Jazz for aficionados

Jazz for aficionados

I'm going to review records in my collection, and you'll be able to decide if they're worthy of your collection. These records are what I consider "must haves" for any jazz aficionado, and would be found in their collections. I wont review any record that's not on CD, nor will I review any record if the CD is markedly inferior. Fortunately, I only found 1 case where the CD was markedly inferior to the record.

Our first album is "Moanin" by Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers. We have Lee Morgan , trumpet; Benney Golson, tenor sax; Bobby Timmons, piano; Jymie merrit, bass; Art Blakey, drums.

The title tune "Moanin" is by Bobby Timmons, it conveys the emotion of the title like no other tune I've ever heard, even better than any words could ever convey. This music pictures a person whose down to his last nickel, and all he can do is "moan".

"Along Came Betty" is a tune by Benny Golson, it reminds me of a Betty I once knew. She was gorgeous with a jazzy personality, and she moved smooth and easy, just like this tune. Somebody find me a time machine! Maybe you knew a Betty.

While the rest of the music is just fine, those are my favorite tunes. Why don't you share your, "must have" jazz albums with us.

Enjoy the music.

Frogperson .
Would it be correct to state that Shorter is the most "soulful" of the trio? Not that the others are lacking in any way , shape or form  mind you !
acman , I think you made my point . Shorter was the only guy in his trio
that could actually put some heart in that dissonance.
Certainly not trying to " dis " you , its just easier to hear when you are about same age as Shorter .Seems to be hard for younger people , which is logical IMO .
i.e Gonzalo Rubalcabla , they hear him as a very talented player . I hear him as someone who uses that talent to praise
the divine, he himself says as much in interviews . Not in every thing he does , but it's always hanging around .

Well it is certainly possible that you hear soul better than I do .It sure  is a advanced style and no doubt it is, and should be , admired
by musicians .  I'm not a musician .
It's true wisdom comes with age . Also true it knocks on the door and
most  don't open it .  In my 80's a lot of people have asked me for advice .First thing , often last thing , I say to anyone about life is "pay attention " .Don't think you need that advice acman .

Eisenhower made the greatest speech ever made by an American President warning us.No one listened and now it is too late . .The entire 16 minute Farewell Speech is of course on You Tube ,anyone who had not heard it in its entirety
would do well to listen to its all .
He was the last real Conservative President and will be the last . In many ways he was the first one .
Oh well . I can still post my favorite piano version of A Foggy Day.
From beginning to end there is a a river of sheer intellect flowing !

He had a PhD in keyboard from Oxford .
Mary Jo .  I was going to use Pepper but , great as he was . my hears

told me he was not up to  Mr. Stitt .
AMEN to the Great Jimmy Heath !Look at the just plain joy on his face as whips those Germans in shape( not that they needed it) .Can only come from a life well-lived !
https://youtu.be/8nOhQAHNBQ8
.
P.S . look at the respect on the saxophone sections faces as the old man solos . And there ain’t no weak sisters in the German radio big bands ,
Same lady plays flute with John Clayton on" Goodbye Pork Pie Hat" .
She plays the clarinet as well .
https://youtu.be/bah7kzOeumA
https://youtu.be/WRe_eLjwJA0

Makes me very happy that Jimmy Heath agrees with me !

If I could only have one saxophone piece from one LP this one of Jimmy’s would be it .https://youtu.be/41eDU9CBK8Y
81563, I don’t really know what the best college BB is, but If I was 18 and looking for a jazz school my butt would be on its way to North Texas !

rok , what LvB String Sonatas do you have now?
There is a review of the Ten in "The Gramophone Newsletter" this month on net
with Faust / Melnikov they claim to be better than my old workhorses .
Gumiaux/ Haskil (mono) and Oistrakh/ Pires on Phillips in great sound .

Worse , there is a heavy article by Rattle and Elder on how Orchestra’s
might not make it through the present mess .
Also the boys in Brussels may ban all Americans with  estimate of  200 K deaths by end of year .
Beats me nsp, I 'll look around . When you see a musician like John Clayton
is impressed you know they are good .
I love those German Radio Bands , got addicted to them as a soldier in Berlin .Jazz is loved all over the world which why i try to remind folks of that .

