How far have ss amps really come in the last twenty years? I've spent 50 years or so as a professional musician in different bands, although in recent years I'm far more likely to gig playing solo acoustic (still play electric often), and to say "You stated you were in a band, so I believe your ears are s...
Bass management with stand alone preamps I scrape by with 2 subs, and think the array thing is cool but impractical for my current setup...I also am a Schiit Loki advocate, used rarely but it's there when I need it. Note that an array shouldn't exceed 14 subs as that is, well, excessive....
How do you know when tubes are done? A tube amp owner is often a tube geek to some degree, and "replacement" sets become laughable as one likely has a drawer full of the things. I could go another 10 years on my current stash. I recently broke a preamp tube (and had the power amp dri...
Opinions for transparent amp under 1500 Freya allows more options in case you want ’em at some point. I have one and think it sounds great although I use the tube stage mostly.
JBL 100 Classic or Klipsch Heresy III? Or you may like the horn speakers even more over time, as I have. An audio geek friend was visiting today and hadn't heard my system since I added a little SE Dennis Had tube amp and Heresy IIIs...he's the guy who turned me on to my (previous fave...
JBL 100 Classic or Klipsch Heresy III? 2 entirely different animals there...the Heresy IIIs are extreme efficiency (99db) horns with no low bass (I own a pair and use 2 REL subs with 'em as they go down to about 58hz before the bass drops off...the bass they do put out is very accurate...
The best State or region for Audiophile Maine...coast from Portland to Portsmouth...relatively inexpensive, great beaches (get a wetsuit), a foodie revolution, speed limit raised recently, buy stuff in NH with no tax, less people, great music scene, great arts scene, brew pubs galore, s...
Vincent Audio tube preamp SA-T7 & SP-332 power amp I own a Vincent/Kavent preamp that is astonishingly good, and was only replaced by a tubed preamp...still have the Kavent S-33 (Vincent SA-93 rebadged for some reason) though, and will likely keep it forever. Great preamp.
Solid core Versus Stranded Speaker cables I recently decided to replace my Rocket 33 bi-wire cables with single wire just to see the difference between single and bi-wire with my Klipsch Heresy IIIs...already owned an excellent pair of Type 8 single wire, and the 8s sound better so they'r...
Ahhh--Problem solved. Adding a REL sub-bass unit... Rolling the bass out of the mains is unnecessary as the mains were likely designed to run full range, and in my experience with a few differing speakers used with my 2 RELs, that's simply a better sounding way to go. My 8" and 10" RELs match extre...
Looking for speakers for my 4W SET amp My Heresy IIIs required a sub or two (which I already owned), but add those and the Heresy IIIs are astonishingly coherent great sounding things, and relatively inexpensive.
Prima Luna vs. Jolida I owned a "factory upgraded" Jolida 502P for years and it was great, worked flawlessly, and was an inexpensive, powerful amp...great tube rolling platform for around half the price of pretty much everything else out there, and the MD Jolida people...
Tube rolling Question I have a pile of 6SN7GTBs as my amp (uses one) and preamp (four) use 'em. From new Tung Sols (these seem to require some break-in but do eventually sound reasonably neutral) to NOS GEs, Sylvania "chrome domes," possibly re-badged Amperex tubes tha...
Can anyone hear the difference when you add REL subwoofers when playing two channel My RELs were found on Ebay a year or so apart for 200 bucks each in excellent condition working perfectly. Lucky score I admit, (and a few years ago)...still...worth looking around as they show up from time to time, especially the Q108MKII.
Considering switching to Tubes Joilda (or Black Ice now maybe) makes great stuff, and is far less expensive than pretty much anything comparable out there. Made in China, checked out, tested, and marketed in MD. |
