Jazz for aficionados

Jazz for aficionados

I'm going to review records in my collection, and you'll be able to decide if they're worthy of your collection. These records are what I consider "must haves" for any jazz aficionado, and would be found in their collections. I wont review any record that's not on CD, nor will I review any record if the CD is markedly inferior. Fortunately, I only found 1 case where the CD was markedly inferior to the record.

Our first album is "Moanin" by Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers. We have Lee Morgan , trumpet; Benney Golson, tenor sax; Bobby Timmons, piano; Jymie merrit, bass; Art Blakey, drums.

The title tune "Moanin" is by Bobby Timmons, it conveys the emotion of the title like no other tune I've ever heard, even better than any words could ever convey. This music pictures a person whose down to his last nickel, and all he can do is "moan".

"Along Came Betty" is a tune by Benny Golson, it reminds me of a Betty I once knew. She was gorgeous with a jazzy personality, and she moved smooth and easy, just like this tune. Somebody find me a time machine! Maybe you knew a Betty.

While the rest of the music is just fine, those are my favorite tunes. Why don't you share your, "must have" jazz albums with us.

Enjoy the music.

Nope , I live alone in a small condo and have the energy of a dead fly . There is 14 inches of snow in Denver , its headed here and looks likeTwin-Cities will have about 10 inches by Friday . So invitations seem un-cool .

I can thank God from my bed .God Bless you, O-10, and ALL those on here .
What ever it was rok, that rendition of that great standard was superb as were the next two.
I have to put in another player at Randy’s level as tribute before I take my
afternoon senior collapse . This guy is only a year or two younger than me and I can do squat , Life is not fair!

Thanks ,0-10 . I don't mind to be dead, its that dying part I don't like .
Re-great men , I don't think any of the men you and and rok mentioned were great .They were just men that did bad things and good things .
The  thing I really respect in any "leader" is following one of the ABC 's
of Christian theology .Never do a bad thing because YOU  think it will lead to a good thing .Still waiting for one I can look up to .

The ideas of Jesus are simple  ,  men make things complicated because , though they are simple , they take all you have to follow them . i.e. "Love Your Enemy".
I feel really guilty not showing you guys the best USA has . Thanksgiving
seems like the right time . Even if this only a small fraction of  "wazz up" .

pjw,    Maybe he wanted a better place .

Not to worry , at least for your kids.
Climate change will insure there will be a lot of free housing and better health as obesity will a thing of the past .Only hitch might be lack of potable water , but you can’t expect  the government  to do everything for you !
rok,Ayn Rand is in Row 6788 next to the man she wrote love letters to in
6789, Adolf Hitler . (TRUE) Building is VIP # 1 , top floor
in Hell , about hundred yards down from Satan’s Penthouse .

Both beds are set to the VIP only temp 6, 000 F and torture is only 60 times
a minute .
Proof positive it pays to do a good job for your boss !

Also that Satan is merciful , Hitler never  replied to her many letters , he thought she was a nut job .
Even a broken clock is right once a day .

I did read a lot of history , the type of government that will torture you is any
one who feels like it .
rok , check this out .
Was in Army hospital in Japan for a month and was 50/50 if I ever would walk out . Guy next to me was a Navy Gunners Mate E-6 , don’t ask me why he was in Army Hospital, who was close to deaths door .
Head Nurse of the joint was rough old Lt. Col. who was strictly business .She fell in love with the Sailor and married him as soon as he was released ! I was told the powers that be said she could not do that and she said" watch me " .

Day before I was released the Head of the biggest American Protestant Association came through talking to the wounded , I looked at him and somehow thought I knew the face . When he got to me he shook my hand and it just came out my mouth, "Are you from Syracuse " . He looked at me and asked my surname . Then said" I married your parents and baptized you ’"

The kicker was the Col. running the hospital and showing him around who I had never seen , nor he me , blurted out that I was one of his best patients.
Typical Army .

Don't eat to much today or you'll be late for Reveille  tomorrow .

Cheers
This is Salsa I guess but it seems to have elements of jazz in it .Yes? No?
In any event I like it .

My Puerto Rico friends keep telling me Spanish is the language of love, seems they were correct .
rok , you don’t have imagine a country where population is middle class and every single citizen has enough .Just buy a ticket to Denmark , happiest country in the world . And it is very Capitalist .

There has never been a Socialist country , a Dictator calling it one don’t make it one .

The greatest socialist act in human history is the 20 trillion $ US Capitalism transfer from private loss to public debt of same in last decade .
P.S . In a Presidential election Electoral College insures that a 100 votes in TX are less than 1 in Ohio . Only Republic in History with one . Or dumb enough to .

Back to tunes please , last thing of this nature I’ll post , Game is over , we lost , end of story .
This post is an all-time classic . Period .

I can only get one to a box because of the way my ’puter is encoded .