Finns consider that paying attention to someone you do not know is both a waste of time and bad manners . Period !

The mighty one .

Had more chords than a Navy battleship.                                https://youtu.be/rpcyHiC9jgA
rok. I see that TX is getting hit badly .  I'm praying for all with an extra
word for the guys on Ft Hood . esp. the First Cav (well that was on my right arm) .
Well I love my mono Gumiaux / Haskil , I like mono for 2-5 players .
Fact , the Naxos Nishizaki/ Jando are very good , a given in that she is
Japanese and he Hungarian .Can buy for few bucks vs the hundred bucks for Gumiaux / Haskil .
If the Naxos was All I had , I could live with it and be happy .I have about a hundred Naxos , not a dog in the bunch .

Re the mess , there are no words that can tell how bad I feel knowing I will never put my feet on German soil again . Or see my German buddy from our days at the U of Munster .
An International Disaster for music and musicians is beyond all comprehension .

In case I die from grief before the 4th , I’m putting on a song from
one of the greatest artists my home and native land has ever produced .

Fool that I am . I always thought it would make somebody a fantastic national anthem .

Without this Lady the song would never been written ,God Bless you Kate !

nsp, Mingus is about the only guy I listen to much that plays with that much discord . Always got something to say .
He does have a high opinion of himself but punk is a bit much .You can hardly judge any kid at 11 or 12  .
Can’t argue with you frogman , I don’t put much thought into my captions .Basically I try to get a discussion going to help my limited knowledge of jazz . So thanks !
frogman , That Sheldon is a beauty !Saw him so many times , great as he played ! loved his unique and pleasant voice even more .
Depends on the odds .Dumb has nothing to do with Brave . Brave is being
scared and doing it anyway . Many 18 year olds are weak , slow and clumsy.
Soldiers are like everyone else , they have good days and bad days , brave today not so much tomorrow .

What a great Big Band outing acman 3 .!  A pure joy to see those olderAmerican artists backed by those German Radio Bands and what a fine arrangement  of Hart's tune . Still a wonderful drummer as well !
The guy who made this  passed in 2016 at 67 .As one the Greatest American Standards everybody and his brother
has done this piece , I would not even guess who did the best etc .
However the rhythm of this is really nice to my hears .https://youtu.be/xpYibfCLYWU

If Jazz ever does die , perish the thought , the last concert will be in Tokyo .
Great clip nsp , Karolina plays flute and clarinet as well and just about as
well as saxophone . I couldn’t find any WDR records myself .Daniels is elegance itself , magnificent player !

As to free , US was never in danger of being invaded and if you mean speech, all people in developed countries say what ever they please whenever they please . Most Europeans are far more  outspoken than most Americans .

The cost of all wars and Defence bills like this years 700 billion$$$ is a far greater danger to us than any "enemy " .
81563, one of the best posts ever .All praise to Wynton for doing it and you for bringing it to us !
Nothing but good can come of things like this both for the world and guys playing .

For frogperson , nothing to it .https://youtu.be/8AzV_Sz-oYw

Great info frogman ! So much help .
The only woodwind guy alive I can think of offhand in Daniels class ,which is really knowing what beauty is , is Heinz Holliger .
I’ve heard live great players like Martin Frost ,Richard Stolzman and SabineMeyer but I don’t think even they have opened the curtain of sheer beauty that Daniels has .
The last thing he is is calculated , those saying so are projecting what they do .

My personal opinion is the more you play with others from other countries with other languages and cultures  the better you get .And vice-versa .
81563, well known fact that the most insightful people in the world are born between Utica and Syracuse .
An Onondaga Sachem told me the power line of the world runs under that 50 mile strip .

