Jazz for aficionados

Jazz for aficionados

I'm going to review records in my collection, and you'll be able to decide if they're worthy of your collection. These records are what I consider "must haves" for any jazz aficionado, and would be found in their collections. I wont review any record that's not on CD, nor will I review any record if the CD is markedly inferior. Fortunately, I only found 1 case where the CD was markedly inferior to the record.

Our first album is "Moanin" by Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers. We have Lee Morgan , trumpet; Benney Golson, tenor sax; Bobby Timmons, piano; Jymie merrit, bass; Art Blakey, drums.

The title tune "Moanin" is by Bobby Timmons, it conveys the emotion of the title like no other tune I've ever heard, even better than any words could ever convey. This music pictures a person whose down to his last nickel, and all he can do is "moan".

"Along Came Betty" is a tune by Benny Golson, it reminds me of a Betty I once knew. She was gorgeous with a jazzy personality, and she moved smooth and easy, just like this tune. Somebody find me a time machine! Maybe you knew a Betty.

While the rest of the music is just fine, those are my favorite tunes. Why don't you share your, "must have" jazz albums with us.

Enjoy the music.

Thanks so much nsp, haven’t received it yet but you can bet I almost broke
my mouse when I saw the word MONTREAL on the cover !To be honest I skipped the "Clifford " . might be too much for me .
nsp, the Amazon guy struck again and I got my first Haden-Rubalcaba
CD today . "Tokyo Adagio" .
He and Haden don’t play like one , they are one .
The love between them is palpable , perhaps intensified by Haden being so sick . Most of the music is slow tempo, not that it matters with Gonzalo as
he invented the continual variable transmission .
Nothing there but the music floating in the air with reference to nothing but itself . No place, no time, no person . Absolute perfection .If I was allowed one question to Rubalcaba it would be " Are you a student of Zen " ? Yes or no I would have my answer to all my other questions .

On a one to ten scale this CD is 117 aka trip to Infinity .
acman , could pass for a Jazz Requiem .Lovely .

"all things are reviewed from above "

Gonzalo Rubalcaba

Frogman ,  As great as he was I can never "get" his time ,.                  Was it different or am I just dreaming ?

Little short of astounding frogman ! Eastman acoustics are a help as well.

Here is something on the jazz side, this little sweetly really got to me .Guessing she hasn’t the best instrument . How does a 13 yr old play
stone cold bebop and maintain her tone on all those Parker triplets
without blinking a eye ?

If she was my grand daughter I’d be bursting buttons off suits hanging in my closet .
Sorry nsp, nobody’s perfect. I made a mistake once before .Got 5 Cd’s today of Rubalcaba , from beauty to beauty .
If only Brahms has written a concerto for the Congas so I could hear more of Robert Quintero’s melodic jewels !

Hamilton reminds me of me . We both got better looking with age .
Thanks chazro, I thought it funny he is listed as Robert on Gonzalo Rubalcaba Trio’s "Supernova "
In any event a great talent .

Happy the fellows got the Grammy, but I still think Brahms was a better composer .
No , I do like it and I much admire what he did in the race mess .
Just did not know what was what .
thanks !
I try to never give up when I get a bone , I tried for more than a year to figure out what Osmo Vanska had done to the Minnesota, got it (I think) he had /has laser control of rhythm at all times , first things first !
He is also taking our concertmaster with him to Korea . I guess it’s to be normal, he married her.
Censored ? the credit bureau knows more about you than the Gestapo
did about Germans .

rok, try ""The First War' by the worlds  most eminent military historian , John Keegan .

Thoughts on Jazz from the 4th most lively jazz scene in the USA with the 24/7 jazz station that has the largest market listening share of ANY American city.
Look out, Windy City !
That 3 million in clip is 4 million .And  at least a dozen young jazz  groups that could play anywhere in the world  have been added in 6 years .
I know it is so pryso. in spades at that .

But how anyone could  want to stop learning is  , emotionally, beyond me .My take from everyone I know or have known  is they  go ,or stay,  static   because the courage it takes to grow  older or just plain old is simply
not there or gets thrown away .
There are differences between cultures , for example Germans are very blunt and will
talk about death in a way that is taboo with Americans .
P.S .  The courage to go old  is as much as being a soldier , maybe more .

