Jazz for aficionados

Jazz for aficionados

I'm going to review records in my collection, and you'll be able to decide if they're worthy of your collection. These records are what I consider "must haves" for any jazz aficionado, and would be found in their collections. I wont review any record that's not on CD, nor will I review any record if the CD is markedly inferior. Fortunately, I only found 1 case where the CD was markedly inferior to the record.

Our first album is "Moanin" by Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers. We have Lee Morgan , trumpet; Benney Golson, tenor sax; Bobby Timmons, piano; Jymie merrit, bass; Art Blakey, drums.

The title tune "Moanin" is by Bobby Timmons, it conveys the emotion of the title like no other tune I've ever heard, even better than any words could ever convey. This music pictures a person whose down to his last nickel, and all he can do is "moan".

"Along Came Betty" is a tune by Benny Golson, it reminds me of a Betty I once knew. She was gorgeous with a jazzy personality, and she moved smooth and easy, just like this tune. Somebody find me a time machine! Maybe you knew a Betty.

While the rest of the music is just fine, those are my favorite tunes. Why don't you share your, "must have" jazz albums with us.

Enjoy the music.

aceman, I like Vignola as well. not much he can't do with a guitar !

Almost posted him few times , thought he would not go-over .
I’ve heard there is a healthy jazz scene in Nashville . If this "locked" in Granny is any example they are telling the truth !
https://youtu.be/HsJavr4AI5M

P.S Frogman, every time I hear Phelps I think of Ray Still , monsters of a feather I guess .
Second nature to hear whether a piece is locked in once you are tuned in for it .
Fantastic example of a string player who is tighter than two drums is Cynthia Phelps, Principal Viola of NYP . Some clips on You Tube ..
Not hard to hear why he is tops in bongo  land .My lame brain lies  to me when it says to play both melody and beat at same time requires 4 hands .
Since Beegie aka granny has another clip on You Tube titled " Tribute to Sinatra" I doubt if its a coincidence .
I love to hunt out these little known pro musicians , Krall must be worth
a 100 million and she could not carry Beegies music .I love her quick head bob to the "boys in the band’ as if to say good job guys .Also , the European jazz scene, right now it is smoking hot in Spain, Italy ,
Poland and points east .
Sinatra was arrogant end of story .I hear the arrogance behind the beauty and don’t like it , someone like Tony Bennett is pure beauty . I love that .

Why? that’s what these little boxes are for .Takes all of a few seconds to read it or somebody can just skip it if that’s too much  Not to mention that without a woman's view  things are less than one-sided .

Re: Sinatra , that is the prevalent view .

Berliners can deal with any tempo and any conductor .At their all -out it’s like being glued to you chair .They can and will pull back the reins on somebody they don't care for .
frog , re Still .I worked with a guy who was a student of Still .
According to him one of the first things Fritz did when he got to Chicago was to fire Ray . After first few rehearsals he knew Ray was the anchor of the band and would remain so .Kaiser Reiner would have none of this .Thank God the union went to court and Ray got his job back .
You know mine .
I saw a show , PBS I believe, where it showed everybody with him as they made his "Duo" recording .
IMO by far the best song was with Aretha . As it ended, he paused and then said to her softly "Was that good" ? She rolled some music up and smacked him over the head as she said something like "you know dam well it was " .In a loving way of course .
He was very kind to everyone on that in a manner that could not be faked .Was even nicer to those who had less talent as he did his best by them as well as he did with great stars .

A  True National Treasure  in every way .          And a hell of a painter !
nsp. It's not a matter of like or dislike . Anything you see/hear with Bennett
is a divine gift that is done one way, with respect and love of what he is doing and whoever he is doing it with , He is a transcendent human being,a gift to us all.I thank God that I was blessed to live at the same time he has .

mary jo.
As you know most women love a bad boy .

I hope somebody looked at the high school band at the Barcelona Jazz Festival I posted . Joel Frahm is a power-house saxophonist who was their soloist He said that high school band was the best ensemble he ever played with , he can’t watch the film anymore as the the two young vocalists
make him cry . If you do, watch his face in the background , its that of a loving father!
Can't see why anyone would be offended alex . Taste changes with age and experience in any event .

I wore out several Jacquet  albums to include that one . Walks that thin linebetween blues and jazz better than anyone I've heard .
I keep our Jazz station on all the time in my car . Just last week the DJ played some Lou  Rawls and I was surprised how good a voice he had .DJ  said  doesn't get much play because he is thought of as a r&b/ blues
artist   though he did some good jazz stuff .
Well that’s what women say , mary jo . A story is a gift not a sell.

