Jazz for aficionados
I'm going to review records in my collection, and you'll be able to decide if they're worthy of your collection. These records are what I consider "must haves" for any jazz aficionado, and would be found in their collections. I wont review any record that's not on CD, nor will I review any record if the CD is markedly inferior. Fortunately, I only found 1 case where the CD was markedly inferior to the record.
Our first album is "Moanin" by Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers. We have Lee Morgan , trumpet; Benney Golson, tenor sax; Bobby Timmons, piano; Jymie merrit, bass; Art Blakey, drums.
The title tune "Moanin" is by Bobby Timmons, it conveys the emotion of the title like no other tune I've ever heard, even better than any words could ever convey. This music pictures a person whose down to his last nickel, and all he can do is "moan".
"Along Came Betty" is a tune by Benny Golson, it reminds me of a Betty I once knew. She was gorgeous with a jazzy personality, and she moved smooth and easy, just like this tune. Somebody find me a time machine! Maybe you knew a Betty.
While the rest of the music is just fine, those are my favorite tunes. Why don't you share your, "must have" jazz albums with us.
Enjoy the music.

I would. and did , buy several Grace Kelly recordings and would if I never listened to them . The jazz heavy artillery needs ammunition , and lots of it . https://youtu.be/lr2LaO9ezI4 On my order Capt . Kelly has bought all her guns to bear on Brooklyn ! |
Thanks for all the goodies ! 81563 https://youtu.be/3rVfOcB1v9c As this clip shows beyond ALL doubt Phil and Gracey loved each other and his admiration of her playing is made crystal clear . To this day it is hard for Grace to say his name . And hard for me to watch this clip. |
Indeed 81563 . Best homage of that kind of thing I’ve seen .Totally unique. As someone who is Phil’s age when he passed , the looks I see are the pure love of a grandfather / granddaughter when the former aches to leave her with all he knows and she is wise enough and loves enough to know that and receive it . God Bless them both . |
They play well together and play beautiful , what more can you want ? As you well know, all the ex-Yugoslav lands have had about every turmoil and grief there is after Tito . Countries in Europe where jazz is really big, like Germany and France, have a history of jazz going back to the 1920's when there was no rock and roll etc . Hercules would have a hard time establishing jazz even there today . USA can keep a jazz culture of sorts because 3% of 300 million is still a lot of people . That said you never know what could happen in Croatia, a bunch of kids could make jazz popular with their smart phones ! I don't doubt you were the hottest woman there , great to see you are back . |
I didn’t know Stan Getz so I don’t know what he thought. What I think is Astrud is a 1/2 half step above Diane Krall .How many process the gift ? Leaving out the EVERY octave I’d say about 10 million . Leaving it in about 2 million , there are languages that produce 1 in 10. A recording off "All the Things you Are" of Krall was on jazz station in Mpls . last week . LITERALLY she sang not a note , soft wispered the entire thing , not a easy piece to begin with . Very sad . |
To be honest , when this came out I was in Japan with 173rd Airborne Brigade and never heard it till years latter probably on car radio, was nothing to me then or now.My computer has an excellent sound rig and I just listened to her on the original LP . My comments were on the post on here with her band ,That said she was no singer in "62 either . No need to be respectful , Getz wasn’t . charzo, No one who was pissed with someone would end in "Very sad " , at least in English, which you seem to hate . |
One reason is that few understand or even know of one of THE most accurate phrase in scripture, "the sins of the fathers are visited upon the sons" . Who knows how he was raised etc. Satan could play as well as any musician who ever lived . https://youtu.be/rtpBJRBfXfk No minor detail that he had an affair ! The women is not a singer, period. As others have said, the singers "in the something to say category are the best". , a lot of ground but you know it when you hear it . The greatest American lady singer I know of in that category is a lady who had everything to say about the most important thing . Reminds me of Tony B. , not a phony bone in her body ! https://youtu.be/ZJg5Op5W7yw https:// |
If you think a sexual predator must be respected you need to take 101-102 Ethics at some where near you , quick.By your logic since Iron Maiden sold far more records than any jazzman you can’t argue they were not better. You post has the mentality of a 12 year old on her way to a Justin Beiber . Can’t argue with that . |
Perhaps the most coherent band alive , big band as an instrument !Some fabulous musicians !! https://youtu.be/piwm_4ZM2Ck?t=4 I don’t know who did the chart but whoever should get a medal or two . A master class on what charts can do in the right hands . And bands . I’ll take this piano man ! And save some for the drummer as well................. https://youtu.be/uv21JLPCbCU?t=4 |
https://youtu.be/c-XG1UqM2fg Tunes from one of the worlds greatest cities .3 days ago by young talent . |
https://youtu.be/jpnjXI9jVnI?t=4 Thanks ac.I don’t know their names but there are some fantastic arrangers in Deutschland ! Audio engineering and filming on this clip is outstanding . as in superb! (ausgezeichnet) in German . |
