Jazz for aficionados

Jazz for aficionados

I'm going to review records in my collection, and you'll be able to decide if they're worthy of your collection. These records are what I consider "must haves" for any jazz aficionado, and would be found in their collections. I wont review any record that's not on CD, nor will I review any record if the CD is markedly inferior. Fortunately, I only found 1 case where the CD was markedly inferior to the record.

Our first album is "Moanin" by Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers. We have Lee Morgan , trumpet; Benney Golson, tenor sax; Bobby Timmons, piano; Jymie merrit, bass; Art Blakey, drums.

The title tune "Moanin" is by Bobby Timmons, it conveys the emotion of the title like no other tune I've ever heard, even better than any words could ever convey. This music pictures a person whose down to his last nickel, and all he can do is "moan".

"Along Came Betty" is a tune by Benny Golson, it reminds me of a Betty I once knew. She was gorgeous with a jazzy personality, and she moved smooth and easy, just like this tune. Somebody find me a time machine! Maybe you knew a Betty.

While the rest of the music is just fine, those are my favorite tunes. Why don't you share your, "must have" jazz albums with us.

Enjoy the music.

Still here, enjoying the posts.  Listening to a little Dexter Gordon at the moment.  I was out of the net for a while due to getting a new knee in May. :)

Cheers

I have all the usual Sonny Rollins must haves. I always think of him as being a different breed of sax player. Aloof / Loner. Something.  Too much improvisation?

My latest is his CD with the MJQ. Have not opened it yet.

Blue Note paying artists in Heroin????   My BS alarm is beginning to vibrate.

@curiousjim

I know, as does everyone else, about the Heroin problem at that time.  I just don't think one of the founders of Blue Note would pay artists in drugs.  That's a felony.  Why risk all he had built, by being in effect, a drug pusher.  You pay them in dollars and let them find a 'source'.

The whole thing sounds like a tale told by someone trying to explain why their career never went anywhere.

I can just see some record company exe throwing a few 'bags' in front of Miles or Mingus as 'payment'.

@curiousjim

I am currently searching for a new integrated.  For my purposes, the Yamaha's seem about right, but I can not decide how much power I need.  Hence the  video. 100wpc seems to be the new normal.

Mary Jo,

I am still hanging around and fighting the good fight.

Hope you are well.  I have a thread called 'The Good Stuff'.  Check it out.

For you:

@acman3

Great stuff.

I just received the remastered stereo and mono 2CD set of My Favorite Things yesterday.  Also Blue Train, The Complete Masters.  Can't have too much Trane.
