .We live in a time that makes this very difficult , there are huge forces that keep us keep us sidetracked and sedated , daydreaming and distracted .
The Spirit pulls us one way , our world a thousand other ways .

If you don't sift , you will drift .
Jimmy showing the world and a fool like me that you should receive every
day God gives with joy till the last one . His last words on this clip are simple yet profound .

If you clowns are going to get away from jazz divas why not get one who could really sing !https://youtu.be/MbnrdCS57d0?t=3

This little lady could rise a Buffalo Soldier from the grave and send him to the bugles charge .

https://youtu.be/S-cbOl96RFM?t=2

Maybe 0-10 , but I think you Airman are more romantic than us boots on the ground grunts . Still think the "crazy"lady had the best voice of the bunch .

rok, I ’m not a fan of the old blowhard but I think I will buy into this statement in a book I’m reading .

"If I had Canadian soldiers , American technology and British officers I could rule the world ! " .

Winston Churchill
I’m not .

Canada has pulled its weight in every war since WW 1 to today. And often more .
Here is the real BS .

And that is the difference between crass and class .And why the day will come when we will find its a hard world with no friends .

frogman, I am clueless about the technical elements of the harmony , but it is interesting in that he is saying something and you can’t listen
to this as "" background ". It is a conversation .And one you don’t want to
walk away from . Even if you don’t know the language .
The killer in the M-base is growth is the goal. We live in a world where "progress "is all-important .
Growth is something that belongs to you and always will . "" Progress" is  a never ending race to nowhere .The former is why artists are more important than businessman .
They wanted to learn French because most were from the American
South and in France they found white folks who were actually decent , civilized and educated , the exact opposite of where they came from .
French was love in their mouth . Still is for that matter .
The same thing is happening in the Great Quebec Universities . Black students go there for a semester exchange
and most never come back .
Oscar Peterson knew what time it is .
0-10 I was talking only about American Black Musicians , Nothing else .Just time to go .
Thanks , frogman, your giving of your vast musical knowledge has no equal .  You are one of a kind .
A credit  to both your lands .

Thanks , Farewell , O-10 Been nice to know you .
Good luck to one and ALL as well .

I hope they will not delete this .
These ARE as true clips as you will ever hear .  And every American should hear them .

pjw, What your enemy does is on him, what you do is on you. Killing innocent women and children is a crime of the highest order with no excuse .
.
I had an uncle who flew the bomber runs in the last 6 months over Germany . In almost every flight 2-3 crews would drop their bomb load
in the ocean knowing there was no military targets left .He said as long as you stayed in your place and fought German planes nobody said anything.

Yellowjackets have decided to play with the Germans on their new CD.

Frogman, there is a brilliant piece in the Miami Herald by Fabiola Santiago on Cuban situation in Miami on 11/7 .I read it near bottom on Yahoo news today .My come and go mini-strokes confine me to few words .

That Phil and Bud CD you led me to is outstanding .Esp. cut # 6, Gemma's Eyes, 14 min  of as sweet music as I've heard .
To Mary Jo, a beautiful jazz work from one of the biggest brains in the genre that I know about, and the pride of Minnesota .

This Korean kid IMO has such swing and harmonic grove he has unlimited
improv future in Jazz with his Evan hears with classical training .Those Rhodes are something .
For a kid to get to the Jazz essence of this without smaltz is a feat IMO.