Only thing I look for in everything, to include music, is love .

And the thing I am most grateful for is God has allowed me to know it when I see it .

frog , "Lost in the Stars " is, literally , beyond words . "All the "Things you Are "is the essence of Bennett, Its not his voice , when he opens his mouth love pours out of it in a wave that washes over those who will hear it .

God Bless you for posting it .

Don’t be , you are what you are and like what you like .And that’s OK .
Only point I try to make is music is a gift of love from the source of love .

The Jesse Davis post I made is about love .Pure love .This well respected 2 lip Alto man played next to a Spanish high school tenor and she was as good as he was . Big Jesse was OVERJOYED to the point of calling out to the audience "She did it , she did it" with a smile that light up the world .

It is ALL about love .

Thanks nsp .When your for real love and truth rushes in .

The more I hear Evans the more I hear a classical pianist playing jazz .
Not a bad thing . A lot of his advanced technique sounds like  Bartok to my hears .
We seem to be neglecting one of THE greatest jazz players alive who also has has a brilliant mind and a beautiful soul !

https://youtu.be/q70O-PqpxPo?t=2
Espetacular , Maestro !

At the Frost School .
https://youtu.be/S3i6qCIO6U4?t=5

P.S . hearing him now his groove is like that of a Canary !
The other guys are good musicians , but he is in a different class , a much different class . Unbelievable .
I’ll have to send you a Rolex for Christmas for that post frogman .Never heard Arrau do that , How he towers over everyone ,  the improvising  on himself is unreal .
IMO Arrau had the best possible personality for music, Latin passion tempered by German perfectionism . .

Faure is one of the least played truly greats , taught Revel and Nadia Boulanger all they knew. His influence on harmony is still paramount .
mary jo . IMO that is the best post ever on A’gon , by anyone about anything !.You made my MONTH as I read Evans himself state he was influenced
by Bartok . And Faure’s place in modern melody .
I’ve been trying to pay attention for 50 years and just knowing I can hear now and
then, what’s what , is very gratifying to an old man .
Thank you .
He can do anything frogman as you know . From what I read the classical base in Cuba was outstanding .And he and God did the rest .

Re; Frost School . I am 15 minutes away from the U of MN hall’/s for their 800 music students and would rather go to a student recital , Jazz , Classical or Choral than any jet players around .

U of MN has some fabulous Choral teachers and the kids are as well .Hope springs eternal .

Gonzalo, to my hears , is in his wheelhouse on this .(if he had one) .

https://youtu.be/I8NaCNXgPVo
Very kind of you nsp.
I don’t know about Grant Stewart , at least on this he and his group don’t seem to know what they want to do . IMO sloppy .
I think that’s 1st i ever played critic on a jazz player .
Joe Press still swinging at my age is quite a feat ! Boys hold him up well too.You know he was something in his day .

What I really like is an American double lip alto saxophone artist playing tight as Dick’s hat band with this Spanish band locked up with him .
https://youtu.be/9VVty9xmT-0

His other side .https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2LYINPAqZn0

You the man O-10  , nothing wrong with what really counts , you heart and mind !

God Bless you .
Dead Brilliant 0-10 !Obviously a talented singer but more importantly one with really something to say .

As the Greatest of the Romans , Cicero said , "He who does not know history remains forever a child. "
You are a grown man .

We all pass , but you will get a better welcome than most of us .
I hope no one else had heard a better display of talent than this , I might pass just hearing it .

My main man Jesse hanging in with the big dogs , Cyrus pounding on a Bosendorfer  , look out world !!
Vienne (France) Festival , 1996 with NO tricks ...................https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ab8t0Mn8EHw
Oh , frogman , in my hears Davis is a notably better player now , more control and coherence than he had as the "kid" on the clip 25 years ago .

pjw, That jiro hollow piece was fantastic , that Japanese way of always coming from a disciplined foundation no
matter where they go is seems to be in the blood . So many greats in a land 1/3 rd of ours . .https://youtu.be/n504TUSRX0g?list=RDn504TUSRX0g
I never knew there were so many  cubanos in Japan , most have been caught in Gulf Stream .
Not to mention Jesse wrote that tune . To my hears he was a tad more melodic than the others without changing the overall idea but that’s just me .
. From all I’ve been able to find he is noted for his good nature and politeness .
For a listener to got such good looks at various embouchure’s was very interesting indeed !Every player on that clip had something to say and said it very well . Like a template on how to play jazz.

