Jazz for aficionados

Jazz for aficionados

I'm going to review records in my collection, and you'll be able to decide if they're worthy of your collection. These records are what I consider "must haves" for any jazz aficionado, and would be found in their collections. I wont review any record that's not on CD, nor will I review any record if the CD is markedly inferior. Fortunately, I only found 1 case where the CD was markedly inferior to the record.

Our first album is "Moanin" by Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers. We have Lee Morgan , trumpet; Benney Golson, tenor sax; Bobby Timmons, piano; Jymie merrit, bass; Art Blakey, drums.

The title tune "Moanin" is by Bobby Timmons, it conveys the emotion of the title like no other tune I've ever heard, even better than any words could ever convey. This music pictures a person whose down to his last nickel, and all he can do is "moan".

"Along Came Betty" is a tune by Benny Golson, it reminds me of a Betty I once knew. She was gorgeous with a jazzy personality, and she moved smooth and easy, just like this tune. Somebody find me a time machine! Maybe you knew a Betty.

While the rest of the music is just fine, those are my favorite tunes. Why don't you share your, "must have" jazz albums with us.

Enjoy the music.

As the self appointed spokesman for that group that is the final arbiter of all things in the public domain, The Great Unwashed, let me say that time / staying power decides who is great and who ain't.  Listened to Bach yesterday.  The man has been dead for 272 years!!  If that ain't great, what is?

Modern day players may be considered great among those with the knowledge to know greatness, among their peers, with fans of a certain genre, but the Great Unwashed have the final word.

Besides, The Frogman covered this in his First Law.

Never mind.

One of the rare occasions when I answered the wrong question. As always, my answer was correct, I just have to wait until the correct question is asked.

I will punish myself by reading 6 reviews on directional fuses.

which was rooted in slavery.

I disagree. I have never ever heard a blues tune make even the slightest reference to Slavery. The Blues is about Women, Whisky, sex and hard times. Topics that are all universal in their appeal. Anyone can and do have the Blues at some point.

Classical and Jazz are both considered Serious Music.  Pop / Rock /Rap  / Metal etc... are all throwaway genres.

Folks hear, Black folks, The South, and they always think slavery. There is more to it than that. Next thing you know, using this silly commonplace logic, the music of Ellington, Monk, Mingus et al. actually came from Africa. That’s called the BIG LIE.

Classical Music and European history have a similar track.  When the Catholic church ruled Europe, everything was about God.  Or more to the point, their  interpretation of God.  The Classical composers followed the monetary support.

The combination of Martin Luther, and much later, 1LT Jimmy Europe, and the U.S. Army, NY National Guard, 369th Harlem Hellfighters Band, changed everything for good.   And for the good.

Was that a gauntlet I heard drop?   The man has been on the site 2 days and this is his second post!!  Surely you Aficionados will not stand for this outrageous assault.

The Jazz Queen Lives!!!  Along with Rok2id, the only other true Jazz aficionado on this thread,

Welcome back.  I hope you and Croatia are doing well.

Actually, it’s "The Frogman’s First Law"

His second law is "Rok2id is the most knowledgeable Jazz aficianado in the whole world." For some reason, it is not quoted as often as his first law. Could that be because the first law is in effect? Makes a body wonder.

Funny you should say that about KOB. This past weekend I listened to it from start to finish for the first time ever. The SACD.

@curiousjim

I love it.  No filler, every track awesome.  I also have it on LP from back in the day.

I bought it on CD and then got the SACD version.  I also bought a second red book version (not needed),  from Best Buy.  It just irritated me that this great music was being sold for 8 dollars, right next to 20 dollar noise makers, and it was the last one on the shelf.

Cheers

Glad you have come around to appreciate the greatness of KOB.

I always did, I just didn't want to get trampled by getting between you(KOB), and our illustrious OP(Somethin' Else).

Although certain albums can become too famous.  If the unwash loves it, surely an Aficionado should turn his nose up.  Sort of like audiophiles and CDs.

Ref  our beloved OP.

He left in November 2021.  Maybe he is waiting for his 1st  Anniversary.  He has not shown up in the Obits.  The longest pouting session ever?  We could post and agree that SOMETHIN" ELSE is the worst Jazz album ever!!!  See what happens.

Can the label for which a Jazz player records be considered as just another manifestation of The Frogman's First law?

In order words, there is a good reason it's not Blue Note, Impulse, Riverside  etc.etc.

Ira Sullivan:

Should have out sourced the Album Cover Art to Blue Note.

BTW, called the OP today and yesterday.  Answering machine both times.

Hey rok have you been calling O10 periodically since his absence here started or just this recent call?

The past few days have been the only times I have ever called him.  Including twice today.  The number came from google so I hope it's the correct number.  I assume an 80+ year old would be at home most of the time.

@the frogman,

What's the word on the New David Geffen Hall at Lincoln Center?

Have you heard it?  What's the verdict?

The site says the first performance is tomorrow, but they are showing the NYPO playing LvB's 9th on PBS here in central Texas today.

I have a CD  'Best of Randy Crawford' on the Warner Bros label.  Sanborn plays alto on that version, and it's a killer.  Eric Clapton on guitar.  Can't find it on youtube.  Maybe Dylan got Jealous.  The song belongs to Crawford now.

Didn't know he played with Wonder.

Thanks

Cheers

Is this it?

That be it.  Of course I have it on modern, not primitive media.

Great example of Blue Note Album Cover Art.  The music ain't too shabby either.

Rawls, Turrentine and McCann

Folks like Lou Rawls and Jon Hendricks seem to have a greater feel for Jazz than a lot of big time instrument players.
