Jazz for aficionados
I'm going to review records in my collection, and you'll be able to decide if they're worthy of your collection. These records are what I consider "must haves" for any jazz aficionado, and would be found in their collections. I wont review any record that's not on CD, nor will I review any record if the CD is markedly inferior. Fortunately, I only found 1 case where the CD was markedly inferior to the record.
Our first album is "Moanin" by Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers. We have Lee Morgan , trumpet; Benney Golson, tenor sax; Bobby Timmons, piano; Jymie merrit, bass; Art Blakey, drums.
The title tune "Moanin" is by Bobby Timmons, it conveys the emotion of the title like no other tune I've ever heard, even better than any words could ever convey. This music pictures a person whose down to his last nickel, and all he can do is "moan".
"Along Came Betty" is a tune by Benny Golson, it reminds me of a Betty I once knew. She was gorgeous with a jazzy personality, and she moved smooth and easy, just like this tune. Somebody find me a time machine! Maybe you knew a Betty.
While the rest of the music is just fine, those are my favorite tunes. Why don't you share your, "must have" jazz albums with us.
Enjoy the music.

O-10: Horace Silver -- JAZZ HAS A SENSE OF HUMOR Got this one at the same time as the Nelson CD. One of his last. Entirely different sidemen, but you know it's Silver. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HEIom6UZI6s Cheers |
*****when an under endowed gentleman went to a house of ill repute in "Nawlins", he was asked "Who you gonna please with that little thang?", and he responded with great gusto "Me!"***** You just can't tell anyone, ANYTHING in confidence any more!!!! At least you didn't use my name. I can be thankful for that! Cheers |
I listen to Tyner, I hear Coltrane, even when Coltrane is not there. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=64lWx44RjdU My only CD by Criss. I will correct that. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Kuo4M4zElI Cheers |
I remember where I was the first time I heard this. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jv0fnSBf0Do cheers |
Jimmy Smith -- COOL BLUES So long, it could have been titled "a weekend in tunisia" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KFWV1O76MkQ Clark Terry -- YES, THE BLUES Another great from the OP's neck of the woods. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uDeukctvjqk so slow, it makes you wanna scream. :) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eK6bkcIne10 Cheers |
I wanted to submit Hart's "For Cannonball and Woody". Which I played tonight. Found this and could not turn away. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sBSTUvLg6Y8 BTW, 'For Cannonball and Woody' is great also. He studied Classical Saxophone for Four Years. Seems to have survived it unscathed. Great Player. Cheers |
Pictures: Lackluster is the word I would have used had this been an European or American Orchestra. In this case I think they played up to their ability. They are just not ready for prime time. I would have thought not ready for The BBC Proms, but I think their mission is to encourage and give exposure to classical groups like this. Even their body language was strange. I have several Pictures. The Great Gate of Kiev was one of the first Classical pieces I grew to love. I have Cleveland/Szell, Chicago/Solti and Chicago/Reiner. Because of these, I knew the Proms thingy was wrong. I also Have Pictures played on piano by Evgeny Kissin. Didn't think I would like it, but I love it. Cheers |
Have had this CD for years. Like it better when I can see them. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bK0X9J_pX8w |
****"Now, close your eyes and imagine that she is a horn player?". Personally, I don't think it would hold up.***** I agree. Ella and Armstrong are the only ones I can recall off hand, that could play voice, and outplay the horn blowers while doing it. They scatted notes. Maybe scat could help the guys who always complain about not being able to play what's in their heads? Cheers |
Those reactionary chauvinists in Vienna and Berlin had better look over their shoulders. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xXDT4GtKK88 Cheers |
*****Like a strange new cuisine; strange flavors and too hot, but after a few bites you understand and appreciate it:***** I have been trying since the 60's. I bought a lot of his music thinking I would grow into it. It does not sound near as strange as it used to sound. A guy once told me it was great music to play while reading 'Naked Lunch'. :) I'll get there. To my ear, His 'At the Five Spot' is more assessible. Cheers |
The Coltrane clip was just fine, but my sensibilities lean more towards this. All you horn players can put them right back in their cases!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ePqKd4yF5A Cheers |
O-10: This started it all, but I don't think a youtube was ever submitted. Allow me to correct that oversight. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ynZDm50EgBY Cheers |
Today's Listen: I have a lot of Peterson, but I am missing his stuff with the Trumpet players, save Clark Terry. Look hard enough and you will always find something to buy! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kJj7rii0YRA Cheers |
This one should have you laughing out loud for real! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NO2Q_YuC3PM Cheers |
In case you didn't believe your ears, maybe you will believe your eyes. Clarke just has to be the most laid back bassist in Jazz. Reminds me of the Ferrell clip. I wonder if McCoy is not thinking, "Damn, and I thought Trane was weird!!" But he is amazing! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tiI2ZHmxPPo Cheers |
The OP's favorite singer, singing his favorite song. The whole thing was wasted on that crowd. That audience was in dire need of a few 'aficionados'. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=agp2on83hrA It must be hard to perform when so many seem disinterested. Cheers |
Nigel Kennedy, Another customer of the exclusive tailor, utilized by our OP, Spike Jones, Roland Kirk and Wayne Shorter. Great Music!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E4RAyVLEEtw Cheers |
Today's Listen: Benny Carter & Orch -- FURTHER DEFINITIONS On Saxophone, we have Benny Carter, Coleman Hawkins, Charles Rouse and the ever present Phil Woods. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xSsOPdJBRPo I don't recall Phil woods being on my CDs when I purchased them. Now he's on them all! Really a great CD. Cheers |
The Alpha and Omega of Cuban Jazz. The 'new' stuff can't hold a candle to this. One Frenchman's opinion. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IujAxx7rjEE Cheers |
