Jazz for aficionados
I'm going to review records in my collection, and you'll be able to decide if they're worthy of your collection. These records are what I consider "must haves" for any jazz aficionado, and would be found in their collections. I wont review any record that's not on CD, nor will I review any record if the CD is markedly inferior. Fortunately, I only found 1 case where the CD was markedly inferior to the record.
Our first album is "Moanin" by Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers. We have Lee Morgan , trumpet; Benney Golson, tenor sax; Bobby Timmons, piano; Jymie merrit, bass; Art Blakey, drums.
The title tune "Moanin" is by Bobby Timmons, it conveys the emotion of the title like no other tune I've ever heard, even better than any words could ever convey. This music pictures a person whose down to his last nickel, and all he can do is "moan".
"Along Came Betty" is a tune by Benny Golson, it reminds me of a Betty I once knew. She was gorgeous with a jazzy personality, and she moved smooth and easy, just like this tune. Somebody find me a time machine! Maybe you knew a Betty.
While the rest of the music is just fine, those are my favorite tunes. Why don't you share your, "must have" jazz albums with us.
Enjoy the music.

A whole lot of good music on that record, so can't help with the exact song you wanted, so you get it all. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=atDGNDZ9_kI |
Alex, I removed my own post as I decided it did not belong in this Jazz forum. I can go on hundreds of sites if I want to argue about politics. Seems people are more interested in arguing about symptoms instead of the causes. I come here to get away from that mess. Life is full of drama without creating more. I may run for President on that position, but I have made some mistakes and therefore I am not eligible. :) An earlier soprano. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t7MT3OvivVM |

A lot of good music today. Thanks to everyone! Had a chance tonight to listen to the new Bobo Stenson record . I still miss Paul Motion, but these guys are tight and good. Introspective, for those who don’t know Bobo Stenson’s work. https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLXd8AWoLfO0RTE6C_kDSAh0jr7ijx_TTg |
Pryso, thanks for the Carla Bley! One of the great composers. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pbWb9cVXbuY |
When I hear Ernie Watts I remember Frogman's comment regarding him. Frogman said "Ernie Watt's was Michael Brecker with a cold"; makes me laugh every time. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2ENsBvGBtRY |
Forgot the reason I went all Bossa Nova. Picked this up today. Pretty cool. https://video.search.yahoo.com/yhs/search?fr2=piv-web&p=barney+kessel+bossa+nova+album&hspar... |
Both according to the "experts" at Wiki. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mose_Allison Thanks for the Mose! |
Thanks Jafant for letting us know about Cecil Taylors death. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cP5L8tjnB6w Btw, is it Jazz or Blues? :))) |
I finally found a clip of this excellent recording by Ran Blake, from a few years back, celebrating George Russell. https://soundcloud.com/jeremysarna/ran-blake-jacks-blues |
Nice read for those wanting to learn about Cecil Taylor. Hard to figure, on the surface how someone who’s hero’s were Ellington and Monk. Not so hard if you listen. Just the next logical step, although Monk himself was not a fan. https://www.theatlantic.com/entertainment/archive/2018/04/cecil-taylor-obituary/557507/ |