If you like trad Christmas Music this is THE greatest rendition of one of
the greatest songs . That is not in English is irrelevant .
For us rok , there is a small clip where Soldiers are marching to midnight Christmas Services .
I know a hard-core Atheist that loves Christmas music .

I personally consider it the Greatest piece of Music  I have ever heard .

rok.,
Re-Jussi Bjorling, for a great Opera singer he had little training and could sing any type of song. I think I would have because he has such heart and humanity in his voice .

Impossible to be sure because you can’t do an experiment .

I saw a long interview of Pavarotti on BBC .Most of it was about what he thought about this tenor and that and how they were compared to him.
He was quite serious but his natural affability was still there . Toward the end the presenter asked him about Bjorling . He got real serious and said ,

" Don’t compare me to Bjorling, I ’m only human" .

He meant it .
I’m not a snob , but my opinion , and that of others , is the more refined your taste is , the more you appreciate Bjorling ..50 years of listening to Bach daily would refine a trash cans taste .

I  had a parlor trick  I used sometimes when someone come over to listen .I would put on Pavarotti singing his wheel house  aria , " Nessun Dorma "  from Puccini's "Turandot ".which
floors people who hate music .Then I would put it on with Bjorling as I said ," that was how you sing it  loud , this is how you sing it good "3 out of 4 got it  .

Even a kid like frogman heard that .
0-10 , if you want to reload all the Gatlin’s on you spooky AC-130 in your war go to You Tube and search for Nick Hanauer .
He has enough ammo for a squadron .
rok, there ain’t no bad things being in the military in Germany , just lest good.

Knew a USAF E-6 that had "homesteaded " in Berlin for 12 years .My Top was on his 4th tour in Germany which is 12 years .
My Platoon Sgt ., a black man and fine soldier, got discharged in Berlin when his 20 was done . He told me he never wanted to go through racismin USA any more and died 40 years later in Berlin .

Kicker was many of the British troops in Berlin were 2 year" National Service " aka drafted, who had never been out side the UK , and many of them stayed there forever .
French didn’t seem all that thrilled , but I know a few had German wives .

rok, P.S . If your German is good you can usually get the jist in Swedish . Often whole sentences are in German .       I knew what " O Helga Natt" was immediately , Imagine you did as well .
They claim Swedish is the easiest  language  to learn for a native English speaker.       I believe its the one when you have a girlfriend  who speaks little or no English .
acman3.

Man . I had forgotten Lalo Schifrin even existed ! Heavy stuff , thanks .
Reminds me of a Camry I rented recently that had a 10 speed tranny .
Ahh, I live about 4 miles from my Alma Mater and I believe its the stuffing getting knocked out of the Gophers . But I got my Masters from Wisconsin
so I can handle it .It turned to 8 inches of something on my balcony .

Maybe I’ll move to Texas , they have two world -class universities there as well .
In the couple of thousand live concerts I’ve been to , I’ve seen players get energy from an audience for but only "jet set " players and conductors really kicked the band into overdrive .
About two years ago leaving the concert hall I ran into a young oboe player
in the St. Paul Chamber Orch, whose father I knew and her to the extent
I had to say hello  .The concert was staring one of the worlds greatest violinists and stupid
me, still high from concert , blurted out " He made you guys play better than
you can" . She just smiled and said " it seemed that way " .
Course jazz players maybe act different , but I doubt it . In any event , as O-10 says , its rare .

Opera digs deeper into human emotion , your emotion , because it adds to great instrumental players the very greatest of the greatest instrument , the human voice .

The Greatest Opera of all "Madam Butterfly " is that because it bares the entire range of emotion of the most important thing in Humanity. A Mother !

https://youtu.be/cXfGPOHgImk?t=3 Only one sung by a real Asian . About 2: 45 she breaks into the GREAT part of aria where she sings in agony and love as she looses her son .
Many men and most women cry , even if they have heard it a hundred times .
pryso, Another example , not that any was needed , of your superb taste !
The truth in true beauty does that to human beings .
I don’t know much (no Joke) but Mingus strikes me as the most creative
jazz man ..

If this was written yesterday it would be stone-cold current .
0-10 , two reasons .
1.No one else was ever President when they was a real chance the
workers would become Communist .
2. No one else in American history was ever married to a women of the caliber of Elanor Roosevelt , one of THE greatest persons ever born
on American soil !      She thought , He talked .
rok2 ids ,

My take on Bell is he a fantastic player who is about himself more the  the music .
Sort of like a musical Ayn Rand but not profoundly evil and insane like her .
Bad analogy really, as I’m sure Bell did not take meth every day for 20 years+ or thinks Hitler was the greatest man who ever lived .
I am aware of history .

O-10 , no doubt you know the current favorite substitute for the N- word is thug .
At certain political rallies the heard cheers 3 times as loud for that as any other word or phrase .

