Jazz for aficionados

Jazz for aficionados

I'm going to review records in my collection, and you'll be able to decide if they're worthy of your collection. These records are what I consider "must haves" for any jazz aficionado, and would be found in their collections. I wont review any record that's not on CD, nor will I review any record if the CD is markedly inferior. Fortunately, I only found 1 case where the CD was markedly inferior to the record.

Our first album is "Moanin" by Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers. We have Lee Morgan , trumpet; Benney Golson, tenor sax; Bobby Timmons, piano; Jymie merrit, bass; Art Blakey, drums.

The title tune "Moanin" is by Bobby Timmons, it conveys the emotion of the title like no other tune I've ever heard, even better than any words could ever convey. This music pictures a person whose down to his last nickel, and all he can do is "moan".

"Along Came Betty" is a tune by Benny Golson, it reminds me of a Betty I once knew. She was gorgeous with a jazzy personality, and she moved smooth and easy, just like this tune. Somebody find me a time machine! Maybe you knew a Betty.

While the rest of the music is just fine, those are my favorite tunes. Why don't you share your, "must have" jazz albums with us.

Enjoy the music.

Re. The Kid at the piano comparison was full of himself and wanted what
he wanted on technical grounds , so would I if I had to play it.But I don’t , I listen to the piano from a distance and only care about the music.

IMO , here is a better comparison from a humble and mature player
who is fair . To my hears if the Bosendorfer is not more musical I will fly to Budapest , swim up stream to Vienna and eat the piano. No salt .
But I could be wrong , I was once , but she left.         This is no doubt my broken brain, but every time I hear a Bosendorfer , I think it is voiced to the human voice , not a machine but a living thing ! Some Great jazz players use them.

This player may well be the deepest thinker  Jazz Artist alive .Damn sure he is one of them .

I rest my case.                       https://youtu.be/bXwWRFl6LSk?t=2
I always use a Drake with my Selmer Mark V1.
Expecting a call from WDR any day now .
Have to use my Canadian passport this trip , no American civilians   allowed till 2021, maybe later

More than anyone else , in any genre., this is the guy I go to when I just want to relax and think all’s well in my world.
Done at the Frost Music School at the University of Miami, which has turned out many fine musicians .

Alex , that "Hawk in Germany" is an old-school jewel ! Hope I can find the vinyl .
acman , ditto for the Tatum " These Foolish  Things " . One of a kind .
Austrians are Germanic, but they are not as blunt and are more laid back then Germans . Stefan Mendel is quite high up on the European chamber music ladder. I can’t read his mind, but his comment about the Steinway
treble harmonics was the way an Austrian might give a back handed compliment . Before it happened I knew an Austrian would leave it up to you.

That CFX gimmick didn’t even sound like a Yamaha to my hears .        Guten Flug !
Just finishing my own copy of this Stanley Turrentine  Album at home.
One of the most  easy to listen with still something to say I've heard
in quite awhile .

In USA a form of jazz , mostly big band swing but straight up jazz as well ,was THE music of the nation from the 20’s to the mid 50’s .

Then rock started and within 18 months jazz was off the radio airways which was how 90% of the people listened to music .

As I was there at the time and only had a small AM radio , I grew to hate rock .Still do .
Kind of like you would feel about somebody who killed your mother in a car  accident .

Two things my Scottish grandmother told me about when I was about 10 I have never forgotten .

"You are always getting better or you are getting worse, there is no in between "

"You will never meet a person that doesn’t know how to do something better than you".

For those who might pray , please do so for the people of Japan .
Typhoon Hajibis is the worst storm to hit Japan in 60 years and paralyzed
Tokyo .There are dead and massive damage .
mary jo, I have two . What clan you can legit wear  comes through your
maternal side and I have two Scottish grandmothers .
One of the best Japanese jazz trios, bassist is the leader and a great player.https://youtu.be/Mmi2UdIlcTU?t=3

Also a fantastic drum solo at about 5: 00

I’ve seen bagpipes in jazz and classical bands , they can do a lot

That said , their correct name is war pipes . They can bring men to fight and
fight hard .This clip is "The Last Post " , the British equivalent of our "Taps" for the fallen Each and every day since 1928 a piper has stood in this cemetery ans played this at 11: 00,, the hour when WW I ceased. .(save the years when Germany held Belgium in WW II )
It ’s important to me because my great-grandfather , a piper in the Black Watch Regiment is buried there .

NO expert , but my stab in the dark is some Scot guards .Most look to be civilians .My heart felt thanks .
Well it was his step-daughter but still on the pervy side all right.
All I know about his playing is I would not bother to go hear it if it was free
and they sent a limo .

This is what a great clarinet player sounds like !

I did not know that . I was buying a good Saxophone, for a niece I love dearly , who was going to music school at Indiana .(on my advice)

I called a friend who was a brass man in Navy Band and an excellent
HS  music teacher .
He told me what to buy but not how much it would cost .
No never mind , I would take out a $100, 000 loan for her .
I thought it was sarcasm all right frog .And I do not for minute think you are anything but correct about De Franco. ..
That said, Martin Frost was an "associate " with the SPCO for two years .As a musician he blew everyone away . Can play half a dozen instruments, is a fantastic conductor, and has one of the most agile and inventive minds this side of Oslo.
Could he do what De Franco does if he wanted to? I have no idea , but I wouldn’t bet against him .
.

