Jazz for aficionados

Jazz for aficionados

I'm going to review records in my collection, and you'll be able to decide if they're worthy of your collection. These records are what I consider "must haves" for any jazz aficionado, and would be found in their collections. I wont review any record that's not on CD, nor will I review any record if the CD is markedly inferior. Fortunately, I only found 1 case where the CD was markedly inferior to the record.

Our first album is "Moanin" by Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers. We have Lee Morgan , trumpet; Benney Golson, tenor sax; Bobby Timmons, piano; Jymie merrit, bass; Art Blakey, drums.

The title tune "Moanin" is by Bobby Timmons, it conveys the emotion of the title like no other tune I've ever heard, even better than any words could ever convey. This music pictures a person whose down to his last nickel, and all he can do is "moan".

"Along Came Betty" is a tune by Benny Golson, it reminds me of a Betty I once knew. She was gorgeous with a jazzy personality, and she moved smooth and easy, just like this tune. Somebody find me a time machine! Maybe you knew a Betty.

While the rest of the music is just fine, those are my favorite tunes. Why don't you share your, "must have" jazz albums with us.

Enjoy the music.

On one of my earlier post the main point was, say you don't like a musical period, lets say fusion, and you don't learn the language, because why should you; You HATE fusion.  Years later you may miss out on a great guitarist like John Abercrombie, because the language sounds foreign, because he is rooted in the time you skipped, and all subsequent variations are also.

First, the orignal music by Bass Desires.

Next, the same tune, obviously different because of Michael Brecker with Abercrombie.

If Kenny Burrell or early Jim Hall are your reference, you may not get Abercrombie.

The only reason I keep mentioning this is , it seems at least to me , at the core of our continual, circular, fights. And why some people hate everything since Glen Miller.

I know this sometimes limits me personally, when I listen and don't get what others are raving about. I remember playing Jack Dejohnette's "New Directions "  all night while I slept for about a week. I started to get what was going on slowly, but surely.

Now, because I was so Anti Rap/Hiphop, I don't get some of the new Jazz music which is rooted in the language and rhythms of that period and I can only blame myself !!!

Win some, lose some!

Hope this makes some sense to someone.

Alex, Focus was great rock band, but my brain divides them differently. Maybe the bluegrass side of the Dreg's????? Maybe I need to listen again????

It appears my hypothesis has already proven to be false, and I was ready to make it a theory, if not a law. :)

Thanks for the Oscar Peterson, a great record by a great group.

I am going to wuss out and say i can't decide between the two. Baker or Getz, Getz or Baker? Today must be Baker.

O-10, you did say that you were going on  vacation.  😁

Technically its  Rok's fault. He was left in charge,  during your absence

I heard this on my drive to work. I listened to several cuts from the record. Very Nice Work!

Thanks for the heads up on the Thad Jones -Mel Lewis Band ,Rok.
Another Female vocalist I have liked lately is Sari Kessler. Hopefully someone will play something from her new recording on youtube soon.
Driving... I  thought it was cool how the sax pattern drives everything else.
Appreciate the feedback. I knew Danny Green would not fly as easy as the others I played, but I think someone will enjoy it, and thought he deserved the exposure for his new recording. I enjoy what his Trio are doing and find my fingers snapping. I thought it was a little too retro and no startling virtuosity, but it grew on me.

 You can't win them all!

I may be the one confused, but I think Frogman's comments were made in regard to McCoy's recording "Sahara", which Elvin Jones did not play on.

Great record BTW.

If your point was that Elvin was somehow effected by Coltrane, Well EVERYONE was effected by Coltrane!

Thanks for the Paco everyone. I will have to dig my LP's out this morning to see what I have. Not enough!
As is almost always true, our comments about others, say much more about who we are.

Looked at some reviews today, just to make sure I wasn't the only one who liked the Danny Green Trio's record. Doesn't necessarily mean I am right, but at least not the only one, except Frogman.

Frogman sure has a lot of Minion's! I bet it is a conspiracy.

not as glowing , but not bad

I am glad they are no longer " Bland, dirivative, and ( almost) totally pointless music".
Frogman, I think I could sit through the movie in a theatre, but I did not make it through the whole thing on my computer. I enjoyed the music. It changed musically so often I thought of John Zorn"s "Spillane " recording. I wonder if that is where he got the idea of changing tune's so fast?

Sorry about the link,

Notice how Zorn changes themes often.

O, I just picked two randonm clips off the Filmworks series.

I am not a Zorn expert in any way, but love most every thing I hear. If someone, anyone out there, was a Zorn expert it would be fun.
Jafant, Gary Oldman and Chloe Webb, were in a movie called "Sid and Nancy", portraying Sid Vicious and Nancy Spurgon. They were excellent in these roles. Simple as that. I played a scene from the movie, and then the actual video the movie was referencing.

FYI, I also liked Rok's Raging Bull answer.
Michelzay, thanks for the heads up on the vinyl vs CD info. Helps one know which way to go.

Welcome to the thread!

O-10, not sure about everyone else, but busy at work and play.

I don't think it is Ahmad Jamal's fault. One strange fact; He is getting better as I get older.
