Jazz for aficionados

Jazz for aficionados

I'm going to review records in my collection, and you'll be able to decide if they're worthy of your collection. These records are what I consider "must haves" for any jazz aficionado, and would be found in their collections. I wont review any record that's not on CD, nor will I review any record if the CD is markedly inferior. Fortunately, I only found 1 case where the CD was markedly inferior to the record.

Our first album is "Moanin" by Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers. We have Lee Morgan , trumpet; Benney Golson, tenor sax; Bobby Timmons, piano; Jymie merrit, bass; Art Blakey, drums.

The title tune "Moanin" is by Bobby Timmons, it conveys the emotion of the title like no other tune I've ever heard, even better than any words could ever convey. This music pictures a person whose down to his last nickel, and all he can do is "moan".

"Along Came Betty" is a tune by Benny Golson, it reminds me of a Betty I once knew. She was gorgeous with a jazzy personality, and she moved smooth and easy, just like this tune. Somebody find me a time machine! Maybe you knew a Betty.

While the rest of the music is just fine, those are my favorite tunes. Why don't you share your, "must have" jazz albums with us.

Enjoy the music.

Thank you prysol !I put those clips on Poland with the idea if they were something to even one person, I’d be happy .Millions of people recorded as Russian
are actually Polish from when Russia controlled 1/3 of present day Poland .
I’m 3/4 Scottish and I/4 English . If I was 100 % Polish I would be proud to be from the most Christian people in Europe .

Told you that you sound just like them !

Glad I wasn't there for the R&R  , I would have been arrested for guitar  destruction .
Mary Jo a ?

Are the dislike of Serbs still high in your native land ?
Took NATO a long time to do much !

Love that De Lucia , put some real juice into Spanish music .

they
Thanks mary jo . Very glad it’s not as bad as one hears.

Just as many fascists here , half the people like Putin and hate blacks .
To whom it may concern :

Does the FM  "Performance Today"  play  in your area .?

The biggest mistake most humans make is to think  we are always
making progress .
Some people see through rose-color glasses , some do not . They say that it takes all kinds , not being God I can’t say .

What is certain is the human race is destroying the planet we live on at a faster rate than anyone expected . There is no wider stage .
The fact that a 16 year old autistic girl is blowing the loudest horn could be seen as Biblical intervention . Not being God I don’t know .

I do believe he has a very wide field of view.

The digital age has brought the evil of alienation with it . Good read on it is
"Bowling Alone" .
Anyone who has heard the "Star Wars" music had heard this composers
music .
He also wrote an excellent Christmas Carol which is sung by a fine
Cleveland Church Choir practicing community .

About 1:03 in back row a Asian male chorister has a lovely choir solo .
Would be a crime , no a felony , to not play what is one of the greatest African -American  musical  gifts played this time of year and only the way  the Queen could sing it .

I have great respect for Puerto Ricons , In "68 I was fighting with draftees which is not a really good idea. No matter what you see in the movies .
The best I had were them and they just tried harder to do their best.

In college I researched what % of people were drafted from every state . I believe it was New York, but am sure I saw a footnote that Puerto Rico sent more than Any State per capita .

Viva la Borinquen !
The state of NY give me and 3 other kids around the state a free train ride to Albany after state wide 7th grade grade tests ,with a teacher as escort .
When we got there we had to do a dog and pony show for a bunch of educators to include singing , I was not happy .
Only a fool of the highest order would state that the British won WW II .As she rambles though other non-existent  facts she leaves no doubt she is that .
rok, I was saying what Murray does to Germans in early 60’s as an E-6
with a GED in my locker .
Been about 500 items in the "Economist " since then saying all he has save one truth .
He does have the guts to say the game is over .

Easier to do when your bank accounts are healthy for sure .The Twin Cities , per capita . have the most Forbes 500 executives of
any American City .Hence , a lot of uber rich bi-wigs on the Minnesota Orchestra Board .
They shut the Orchestra down for 2 years because they felt 90K per year is too much to pay a musician .

.
I agree with frogman on Herbie Hancock .
He is the ONLY player I will listen to on anything in any genre .
He is music itself or as close as is humanly possible .

Great long clip of Duke Jordan with other greats . Just great straight ahead jazz !
Got my copy coming from Amazon , along with the Thad Jones "Detroit
New York  Junction ", which was new to me .
AND, by chance  a new LP I have wanted for a long time , Horace Silvers "Cape Verdean Blues "

Thank you Jesus !
Music is different from any other art  because they are a reflection of something else and Music is the thing itself .
Every human being is born with the greatest instrument of all, the human
voice .
I believe our creator created music because without it this in vale of tears
we could not carry our load . I know I could not .

I’m no expert on Freddy but of what I do have I like this the best .

The Julia Fisher of the trumpet .
Julia Fisher rarely uses a score , I have seen her live three times and she did not on those occasions . I see none on the You Tube clips either .
Ditto for most "jet-set" violinists .
What I hear from Hubbard is the way he almost seamlessly drifts into a rhythm, you have to concentrate to hear the micro- second it takes. Fisher does it seamlessly, a function than can be done on the violin, and which she does better than anyone else .
What makes her as great as she is she serves the music she plays every single second .
A jazz player, to a significant degree, shows you what they think.A classical player’s job is to show you what the composer thought .
Not  that classical players don't slip a tiny riff in  now and then .

What made Hubbard great is he had something to say that moved  the jazz trumpet along .
IMO , more than anyone else on the scene .

P.S . rok, Buy yourself a notebook .