P.S . Do you heart a favor , as you age it doesn’t get along with coffee . Been there .
USA doesn't have the tax base either, we just put it on what will defeat us , our national debt .

rok , was a real blast watching Russians take selfies in the deserted Anerican base in Syria  just now on BBC news ..
Looked to be totally intact  so they will be comfy .
rok,One I saw talked "accident" , Figured I would not see it again .
On your clip the Black Watch Bn , looked pretty decent for a unit
just back from A’gan . Drummer should have got medal .I learned a lot from Brits in Berlin .
One was US single move is inferior to 22 years in same regimentTwo , is Major with about 12 years in often commands same company another10 years . No up and out , stress is less and the Pride of the Regiment
assures no slackers . And they are seen as every bit as much an Officer and Gentleman as any one in the British Army .

A friend of mind , an eminent Prof . of Chemistry  , says" Science merely
studies  the handy craft of the creator ."
frogman , ain’t no weak links in that group !  Who is the other bad wind player?

I love it when the "boys in the band" play as well as the "star" , sometimes
better .
A bunch of music makers sliding into a sort of modern swing . The drummer , Nils Conrad , stands out IMO .
https://youtu.be/UPJMvNlq3S4?t=4

A great trad group with a bad to the bone bary solo.( among others)

https://youtu.be/nK7ViMol7Wg?t=3
The grove master!  Even Kenny plays better in Berlin . I kid you not , a lot of musicians think Berlin has perfect air for
playing .

https://youtu.be/p6hV4XaoMUU?t=2
Some thing to think about . I do not believe any country in the world can make average school -kid musicians this good .Or anywhere close to them !
https://youtu.be/IcsgOIAcypQ?list=RDIcsgOIAcypQ&t=1     These are two bands in a row, might get  add in between .These are ELEMENTARY  children !
Looking at the guys they thought Shaw was too .
Above clip made me feel Garret did nothing but play 24/7/ 363. Day off on Christmas and Easter .
She said he was inspired by Wagner’s bombs and thought
he could sell a deeper tone wind instrument than existed in this new day of music anywhere . Did sell quite a few ,. R.Strauss wrote for it among others . Wagner heard of Heckel and came to him with an order.

Should , that young lady is superb . In looks too, IMO .
There is a whole series of these clips by Stuttgart musicians of every instrument of this great symphony .
Man, this might be an instrument even our walking encyclopedic musician
isn’t familiar with.https://youtu.be/Gxj0OLftfFk?t=12
I'll wager he wouldn't mind sitting next to her ,only because she has such a great tone of course .
This little princess speaks German as well as it can be spoken ! Perfect diction .Older lady speaks good middle-class .
Stuttgart band is in good shape .
To me , this classic speaks, a few mm down , of the plight of the several
hundred thousand foreign students , from freshman to PhD, whose
visas were voided by DC this July 6 , immediately, because their college’s and
universities had with hard work and great expense set up on-line classes
that they might not be devoured by C/ 19 .
https://youtu.be/fOUrnUktTjU?t=3

To be honest I was certain you had , just pulling your chain .
If your German is a bit rusty , here is something you don’t know .She had never played it before ! I love the German language , honey in my ears , and I have never heard anyone speak it any better .
Mine is not what it once was and I understood every word .

rok, that "closer to me"  was most fun  I had all week .
True , or at least highly gifted .

But Frank can sell a song better than her , A lot better .

Caught this Mobley piece in car this AM , new to me .
+Van Gelder sound !

https://youtu.be/j8uDWsxeMH0?t=2

I dug this one up all by myself , really like it . Love the way Kelly plays , all star group to say the least . I can see Hank at  train station, may God Bless  and  keep him .
https://youtu.be/fVcrU6tvWGc?t=4
rok, your "Guantanamera" clip is one of the best I’ve seen and heard.
Must be a lot of " Bob Dylan’s "in Cuba !

I did not know the children could march .Teared me up that we really don't much care .Serious ?Why do we retain the shuffle that passes for what real soldiers do.?             https://youtu.be/ni0xPZ2ACYk?t=2
To my hears a jazz trio or quartet sounds better in mono .Which is why a old mono recording is often 4 times as much as its stereo
version among hard-core collectors .
acman , your Lateff stuff is outstanding .
Some mostly straight ahead stuff .
https://youtu.be/IHpng3K7BZA?t=7
Even compared playing  on a  .22 pistol with bad ammo instead of his
usual hand-loaded .44 magnum , Gonzalo is "da man " .
rok , my idea of real soldiery marching was those Black Watch troops.Never had much use for toy soldiers like those German "Wack(Alert)bataillons .

First time I came back from Berlin I was assigned to "Old Guard " 3rdInf. in DC .
Went to CO and asked to be sent elsewhere . He said , fine , if you don’t want to be here we don’t want you. In a month I was in 11th Air Assault
at Benning  . Perhaps only unit in Army you didn’t have to be in .
A Latin (Peru ) friend gave me a book of Marti's poetry  many years ago.

" A selfish man is a thief "

Jose  Marti

I don't think I ever read more truth in fewer words .

If you are not a trained jazz musician you can learn more in these 20 minutes than you can in 30 years by yourself .