"Pride is a sense of worth derived from something not a part of us " Confucius .

Another match made in heaven .

Shirley comes in about 1:50 , till her last breath she remained a great artist .
If God ever made two people to make music better together than Toots and Shirley Horn , I ain’t heard them.

https://youtu.be/_sjMT50B23w?list=TLPQMDQxMjIwMTkLjA1xZ-V9WQ&t=2

I have this in on Toots Thielemans  "Yesterday and Today "  in the Out of the Blue , Netherlands  Label, Vinyl version .New in 180 .  Covers groves with the greats from  1946 to 2001 .  2 LP listen a wonderful relaxation after a hard day.CD has more cuts and is perhaps almost as good . Best 40$ I've spent in a long time .
Yup, I have always thought that frogman is a born teacher extraordinaire.
Of course , its what he thinks is all that matters .

rok, If all I listened to was small groups and vocals I would not spend as much as I have . But after going to live symphonic concerts at least a thousand times over the years, if I can’t hear the depth that allows you the instrumental separation that I’m used  to hearing ,its hard for me to listen. Little less with big band .

You lose much of any music when you eyes can’t see it as well .So all available hands on deck for me . Its more that I have a tin ear than a " golden one " .

I have a 6006 and a Croft Micro pre with all hard wiring and tube rectifer, 7 tubes with 2 for
built in phono . With a Rein (German ) DAC for 6006 .All in all about 5K .
The difference between the Croft Alone on records
and running though the 6006 same piece on CD is about two orders of magnitude

And both are running through Holy Grail 5751 Valvo’s from the Amperex factory in Hamburg .
Tubes are better for this reason , they come back far faster from overload than a solid state , which your hear as a coherent sweet natural sound with far less listening fatigue . And there is always micro overload .
I have a more tech paper some where but I don’t have the energy to go find it .
Or correct my spelling .
I think we all know that what we look at in our "puter is what we soon get"deals" from . I have a "eye in the sky" live to Frankfort Airport which I look at often and did so today . No snow on ground , temps for next 10 days , high 40’s to 50 . Here in St. Paul foot of snow and single number temps .

Five minutes later I get a deal from Air Canada which has several flights a day from here to Toronto . Really was a deal , 595$ from MPS to FRA econ , both ways, 1, 999 $for Business round trip . What’s a boy to do?

rok , to hear the late Mozart symphony’s with depth is a treat and a half , London’s from Haydn even more so . I stopped buying that 5th , every time I played it to someone I had to give it away . Monster recording !

P.S . The price of my system is I drive a Nissan instead of the Audi I want . I can live with it . A car can only get you from A to B , the right system to a taste of eternity .
81583FACT 1920 Polish Army alone in 1920 turned back the Invincible Red Army with women, old men and boy scouts left to fight in the Warsaw borders , which they did and many died doing it .
As the Great tactical Polish Generals routed from both flanks the Red Army which would otherwise would have taken all of Europe .
Fact in 1628 The Christian Polish Army did the impossible , with 100,000 men they turned back the 300. 000 Ottoman Turks at the gates of Vienna with tactics still studied in military schools world wide .
Had they not , you might be speaking Arabic .

Fact 6 out of your 7 facts are not facts .
Fact This crap should not be on here , Bye .

rok , as I check out I leave you with this , the Polish Army code ."We are too small to defend ". "So Attack !’
If you have never been to Warsaw go .

God Bless You, All, and Poland . And damn Ayn Rand .
Cheers
That Freedom Jazz Dance is about as straight ahead as  there is ! Stone-cold beautiful .
Frogman , I agreed with all you said on Bell . I am old , was tried, didn’t feel like answering and just went for one word to be sardonic.
rok, The mercy and love of God is free and also comes from some who worship him . That is SOMETHING !FYI , as of this minute German Universities enroll 35% of all their young which is the largest figure in German History .
Hope Europe does tax them , we give them billion dollar rebates on zero paid in here .That’s socialist .
Just because we have Socialism for the rich and Capitalism for the rest of us  its still Socialism .

Well , it's about Christmas and we should be listening  to some music of
that genre .This is my favorite both for its message and  its musical value .This is by a great Canadian artist who is world class in this genre and is
a very unique and stunningly beautiful rendition of this wonderful song .

One more of a Carol that applies to most of us .One of her last outings as he fiance died , back again at 62,.
https://youtu.be/CCYSITWpKIk?list=RDElO6auK1GYw&t=4
As folk music goes her genre is the most popular in the world and around
the world . There is a lot more "music " in it than most think . Her music is  world  music , but the Celtic is always there

This is the most powerful and unique version   of this major Carol I have ever heard .
This carol is by far the most played in it’s home , Ireland .
This performance by an Irish" bring the young ones unto me " choir is sung superbly ! Treble Solo is one of the  young lads .