I don’t remember , I was working night and day . I had three MOS’s, one of which was Tactical Commo Chief . Which was why I was there to teach .
Extra 60$ a month . Stand up, talk up, for 2 weeks go to Dix and Air Force it to Rhein Main .Best class I ever had, by far, was my Top’s master class on maneuver of clerks working up drafts .
I'm still on Cloud 9 from chance scoring of a mint LP of "Cape Verdean Blues" on Friday whilst looking for Thad 's "Detroit New York Junction on Amazon  !

rok, While at a how to call in Arty for Infantry week at Fort Still I was talking to the Major in charge , about what I forget , in any event he said " The only good thing in Texas is the road to OK and points north " .
Guess that includes the "sip" .
rok, the fact that you could never imagine it  does not mean that Fisher can’t .
What bothered me in WW II ( movie "Red Ball Express" ) and even more in Vietnam , because you were always behind enemy lines , was most truck drivers were black.

Aside from Infantry and Huey crew member , being a truck driver was the best way to get killed .My first job on the day I landed for 2nd tour was a month of being a Platoon Sgt in a Truck Company as they had no Transport Senior NCO on hand.Up at 4 AM go to docks and eat there while the entire artillery ammo for
the 4th Infantry was being loaded into our trucks , truck 150 miles straight up dirt mountain roads , unload , and 150 miles back to docks at 7 PM.Seven days a week .

As I always did I was in 1st truck, my driver had been in the Army longer than I had , a good soldier doing a vital job and he was a lousy Specialist 5 which is next to nothing in Army . I told the CO he should be a Staff Sgt.and what I/he got was a blank stare .
In another Company 3 drivers were killed in a ambush 2 days before I went back to my Infantry job in 4th ID.I was never more scared than doing 300 miles a day exactly like ducks in a shooting gallery at the fair .

If I was was running the Army every driver would have got a Silver Star and the ranks they had been denied .
From the little I know this is the best 12 bar base album around .

Happy New Year All    !

.
https://youtu.be/ONQHoQAFwe8?list=RDONQHoQAFwe8            I take it back .
It is? I never meet a American who is into Chinese Opera .
Language always matters . If there no wrong there is no right .

A thought , I drove all over Europe  and the vast majority of music on the car radio was  American R&R .That said , when you crossed into Italy there was little to no of same .
Italy was the most religious country in Europe , there was plenty of pop music but it was Italian pop music .Dare say along with Poland still is . Poles say you are either Polish Catholic or Catholic Polish .
Both countries , have absolute right and wrong and whether they heed it or not they know what it is .
In USA and most  of Europe everything is relative  , relative to nothing .

0-10 , in any deal we are my brothers keepers .And write Republic times 50 times on the blackboard .

Lonnie has something to say about things that should be.

OK , doesn’t really matter to me anyway .
IF you saw the Rack.Vespers I put on what did you think of the voice of that black haired beauty soloist ? Knocked me out .
IMO stuff like than really proves the human voice is the ultimate instrument .

Vespers op 37 is a small masterpiece but a masterpiece it is .I think they got as deep in Rackmaninov’s soul as anything he ever wrote .
Alberta Hunter is a national treasure !

The City of Minneapolis is as well, There is no city in the world that has as many Great Choirs .
Here is one of them ,(still few days of Christmas ).

Phillip Brunelle is widely considered as the best choral director in the world .
The King’s group leaders from both Oxford and Cambridge have told me they are in awe of him .
Like most true geniuses he is a tad world of his own type .I believe he only will record with the MSP PBS , only place I have ever seen him . Could be a financial thing . The Plymouth is a church in Plymouth MN , west burb of Mpls . Was the Church choir originally but now Singers come from hundreds
just to sing with him , no cash involved . But most are just in MSP metro.

In this day and time the little apple is ground zero for the Lutheran Church , not just in the USA but in the world . The Swedes and Norwegians
who where first white settlers her brought their Religion with them and kept it . Anglican Church , my church, also has good choirs as do the Catholics .
And as St,. Áugustine said , and his monk Luther echoed , a prayer sung once is a prayer said twice ..

Couple years ago I stood with the King’s Oxford leader thanking him for a great performance and a boy treble , perhaps 9 years old inched up to me
and said , "We like it here better than Toronto because you really believe ".Out of the mouths of babes ! Been to Church of all types over the US , east, west , north and south ,
and people in the upper -mid-west are not what others are , Christian for
an hour on Sunday .
General observation of course , all black church ladies excluded .
P.S . google’" Classical Minnesota " might take you to MSP PBS which has thousands of their film concerts open to  steaming by public . If not , let me know and I’ll call them up .My sustainer # is 651-229-1300, they should know and
they talk "Minnesota Nice" .

rok, this is my favorite Chanticleer . Best of this classic I have ever heard .Vaughn Williams was / is the Master  !
I grieve though it for my beloved grand mother who lived out her life in a place she did not want to be because her father took the low road in 1915 .
https://youtu.be/9PTZG2cHM5g?t=2
Frog , you have to be one hell of player to be that lyrical on a guitar !

My only interest in the Beatles is I kept hearing from people who should know that others wrote their music . Don’t lose any sleep over it .
I did like "Norwegian Wood " .
I don’t knock their music but when I was working all hours I sure wasn’t going take the hour or two I had to listen to them over Bach , Brahms or Schubert .

rok , I bought that Hunter album on advice from guy at record store . Went back next day on my advice and bought two more . Still got ém ! Down low with a touch of class ......At a 99 she could drop bye my house .
acman3, that Linda May clip is a killer .
I can't keep up with you  , but when I  can I often get something out of the box which is a good thing , a very good thing .
Thanks .

I can’t believe that Amazon just delivered me a brand new LP of
Silver’s "The Cape Verdean Blues "for the grand price of 11 bucks !

But they did and it sounds Blue Note great .