Japanese think in terms of the group . Only need to know that other Japanese will be there and they are happy Not a bad thing ,just makes them love Jazz even more than just for the music .
alex, thanks for all the Akiyoshi clips , had forgotten just how good she was.Ditto for  Doc Severinson .
nsp, here is a entire album of Togashi with one of the" modern" American
piano artists Paul Bley , the only jazz master I knew personally . Nice guy , may he RIP .
No video but I think you can tell who is whom .
https://youtu.be/ZatzCyZibMg?list=RDZatzCyZibMg

This is my favorite  Togashi , to my hears very Japanese . https://youtu.be/0sUUlOv0ZFI

Thank you so much for that little jewel shining in the summer sun acman3 !Made my day, no my week . Teared me up

.

Bley could play anything and though he was respected in jazz circles IMO he never
really"caught on" with public not because he was SO original, but because he was nothing but original .
He had a huge historical knowledge of all forms of music and drank heavily
from that well with a glass that was all his own .
Thanks Alex , I don’t think you could comp better than Bley did on this heart breaker .
nsp, you really are hardcore I have 6 .If I was younger would buy more .Japanese are a unique people with a lot to say .
To those who thought this guy was really just a hillbilly . Saw  him on a late night show once , the man asked him why so many
jazz players worked in country bands , our hero was easily 3 sheets to the wind and told him like it is .
"Because you have to be real good to play so bad all the time "  .https://youtu.be/lxDQQDF6j0Y

nsp , Clark also made what would be over 100 million $$$ today as host

of one of THE most popular TV shows in US " Hee Haw" from 69-97 .

Played as a hick but was far from that .

Thanks for the Kikuchi Trio stuff , as usual they have something to say !

Got to get that Sunrise so I can listen to the birds .

Its been Eddie Daniels Day for the last week in my house.

Hope I can find some recordings of him with this Argentine Master.

Can’t forget the Latin style with my beloved WDR ! https://youtu.be/lKVt6K4PFG4

That D’Rivera has such complete control at his age is little short of amazing !

WDR fits him like a glove .

Taking beauty into consideration .

German lead in said D’Rivera was the Acme of this major festival .

https://youtu.be/HBfetkCIbPU

I like the way he keeps the drummer down to a dull roar .

Doesn’t hurt to have a heavy artillery piano around though .

https://youtu.be/gTgW76wFb5g

The GREAT  Dianne Reeves had some fab backup that March day in the little city east of Munich and just north of Salzburg.

Don't get any better than this folks !

True in a country with more guns than people evil people will lay their hands on them.

What can be done and has been done in other countries is confiscate all semi-auto military clones with 30 round magazines etc.

With severe penalties for those who keep them in case Chinese Airborne troops land in their back yard and/ or a Democratic president sends a company of marines to burn their house down because they fought off the blacks that drove 300 miles from Chicago to assault their wife .

Two kids killed in a school is better than a dozen .

I understand and agree with you frogman .

That said , it might be better as the immortal Greek watchword " Everything in Moderation " Or anything but "Checks and Balances" .

Only time I ’ve heard "Checks and Balances " is in reference to the US political system where it does not work . And seldom has . Gives Jazz a bad name .

Much easier to not make a mess in the first place than to clean up an amorphous mess after its done .

P.S . I had my computer encrypted and have trouble with clips . Lucky you all .

If I could enter the trumpet beauty contest it would be Clifford Brown playing " Laura " .

How true mary jo, how very true ! We are losing the ability of being human !

This is my go to guy when going on is getting tough .A superb artist and a great patriot in the true meaning of that.
. Not a flag waver but a brilliant man who saw what was wrong and tried to make it right.
One of the greatest Americans ever born .

https://youtu.be/XBN0byLC0HA                             https://youtu.be/n8Kxq9uFDes

God bless you , mary jo . I personally saw chain gangs in the 50's as a young soldier in South Carolina , made my blood run cold , still does .

"Small" things show what the big things are in a country .

One was yesterday when a bigger, stronger and better funded team

and their fans made a circus out of crushing a team that had no chance .

Canadian team told them to their face this is despicable behavior .

Karma is another name for Hubris .

This is the Jazz album I listen to most . About wore my LP out .

I feel more God in it than any other I’ve heard ..

A true masterpiece from a master , hauntingly beautiful .

I hope O-10 is happy with his home town Blues winning the Stanley Cup

this night . God Bless him .
