From Listening to Stonehenge... to the Vinyl of Doo-Wop!?

There are two articles in the current issue of Smithsonian that I think many audiophiles might find worth a read. The first, "Listening to Stonehenge," describes a fascinating study that probes the "acoustical wonders" of the original monument:

The second article, "Don't call it Doo-Wop!," is a story about Val Shively and his renowned vinyl shop.

One of the more amusing anecdotes? Val's wife Patty organizing a "Wives Against Collecting" club, which might have roots from when Val gave the wrong answer to a question she asked him: If the house was burning down, which would you save first, me or the records." In the interview Shively reports: "I've learned the right answer to that question now. I just needed a little help."

I love Val.  I first bought from him in the early 1970s.  On one order, he sent me two free posters, one of the Cardinals, and I can’t remember the second group, but it was a contemporary of the Cardinals.  He also was a friend of mine on Facebook, until I closed that account and left FB.  On a scale of 1-100, Val broke the scale and zoomed well past 500.  One of the nicest guys ever.

That is most rewarding to hear; I regret never having had the opportunity to meet him (or to view his incredible collection).