This is stone -cold proof of what Frogman said about finding your own grove from one of the most versatile jazz musicians alive !

This will make the  frogs  WEEK  !

Thanks nsp, the older folks have a nice melodic grove . Lovano always
goes to play with the best , first heard him with Monk., and Rubalcaba is surely that .
I'd love to talk to Rubalcaba,, not about music but about his religion .
So glad you liked them pj. Nice to get some feedback .
I got a big laugh out Andre Williams & company . Made my day .
I just had a deep feeling these two are in some manner kindred souls
I don’t drink but every Feb.23 I have a champagne in honor of the iconic voice of France. Last Sat.was the 50th anniversary of her death , there was no one like her and none that ever will be .
Gonzalo Rubalcaba could comp for Pavorotti , he’d have no trouble lifting the "Little Sparrow" to God .

frogman, pops plays just plain beautiful . see where Sonny got his elegance !
Think I’ll make a fool of myself again , in last 50 years I’ve heard a lot of pianists .
The only one I would place above Gonzalo Rubalcaba is another Latin, Claudio Arrau .They both bring a heavy dose of spirituality to their playing and in a similar manner .
And , for whatever reason , Arrau played better in person than on recordings and his recordings are often iconic .
P.S all " Autumn Leaves" was originally a French song  that Mercer worked over . "Les Feuilles  Mortes " . ( The Dead Leaves ) .

Frogman ,

Technique , tone, control , improv , brains and wisdom , she’s got it all .  I assumed she was German but she was born in 1971 in rural Austria . Her Graz  conservatory is one of the best in Europe . Quite  unusual to find a Austrian who can speak German German as well as her .

A true MUSICIAN !
frogman , I truly thought, is this computer generated ?As amazing a thing as I have ever seen !Those tiny three Angels on the trombones are beyond all credulity !

Dios los bendiga NIPPON !

I know there is because I heard him say so .https://youtu.be/l-JX6gtxMwMThis is my favorite Jazz recording of Previn and no. there never be one like him again .
And here is a heavenly melody with his beloved London Symphony Orchestra.Perhaps enough have gone before him to play him home .https://youtu.be/tsusR4RTcNU

Great post, acman3 , guys from that part of the world should should be heard more .
That we all know such is the case, it seems insulting to others intellect to mention the obvious .
I hear you pjw.
I often throw off  that line because nature seems to follow that route .Of course there are many exceptions .
frogman , what do you think about this flugel player? Primarily a Trumpeter . Not a member of the band .

Well , Sidney was a mentor of Mr. Armstrong .Also the only Musician I've heard whose tone reminds me of a M-60 machine gun .
When I see or hear Lady Day I see and hear only profound sadness .
The love she needed was tough love , 5 years in a NY state prison if that was all that could be done .
In the 1940’s the very word jazz meant one thing to the American public at large , DRUGS .
Just so mary jo, just so .
I thought of saying pain but no one can really know another persons pain .

Two of my favorite Jazzmen , Eddie Gomez and Jim Hall, with a different take on another favorite, "Waltz for Debby " .

alexatpos, Thanks for that "House of Blue Lights " ! Gonna try and round that up on vinyl.  Who's that bass player ? Sure laid down a beautiful beat .
I believe the first person that introduced McCoy Turner to me was the Principal Violinist of a prominent German Symphony Orchestra . He was also a major fan of Oscar Peterson as well .
Rock players who can’t play as well make millions and he’s sitting on the stairs ......................
La  vida es asin .
I never heard "Grove" Holmes before.. never heard a B3 swing like that
either .Soul on top of soul !
WOW , pjw !

Good thing I could not play that well AND look that handsome in my younger days, I 'd have 600 kids .
Love those congo's , I could listen to them all day !Are there recordings of just them ?
I agree Frogperson .
I feel lower than low . Can’’t go to Winnipeg for July 1 their 4th , can’t go to Spain (or any where else in EU) which was on my bucket list for this year , Too old to drive more than 300 miles a day and on an on and on.
As much as I do respect our Great Leader I still wear masks when out though.

This guy cheered me out on my car radio yesterday !

Ain’t nothing better than pure beauty ! Never heard him but sounds like a stick master to me .Almost like a soprano at times .