rokm That Full Monty has me laughing ! Frog and mary jo . I really need opinions on things I’ve been thinking about some time .Corrections welcomed . 1.When a stone -cold Masterpiece is a duo or trio if a piano is involved it should be the instrument it was written for .Here, pianoforte . Should be all original everything if possible. Not for the sound as such but for what the genius was saying . My hears and gut feeling think this it ! 2. Very good female musicians , in trios or quartets, where there is another seem to get a balance between each other seemingly automatic . Need more Ladies . Starting with Berlin . https://youtu.be/vTz4fybXBR4?t=5 |
Amem ,my brother from another mother. I think I’ve read about al there is about Brahms in English . X years ago when I was bi- lingual German / English I read the Muhlfeld Brahms arising in his own words . My hand was shaking . I believe that for sheer intellect Brahms has no better . From a take’s one to know one outlook , I am am positive that he simply had severe PTSD from his father sending him into cafes, aka whore houses, in the worlds largest port with a thousand of same , at barely 13 . Clara Schumann would second it . P.S . IMO bi-lingual is when you dream in both languages and the story remains the same . P.PS .Exactly in the middle of the wall between my speakers hangs a LOVELY Nonsense cover of Brahms Viola Sonatas with Michael Tree viola and the Great Richard Goode piano . I would not sell it for a thousand bucks . |
frogman, Not Primary , I just meant that Schubert wrote for that instrument in that piece and that is what is best played for that piece .Which is not to say everything he wrote should be . I write sloppy these days. Example , I have a Beaux Arts Trio of Op 100 and I hear the beauty of that great ensemble .When these 3 play I hear the voice of Schubert .May be just me, but there are books in German where his friends wrote the way he spoke, which was quite unusual . |
O-10 , I was never that romantic , I liked Johnny Mathis because he had a lovely voice and was master of his craft . I was always a one-woman man and got the one I wanted. That said , a lady friend of mind once said how ironic it was that a gay man was the greatest instrument of pregnancy in the world .Could be . |
The truly skilled make the music flow , almost like the horn was playing itself . https://youtu.be/cYaH7GpoOiM?t=3 |
Thanks, If I did that I’d have 3rd Armor, 8th ID ,4th ID(RVN) , 5th ID , 11th AA , 1st Cav(RVN) and the ones I liked the best, 173rd AB and Berlin Brigade . Best unit I ever was in was C/3/ 6th Inf BB . Berlin had best discipline in Army . Squad leaders like that . Company Level Officers too, even "water walkers" did not need to worry about it showing upon ER as it didn't show up on special rules for Berlin . At least in early 60's when I was there . |
One of the guys who died too young and whose music I like the best . Notice, there are some very good musicians in the band playing from the charts and this soloist is not ! https://youtu.be/WsdpXV_cS-U?t=2 |
We were sharp but we trained just as hard as 173'rd . We were there as a trip wire that ensured NATO we were serious. 6,000 dead Americans couldn’t be ignored . We, at least Senior NCO’s and Officers knew that . Our barracks , old German ones but in good shape were 1.4 km from 500 Russian Arty 155 pieces . As you know , the Russians are the masters of Artillery . Talked to some former eastern front soldiers about that , their greatest fear. Their joke was the Russians fire control asked which pocket the infantry wanted . Cheers |
Anything you can do with sticks he can do . Loud ,soft and in between . https://youtu.be/2b4hnwMTeU8?t=6 |
It is a crime how little Hefti and other great arrangers are so generally unknown ! It amazes me how all these old American masters end up playing in Cologne with WDR .frogman , I’ll wager you’d be amazed what that fine WDR Saxophone lady, Karolina Strassmayer, can do with her miserystick , only fleeting glances of her changing instruments seem to be on the tube . |
What gets me with Wess in that clip is he still seems to not have lost his nuance factor which is remarkable at his age ,don’t have to cut any slack for him! If WDR ever calls for you (very likely) don’t forget to see the Cologne Cathedral(Dom) , near their studio and likely the most beautiful church in the world . |
0-10 and rok2id , both well said . But without the well-spring of live music it all means nothing .You have to drink from the well to placate your thirst . One of the many dangers of old age is your lack of thirst , I have to remember to drink . If anybody wonders why so many good to great jazz musicians stay with bands like WDR , I’ll tell you why . These people are civil servants of the German State , they have full medical and dental coverage , 6 weeks a year paid vacation and at 62 can retire with a good pension if they so desire . In short , they are under little stress . I know some good players here who are badly stressed out to make medical and dental for their family . I consider that criminal . |
This is a modern composer who can dance on the Jazz side or the Classical side at the same time with beauty and grace for both . https://youtu.be/QXNbLi88Iw8?t=2 rok, Phil means "lover of" in Greek and was often given that name when rich folks were the major money men back in the day . Symphony just means a band with all the instruments needed to play one . Today terms are used because big cities often have more than one major ensemble . Symphony 2 doesn't sound all that well . |
