Jazz for aficionados

Jazz for aficionados

I'm going to review records in my collection, and you'll be able to decide if they're worthy of your collection. These records are what I consider "must haves" for any jazz aficionado, and would be found in their collections. I wont review any record that's not on CD, nor will I review any record if the CD is markedly inferior. Fortunately, I only found 1 case where the CD was markedly inferior to the record.

Our first album is "Moanin" by Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers. We have Lee Morgan , trumpet; Benney Golson, tenor sax; Bobby Timmons, piano; Jymie merrit, bass; Art Blakey, drums.

The title tune "Moanin" is by Bobby Timmons, it conveys the emotion of the title like no other tune I've ever heard, even better than any words could ever convey. This music pictures a person whose down to his last nickel, and all he can do is "moan".

"Along Came Betty" is a tune by Benny Golson, it reminds me of a Betty I once knew. She was gorgeous with a jazzy personality, and she moved smooth and easy, just like this tune. Somebody find me a time machine! Maybe you knew a Betty.

While the rest of the music is just fine, those are my favorite tunes. Why don't you share your, "must have" jazz albums with us.

Enjoy the music.

Many of the links I posted on film tracks are well known and I know you have some of them; I'm looking for tracks that are almost unknown, and I may not be able to find them.

Rok, that's an incredible compilation you have. I may have them separately on different records, but if not, I'll order that one.

Pjw, you posted some complex jazz that requires serious listening. I'm going to pipe it to my listening room and listen.
orpheus10 which of my posts are you referring to as complex jazz that requires serious listening?
orpheus10  yea those 2 albums are classics. Let me know what you think of them.
Anthonyyyyyy Joshuaaa, howls the Buffer, the ring announcer. Pjw, I bet I know where you were an hour ago.
Dangerous man that Ruiz guy, with a body shape of an armored combat vehicle. Short, massive, able to withstand the damage for a long time. I bet it’s hard to take down such a boxer. Imo, the mistake was done when he "decided" to wait for his chance in the match. Instead, should have tried to win over somewhere at the middle. Did not stand a chance on a long run against Joshua, the distant and highly cautious box dancer. Playing on points obviously ain’t his style.

Thank you for the cut. I like that particular repeated pattern of movement and when guitar is involved, than even more.

For you and in the spirit of today’s event:

Looking forward to the third match, for which I doubt it will happen.

Well , it's about Christmas and we should be listening  to some music of
that genre .This is my favorite both for its message and  its musical value .This is by a great Canadian artist who is world class in this genre and is
a very unique and stunningly beautiful rendition of this wonderful song .

One more of a Carol that applies to most of us .One of her last outings as he fiance died , back again at 62,.
https://youtu.be/CCYSITWpKIk?list=RDElO6auK1GYw&t=4
As folk music goes her genre is the most popular in the world and around
the world . There is a lot more "music " in it than most think . Her music is  world  music , but the Celtic is always there

This is the most powerful and unique version   of this major Carol I have ever heard .
Why mary_jo AJ won but he can never beat Deontay Wilder and you are a boxing fan. A lady I would love to meet....

pjw, privilege would be mine. As of boxing, hate to disappoint you but as a typical female, I fear for each candidate of being severely injured. That’s the part in which I do not quite enjoy. In what I enjoy is the way of fight - what tactic each of the boxers shows, are they able to adapt the challenge, did they estimate the opponent well, can they wake up and return to the match after they’ve been declared dead and other, similar stuff. Girlish, I know. Baj d vej, that last link of yours, the lyrics which capture brutally (it matches well with boxing) the picture of the relationship among couple, that’s almost blues, meaning that was good.
God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen:

Absolutely Beautiful.   Very heavy Middle Eastern vibe.   The Middle East is where the Lord was born lived and died.  So that's really the way it should sound.

But, we have been conditioned otherwise.   Carols are English/German/European.  And so are the titles of the songs.

'Merry Gentlemen' in the Middle East?  The OP would say that's Incredulous.

But the music grabs you and won't let you go.   Very Nice

Cheers

We Three Kings?
My take exactly rok. The woman is considered a Nation Treasure In Canada and is as creative as a it gets .
When I first heard it my thought was " Jesus would love this all his children music" .
Today's Listen:

Gene Harris Trio  --  THE GENE HARRIS TRIO PLUS ONE
the 'one' is Stanley Turrentine

From the Notes:
--Gene's debut recording for Concord.  This apparently is a 'reemergence' of Harris.  After The Three Sounds disbanded in 1973, Harris settled in Idaho.   He directed music at the Idanha Hotel.  Stanley did make a recording with the Three Sounds back in 1960.---

The 'I' word seems to apply here, but I will restrain myself.

o10, re: West Coast Jazz

About the time I developed a real appreciation for jazz (end of '50s, early '60s) there was an on-going debate about the merits of East vs West Coast Jazz.  Unlike the military discussions here I was neutral and found enjoyment in both. ;^)

As it happened, I had a discussion with a good friend this past week where he related visiting his brother long ago who lived in Hermosa Beach, CA at the time.  Whenever he visited they would hit the Lighthouse.  His favorite musician there was Bob Cooper.

