Jazz for aficionados

Jazz for aficionados

I'm going to review records in my collection, and you'll be able to decide if they're worthy of your collection. These records are what I consider "must haves" for any jazz aficionado, and would be found in their collections. I wont review any record that's not on CD, nor will I review any record if the CD is markedly inferior. Fortunately, I only found 1 case where the CD was markedly inferior to the record.

Our first album is "Moanin" by Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers. We have Lee Morgan , trumpet; Benney Golson, tenor sax; Bobby Timmons, piano; Jymie merrit, bass; Art Blakey, drums.

The title tune "Moanin" is by Bobby Timmons, it conveys the emotion of the title like no other tune I've ever heard, even better than any words could ever convey. This music pictures a person whose down to his last nickel, and all he can do is "moan".

"Along Came Betty" is a tune by Benny Golson, it reminds me of a Betty I once knew. She was gorgeous with a jazzy personality, and she moved smooth and easy, just like this tune. Somebody find me a time machine! Maybe you knew a Betty.

While the rest of the music is just fine, those are my favorite tunes. Why don't you share your, "must have" jazz albums with us.

Enjoy the music.

My goal was to play the excellent American Diaries with Joe Lovano, Peter Erskine, Eddie Gomez, and Mainieri, but no videos.

Big Steps Ahead fan, especially with Brecker.
This recording is all Tabackin songs. Can only find this track off the recording on youtube, but there is some great blowing on this record.

Welcome supertweek, One small correction. Alfonso Johnson was still on bass during Mysterious Traveler. Jaco took over midway through Black Market. Great music!

Brian Blade is like a modern day Billy Higgins. He makes everything he plays on great.
Pryso, Listen again to the link and listen for pig noises. Very strange indeed! I am going to side with Rok's voice in my head on this one.

It does make one wonder, "How do you come up with something like that?"
Everyone is in that Kind of Blue mode, not John Coltrane. WoW!

Super exited to hear the "new " Coltrane!
A lot of recordings came out much later than recorded due to over saturation. Blue Note released a lot of Albums much later than recorded.

I remember when I would purchase every Wynton Marsalis recording as they came out. From 1989 - 1992 Wynton put out 15 recordings. Bought a few during, but much less after that.
Regarding O-10, I am a little worried  myself, as he would  not be able to stay out of the political discussion disguised as economics of Audio, if he were well.
Thanks Igoler! Will have to check your choices out.

I believe Frogman played this earlier but still awesome !

Igoler, I realized I had that Sonny Clark. The SACD has Duvivier way back in the mix. He is still a little far back in the Tidal recording. Is the bass better on vinyl? Always loved Sonny Clark on that recording though.

I was listening to this today. Since I don't read poetry, at least I now know a little more about Carl Sandburg's poetry. Really nice music.