Of course Woods and Chestnut were the big dogs but all gave so much it was like a beautiful family .
Well that is the most serious :Lullaby I ever heard  0-10 .
In my mind I thought of a day in the sugar cane fields with the engines
running back and forth and the peons enduring hell on earth .
Of the at least 10,0000  covers that have passed through my
hands this is the most beautiful .Decades later he looked at high school players the same way .,.https://youtu.be/448rUZ7BnjA
.
IMO Davis has the most soul . Just me .
Straight up, McPherson on tone , Jesse on melody and swing . A tie .

I saw Davis had a different mouthpiece but I thought it was the double lip thing NO players use . Never seen either in real life . Lousy sounding clip on Voyage for Davis , seems to be only one extant .Woods is great but to use a classical analogy , to me he's Heifetz, Davis is Menuhin. But that IS ONLY me .
I see ,yes he does sound more musical .But , I’ll stick to analogy I just put in my last post above .

P.S . there are a lot of free rides , just not in music . Except rock .

Davis seems to have had problems in his left hand for a long time , Menuhin came to mind .
Man that’s hard for me , I can never get past Ron Carter every time I hear him . Maybe couldn’t hold up the Empire but he could be the foundation
for the Chrysler Building for sure .Coleman is a nice clean player I never recall hearing .

frog , I erased that one after I thought you might think it was about YOUR
boat ride .
The one above now is specific for you and IMO is the best version of that
great standard .Minnesotans don’t affect . For all she is playing the piano as well .
P.S . If there was a 10 favorite Jazz great poll Toots would be on mine !
frogman , looking at my post I can see why you could think that .
What I meant to say is Carter is so Great I can only listen to him .If there were a top 5 poll on your favorite Jazzman , Carter would be on mine .
Only problem I have with Elling is he a singer of poetry or a poet who sings? Likely both ..IMO he is the most intelligent person singing, in the USA at least .
Seen him twice live at Dakota , if there had not been 13 inches of snow in my driveway 2 weeks ago it would have been 3 times . I want him and Karon Allison to sing together , which might happen .
I doubt if I could pick out Berg , but he is my idea of an ideal jazz artist .
Straight ahead , improvising but not seeing how loud he can play , saying what he has to say without making a contest out of it , serving the music and the guys he’s playing with . In short, no B.S .It must be very difficult to play so coherently so long on a wind instrument with nowhere to hide , Berg is a master of that .

Higgings I got , pure magician .
I had no idea who the soloist was , don’t know enough to pick up disciples .Knew it was a saxophone though and he made it talk .

Bet more than a few ladies wanted to sing it to Dexter back in the day .Almost as handsome as us .
Glad to hear you were not a Mariel kid , thank God .

Well fellows its silly to say without hearing them live ,but, both are masters and while I suspect McGriff is a better overall player , I don’t hear him swinging like Holmes .

Great album in any event , sidemen are outstanding .

Indeed frogman.
I thought a while as to whether or not I should use a clip with Lee , they blended so beautifully !
But I decided to concentrate on walking base  so all would get that , including me .
As we come to July 1 and 4th , the birthday of 2 lands I love , this year I am praying for the sailors of both nations who died in WW II .
An American Admiral wrote in "Naval Proceedings "the American Naval bible, a now famous article that showed how the Canadian ships that took the merchant ship convoys out of the Canadian ports  to the the Russian Port Of Murmansk
when  other Navies would  not , as the lost of ships and sailors escorting the
the huge amounts of American supplies , without which the Red Army
might not been able to do the heavy lifting that defeated the Germans  were heavy .Here is what they looked like . And the Hymn of the American , British
Canadian Navies .

https://youtu.be/2dlXmuYuAYc?t=2

And the seas were at least that bad for the last thousand miles .
P.S , The American Admiral stated, that man for man , those Canadian Sailors did more in WW II to win the war than any one else .

I like this one of Lee and Lennie together .https://youtu.be/Ih6eTurLxek

Sound isn't the greatest but players make up for it .
Frog ,rok whoever .
This is what the Berliners can do with and for a Maestro they love andknow is very sick,The joy on Abbado's face lights  the Opera Hall in Palermo .
Almost all their clips are less than 3 minutes now with their free
digital stream .
But even a little is a lot with the most fierce of all the 9th's .