Thanks, Schubert. Thanks for sharing and promoting the spirit of Christmas..... and the name. Not, this or that...CHRISTMAS!

You too, Rok. Re Cherry Tree Carol: Intrigued as to what you mean by “oops moment”. Btw, if anyone doesn’t know, that is a man singing; a counter tenor. That alone should keep it out if the “oops” pile.

pjw, loved the Carly Simon. I love singers like her. For them, it’s not about “the voice” and making a stylistic statement.  They just sing from the heart with a voice that is not “designed”. Here’s another like her:

https://youtu.be/qLuW8joOge4
The oops referred to Joseph refusing to get Mary Cherries, and then Jesus making the tree bend down to the ground in a show of Godly power. i.e. Brother Joseph had no idea who he was messing with, until then. Remember he said, "let the Father of your child get you cherries". He did.

Cheers

***** that is a man singing;*****

I wondered, but could not be sure.   Thanks.
This carol is by far the most played in it’s home , Ireland .
This performance by an Irish" bring the young ones unto me " choir is sung superbly ! Treble Solo is one of the  young lads .

mary_jo,

I understand where you are coming from. Boxing is a dangerous sport. There are very fast stoppages now compared to the "golden era" of boxing and less boxers are being killed from head blows. However there are still deaths in the ring occurring and I believe this to be when a boxer does not see the punch coming, and the punch lands in just the right place on the head usually the temple.

Many great boxers have killed an opponent in the ring. Sugar Ray Robinson, Ezzard Charles, and Emile Griffith to name a few.

All 3 boxers I mentioned above did this because the referees back in that era would not stop the fight when it was obvious that the opponent was no longer protecting himself, was halfway to la la land and taking repeated blows.

The Emile Griffith incident has a great movie called "Ring Of Fire" in which Emile, many years after killing Benny Paret in the ring, meets Paret’s son who was a baby when his father died and is now a grown man. The meeting of the two will make you cry. Emile spent his years in retirement here on Long Island. Of note is that Emile was a gay man back when you had to hide that stuff. I have seen many of his fights on You Tube and he was one of the greatest welter weights of all time. Hard to believe a gay man would enter such a violent sport and be so successful at it.

Here is the movie and it is a great documentary all the way through:

I have read the first one "Nine Ten and Out" and highly recommend. Never read the other one "Mans World"

Here is the video of Emile Griffith killing Benny Paret (It is a scary look into the final minute of Benny Paret’s life)

frogman,

I remember back in the 70's when Carly Simon and the Carpenters got a lot of radio play. I would hear them on my parents AM radio station in their car. Fond memories.

Its a shame what happened with Karen Carpenter.
Last post . My beloved grandmother will throw me out of heaven if I don’t
do something Scottish after something in Irish . I found some in Scottish Gaelic , her native tongue and to my ears , the most beautiful one in the world .

pjw, thanks to you, I did a research on the subject. Indeed, a huge tragedy, first for the Benny the Kid, his family and afterwards for Emilie himself.
Thank you for all the info.

Lessons learned from Griffith v Paret III continue in the sport to this very day but are a stark reminder of a situation escalating in a split-second and just how dangerous the sport can become between two warriors. ~ source WBN, World Boxing News

I’ve decided to wade into the political comments.
Great sketch. You should continue wading.
One I used to sing to my kids.
Please confirm us that this is you on this video, lol.
I found some in Scottish Gaelic , her native tongue and to my ears , the most beautiful one in the world .
Beautiful voice, thank you.
On recent great Gene Harris links.
I like when you post jazz instead talking about politics since you are obviously much more familiar with jazz. :p ;--)
On Christmas subject

- Jesus is watching you

Today I had a conversation with a 10 year old boy who could not stop telling jokes. I left amazed with his ability to interpret jokes so well and at his age. We were laughing I think 1 hour without stopping and here is one of the jokes, that I can remember. Thought some of you might like it:

Late one night, a burglar broke into a house he thought was empty. He tiptoed through the living room but suddenly he froze in his tracks when he heard a loud voice say: "Jesus is watching you!"

Silence returned to the house, so the burglar crept forward again. "Jesus is watching you," the voice boomed again.

The burglar stopped dead again. He was frightened. Frantically, he looked all around. In a dark corner, he spotted a bird cage and in the cage was a parrot.

He asked the parrot: "Was that you who said Jesus is watching me?"

"Yes", said the parrot.

The burglar breathed a sigh of relief, and asked the parrot: "What’s your name?"

"Clarence," said the bird.

"That’s a dumb name for a parrot," sneered the burglar. "What idiot named you Clarence?"

The parrot said, "The same idiot who named the Rottweiler Jesus.

Enjoy the day...
Speaking of wading in with current US politics, that Monty group has it down cold!

I'll make that my only non-jazz comment.

PS mary-jo, loved that one. ;^)
