Classical Music for Aficionados

I would like to start a thread, similar to Orpheus’ jazz site, for lovers of classical music.
I will list some of my favorite recordings, CDs as well as LP’s. While good sound is not a prime requisite, it will be a consideration.
Classical music lovers please feel free to add to my lists.
Discussion of musical and recording issues will be welcome.

I’ll start with a list of CDs.  Records to follow in a later post.

Berlioz: Symphonie Fantastique.  Chesky  — Royal Phil. Orch.  Freccia, conductor.
Mahler:  Des Knaben Wunderhorn.  Vanguard Classics — Vienna Festival Orch. Prohaska, conductor.
Prokofiev:  Scythian Suite et. al.  DG  — Chicago Symphony  Abbado, conductor.
Brahms: Symphony #1.  Chesky — London Symph. Orch.  Horenstein, conductor.
Stravinsky: L’Histoire du Soldat. HDTT — Ars Nova.  Mandell, conductor.
Rachmaninoff: Symphonic Dances. Analogue Productions. — Dallas Symph Orch. Johanos, cond.
Respighi: Roman Festivals et. al. Chesky — Royal Phil. Orch. Freccia, conductor.

All of the above happen to be great sounding recordings, but, as I said, sonics is not a prerequisite.

Dervoed is a bit deep for me.

More important is him coming to the truth that Humans need Nature
to be what they are.
I live in a large city but there are trees , flowers, waters and large parks all around me,
I need just to walk out the door,
Last night  I saw 3 deer on my walk , I saw 4 wild turkey
hunting the worms coming out after this morning rain about out my window  an hour ago .

Praise Creation !

All the Baltic Lands have been noted for their Choirs since time immoral .

This one in the Lithuanian Capital is a favorite of mine and, God Willing,
I hope to be there and St Saviour’s in Riga, Latvia at Easter time .
This is the start of a Sun Rise Mass,

Speaking of the neglected , I don't think Martinu's music is allowed outside  Prague .
And he made some sweet tunes !

I always liked this little Sonatina from Martinu , misery stick and Bosendorf (I wish .}

P,S , I have all Dances of Galanta  and many others , I love Op7 but most seem not to .
After thinking what a man like Bernard should have as a good-bye should be the very best and something he played that seems apt .
Just a small drop in a small bucket from a nobody .But here it is.

Brahms: Ein deutches Requiem

Peace  Nobel  One .
Thanks, Jim .

Went into Scottish Sentient.
Just say what is in your mind and heart .

Brahms covers every aspect of life and death in his Requiem .

If God decided to give me a do-over to my wasted life and I could go to
any college , in ANY country .it would be be this one 25 miles south
of my house . And few have been to as many as I .

This tiny minute + clip seems like a ":pitch" it is, AND every word is true!

AMEN
Any lover of Bach must hear this lovely school .

His soft voice makes German music to the ear ,
I start nearly every day with a Cantata , does much to the soul of a sinner like me.
It never ceases me that so much wonderful music still comes from the poorest of major American cities , Cleveland .

Hear is a Cleveland clip of one of the most haunting  melody’s there is done as well as well can be .

About 40 years ago I was taking a class from the foremost Philosopher
at the Sorbornne in Paris .

She said something I never forgot ." No one who has watched TV could
ever do what Mozart did "

Still makes sense to me . Imagine the digital brain !

Here is sacred music that many a man has died with .
To include my great -great grandfather who died playing same in 1915.

Never did this before , but just made the best buy in my 50 years in audio.
Crutchfield is selling KEF 150’s at $350, these wear a great buy at normal
$550.
I bought them because for 20 years I always had KEF’s .Hardly need more speakers .
Bought these little pups on Friday , Crutchfield sent them UPS on OVERNIGHT , no cost !
Had them up noon here, Listening to some great Phil Woods right now and these
tiny pups are filling a 21/14 room with my Croft 45w amp .

A bit harsh on top but sweet on mids and clean at 60 bass .
And that’s with 30 minute break-in . One thing I don’t like is they seem to not use banana’s . They are well built and jazz seems to be their wheel-house .

Just thinking someone else could use them .(not mine )  .
frogman,

Very true about the Belgian piece , a LOT  to say in a world going to hell .

The county has a lot of fine classical groups not known in North America .

IMO Ghent is among the best cities to live in in all Europe .

Rarely does  one  actually hear what the singers are  singing .

Must get this jewel !

"The whole economic activity serves  the common good "

Bavarian Constitution , Art.151

Well , as I said , Jim . The Minnesota was always good but Vanska made it world -class .

VERY unusal for the Classical Bible to give 5 Stars to any US band not on a coast !!!

Vansa is going to Seoul next year , I would say it has about 50 times as much cash

as Twin Cities an to boot he is taking our 1st violnist with him , but considering he married her , not much we can do .

,

P. S . Reading the semi-story of you life you put on shows me, but one thing .

You are Scotland and You are Brave !

And a true son of Babby . Ah dinnae ken if  I  could  do what you have .

This music of coming death by Oliver Messiaen was made , and played ,

in a concentration camp in Germany where the Quartet, and every one else, thought they would be gone shortly , many were in starvation .

IMO one of the greatest chamber pieces of the last century both in life and death.

That’s a good one piano !

I don’t know rok , do know it was best Div USA put into field at one time .

Bragging another time is a road to defeat .

Ya , NYC . In Troy on top of a Bank is a small hall that has FANTASTIC sound

and World Class recordings are made there , Long time since I’ve been there

but guess a few jet-setters do play there.

Actually the Albany orchestra it self is worth listening to if not world class .

2 of the rich colleges about 1/2 way down the Hudson, Bard and Vassar, have

very good music concerts .

Rok + anybody

I have zero doubt that this is the best song the US  forces sing .

Fact is it is played all over the world just for it's musical merit.

Only one that could make me go over the trence in my 80"s

This is the best rentation I have heard , Band is German School Kids .

Even the Royal Swedish Air Foce agrees ,

Japanese Navy Bands as well .

In Tokyo no less .I went to Vietnam  on The USS Hancock , a carrier .

A thousand men standing on rails as you go under the Golden Gate

is a once in a life  event , Unless you are a sailor  of course ,

Had a lot more respect for Navy when I got off than when I got on.

Happy Veterans Day
