Jazz for aficionados

Jazz for aficionados

I'm going to review records in my collection, and you'll be able to decide if they're worthy of your collection. These records are what I consider "must haves" for any jazz aficionado, and would be found in their collections. I wont review any record that's not on CD, nor will I review any record if the CD is markedly inferior. Fortunately, I only found 1 case where the CD was markedly inferior to the record.

Our first album is "Moanin" by Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers. We have Lee Morgan , trumpet; Benney Golson, tenor sax; Bobby Timmons, piano; Jymie merrit, bass; Art Blakey, drums.

The title tune "Moanin" is by Bobby Timmons, it conveys the emotion of the title like no other tune I've ever heard, even better than any words could ever convey. This music pictures a person whose down to his last nickel, and all he can do is "moan".

"Along Came Betty" is a tune by Benny Golson, it reminds me of a Betty I once knew. She was gorgeous with a jazzy personality, and she moved smooth and easy, just like this tune. Somebody find me a time machine! Maybe you knew a Betty.

While the rest of the music is just fine, those are my favorite tunes. Why don't you share your, "must have" jazz albums with us.

Enjoy the music.

I cleansed with a little Duke.

Jazz doesn't have really positive anthems, or does it.
Rok, You like to climb a tree, go out on a limb, and saw it halfway in two, with controversial statements. People will challenge your statements, and that's the way you like it.

I make statements that are so overthought they are boring, but makes it easy to agree with.

Takes all kinds.😉
My only point, was that bassist and drummers were good leaders.

Roach always had a great band up until he died. He was not known to me as a sideman.

Blakey by your own words was a leader.

Mingus was a virtuoso bassist, who LED some of the greatest bands ever.

Haden led some great bands and put out a great body of work. You do yourself a great disservice to just ignore him, but as usual, that is your choice.

Nice Frogman!

Was listening early this morning and listened to this. Great Sunday morning music.

Every time  I play organ music my wife yells out " All Skate" and starts skating around the room.

Frogman, Is it me, or did Jaco decide not to lay back in support of Brecker, but to solo over Brecker's solo?

If you could explain why Max Roach's use of poly rhythms helped the soloist, from a soloist point of view, it may help explain why Roach was so important to Jazz, although he was important in other ways too.

I once saw Roach take 4 or 5 kids and teach them to play a simple pattern, each different, then he sat down and played the first pattern , and added the other patterns one by one until he was playing them all, those young drummers, and I learned a lot that day.
Very good new recording with some names you may recognize.

Last years record was on most peoples top 10 list, and quite a few had it number one of 2016. Not very commercial, but truly a great band! I wish I could see it.

Yes Rok,that is an outrage. If I wasn't so lazy I would set up an account. Why don't you?
I turned you in for discriminating against people on the Atlantic Ocean side; And what about the people with only a lake or pond?
Rok, Yes Park Cities is a very affluent area of Dallas, beautiful area.

Although being born and raised in Dallas, I live north of Dallas in the mean streets of  Mckinney, Texas.

Yell, next time your up this way, and we will see about dinner.
